Dr. Dhanakorn Srisooksai, chief executive officer of the Thai Media Fund, says 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and China, a milestone celebrated as the “Golden Jubilee of Thailand–China Friendship.” This significant occasion is a key reason why the Guangxi Radio and Television Bureau has selected Thailand as the host country for this year’s ASEAN-China Media Week, which has the objectives to strengthen cultural and media cooperation between the two nations and explore new opportunities for future collaboration on building the community with a shared future. Thailand Tightens Cannabis Control as 18,000 Shops Must Adapt

BANGKOK — Thailand’s government has moved to significantly tighten control over cannabis sales, requiring prescriptions for all purchases and forcing thousands of businesses to adapt their operations after the health minister signed new regulations this week.

New Regulations Take Effect

Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin signed an order on Monday, June 23, banning cannabis shops from selling products to customers without valid medical prescriptions. The regulation also seeks to reclassify cannabis buds as controlled herbal medicine, marking a dramatic shift from the country’s previous liberal approach to cannabis sales.

The move comes after the Pheu Thai Party-led government took further steps to address public concerns over cannabis accessibility, following the withdrawal of the Bhumjaithai Party from the cabinet coalition.

Massive Industry Impact

More than 18,000 licensed cannabis shops across Thailand will need to overhaul their business practices under the new rules, according to Dr. Somrak Chingsaman, director-general of the Thai Health Ministry’s Department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine.

Under the updated regulations, cannabis flowers can only be sold to patients holding prescriptions from qualified medical practitioners. Thailand has approximately 30,000 licensed traditional medicine practitioners nationwide, plus additional modern medical doctors, pharmacists, and dentists authorized to prescribe cannabis-based treatments.

Strict Compliance Measures

Cannabis shop operators must now verify prescriptions carefully, checking doctor registration numbers, diagnoses, and daily dosages. Prescriptions can be issued for up to 30 days, typically allowing about one gram per day or 30 grams per month. Purchases exceeding these amounts may trigger investigations for suspected recreational use.

The Department of Traditional and Alternative Medicine plans random compliance checks and will hold online training sessions for doctors on July 9. Additional training programs are being developed for shop operators to support patient care protocols.

Background and Public Concerns

Thailand became the first Asian country to decriminalize cannabis in 2022, largely due to advocacy by the Bhumjaithai Party during the previous Prayut Chan-o-cha administration. The policy boosted tourism and agricultural sectors while spawning thousands of retail businesses.

However, the government faced mounting public criticism over allegations that inadequate regulation made cannabis accessible to minors and contributed to addiction problems. The Pheu Thai Party consistently signaled its intention to bring cannabis back under stricter government control.

somsak cannabis1

“When cannabis was removed from the narcotics list, society didn’t fully agree. Draft legislation couldn’t reach consensus in parliament, causing social chaos because it came about unnaturally,” Minister Somsak explained during a Wednesday meeting with cannabis business representatives.

Addiction Concerns Rise

Phanurat Lukboon, secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, said his agency is prepared to study and implement the regulatory changes. He cited research from his office showing that cannabis addiction rates spiked significantly after decriminalization.

Assistant to Public Health Minister Thanakrit Jit-areerat noted that children under 15 in Roi Et province are using cannabis recreationally, creating serious social problems. His office has ordered nationwide inspections of illegal cannabis operations following numerous public complaints.

Industry Reassurances

Despite the restrictions, officials emphasized that legitimate medical cannabis businesses will receive full government support. Minister Somsak stated that the government understands the difficulties faced by businesses that have already invested in cannabis operations.

“Regardless of whether cannabis returns to narcotic status in the future, it won’t impact operators conducting medical cannabis business. The government will fully support medical applications,” he said.

Quality Control Measures

The new regulations require all cannabis products to come from certified cultivation sources, addressing previous issues with substandard products, chemical growth enhancers, and illegal smuggling operations.

Thanakrit defended against criticism that the policy changes are politically motivated, characterizing the issue as primarily social rather than political.
“While some may label this as political, this is about addressing public concerns. It’s politicians’ responsibility to solve social problems,” he said.

The regulations are now in effect, with enforcement agencies increasing staff to crack down on illegal sales and consumption in retail establishments.

