Foreigner Robs Koh Samui Convenience Store

CCTV footage of an armed robbery in a Family Mart on Koh Samui Island, 29 April 2014.

SURAT THANI — Police say an armed foreigner robbed a convenience store on Koh Samui island yesterday and took off with more than 178,000 baht in cash.

The robbery took place at a Family Mart store at around 10:30 a.m., according to the police. The cashier, Metta Laksanasuk, 28, said she and her coworker were counting approximately 200,000 baht in cash in preparation for a bank deposit when a man walked into the store and pretended to browse through goods.

Shortly afterwards, the suspect ran to the counter, took out a small handgun, and forced Ms. Metta and the other cashier to leave the counter before taking 178,350 baht from the pile of money, Ms. Metta said.

According to Ms. Metta, the suspect fled the scene in a Toyota Vios with a license plate that had been covered with white paper. The police, upon being alerted by Ms. Metta, chased but failed to catch the suspect.

The suspect is described as an approximately 175 centimetre tall, dark-haired Caucasian in his 30s.

Pol.Col. Satit Prom-utai, the chief of Bo Put Police Station on Koh Samui island, said the police have a suspect in mind but are still in the process of investigating.

The immigration and tourist police have been contacted to provide the officers with additional details about the suspect, Pol.Col. Satit said.

Police have also released CCTV footage of the incident to seek the public’s help in identifying the perpetrator.

Thief Steals From Football Team During Play-Off Game

PATHUM THANI — A university football team’s locker room was raided by a thief while they were competing in a play-off game last night.

The police received reports about the theft yesterday evening from staff at Klong Six Pathum Thani Sports Stadium.

Members of the Rangsit University FC told police that after starting a 4:00 p.m game for Division 2 League of AIS Football Tournament, they returned to their locker room during half-time to find their belongings ransacked, with many items missing.

Among the stolen items were 11 iPhones, one iPad, and a large sum of cash, the players said.

Pol.Col. Wanchai Chaeng-arie said the CCTV footage captured images of a potential suspect exiting the stadium with the stolen goods, but the footage did not capture the moment he broke into the locker room.

The officer added that the police are tracking down the locations of the stolen phones, and have asked for cooperation from all the mobile phone shop owners in the area to inform police immediately if the suspect attempts to sell the iPhones to their shops.

Citing Fear of Protest Clashes, Govt Extends ISA

Caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra leaving today's cabinet meeting at the national science museum, 28 April 2014.

BANGKOK — The head of the National Security Council has insisted that it is necessary to extend the Internal Security Act (ISA) for another 61 days in order to prevent clashes between rival protest groups.

Pro-government Redshirts have scheduled their next mass rally on 6 May, while the anti-government People's Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD) has also promised "one last struggle" against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in the coming weeks.

"I have to admit I am concerned by these assemblies," said National Security Council Chief Lt.Gen. Paradorn Pattanatabutr at a science museum in Pathumthani province where today's cabinet meeting was held.

"[We] have to monitor the situation closely. At this point, there are many potential perpetrators. Third-hand parties have infiltrated the demonstrators. The violence is also spreading further."

He added, "I will stress to the authorities that their priority should be to separate the two large protest groups in order to avoid confrontation."

Nevertheless, Lt.Gen. Paradorn insisted that the government can contain the situation, and there is no need to re-impose a state of emergency over Bangkok in the foreseeable future.

"I believe the ISA can contain the situation. We don't need to use special laws," Lt.Gen. Paradorn said.

The extension of the ISA will last for 61 days, until the end of June. In theory, the ISA grants law enforcement authorities increased power to respond to protesters, including the authority to bar demonstrators from entering particular roads or buildings, detain suspects without charges, and censor the media.

Deputy Prime Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul said he will advise Ms. Yingluck to decrease the number of army troops deployed to oversee the streets of Bangkok.

Mr. Surapong said a lighter presence of troops will help avoid attacks on military personnel, such as the alleged shooting and beating of an army colonel that occured at the hands of PCAD guards last week.

Mr. Surapong said he expects the number of soldiers currently deployed throughout Bangkok to drop from 10,000 to as low as 3,000.

Red Fugitive Ko Tee Salutes Murdered Poet

Redshirt supporters honor murdered activist and poet Kamol Duangphasuk, aka "Mai Nueng."

BANGKOK — Hundreds of Redshirt supporters packed the grounds of Wat Samien Naree Temple today to bid their final farewell to the pro-government poet and activist who was murdered last week.

Kamol Duangphasuk, 45, was shot dead by a pair of masked assassins on 23 April while he was starting his car in a restaurant parking lot in Bangkok.

