Singaporean Man Hunted After His Girlfriend Found Murdered in Bangkok

BANGKOK — Thai police are searching for a Singaporean man suspected in the murder of his Thai girlfriend from Khon Kaen province. The victim’s body was discovered in a condominium room in downtown Bangkok.

Thonglor Police Station officers received a report of a murdered woman found in a 50-story condominium on Sukhumvit Soi 39, Watthana District, Bangkok at 6:20 p.m. on March 26. The deceased was later identified as Prao-Pilas, age 30, from Khon Kaen province.

Investigators, alongside forensic doctors from Chulalongkorn Hospital, forensic evidence officials, and Po Tek Tung Foundation volunteers, found her body in the bathroom of the hotel room. The body was wrapped in two layers – a blanket and bed sheet – and was unclothed, with visible wounds and blood on the head.

When examining the victim’s belongings, her friends noted that her luxury brand handbag and expensive watch were missing from the room. Officials have collected remaining items as evidence.

Police interviewed Ms. Suthida Lueamsai, 31, from Khon Kaen, who first discovered the body, and Ms. Emwika Makthi, 34, from Mahasarakham, who reported the incident. The two friends stated they had been unable to contact Prao-Pilas since Monday evening, March 24.

Emwika filed a report on March 26 at Thonglor Police Station and brought the daily record to building management to check the room. Upon arrival, they found the door unlocked, the air conditioner running, and the victim’s body in the bathroom.

Ms. Suthida revealed that Prao-Pilas had been dating a 32-year-old Singaporean man named Daniel. Although their Instagram photos portrayed a loving relationship, Prao-Pilas had told friends that she frequently argued with her boyfriend and was regularly physically abused by him.

Condominium CCTV footage showed the following timeline: On March 23 at approximately 6:42 p.m., elevator footage captured Daniel and Prao-Pilas leaving the room together. Later at around 9:17 p.m., Daniel escorted his Thai girlfriend to the elevator to return to the room.

On March 24 at approximately 12:12 a.m. footage showed Daniel returning to the elevator to go up to the room. On March 25 at approximately 3:15 p.m., Daniel left the room carrying luggage, then exited the building with his belongings and departed in a black Mercedes-Benz.

Investigators from Thonglor Police Station are currently reviewing additional CCTV footage around the scene to track down the suspect boyfriend for questioning.

Two Thai Men Charged With Assaulting British Man to Death

BANGKOK — Thai police have charged two nightclub security guards following the death of a 28-year-old British man in Bangkok after what appears to be a communication breakdown that escalated into a physical altercation.

The incident, which occurred around 2:05 AM on March 24, is under investigation by police officials including Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom, Commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, and other senior officers who have ordered a thorough examination of the circumstances.

The Incident

According to witness statements and security footage, the British man, identified only as Nicholas, was seen running from Phibunsongkhram Bridge along Pracharat Sai 1 Road toward the 91 Karaoke establishment. When he attempted to enter the venue for unknown reasons, he was stopped by a 29-year-old bouncer named Boonchu.

This confrontation reportedly angered Nicholas, who shouted at the bouncer before backing away and continuing to yell as he headed toward Bang Pho intersection.

Shortly after, a second bouncer, 32-year-old Phurinat, emerged from the establishment and, together with Boonchu, followed Nicholas on a Yamaha Nuovo motorcycle. When they caught up with him, Phurinat reportedly asked, “Is there anything I can help you with?”

The British man appeared agitated and jumped onto the motorcycle. Boonchu pushed him away and attempted to communicate using a translation app on his phone, but Nicholas allegedly tried to grab the device.

Fatal Struggle

The situation escalated when Nicholas attempted to steal the motorcycle. Phurinat pulled him off the vehicle, leading to a physical struggle that caused the motorcycle to fall over. Boonchu then joined in, helping to restrain the British man by pinning him to the ground.

During the restraint, Phurinat straddled Nicholas’s waist area while leaning forward, and Boonchu locked his arms and pressed down on his head while the British man was lying on his side. Nicholas subsequently became unresponsive and was later pronounced dead.

