USA, Germany Top Most Arrivals Since Thailand Reopens

Airport officials inspect a traveler's documents at Suvarnabhumi Airport on Nov. 1, 2021.

BANGKOK — More than 13,000 people arrived in Thailand through international airports since the tourism reopening came into effect earlier this week, government officials said on Friday.

The data collected by airport officials detailed international arrivals from Monday to Thursday. The report said a total of 13,229 people have entered Thailand during those four days, with the highest arrivals coming from the United States (1,593) and Germany (1,592).

Other countries with top arrivals include the United Kingdom (1,006), Japan (935), Switzerland (624), Sweden (511), and South Korea (499).

About 70 percent of those flights landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The figures do not say how many of them were foreigners and Thais, nor do they distinguish tourists from expats or Thai nationals returning to their homes in Thailand.

Ministry of Public Health official Sumanee Watcharasin said only 10 out of those 13,229 visitors tested positive for the coronavirus, or less than 0.1 percent.

Under the “Test and Go” quarantine-exemption program, travelers must test for coronavirus upon their arrival and they are required to stay at a hotel while they await the result. If the test comes back negative, the visitors can travel freely in Thailand, if the result is positive, they’ll be sent to treatment at a hospital.

The waiting time for the PCR test varies. Some report test results as fast as 6 hours, while others had to wait for a day and a half.

There were also complaints about the shortage of drivers taking travelers from the airport to their hotels, where they take the PCR test, but the government has pledged to solve the problem.

BGRIM secures $28m financing for Cambodia solar farm from top financiers, confirming a vote of confidence in BGRIM’s strength and viability

BANGKOK, Nov 2021: B.Grimm Power Public Co Ltd (BGRIM), Thailand’s leading industrial power producer, has secured US$28.15 million (938 million baht) in a syndicated loan from three top Thai banks to finance its solar energy project in Cambodia.

Under the 15-year accord signed on 28 October, Kasikorn Bank (KBANK), Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM Thailand), and Bangkok Bank (BBL) have made available the fund to Ray Power Supply Co Ltd (RPS), a wholly-owned subsidiary of B.Grimm Solar Power 1 Co. RPS operates the 39-megawatt solar photovoltaic facility in Banteay Meanchey province that came on stream in December last year.

“The loan is a vote of confidence by top Thai financial institutions in BGRIM at the time when fund raisings in general are significantly hampered by the Covid-19 effects,” said Dr Harald Link, Chairman and President of BGRIM, adding, “The RPS’s ground-mounted solar power facility is considered a success for it being completed on schedule amidst many restrictions, including the Covid-19 pandemic effects and severe floods in the construction area throughout 2020.”

Its output has begun to supply to the Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC)’s grid on 15 December 2020 under a 20-year agreement. RPS is the first solar energy project in Cambodia which has secured firm power supply guarantee from the Cambodian government.

Tipakorn Saiphatana, Executive Vice President of Kasikorn Bank, said the lending to RPS is consistent with the bank’s policy promoting investment for sustainability and support customers’ transition to a net zero emissions economy.

“Kasikorn Bank believes that the project will play an important role in contributing to the development of highly efficient and reliable electricity services and utilities, which is an important foundation for Cambodia’s economic growth. With the potential of BGRIM, which has expertise in developing efficient power plant projects and innovative technologies, the company has cost advantages, global business partners and being recognised internationally,” he said

Dr Rak Vorrakitpokatorn, President of Export-Import Bank of Thailand (EXIM Thailand), said the RPS project fits well with the bank’s drive to support overseas investment of Thai outfits. This is in line with EXIM Thailand’s mission towards becoming the development bank of Thailand, connecting and driving trade and investment between Thailand and its trading partners.

“EXIM Thailand has constantly developed forms of financial support and cooperation with the public and private sectors to propel businesses that have a positive impact in the economic, social and environmental dimensions. This is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals that all countries must work together to create a better world and raising the quality of life of the population in the long term,” added Dr Rak.

Niraman Laisatit, Senior Executive Vice President in charge of Corporate Banking of Bangkok Bank, noted that the bank has already supported BGRIM in the development of various projects both at home and abroad for more than 26 years, starting with the Amata B. Grimm Power 1 scheme in 1995.

“Bangkok Bank is very pleased to have another opportunity to support BGRIM with the RPS solar farm scheme that is part of Cambodia’s development in infrastructure renewable energy,” she stated.

Dr Link pointed out that the RPS development is a response to changing energy demand patterns.

That has led various organisations especially those on international levels to come up with a policy towards reducing carbon dioxide generation in the long term and embracing renewable energy. Importantly, the RPS venture contributes to BGRIM’s target of expanding the share of clean energy in its megawatt portfolio and fulfilling the company’s mission statement of “Empowering the World Compassionately.”