Mr. Kamol, commonly known by his pen name Mai Nueng Gor Gunthee, was a longtime activist who was critical of the country’s lese majeste (insult of monarchy) laws. In the final years of his life, Mr. Kamol became closely aligned with the pro-government Redshirt movement.

Today’s cremation ceremony for Mr. Kamol was chaired by Jatupon Prompan, the chairperson of the Redshirt umbrella group the United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD). Over 5,000 Redshirts also attended the ceremony.

Although police have not determined a clear motive behind Mr. Kamol’s murder, many Redshirt activists who knew him privately have speculated that the activist was targeted in revenge for his alleged involvement with violent attacks on anti-government protesters in recent months.

The purported link between Mr. Kamol and the political violence that has beleaguered Bangkok since last November was corroborated by a letter reportedly hand-written by Wuttipong Kochthammakul, a "hardcore" Redshirt activist who has gone in hiding since he was charged with lese majeste several weeks ago.

The purported letter was published on the Facebook account of one of Mr. Wuttipong's close friends. In the letter, Mr. Wuttipong, aka "Ko Tee," expressed shock over Mr. Kamol's death, and claimed to be currently living in exile in Cambodia.

Mr. Wuttipong wrote that he greatly missed the time when he and Mr. Kamol participated in "secret works," most of which were successful, the letter says.

"Please rest in peace," Mr. Wuttipong wrote in the letter. "The guerilla unit we have organised, both overground and underground, along with our idea-ideology-method of struggle, is still there."

The fugitive activist also saluted Mr. Kamol for being the "brain" of the “people's struggle” movements.

He added, "Ten are killed, but hundreds of thousands more will be born. This is what we say, and it will be true. The Hundred Bundled Red Bamboos Campaign will continue in its resolve to unite [the masses] into a great log that shall break apart the wall of aristocracy."

It is unclear what “The Hundred Bundled Red Bamboos Campaign” refers to.

Mr. Wuttipong has not been seen in public since royalist activists filed lese majeste charges against him for negative comments he made about His Majesty the King in an interview with Vice News.

Snake Ridden Community Told To Build Spirit Shrine

SUPHANBURI — A gated community in Suphanburi province suffering from an infestation of cobra snakes has been advised by a necromancer to appease the “angry snake goddess” by building her a shrine.

Somchai Chotiyanon, 41, of Jaranai 2 Village, made headlines in Thai media when hordes of venomous snakes began invading his home last week. Mr. Somchai said that on an average day, his family has encountered 5-6 snakes in their home. In total, he has counted at least 30 snake intruders so far.

Mr. Somchai said he is not sure where the snakes are coming from, or why they are so intent on intruding his property.

The snakes have also invaded the homes of some of Mr. Somchai's neighbours, killing several guard dogs in the process.

At first Mr. Somchai tried to trap and kill the snakes, but after a poisonous snake bite sent him to the hospital, he decided to seek help from authorities instead.

In response to Mr. Somchai's call for help, Suphanburi local authorities dispatched workers to clear a nearby wooded area suspected to be the snakes' lair and seal all of the drainages in the community.

Chantima Phoprae, a self-styled necromancer who claimed she could communicate with a "snake goddess," also arrived to help advise Mr. Somchai on how to stem the invasion of snakes into his home.

Ms. Chantima told Mr. Somchai that the snakes were likely a manifestation of an enraged snake goddess who is seeking "revenge" on his family for the crimes humans have committed against snakes. The necromancer suggested that Mr. Somchai build a shrine dedicated to the snake goddess in his home and surround his property with smaller statues of snakes to symbolise the children of the sacred goddess. Ms. Chantima said  a religious ceremony is also needed to appease the snakes’ anger, and to pass good merits to their spirits in the afterworld.

"Whether you will do it is entirely up to you," Ms. Chantima said. "But if you do, I can assure you that your family will be happy."

Mr. Somcha’s 16-year-old daughter Chantima Chotiyanon said her father has decided to conduct the religious service dedicated to the snakes' spirits.

"So we can have peace of mind," Ms. Chantima said.

However, Somphot Weerakul, an snake expert and assistant professor at Khon Kaen University, told Daily News that the incident is unlikely to be caused by anything supernatural.

Mr. Somphot was quoted as saying that he believes the snakes were simply moving to a cooler location in response to the warm weather.

Some of the female snakes Mr. Somchai killed may have also left traces of their blood in his home, which could have attracted more male snakes in the area, Mr. Somphot added.

3 Cops Killed At Checkpoint by 'Speeding' Motorist

BANGKOK — Three police officers were killed last night when a motorist lost control of his vehicle and slammed into their checkpoint on a highway in Bangkok.

