Thai Car Sales Drop in Early 2025; Motor Show Offers Hope

BANGKOK — The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reported that domestic car sales fell to just 49,313 units in February 2025, down 6.68 percent year-on-year. Exports also fell by 8.34 percent, resulting in a sharp decline in car production to 115,487 units, a drop of 13.62 percent. However, battery electric vehicle (BEV) production rose to 7,574 units, a 60.09 percent increase year-on-year.

Ahead of ASEAN’s largest auto show, the Bangkok International Motor Show 2025, which will be held from March 26 to April 6, Surapong Paisitpatanapong, adviser to the president of the Automotive Industry Group, summarized that the market has been declining for two months in a row.

Drops in Production and Sales

Car production totaled 115,487 units in February 2025, a decline of 13.62 percent, mainly due to a 21.26 percent drop in domestic production. In the first two months (January–February), total production amounted to 222,590 units, a decrease of 19.29. Vehicle production for export amounted to 78,535 units in February, a decrease of 9.48 percent.

The cumulative export production in the two months amounted to 153,579 units, a decrease of 15.56 percent. The production of passenger cars in particular plummeted by 47.01, following the decline in export volumes.

Domestic production for sale amounted to only 10,993 units, which corresponds to a sharp decline of 42.1 percent. In total, only 20,507 units were produced in January and February, representing just 13.99 percent of total pickup production and a 46.39 percent year-on-year decline. This includes standard pickups, double cabs and PPVs (pickup passenger vehicles).

In the first two months of 2025, a total of 97,395 cars were sold in Germany, 9.53 fewer than in the previous year. In February alone, 49,313 cars were sold domestically, down 1.2 percent from January and 6.68 percent less than February 2024.

The decline is attributed to tighter credit approvals from financial institutions, particularly for pickup truck buyers, which fell 14.9 percent. The hope is that the upcoming auto show will help boost bookings, especially if lenders ease credit restrictions on pickup trucks.
There will be 54 car brands on display at this year’s Motor Show, including 41 car manufacturers and 13 motorcycle manufacturers.

Government Measures Awaited

The government is also preparing a support program for pickup truck buyers under the “Phee Mee Khlang Kam” (“Big Brother’s Loan Guarantee”) program, in which the Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation (TCG) will provide guarantees for loans to purchase pickup trucks.

This program, which is aimed at small businesses and farmers, is the first initiative of its kind in Thailand and has a budget of 5 billion baht ($148 million).

Applications will be accepted from April 1 to December 31, 2025. The aim is to boost sales and support SMEs that use pickups for their livelihood. Results are expected within two months, although the actual impact will depend on registration rates.

“The car market in 2025 still shows no signs of recovery. The figures for the last two months clearly reflect this. We hope the government’s stimulus measures can help, and we thank the Ministry of Finance for recognizing the hardships of people in all sectors. To further boost pickup sales, we urge the government to amend the regulations to allow non-bank lenders and automakers’ financing institutions to participate in the loan guarantee program,” Surapong said.

U.S. Tariff Concerns Cast Shadow on Exports

Although Thailand exported 81,323 completely built-up (CBU) vehicles in February 2025, a 30.49 percent increase from January, this was still 8.34 percent lower than February 2024. The decline was partly due to model changes in some passenger cars, delaying production and lowering exports to Asia, Europe, North America, Central and South America.

Markets are also on edge awaiting the U.S. decision on vehicle import tariffs set to take effect on 2 April 2025. Several trading partners have reduced orders pending clarity on U.S. policy, while some markets are being disrupted by an influx of low-cost EVs, and others are enforcing stricter carbon emission regulations. As a result, total CBU vehicle exports for Jan–Feb stood at 143,644 units, down 18.12 percent.

EV Bookings Surge Despite Overall Slump

In contrast to the declining sales of traditional vehicles, BEV registrations reached 7,375 units in February 2025, an increase of 16.42 percent compared to the previous month. In the first two months of the year, new BEV registrations totaled 22,086 units, which is only a slight decrease of 0.86 compared to the previous year.