Thailand Central Bank Holds Rates at 1.75% Amid Export Concerns

interest rate
Sakkapop Panyanukul, Secretary of the Monetary Policy Committee

BANGKOKThailand’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 6-1 to keep the country’s benchmark interest rate unchanged at 1.75 percent on Wednesday, despite growing concerns about the economic outlook and mounting pressure from trade policy uncertainties.

The decision comes as Thailand’s economy faces a complex mix of near-term resilience and medium-term challenges, with exports driving current growth but facing headwinds from potential U.S. tariffs and geopolitical tensions.

Economic Growth Outpaces Expectations

Thailand’s economy expanded more robustly than anticipated in the first half of 2025, driven primarily by strong manufacturing production and front-loaded exports. The central bank projects economic growth of 2.3 percent for 2025, up from earlier estimates, partly due to stronger-than-expected first quarter performance.

“Export growth, particularly in electronics and front-loaded goods to the U.S., has supported manufacturing and related-service sectors,” said Sakkapop Panyanukul, Secretary of the Monetary Policy Committee, announcing the decision.

However, the bank expects growth to decelerate significantly in the second half of the year, with the economy projected to expand by just 1.7 percent in 2026 as export momentum fades and domestic consumption weakens.

Trade Policy Risks Cloud Outlook

The committee cited increasing risks to merchandise exports stemming from U.S. trade policies as a key concern for the economic outlook. The potential for higher U.S. tariffs has already prompted some companies to accelerate shipments, contributing to current export strength but potentially undermining future performance.

Private consumption is also expected to moderate as income growth slows and consumer confidence weakens. The central bank has revised down its projections for tourist arrivals, though tourism receipts continue to expand due to higher per-visitor spending.

Inflation Remains Subdued

Headline inflation is projected to remain well below the central bank’s target range, at just 0.5 percent in 2025 and 0.8 percent in 2026, primarily due to lower energy and fresh food prices. Core inflation is expected to reach 1.0 percent this year and 0.9 percent next year.

Despite the low inflation environment, the committee noted that medium-term inflation expectations remain anchored within the target range, and the current low levels reflect supply-side factors rather than broad-based deflationary pressures.

Credit Conditions Tighten

Financial conditions present another challenge, with overall credit growth remaining negative as banks exercise caution in lending, particularly to small and medium enterprises and low-income households. Credit quality has continued to deteriorate, especially in SME and housing loans.

The committee highlighted that part of the credit contraction stems from subdued business demand and increased loan repayment, while financial institutions remain cautious about extending new credit given rising risks.

Dissenting Voice Calls for Rate Cut

One committee member voted to reduce the policy rate by 0.25 percentage points to 1.50 percent, arguing that a cut would help alleviate interest rate burdens and support economic adjustment for those affected by the weakening outlook.

However, the majority of committee members prioritized maintaining the current rate, emphasizing the importance of timing and effectiveness of monetary policy amid high uncertainties and limited policy space.

Policy Stance Remains Flexible

The central bank stressed that monetary policy should remain accommodative to support the economy going forward, noting that previous rate cuts have already provided some cushion against prevailing risks.

“The Committee assesses the economic outlook to remain highly uncertain and stands ready to adjust monetary policy going forward to align with the economic and inflation outlook and associated risks,” the statement said.

The Thai baht has appreciated slightly against the U.S. dollar, driven by external factors and moving in line with regional currencies. The committee said it would continue to closely monitor credit growth and credit quality, which could have implications for broader economic activities.

The decision reflects the central bank’s cautious approach to balancing growth support with financial stability concerns, as Thailand navigates an increasingly complex global economic environment marked by trade tensions and domestic structural challenges.

WASTE MATTERS AT MARRIOTT BONVOY PORTFOLIO’S OF HOTELS & RESORTS

WASTE MATTERS AT MARRIOTT BONVOY PORTFOLIO’S OF HOTELS & RESORTS IN THAILAND & CAMBODIA

Marriott Business Council Thailand marks World Environment Day on June 5th with a series of innovative food waste initiatives, including the upcycling and recycling of used coffee grinds

Bangkok, Thailand:  Something sustainable is brewing at Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of hotels and resorts in Thailand and Cambodia! As the planet prepares to mark World Environment Day on June 5th, 2025, Marriott Thailand Business Council has revealed a series of eco-friendly activities to eliminate food waste across the kingdom, including a coffee upcycling initiative.

