Ex-Convict Arrested For Rape of Danish Tourist

CHONBURI – An ex-convict is under arrest for allegedly raping a 23-year-old Danish tourist in Chonburi province last week.

Police say the man, identified simply as Banleng, was arrested at around 8.30 pm on Friday night and charged with sexual assault.

The suspect denied the charge and said he would contest the allegation in court, police say.

However, Pol.Lt.Gen. Thanate Pinmuang-ngam, commander of 2nd Region Police, said forensic evidence and the victim's testimony confirm Banleng's guilt.

"Mr. Banleng can contest the charge under the legal procedure. Police will continue to find more evidence in the case," Pol.Lt.Gen. Thanate said.

According to police records, Banleng was found guilty of attempted murder in 2005 and sentenced to 6 years and 9 months in prison.

The alleged rape occurred in a potato farm in Banglamung district, only ays after two British backpackers were found murdered on the popular island of Koh Tao. One of the victims is believed to have been sexually assaulted before she was killed.

Pol.Lt.Gen. Thanate added that the police refused to accept a reward of 100,000 baht offered to the officers by family of the sexually assaulted Danish tourist for solving the case.

"We are just doing our duty," Pol.Lt.Gen. Thanate said.