“Prices for electric cars are becoming increasingly competitive, partly because global lithium prices have fallen. As a result, the cost of manufacturing electric car batteries has fallen, which is also pushing down retail prices,” explained Surapong.

“No Devil’s Deal” – Thai PM Says Thaksin Faced Extreme Injustice

BANGKOK — Thai Prime Minister forcefully countered opposition claims during the second day of the no-confidence debate over former PM Thaksin’s 180-day hospital confinement instead of prison time. Opposition members alleged this preferential treatment stemmed from a “devil’s deal” when Pheu Thai formed a coalition with General Prayut Chan-o-cha’s faction.

On March 25, Rangsiman Rome, a core member of the People’s Party, used harsh language to attack both the Prime Minister and Thaksin, drawing multiple objections from Pheu Thai Party members.

During his speech, he outlined a timeline suggesting it was impossible for Thaksin, who appeared healthy while abroad, to suddenly fall seriously ill upon returning to Thailand, thus receiving special privileges to stay in hospital. He also pointed to contradictory evidence showing Thaksin’s youngest daughter traveling to ski in Japan while her father was supposedly in critical condition.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra rose to categorically reject the “devil’s deal” allegations, stating they were “100% untrue.” She emphasized that her father ranks among those in the country who have suffered the greatest injustice.

She countered the accusations by noting that when her father returned to Thailand last year, she was not yet Prime Minister and had no authority to direct any government officials. She added that even if the People’s Party had formed the government then, her father would still have returned. Regarding the royal pardon process, she stated it is the right of every prisoner and follows established procedures that she would not interfere with, but remains available to anyone with legal cases.

As for her father’s actual medical condition, which the opposition claimed was fake, she said no matter how she explained it, the opposition wouldn’t believe her, so she suggested waiting for the Medical Council’s investigation findings. She could only share her perspective as a daughter.

“Throughout the past 20 years in our country, everyone knows well the difficulties our fellow citizens have faced regarding justice. If you’re looking for someone who has faced injustice, Thaksin is among the top who have received unfair treatment. He was not only stripped of political power but also had his assets frozen and faced multiple assassination attempts,” she stated.

The Prime Minister recalled that she was just 18 years old and still in university when these events unfolded. Communication tools weren’t as advanced as they are today, so when news broke, she had to wait to learn what had happened to her father. This wasn’t a one-time occurrence but happened repeatedly.

She mentioned visiting her father abroad while pregnant with her first child during the COVID pandemic, when travel was difficult and vaccines weren’t yet available. These were painful family experiences.

“As a daughter, I naturally worry because I love my father. I am 100% a daddy’s girl,” Paetongtarn said. “Throughout the debate, some members have called for me to resign as Prime Minister, which is within their rights. But one thing they cannot do is ask me to resign from being a daughter or a mother,” said Paetongtarn.

The PM is expected to survive her first no-confidence vote on Wednesday supported by her ruling coalition which commands a majority in the House of Representatives.

Japanese Man Acquitted of 1966 Murders Awarded Record Criminal Compensation

(Kyodo News via AP)

SHIZUOKA — Iwao Hakamata, 89, who was acquitted in a retrial over the 1966 murder of a family of four in central Japan, has been awarded a record sum in criminal compensation from the Japanese government after spending over 47 years in prison following a death sentence, his legal team said Tuesday.

The order to pay around 217 million yen ($1.44 million) was issued by the Shizuoka District Court on Monday, with the team saying the compensation was granted for his more than four decades of physical detention, from his arrest until his release.

In January, the team submitted a compensation claim to the district court on behalf of Hakamata, who still suffers from the effects of his confinement.

Hakamata’s acquittal was finalized last October, marking the end of his family’s decades-long fight to free him from death row. Investigative authorities fabricated evidence in the case, which took place in Shizuoka Prefecture, according to the court.

The signs read “Acquittal to Mr. Iwao Hakamada, ” right, and “Acknowledged fabrications of evidence.” (Kyodo News via AP)

The fabrication served as the “basis for determining the amount of compensation,” the court said, with the presiding judge noting Hakamata spent about 33 years of his detention under a death sentence, causing him to endure “extremely severe” mental and physical pain.

