Singaporean and Chinese Fugitives Arrested at Bangkok Airports

singaporean
Thai authorities arrest a Singaporean businessman suspected of tax evasion at Suvarnabhumi Airport on June 4, 2025.

BANGKOK Thai immigration police arrested two wanted suspects at Bangkok’s international airports in separate cases. The first involved a Singaporean national caught for tax evasion before boarding a flight home at Suvarnabhumi Airport, while the second case saw a Chinese man wanted for fraud in Pattaya apprehended at Don Mueang Airport.

In the first case, Police and Immigration officers jointly arrested a 71-year-old Singaporean businessman, Mr. Liu, at Suvarnabhumi Airport on June 4 as he was preparing to return to Singapore, following an arrest warrant issued last month.

Liu faces charges of jointly evading or attempting to evade value-added tax, committing fraudulent acts through deception or schemes, or similar methods in connection with his role as an authorized director of Isentia Monitoring Services (Thailand) Co., Ltd. from July 1 to October 30, 2015.

The case began when representatives from the Revenue Department filed a complaint with the Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECD) requesting legal action against the company, which operates information services. Tax audits revealed the registered business operator reported zero sales revenue, sales tax, purchase amounts, and purchase tax, resulting in no net tax liability. However, investigators found the company actually generated business income, making their tax filings incorrect.

Further examination of the company’s VAT returns showed additional inaccuracies in their tax declarations. The Revenue Department assessed damages of approximately 5,239,319 baht (around $160,430).

When ECD investigators issued summons for company directors to acknowledge the charges, none appeared, leading authorities to believe they had fled. The Phra Khanong Criminal Court subsequently issued arrest warrants for the responsible directors.

Police tracked Liu’s movements and learned of his planned departure to Singapore before apprehending him at the immigration checkpoint at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

During questioning, Liu denied the charges but acknowledged having served as an authorized director of the company. He has been transferred to ECD investigators for further legal proceedings.

In the second case, immigration officers at Don Mueang Airport arrested Mr. Li Jian, a 38-year-old Chinese national, as he prepared to board a flight to Da Nang, Vietnam. The arrest was made after discovering he was wanted under an arrest warrant issued by Pattaya Provincial Court on June 4, 2025, for fraud charges.

Initial investigations revealed that the suspect and victim were formerly friends. The suspect had requested to exchange Chinese yuan with the victim for USDT digital currency for investment purposes. The victim transferred 38,712.77 USDT tokens, valued at over 1.26 million baht, in exchange for 178,000 yuan. However, the suspect failed to transfer the agreed amount of yuan, prompting the victim to file a police complaint.

Following the arrest, Don Mueang Airport immigration officials coordinated with Pattaya Police Station to transfer the suspect for further legal proceedings on June 5.

Brit Drives Through Udon Thani House Wall, Child Narrowly Escapes

Homeowner Prayoon Saenwian, 52, describes the moments when the car crashed through a concrete fence wall into his home on June 4, 2025.

UDON THANI — A terrifying incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon when a 72-year-old British man’s car crashed through a concrete fence wall into a residential home, narrowly missing an 8-year-old girl.

The incident occurred at 4:10 p.m. on June 4 in Moo 5, Soi Mangkhang 1, Ban Dong Udom, Nong Bua Subdistrict Municipality, Mueang Udon Thani District. Deputy Inspector Phao Saengkongplee of Mueang Udon Thani Police Station received the report and investigated the scene, reviewing CCTV footage from a grocery store across the street.

The footage revealed a Toyota sedan with Khon Kaen license plates accelerating from a parking area beside a coin-operated laundry before crashing through approximately 3.5 meters of concrete fencing. The vehicle penetrated deep into the property, with nearly the entire car ending up inside the residential compound.

Vehicle inspection showed extensive damage including a detached front bumper, broken front grille, completely shattered windshield, and oil leakage. Both driver and passenger airbags had deployed. After the crash, the British driver reportedly opened his car door and walked approximately 200 meters to his rented accommodation without speaking to anyone at the scene.

Homeowner Prayoon Saenwian, 52, described the moments before impact: “I was inside feeding chickens when my 8-year-old niece, nicknamed Gao, who had been coloring on a bamboo bed behind the house, walked down to ask me for money to buy snacks. That’s exactly when the car crashed through our fence. She nearly got hit and started crying hysterically before running to me.”

Witness Saman Kingpudsa, 65, who was digging a drainage ditch near the laundry, observed the British man bringing clothes to wash before the incident.

“He was revving his engine for about 3 minutes – the car kept stalling like there was an engine problem. Then suddenly it shot forward from the parking area and crashed into the fence. When I went to look, I saw the foreigner grabbing a large amount of money from the car’s console before leaving the scene and returning to his accommodation.”

Police later visited the British man’s lodging to question him about the incident and conducted a breathalyzer test, which returned a result of 0.0 for alcohol content. Authorities have arranged for mediation between the homeowner and the British national to settle damages compensation through proper legal channels.