Currently, B.Grimm Power has a total of 50 power plants in commercial operation. The company aims to ramp up its total installed capacity from 3,058 MW at the end of 2020 to at least 7,200 MW of secured PPA by 2025 and further to 10,000 MW by 2030 with an annual revenue of more than 100 billion baht being targeted. More importantly, B.Grimm Power is moving strenuously towards realising net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Digital marketing agency Primal, led by Forbes 30 under 30 Mark McDowell, joins global digital agency group with exclusive NFT project

Thailand’s fastest-growing digital agency didn’t get there by chance. Their rapid growth has been fuelled by their dedication to innovation and by constantly pushing the boundaries.

And they are at it again.

Headed up by Forbes 30 Under 30 Mark McDowell, Primal is a part of a larger network of agencies that are now being consolidated under one umbrella ‘superbrand’ – Superist.

With Primal leading the way, Superist is looking to make its mark on the global digital scene. As well as launching their new ‘superbrand’, Superist is also offering their own NFTs and plans to accept cryptocurrency for client payment in the upcoming months.

As part of its launch, Superist has released nine NFTs on OpenSea, each depicting a key leader in the global group. Each NFT also comes with one hour of each leader’s time, which can be redeemed straight away, or at a later date. The longer the owner of the NFT holds on to the time, the more valuable it becomes as the group achieves more success.

The group, which is currently comprised of Appscore (Australia), Chili (Brazil, Panama, Mexico), CODI Agency (Australia) First Page (Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore), Lisnic (Australia), Primal (Malaysia and Thailand), Removify (Australia) and USEO (Middle East) provides a multitude of services including digital marketing, content creation, reputation management, app and website development, celebrity speakers and online mentoring.

“This is an exciting time for the agency as we use our regional experience in a more collaborative manner to deliver integrated results across the region and achieve strong growth for brands as a unified global group with a plethora of offerings”, says Primal CEO, Mark McDowell.

Primal co-founder and Australian Rich-Lister Nick Bell is the driving force behind Superist. After recently launching the Australian arm of his agency First Page, Bell realised there was a gap in the market for a more dynamic and independent digital group that would make it easy for companies to achieve global digital success.

“As we aren’t a listed group, Superist is completely independent, meaning we don’t have to answer to shareholders so we can always put the needs of our clients first”, explains Bell. “We can push the boundaries with first to market initiatives that will help our clients stand out in the increasingly competitive digital landscape.”

Clients for the group include McDonald’s, Intel, Mercedes Benz, Uber, Colgate, L’Oreal, Bayer, Rolex, McLaren and the co-Founder of Netflix, Marc Randolph.

Thai Companies Accused of Fraud in Sales of Medical Gloves

Commissioner of Central Investigation Bureau Jirabhob Bhuridej holds a press conference in Bangkok, Thailand, Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021. Photo: Sakchai Lalit / AP

BANGKOK (AP) — Police in Thailand announced Wednesday the arrest of the head of a company suspected of cheating overseas buyers of millions of dollars they paid for undelivered medical rubber gloves during the coronavirus pandemic.

Thai authorities have been cracking down on a surge in rubber glove fraud, including the sale of substandard and used gloves.

Police Lt. Gen. Jirabhob Bhuridej said Florida-based company Rock Fintek filed a complaint that Thailand’s Sufficiency Economy City Co. failed to deliver 2 million boxes of nitrile gloves worth $15.5 million for which it had paid a 40% deposit.

He said two other companies, from France and Hong Kong, also filed complaints about Sufficiency Economy City Co., which marketed gloves branded SkyMed.

The Thai company’s CEO, Kampee Kampeerayannon, was arrested Tuesday on charges of fraud and posting false information online, he said. Kampee could not be contacted Wednesday and his company declined to comment.

In a separate case Tuesday, the Thai attorney-general’s office announced that a Thai employee of Paddy the Room Trading Co., Pipatpon Homjanya, was sentenced to four years in prison.

The company had exported millions of substandard and in some cases secondhand gloves to the United States which were packed without permission in boxes of a legitimate glove producer, Thai officials said.

Pipatpon was found guilty of producing and trading substandard medical gloves and medical equipment and of using the trademark of other companies without permission, Thai media reported.

The managing director of Paddy the Room, Luk-fei Yang Yang, identified by police and corporate records as Chinese, left Thailand before prosecutors were able to formally charge him in court.

The dealings of Paddy the Room attracted public attention in May when an American businessman who had filed a complaint about being cheated by the company was himself arrested.

Louis Ziskin and several associates were arrested for allegedly detaining a Taiwanese representative of another company, Collections Enterprise, to unsuccessfully pressure it to refund money after Paddy the Room’s gloves proved to be low grade. Collections Enterprise had handled the payment for the deal.

Ziskin, who denies involvement in the alleged detention, had paid $2.7 million for gloves to be delivered to his Los Angeles-based company, AirQueen. He filed a complaint with Thai police in March against Paddy the Room.

Ziskin and his associates left Thailand when police failed to provide evidence in time to apply to a court to hold them for further investigation, police commissioner Jirabhob said.