Hakamata’s legal team has said it plans to file a lawsuit against Shizuoka Prefecture and the national government by this summer to hold them accountable for the wrongful conviction.

At a press conference in the prefecture, one of Hakamata’s lawyers said, “It is only natural for the highest amount of criminal compensation to be awarded in a death penalty case where fabrication has been acknowledged.”

Referring to the lingering effects of Hakamata’s confinement, the lawyer criticized the central government, saying it had committed a “wrongdoing that 200 million yen cannot possibly atone for.”

PHUKET — Guests at a Phuket hotel were shocked this morning when the body of a foreign man was discovered hanging from a balcony. Security camera footage showed no signs of visitors to the deceased’s room or any evidence of a struggle.

Police Colonel Chatree Chookaew, Commander of Phuket City Police Station, along with forensic doctors from Vachira Phuket Hospital, provincial forensic officers, and staff from the Kusoldharm Phuket Foundation, responded to reports of a foreign national found dead on an exterior balcony of a hotel in Ratsada subdistrict on the morning of March 25.

Authorities identified the deceased as Mr. Roberto, a 77-year-old Argentine national who had been staying on the fifth floor of the hotel. Investigators found a chair and rope tied to the balcony railing, with a cigarette pack and lighter left nearby. Initial examination by forensic doctors revealed self-inflicted wounds on the left wrist. The body was transferred to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a detailed autopsy.

Phuket City Police investigators reviewed security camera footage from March 24 and confirmed that no one had entered the deceased’s room. There were no signs of a struggle, and no personal belongings appeared to be missing from the room. Officials have contacted the Argentine Embassy to notify the deceased’s relatives.

This marks the third suicide by a foreign national in Thailand within the past few days, following the deaths of a 41-year-old German man residing in Nakhon Ratchasima who was facing charges for assaulting a dentist due to mental health issues on March 21, and a 64-year-old American dental professor at Chulalongkorn University who jumped from the 26th floor of a condominium in Bangkok on March 24.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Han Jong-Hee, a senior Samsung Electronics executive credited with elevating the company’s television business, died Tuesday, the company said. He was 63.

Han, a co-chief executive who oversaw the company’s consumer electronics and mobile devices businesses, died at a hospital after being treated for cardiac arrest, Samsung said.

Han joined Samsung in 1988 and spent most of his career in TV-related divisions, during which the company became the world’s leading TV manufacturer. He was appointed co-vice chairman and CEO in 2022.

Samsung, one of the world’s largest technology companies, has dual strengths in components and finished consumer products. The company had separate CEOs for its two major business divisions, the other being computer chips, which are all under the broader leadership of third-generation corporate heir and chairman Lee Jae-yong.

Jun Young Hyun, the semiconductor chief executive, will now take over Han’s duties as the company’s sole CEO, Samsung said in a regulatory filing.

Thai PM Confidently Responds to First No-Confidence Debate

BANGKOKPrime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra confidently responded to opposition accusations during the first day of a no-confidence motion on Monday. With composure and a controlled demeanor, the 38-year-old PM demonstrated what she calls her “Gen-Y Prime Minister” style, offering brief but impactful rebuttals.

The highlight covered by both mainstream media and social platforms was her first stand to address accusations from General Prawit Wongsuwan, head of the Palang Pracharath Party and Pheu Thai’s former coalition partner. When accused of falsely declaring her assets, Paetongtarn referenced the general’s own controversial past involving “borrowed watches” scandal.

“According to my own watch, the senior member has been speaking for 10 minutes with content that is completely untrue,” she remarked before promptly sitting down. This statement mirrored General Prawit’s own brief response during a no-confidence debate when he served as deputy prime minister in 2021.

“I Have Paid More Taxes”

The opposition’s overall strategy focused on allegations that Paetongtarn was being unduly influenced by her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Critics centered their attacks on Shinawatra family business dealings, land purchases, and tax avoidance claims.

In response to fiery accusations from Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, a People’s Party MP who claimed she evaded taxes, the Prime Minister firmly stated: “On the contrary, although I am younger than the debater, I am confident that I have paid more taxes to the state than he has.”