Under the “Waste Matters” program at JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok, BBCO coffee bar is harnessing the natural benefits of its used fresh coffee grinds. These nutrient-rich waste products are already donated to Bangkachao Farm for composting and organic farming, and now, the baristas at BBCO will offer coffee grinds free-of-charge to guests, who can use them to fertilize their garden, repel bugs, or even exfoliate their skin! The hotel also works with a local research studio to help transform food waste into green building materials.

Fresh coffee is a focus of food waste reduction at many other Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of hotels in Thailand, including The Ritz-Carlton, Bangkok, which donates its used coffee grinds to One Bangkok for landscape gardening, Marriott Executive Apartments Sukhumvit Park, Bangkok, which is creating a sustainable coffee scrub for its hotel associates, Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa, which has launched a coffee scrub promotion at its Quan Spa, and Renaissance Pattaya Resort & Spa, which has already successfully converted 524kg of coffee into garden compost in 2025. Upcycling activities are also being adopted at Courtyard Siem Reap Resort in Cambodia, where coffee grinds are used to nourish the lush tropical gardens.

image2 31

At The Westin Grande Sukhumvit, Bangkok, a holistic food waste program sees fresh coffee grinds infused into a natural fertilizer to nourish the hotel’s gardens, and other organic waste either transformed into fish food or collected by the local authorities for municipal composting. The St. Regis Bangkok works with a local company to responsibly process its food waste, Bangkok Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park creates soaps, glasses, food trays and other innovative products from old oyster shells, and Vana Belle, a Luxury Collection Resort, Koh Samui crushes up eggshells to fertilize its gardens.

Le Méridien is fully committed to sustainable operations in Thailand. Le Méridien Bangkok has its own composting machine to process organic waste onsite, and Le Méridien Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok Golf Resort & Spa has adopted a series of initiatives, including a “Waste to Energy” project that incinerates waste to eliminate toxic gases and reduce the impact on landfill, plus the recycling of coffee grinds to make an organic body scrub and plant fertilizer. In Thailand’s far north, Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort has a comprehensive food waste program that includes the transformation of used coffee into scrub soaps for the spa, food scraps, fruit peel and eggshells retained for fertilizer, and the donation of surplus high-quality breakfast items to feed underprivileged local children.

All of these initiatives are guided by “Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction,” Marriott International’s global sustainability and social impact platform. By integrating eco-friendly practices into its daily operations, the group is striving to reduce food waste by 50%, water intensity by 15%, and carbon intensity by 30%. Marriott has already abolished single-use plastics, and is in the process of rolling out EV charging stations across Thailand. Ultimately, the company is striving to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Celebrated annually on June 5th, World Environment Day was launched by the United Nations to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by many governments, non-governmental organizations, and businesses, including Marriott International.

Swedish Man Arrested at Pattaya Condo for Major Fraud Case in Europe

Thai police arrested a Swedish national wanted on a red notice warrant for transnational fraud at a condominium in Pattaya District, Chonburi Province, on June 24, 2025.

PATTAYA — Immigration police have arrested another Nordic tourist in a major fraud case, this time a Swedish national who was wanted by Stockholm courts and European authorities on serious fraud charges. The suspect was apprehended at a condominium in Pattaya.

Police Lieutenant General Chairit Anurit, Commander of Immigration Bureau 3, ordered the investigation team to arrest Mr. Ludde, 39, a Swedish national who was subject to a red notice warrant for transnational fraud. He was captured at a condominium in Pattaya District, Chonburi Province.

According to information received by Thai police, Ludde committed serious fraud in 11 cases, using forged documents and impersonating representatives of various companies. He used fake driver’s licenses to trick businesses into delivering goods and services without payment between September 13, 2021, and April 11, 2025. The total damages amounted to 1,157,183 Swedish kronor (approximately $106,000 USD).

Additionally, he attempted to commit fraud in two more cases, representing attempted damages of 304,631 Swedish kronor (approximately $28,000 USD).

Two arrest warrants were issued against him: a Stockholm District Court warrant dated June 2, 2025, and a European Arrest Warrant dated June 4, 2025.

The suspect caused damages to 11 European businesses by posing as a businessman to fraudulently obtain goods and services. The Immigration Bureau 3 investigation team tracked him down and arrested him at the condominium he was using as residence. He has been detained for legal proceedings, and authorities will coordinate with Swedish officials for further action.

Lieutenant General Chairit revealed that this operation follows orders from the National Police Chief, emphasizing the government’s urgent policy to crack down on transnational criminals. This effort aims to prevent and suppress foreign nationals who infiltrate the country to commit crimes, posing threats to public peace and Thailand’s national security.