Over 1,800 People Arrested in Crack Down on Asia-Based Scam Operations

HONG KONG (AP) — More than 1,800 people have been arrested in a joint operation across Asia targeting scam networks, police in Hong Kong said on Tuesday.

The crack down involving authorities in six other jurisdictions successfully intercepted fraudulent funds involving about $20 million, Wong Chun-yue, chief superintendent of the city’s police’s commercial crime bureau, said.

The scam networks were closed down during the operation jointly conducted by South Korea, Thailand, Singapore and neighboring Chinese gambling hub Macao, he said.

The operation, which also involved authorities from Malaysia and the Maldives, targeted cases of online shopping and telephone scams, as well as investment and employment frauds. Nearly 33,000 accounts were frozen in the month to May 28, Wong said. Those arrested were aged between 14 and 81.

In one case in March, a finance director in Singapore was scammed through deep-fake videos by someone who claimed to be the chief executive at a multinational corporation. The victim transferred $499,000 to Hong Kong, said Aileen Yap, assistant director of Singapore police’s anti-scam command. Through cross-border cooperation, the money was recovered, she said.

The victims of scams and online fraud often include not only those defrauded but also the workers used by scamming operations, with staff facing threats, violence and poor working conditions.

A United Nations report in April found transnational organized crime groups in East and Southeast Asia are spreading their scam operations across the globe.

For several years, scam compounds have proliferated in Southeast Asia, especially in border areas of Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, as well as in the Philippines, shifting operations from site to site to stay a step ahead of the police, according to the report issued by the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime.

The scam centers in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos are notorious for luring people to work in them under false pretences. Staff are often forced to financially exploit people around the world through false romances, bogus investment pitches and illegal gambling schemes. Many workers find themselves trapped in virtual slavery.

NETA Thailand’s Fire Sale: $9,135 EVs Raise Survival Questions

NETA V-II

BANGKOK — NETA Thailand is conducting a desperate fire sale of its NETA V-II electric vehicles, slashing prices to 299,000 baht ($9,135) per unit as mounting concerns grow over the brand’s survival prospects. Dealers are abandoning the franchise while employees resign en masse.

The Chinese EV manufacturer announced the dramatic price reduction on June 4 through dealer pages, offering the NETA V-II at 299,000 baht ($9,135) or 319,000 baht ($9,745) including VAT, though all warranties have been stripped from the vehicles. The company previously ran wholesale promotions including “Buy 4 – Get 1 Free” deals, effectively offering 20% discounts.

Dealer Network Crumbling

According to Prachachat Business, industry sources reveal NETA’s critical situation in Thailand, with most dealers frantically clearing existing inventory due to uncertainty about the brand’s future. Many prefer holding cash over vehicle stock, leading to widespread dealer defections.

NETA V II

The dealer network has contracted sharply from 66 locations in March to just 53 by May’s end, with further reductions expected. One major dealer closed 8 out of 11 showrooms and service centers, retaining only three operations due to lost confidence in NETA’s business direction.

Urgent Asset Liquidation

NETA Thailand is accelerating delivery of over 600 vehicles to remaining dealers in a bid to clear inventory and convert assets to cash. Company staffing has also declined from approximately 50 employees to 40, with continued reductions anticipated.

Industry sources report that Chinese management has approached several Thai conglomerates seeking buyers for NETA Thailand, with valuations ranging from 1.2-2 billion baht. However, potential investors have rejected the deals, assessing the operation as unsustainable.

NETA V II 2
NETA V-II

Parent Company Financial Crisis

The crisis stems from severe financial problems at parent company Hozon New Energy Automobile Co., Ltd., which reported losses exceeding 100 billion yuan (approximately 400 billion baht). This prompted NETA to cease operations in Malaysia and Singapore, leaving Thailand as its sole focus market outside China.

Despite founder Fang Yunzhou’s previous commitment to Thailand as a key market and export production base for right-hand drive vehicles, liquidity problems have severely impacted local operations.

Market Performance Decline

NETA’s struggles contrast sharply with Thailand’s overall EV growth, where 100% electric vehicle registrations increased 22.35% to 31,009 units in the first four months of 2025. However, NETA sales plummeted 37.3% to just 1,067 units during the same period.

The brand has sold approximately 20,000 vehicles total since entering Thailand, but the dramatic price cuts and dealer exodus signal potential market exit for what was once positioned as a key player in Thailand’s electric vehicle transformation.

BANGKOK — Thailand announced plans to procure Swedish-made Gripen E/F fighter jets in a $595 million deal aimed at replacing its aging F-16 aircraft fleet, which has been in service for over 37 years and faces decommissioning between 2028-2035.

Air Chief Marshal Panpakdee Pattanakul, Commander of the Royal Thai Air Force, led senior air force officials in presenting preparations for the procurement of 4 Gripen E/F aircraft as Phase 1 replacements, with a total budget of 19.5 billion baht ($595 million) out of a planned fleet of 12 aircraft. The announcement was made on June 4.