Police in Taweewattanadistrict received reports about the accident at midnight and arrived at the scene on Boromratchachonnanee Road with rescue workers to find an obliterated police checkpoint with a crashed, blood-stained Mitsubishi Pajero parked 30 metres away.

Two police officers were found dead, and four other officers were severely injured by the crash. One of the wounded officers later died at a hospital, and the rest remain in critical condition, medical workers said.

The police arrested the driver of the vehicle, who was identified as Nawapon Petchkaew, 24.

Pol.Cpt. Wasan Chaemmankong said Mr. Nawapon was speeding down a highway ramp when he lost control of his car. He eventually crashed it into a tent of police officers at Bangkok Yai Police checkpoint, before colliding with another car 30 metres away.

Some of the police officers were "dragged" by the car until it came to a halt, Pol.Cpt Wasan added.

Pol.Maj.Gen. Chayut Thanataweerat said the two police officers who died were "rookies" who had recently started working with the police force.

Mr. Nawapon was given an alcohol test but the results showed he was not intoxicated at the time of the crash, Pol.Maj.Gen. Chayut said. Mr. Nawapon will also be tested to determine whether he was under the influence of any illegal drugs at the time of the accident, said Pol.Maj.Gen. Chayut.

It is not immediately clear whether Mr. Nawapon has been charged with a crime.

Armed Soldier Arrested With Map of PCAD Rally Site

BANGKOK — Police say they have arrested a soldier and a student carrying firearms and a map of an anti-government protest site in Bangkok.

The pair was reportedly arrested shortly after midnight at a security checkpoint on Rama IX Road in Huai Kwang district.

The suspects were identified as Sgt. Jakkrapong Siprom, 27, a soldier working in the Royal Thai Army's Signal Department, and Sattawat Chaiyapon, 24, a university student.

According to the police, a search of their vehicle turned up one MP5 submachine gun, one Glock handgun, 56 rounds of 9 mm. ammunition, 17 rounds of .223 ammunition, a grenade, a flashlight, radio equipment, and a pair of balaclavas.

The suspects were also carrying a detailed map of the area around Lumpini Park where supporters of the People's Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD) have been organizing rallies against the government.

Pro-government activists have repeatedly accused army personnel of tacitly aiding the PCAD by supplying them with weapons and serving in their ranks as "guards," an allegation the army has steadfastly denied.

There is no immediate comment from the Royal Thai Army regarding the arrest.

Suthep Promises 'One Last Fight' Against Govt

Sakoltee Phattiyakul, a prominent anti-government activist, poses for photo with a supporter on a march in Bang Khae district of Bangkok, 27 April 2014.

BANGKOK — Anti-government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban has urged his supporters to prepare for the "last fight" to overthrow the government.

Mr. Suthep, who has made himself secretary-general of the People's Committee for Absolute Democracy With the King As Head of State (PCAD), told throngs of supporters in an eastern suburb of Bangkok today that the PCAD will soon achieve a great victory.

It is unclear when the "last uprising" against the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will take place. Mr. Suthep has made similar ultimatums in the past.

PCAD leader Sakoltee Phattiyakul, who was arrested by police and recently released on a bail, also attended today’s march in Bang Khae district despite court orders that he not participate in any political gatherings as a condition for his release on bail.

PCAD leaders also planned an event at their campsite in Lumpini Park to celebrate the 180th day of their prolonged rally against Ms. Yingluck.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of pro-government Redshirts organised a rally on the same day in Chaiyaphum province to show their support for the caretaker Prime Minister.

Redshirt leaders have repeatedly warned that millions of pro-government supporters across the country will rise up to defend Ms. Yingluck if she is ousted from her position by extra-legal means.

Savage Chonburi Gang Fights Injure Two

Paramedics administer first aid to a teenager who was shot in a gang fight on Mitsamphan Road, Chonburi province, 27 April 2014.

CHONBURI — Two people were severely injured after two teenage gangs attacked each other with explosives and gunfire in Chonburi province last night.

The fights broke out on Mitsamphan Road in Ban Puek district, police say.

According to an initial police investigation, two rival gangs encountered each other on a beachside road and exchanged "aggressive glances," causing some of the members to fire their weapons into the sky.

A brawl reportedly broke out shortly afterwards and one of the gangs started to retreat along Misamphan Road, but it was pursued by the other gang for at least one kilometre before its members dispersed indifferent directions.

Witnesses said the two groups exchanged gunfire and threw homemade explosives throughout the chase.

One 16-year-old gang member was shot in the head while a 30-year-old bystander was injured in his left arm by an explosive device.

Police say they are trying to locate and arrest the individuals who took part in the fights.