One day earlier, Immigration Division 3 officers have arrested a 33-year-old Finnish criminal wanted on an INTERPOL Red Notice for serious crimes including murder and drug cases in Norway.

Trump Says Israel-Iran Ceasefire ‘Is In Effect’ Israeli Planes Won’t Attack Anymore

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Israel was going to “turn around” its jets and stop attacking Iran and their ceasefire was “in effect” on Tuesday after briefly faltering.

“ISRAEL is not going to attack Iran. All planes will turn around and head home, while doing a friendly ‘Plane Wave’ to Iran,” Trump, as he pressed both sides to abide by the ceasefire, posted on social media. “Nobody will be hurt, the Ceasefire is in effect!”

Earlier, in comments to reporters at the White House before departing for the NATO summit at The Hague, Trump had expressed disappointment over attacks that had continued beyond an early Tuesday deadline to stop hostilities.

“They violated it, but Israel violated it, too,” Trump said. He added, ”I’m not happy with Israel.”

“I didn’t like the fact that Israel unloaded right after we made the deal,” Trump said. “And now I hear Israel just went out because they felt violated by one rocket that didn’t land anywhere.”

The Republican president expressed deep disappointment with both sides after holding out the agreement he helped broker as validation for his strategic gamble of ordering U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Iran would stop its attacks if Israel would. And Israel also confirmed that it had reached its aims of its operations and would cease hostilities.

But the tentative truce faltered Tuesday when Israel accused Iran of launching missiles into its airspace after the ceasefire was supposed to take effect and vowed to retaliate.

Iran’s military denied firing on Israel, state media reported, but explosions boomed and sirens sounded across northern Israel midmorning, and an Israeli military official said two Iranian missiles were intercepted.

Trump’s frustration was palpable as he spoke to reporters, using an expletive to hammer home his point.

“I’m not happy with them. I’m not happy with Iran, either, but I’m really unhappy with Israel going out this morning,” Trump said. “We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f—- they’re doing.”

The president then took to his Truth Social platform to warn Israel to end its attacks.

“ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION,” Trump posted. “BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!”

She has made history by winning a global gold medal for her outstanding creation, the “Yorn Roi Bag” ( A Triangle Grass Bag with Sterling Silver Engraving), at the 8th China Shanghai International Invention & Innovation Expo 2025.

This outstanding achievement builds upon the national gold medal previously awarded to the “Yorn Roi Bag,” underscoring Nan’s youth’s limitless potential and creativity, especially students from Kanchanapisek College of Fine Arts, supported by the mentorship of Doi Silver.

As Pimpaworn Roongrachatawanich, a co-founder of Doi Silver, beautifully articulated: “Greater club rush from the peak of  Phu Fah Mountain, silver adornments from Doi Silver, blended by Nong Ploy, a student from Phukha Wittayakhom School, continuing her silversmithing studies at Kanchanapisek College of Fine Arts, supported by the Doi Silver Company.” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates the essence of the award-winning piece.

The “Yorn Roi Bag” is far more than an accessory; it is a profound work of art that seamlessly integrates the local wisdom of Nan province. By meticulously weaving “triangle grass,” a native plant, with the exquisite craftsmanship of “sterling silver engraving,” this creation achieves a congruent balance. The bag not only captivates with its beauty but also promotes the value of local materials and traditional artisanal skills to a global stage.

Such success would not have been possible without the invaluable support from all those involved, particularly Mr. Phaiwet Wangbon, the principal advisor; the management team from the Doi Silver Factory; and the advisory teachers at Doi Silver. Crucially, the unwavering dedication of Ms. Aiyada Homdok, the creator, has been a fountain of inspiration and a commendable role model for younger generations. Furthermore, the collaborative efforts of Ms. Chaowaphan Rungrachatawanich, a special lecturer in the dual-vocational system at Doi Silver and a fifth-generation heir of Doi Silver Factory Co., Ltd., were instrumental in bringing this masterpiece to life.

This international accolade undeniably affirms that “Doi Silver” is not merely a producer of silver products but a vibrant hub for learning, fostering creativity, and championing local cultural heritage to the world. We commend this magnificent accomplishment and extend our continued encouragement to Doi Silver and all its talented students to continue producing works of global standard, thereby bringing enduring prestige to Nan province on the world stage.