Addressing allegations regarding the purchase of land later developed into the Alpine Golf Course, which was allegedly monastic property, Paetongtarn pointed out that this occurred when she was just 11 years old and not a company director. She emphasized that all family land purchases were properly documented with legal titles issued by government agencies, and any subsequent legal disputes were left to the justice system.

Deal to Bring Thaksin Home

Other accusations against Paetongtarn included failures to address chronic problems such as the slumping economy, air pollution, crime, and corruption. Critics claimed her administration was ineffective because she was serving family interests rather than the country’s, with the opposition framing the debate under the theme “Trading the Country in a Deal.”

Natthapong Ruengpanyawut, leader of the People’s Party (the successor to the dissolved Move Forward Party that won the most seats in the 2023 election), suggested that Pheu Thai’s coalition with former conservative rivals was part of a political bargain to bring Thaksin home. Government supporters countered that Pheu Thai had fully supported the Move Forward Party leader’s bid for prime minister, but Move Forward itself couldn’t form a government.

40 Uyghurs’ Deportation

A significant international issue raised during the debate concerned the deportation of 40 Uyghurs who had been detained in Thailand for over a decade. While the Prime Minister delegated responses on this matter, Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong, who led Thai officials on a visit to Xinjiang last week, defended the decision.

Kannavee Suebsang, leader of the Fair Party, criticized the deportation as damaging Thailand’s neutrality between major powers and drawing condemnation from the United States and European nations.

The Justice Minister explained that detention conditions were inhumane, comparing them to animal cages holding over a thousand people, with four deaths already recorded. He stated that all deportees had volunteered to return after video communications with previously deported Uyghurs, and invited critics to verify this through official information requests.

“Even though we face pressure from major powers, providing 40 people with better lives represents justice and human dignity,” Tawee said. “I regret that some speakers use derogatory language—not just against me, but against people who now have better lives and against China, a UN power that you accuse of cruelty.”

German Man Nabbed After Fleeing Through Window in Phang Nga

The 64-year-old German illegal immigration suspect points to the rear window of the house in Thaimuang District, Phang Nga Province, through which he attempted to escape before being ultimately arrested on March 24, 2025.

PHANG NGAImmigration authorities in Phang Nga province arrested a 64-year-old German national who attempted to escape through a window during a raid on Monday, March 24.

The suspect, identified only as Reiner, had been living illegally in Thailand for four months in the Thaimuang district of Phang Nga, officials said.

According to Immigration officers, Reiner had previously been deported from Thailand. Following intelligence reports, authorities tracked him to a residence in Moo 1, Thaimuang district, where he was found to be staying without proper documentation.

When officers arrived at the property and identified themselves as Immigration officials, Reiner refused to exit the house and attempted to flee through a bedroom window. Officers quickly apprehended him after a brief pursuit.

Reiner confessed to authorities that he had traveled from Germany to Malaysia on July 4, 2024. From there, he flew to Penang before taking a boat to Langkawi. He then used a long-tail boat to enter Thailand illegally, followed by several bus rides to reach Thaimuang.

The German national claimed he had returned to Thailand to visit his ailing mother, who subsequently passed away. Despite this, he continued to stay at the residence for four months without returning to Germany.

Immigration officials have charged Reiner with entering the Kingdom without permission. He has been handed over to Thaimuang Police Station for legal proceedings under Thai immigration law.

Japanese
Immigration police arrest Mr. Kaneda, a 42-year-old Japanese national with ties to criminal organizations, at his residence in Hua Hin, Prachuap Khiri Khan province on March 23, 2025.

BANGKOK — A Japanese national with ties to criminal organizations in Thailand has been arrested following a history of violence and fraud. The suspect is also under investigation for possible human trafficking connections and is wanted on arrest warrants in both Thailand and Japan.

Police Lieutenant General Phanumas Boonyalak, Commander of the Immigration Bureau, revealed that immigration police arrested Mr. Kaneda, a 42-year-old Japanese citizen, at Hua Hin residence, Prachuap Khiri Khan province on March 23. The arrest was made according to a warrant issued by the South Bangkok District Court on February 21, 2025.