Pretty Please! Gov’t Urges Tourists to Drink Responsibly in Pandemic

Police raid a restaurant that allegedly sells alcohol without permission during the coronavirus pandemic in Loei province on Oct. 30, 2021.

BANGKOK — The Department of Health on Thursday said that restaurants allowed to serve alcohol in key tourist destinations must do so responsibly in order to avoid a new cluster of coronavirus infections.

The department said in a press release that restaurants must not serve booze after the allowed hours — that is, 9 pm — while customers should refrain from binge drinking, since the behaviour could lead to flouting safety regulations and COVID-19 measures.

Only restaurants accredited with the SHA system by the authorities in Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, and Phang Nga are currently allowed to serve alcohol to customers onsite until 9pm.

The Director-General of the Department of Health said officials have experienced overall compliance from restaurant owners in terms of health and booze regulations so far. However, officials believe that many restaurants and customers may become too lenient with the restrictions and social distancing rules.

In the press release, the department said intoxicated people do not only put themselves and others at risk from coronavirus infection, but they also have lowered cognitive abilities that may cause accidents.

Therefore, restaurants are encouraged to exercise caution in following the rules that provincial communicable diseases committees lay out, prevent overcrowding and lack of safe social distancing, and abide by all drinking curfews enacted.

  • Improving the availability of e-books and e-audiobooks in the library to meet the needs of first jobbers looking to upskill and thrive in the digital world.
  • Using technology to assist readers in finding books that are relevant to their interests.
  • Collaborating with local and international partners to create unique learning experiences enabled by a life-long learning ecosystem.
  • Empowering learners through upskilling to achieve their career and life goals.

“TK Park is a knowledge center for everyone,” says the center’s Director General, Kittiratana Pitipanich.

“We’ve seen an increase in demand from everyone since the new normal emerged in the midst of all of the lockdowns.” To meet demand, we’ve gone into overdrive to increase the availability and accessibility of e-books and e-audiobooks.”

“According to a recent survey conducted jointly by the National Statistics Office and TK Park revealed that Thais spend on average around 80 minutes a day reading in some form or another,” Mr. Kittiratana adds. “The vast majority of reading is done electronically through the use of online media. There are e-books, e-magazines, articles from online platforms and websites are all included. So, we can put aside the long-held belief that Thais only read eight lines per year.”

For months during the lockdowns, the knowledge center was closed to in-person visitors. Nonetheless, those same customers returned to the center for assistance in continuing their personal growth and development journeys. As a result, there has been an increase in lending of e-books, including not only novels but also a wide range of self-development, work, and investment titles.

Since March 2020, the number of people borrowing e-books, e-magazines, and audiobooks has nearly tripled at TK Park.

“People have become more immersed in reading as a way to unwind during these difficult times. They’ve also taken advantage of the opportunity to improve themselves and learn new skills in order to advance their careers.”

According to the survey, female e-readers vastly outnumber male readers. The vast majority are first jobbers and young people who have recently graduated from academic institutions and are beginning on their chosen careers. Employees and high school students were also well represented.

We have so many books that provide the knowledge and teach the skills most in demand in the 21st century for those who want to upskill and sharpen their competitive edge in the workplace.”

Many of the titles are presented in well-designed formats that make it easy for readers to easily switch between chapters.

TK Park’s library bookmark app functions similarly to physical bookmarks but includes additional features. The app keeps track of what the patron has read and suggests other titles in the same field as well as other fields that their choices indicate they might be interested in.

S 225845275

“It will determine which genre best suits you. So you don’t just read for the sake of reading or because  someone asks you to.  You will read with a goal in mind and put the ideas you learn into action,” Mr. Kittiratana suggests. “In addition to books that are relevant and beneficial to your studies or career, we should read books that teach us life lessons.”

TK Park, which is located on the 8th floor of Central World on Ratchadamri Road, is well-equipped for self-service. Patrons can handle the lending and return processes on their own, eliminating the need for physical contact.

Creating an ecosystem of learning

TK Park is still dedicated to creating and sustaining a lifelong learning ecosystem. To achieve this, the center teams up with a variety of partners allowing it to offer an ever-expanding range of digital services. For example, the Libby by Overdrive app allows TK Park members to read English-language e-books and e-audiobooks from publishers worldwide for free. So far, the app has over 16,000 titles available.

Furthermore, TK Park collaborates with over 300 learning centers in local communities and other organizations to provide learning tools to those in need. The network currently consists of 29 knowledge centers spread across 22 provinces in the country.

“There’s a lot to do and we can’t complete the mission on our own,” Mr. Kittiratana admits. “Collaborating with our partners provides us with access to more knowledge, tools and resources to help us build the comprehensive learning ecosystem we envision.”

Upskilling is essential for today’s success

“Upskilling has always been important, but it is absolutely essential in today’s pandemic-changed world. So, everyone, please take advantage of what TK Park has to offer. We’ll assist you find everything you need to take your next steps.”