The press conference included participation from key Swedish officials: Mr. Joakim Wallin, Head of Export FMV; Mr. Lars Tossman, Head of Business Area Aeronautics at Saab; Mr. Mark Gooding OBE, British Ambassador to Thailand; and Mrs. Anna Hammargren, Swedish Ambassador to Thailand.

Gripen E/F is a Cost-Effective Aircraft

The Air Force Commander confirmed that the Gripen E/F has proven to be a cost-effective aircraft, expressing confidence that the Royal Thai Air Force manages public funds with transparency and maximum efficiency. The RTAF plans to sign the contract with the Swedish government by August 2025, with pilot and technician training scheduled to begin immediately to ensure personnel readiness once the aircraft enter service.

“We affirm that the project implementation aligns with our strategic vision to enhance RTAF strength and efficiency, while managing public funds transparently, ensuring value for money, and maintaining verifiable monitoring at all stages,” the Air Force Commander stated.

Thai-Sweden 17-Year Defense Partnership

Swedish Ambassador Anna Hammargren noted the historical significance of the partnership, referencing the first Gripen C/D agreement signed in February 2008, which provided Thailand with world-class air force capabilities and established a foundation for ongoing collaboration in industrial development and educational exchange.

“The Gripen E/F arrangement and Saab’s new offset program will continue building on this solid foundation. I am proud that my country will contribute to reinforced security independence for Thailand with the Gripen. This partnership extends far beyond air force capability development and will bring wide benefits to Thailand and its people for decades to come,” she said.

Air Marshal Prapas Sornchaidee, RTAF Spokesperson, explained that the press conference aimed to present progress and guiding principles of the new fighter aircraft procurement, promoting public understanding while highlighting transparency, value for money, fair competition, and compliance with government policy prioritizing national interests.

The primary objective is to replace aging F-16 aircraft that have served for over 37 years and are scheduled for decommissioning between 2028-2035. Without action, this would impact national defense readiness.

The Gripen E/F features advanced capabilities including AESA Radar, Electronic Warfare systems, and Meteor beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles, designed to meet next-generation combat requirements.

30-Year Technology Lifespan

The deal includes defense offsets worth over 100 billion baht, representing 154.6% of the project value, encompassing Tactical Data Link (Link-T) technology transfer, personnel development, domestic defense industry advancement, and educational and research cooperation with Sweden.

Following the announcement, Air Chief Marshal Panpakdee added that the selected technology is expected to remain viable for 30 years, noting that aerial warfare will increasingly emphasize high-efficiency operations. The selection process focused on aircraft with superior performance capabilities that exceed current inventory standards.

BANGKOK — Taiwan refuted false reports claiming its citizens were trafficked from Thailand to Myanmar scam centers and were refusing repatriation.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Thailand has issued a statement on June 4, 2025 denying fake news reports claiming that Taiwanese nationals were deceived into coming to Thailand and subsequently trafficked to Myanmar for illegal work, with 5 allegedly refusing to return home.

The office emphasized it had never reported that Taiwanese nationals involved with call center gangs refused to return to Taiwan.

The statement detailed the actual situation: “Most Taiwanese nationals involved with call center gangs who work in Southeast Asian countries use Thailand only as a transit point. Upon arrival in Thailand, criminal organizations manage and transport them to scam call centers in Myanmar, Laos, or Cambodia. The relevant Taipei Economic and Cultural Offices of the Taiwan government provide assistance to Taiwanese nationals on a case-by-case basis.”

Assistance Protocol Explained

When Taiwanese nationals escape from scam centers and arrive in Thailand, the office provides legal assistance according to Thai law, including:

  • Helping Taiwanese nationals who entered Thailand illegally to report to Thai police
Cooperating with Thai immigration authorities for orderly repatriation
  • Maintaining close coordination with Thai police, immigration offices, and other relevant Thai agencies

The office expressed hope that Thai authorities would proactively assist Taiwanese nationals involved with call center gangs who are awaiting repatriation.

The Taiwan government and its representative office urged the public to be cautious of false job recruitment information to avoid becoming victims of criminal groups and to protect their personal safety.

Background: January Incident Resurfaces

Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry Permanent Secretary Nattriya Thaweewong had previously clarified on June 3 that after coordinating with relevant agencies including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Royal Thai Police, and Tourism Authority of Thailand, the reports were confirmed to be old news from January.

Ms. Nattriya stated that the original incident involved 8 Taiwanese nationals who voluntarily joined a “free travel tour.” Based on data from TECO, three Taiwanese have returned home while five citizens are still in Myanmar and unwilling to come back.

According to media reports, the three Taiwanese nationals who returned later claimed they had to pay 300,000 New Taiwan Dollars each to escape the scam center. These three individuals have since returned to Taiwan and began giving media interviews, causing the story to resurface recently.

“The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has not remained idle regarding the dissemination of such news. We have coordinated to verify facts and maintain strict vigilance in news dissemination to prevent ripple effects that could further damage tourism confidence,” the ministry’s permanent secretary stated.