Kaneda is accused of committing fraud by using documents and information from a Japanese company registered in Thailand to deceive both Thai nationals and his fellow Japanese citizens into investing in cannabis businesses and various other ventures. The total damages are estimated at 10 million baht.

Further investigation in cooperation with the Japanese Embassy in Thailand revealed that the suspect has been wanted by Japanese authorities since 2017. He is also accused of physically assaulting a fellow Japanese national in Thailand on Sukhumvit Soi 49/13, causing serious injuries including a broken lower jaw and a fractured second molar in the left lower jaw, which required approximately one month of medical treatment.

The victim later returned to Japan to file charges, resulting in another arrest warrant being issued by Japanese authorities.

The suspect most recently entered Thailand on September 19, 2024, through Don Mueang Airport. Police also discovered video evidence related to ransom demands, including footage showing knife cuts to an ear, and conversations about ransom demands and death threats. There is also suspicion of human trafficking in the form of organ trafficking, with evidence showing prices for various organs. This aspect of the case is still under investigation.

Kaneda has admitted to being the person named in the arrest warrant. Officials have transferred him to the Thung Mahamek Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Trat’s Island Trio Sees Tourism Surge Ahead of Songkran Festival

Trat
Tourist numbers to Trat Province have sustained growth in both Thai and international visitors, reflecting the province's success in promoting sustainable tourism.

TRAT — Tourist numbers to Thailand’s Trat province, particularly its three main islands—Koh Chang, Koh Kood, and Koh Mak—have increased significantly since December 2024 through the New Year 2025 period. This sustained growth in both Thai and international visitors reflects the province’s success in promoting sustainable tourism.

Taweesak Wongwilat, Vice President of the Trat Tourism Business Association, reports that international tourists are now booking extended stays of 1-2 weeks. The number of foreign visitors has increased by more than 40% compared to 2024.

“This growth can be attributed to promotional efforts across multiple channels, especially the ongoing campaigns by the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Eastern Region and Trat offices since 2024,” Wongwilat explained.

Koh Chang Bookings Reach Over 80%

Early 2025 initiatives included bringing European tourism operators and influencers to the province to attract international visitors. Most recently, tourist groups from Oman in the Middle East traveled to Koh Chang, boosting the promotion of Trat’s attractions and generating substantial revenue for the province.

“What’s clearly evident is that hotel bookings for the Songkran period in Koh Chang district have already reached over 80%, particularly from international tourists,” noted Wongwilat. Foreign visitors have established online groups showcasing Trat’s attractions, highlighting the beauty of both the sea and forest areas in Koh Chang National Park, as well as the popular “Wan Lai” festivities during Songkran.

“While Thai and international tourists typically flock to these events each year, this year we’re seeing earlier arrivals, increased bookings, and longer stays,” he added.

Mainland Trat Also Seeing Growth

Wararat Chottiwan, owner of Trat City Hotel and committee member of the Trat Tourism Industry Council, said that mainland Trat has also seen consistent hotel bookings. “While the increase isn’t dramatic, it’s better than previous years, thanks to joint efforts by private and public tourism sectors to make the province more attractive to visitors,” she said.
The continuous tourism promotion activities from late 2024 into early 2025, including the various Songkran festivals organized throughout the province, have enhanced Trat’s tourism appeal.

Thailand

Impressive Tourism Statistics

Acting Lt. Korakot Opas, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Trat Office, reported that tourism in Trat has shown steady growth during the first three months of 2025. For the April 2025 Songkran festival period, projected visitor numbers continue to grow:

  • Total visitors: 19,980
  • Tourists (with overnight stays): 19,200
  • Excursionists (day visitors): 780
  • Average occupancy rate: 82.09%
  • Average hotel stay: 1.98 nights
  • Revenue generation: 142-200 million baht
  • Average expenditure per trip: 7,107 baht
  • Available rooms: 11,299
  • Tourist to excursionist ratio: 96:4

April 2025 includes extended holidays for Chakri Day and the Songkran festival, boosting tourist numbers, especially Thai visitors. Various districts are hosting Songkran activities from April 12-26, 2025, with the final “Wan Lai” celebrations scheduled for April 25-26 in Laem Ngop district, which is expected to draw large crowds.
