SAMUT PRAKAN – The incident came to light from a video clip circulating on social media, showing the woman pouring hot water onto the back of a pregnant female Siberian Husky named “Muay Lek” while the dog was tethered to a leash in the bathroom, causing it to moan in severe pain. This case has caused great distress and anger among dog lovers and netizens, including famous celebrities who harshly criticized the action.
Social media reports indicate that the dog has since moved in with new owners, a married couple who own a restaurant in Nong Bua Lamphu Province, and has also befriended a bulldog.
This news was widely covered by prominent media outlets in Thailand due to the increasing attention from animal lovers and the expansion of the pet care market, particularly for dogs and cats, which is worth more than 1 billion USD. Additionally, raising protection and focusing on animal rights has become a growing concern.
In Thailand, the Animal Cruelty Prevention and Welfare Provision Act 2014 imposes penalties on individuals who unjustifiably mistreat animals. Offenders could face up to two years in prison, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or possibly both.
On the evening of June 6, 2024, Miss Natthaya, the previous owner of Muay Lek, went to the Bang Phli Police Station to address the allegations. She admitted guilt and expressed regret for her actions.
During an interview, she expressed her willingness to admit to all the charges brought against her, as she has been experiencing distress ever since the incident occurred, not only when the news spread widely. She said she also felt both sorrow and regret upon realizing the criticism on social media.
“I want to apologize for causing violent images. I understand that some people may not want to see such violence, and it can make them feel upset. I truly regret causing this, and I acknowledge the severity of my actions. I caused harm to the dog unintentionally, as I didn’t realize the water was so hot. I should not make excuses like this, because everyone knows that hot water can cause serious injuries,” she said.
She explained that the incident occurred due to personal stress and was not intended to spite her husband, as rumored. However, her actions have affected her husband, and she had to accept that they resulted from her actions that day. This makes her unable to take care of the dog today, even though she loves all dogs, not just her own.
Regarding the news that she may take legal action against the SOS Foundation, which notified the authorities about her behavior, she claimed it is untrue. She never considered it and stated that it will not happen. As for the negative comments on social media, she mentioned that she could accept criticism directed at her actions but requested that it not negatively impact those around her, as none of them endorsed her actions.
“There have been discussions about the possibility of allowing other pet lovers to take care of my other two dogs, ‘Rizzy’ and ‘Richter,’ in the future if the court determines that I am not capable of taking care of the dogs or if I am emotionally unstable. Currently, both canines are under the care of the veterinarian,” she added.