Investigation Ongoing

Both suspects have been questioned and maintain they had no malicious intent, claiming they were trying to help and that the confrontation resulted from a language barrier.
Investigators reviewing security footage have confirmed a chokehold was used during the restraint. The two men have been charged with jointly assaulting another person resulting in death.

Police are awaiting the official autopsy results from Phramongkutklao Hospital to determine whether the cause of death was asphyxiation from the restraint. These results are expected within seven days.

Police Colonel Apichai Huanjit, Superintendent of Bang Pho Police Station, stated that authorities have notified immigration police to coordinate with the British Embassy to contact the deceased’s relatives.

Wildfires Ravage Southern South Korea, Killing 26 People and Forcing 37,000 to Evacuate

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Wind-driven wildfires that were among South Korea’s worst ever were ravaging the country’s southern regions, killing 26 people, destroying more than 300 structures and forcing 37,000 people to evacuate, officials said Wednesday.

Officials also said a helicopter crashed during efforts to contain wildfires in the southeastern town of Uiseong, one of the areas hardest-hit by the wildfires. The Korea Forest Service said rescue efforts were underway and it was presumed that the aircraft was operated by one pilot with no crew members.

An ancient Buddhist temple, houses, factories and vehicles were among the structures destroyed in the wildfires that have burned 36,010 hectares (88,980 acres) and injured 30 people, the government’s emergency response center said.

In a televised address, South Korea’s acting President Han Duck-soo said the wildfires that began last Friday were causing worse damage than many other past wildfires.

“Damages are snowballing,” Han said. “There are concerns that we’ll have wildfire damages that we’ve never experienced, so we have to concentrate all our capabilities to put out the wildfires in the rest of this week.”

Han said crews were struggling to extinguish the wildfires because strong winds swept the areas overnight. Han said about 4,650 firefighters, soldiers and other personnel were working Wednesday to extinguish the wildfires with the help of about 130 helicopters. He said that “a small amount” of 5-10 millimeters of rain was expected Thursday.

Observers say the ongoing wildfires are the third biggest in South Korea in terms of land burned.

Officials in several southeastern cities and towns had ordered residents to evacuate Tuesday as firefighters struggled to contain multiple blazes fueled by dry winds. The largest fires were in Andong, the neighboring counties of Uiseong and Sancheong, and the city of Ulsan, according to South Korea’s Interior Ministry.

Earlier on Tuesday, officials had said firefighters had extinguished most of the flames from the largest wildfires in those areas, but wind and dry conditions allowed the blazes to spread again. But efforts to fight the fires were partially suspended overnight as the winds strengthened.

The blaze in Uiseong destroyed nearly half of more than 30 structures at Gounsa, a temple which was said to be originally built in the 7th century. Among the destroyed structures were two state-designated “treasures” — a pavilion-shaped structure built on a stream built in 1668 and a Joseon Dynasty structure built in 1904 to mark the longevity of a king.

The temple’s another state-designated “treasure,” a stone Buddha statue reportedly manufactured in the 8th century, was evacuated to a safe place, according to government and Buddhist officials.

The Justice Ministry said it protectively removed 500 inmates from a detention center in Cheongsong, another southern town, but no damages were reported to the facility.

The Korea Forest Service said it had raised its wildfire warning to the highest “serious” level nationwide Tuesday, requiring local governments to assign more workers to emergency response, tighten entry restrictions for forests and parks, and recommend that military units withhold live-fire exercises.

The 18 dead include four firefighters and government workers who were killed in Sancheong on Saturday after being trapped by fast-moving flames driven by strong winds, according to officials.

Government officials suspect human error caused several of the fires, possibly due to the use of fire while clearing overgrown grass in family tombs or sparks from welding work.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Cruises Through No-Confidence Vote

BANGKOK — In a special parliamentary session on March 26 at 10:00 AM, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra comfortably survived a no-confidence vote, receiving overwhelming support with 319 votes of confidence against 162 votes of no confidence and 7 abstentions. The vote came after two days of debate in the House of Representatives, presided over by House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha.

Out of 490 MPs participating in the vote, former Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai, the former Democrat Party leader, along with three others, abstained despite the Democrat Party being part of the coalition government.

This move was not surprising, as Chuan has long been a staunch opponent of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Paetongtarn’s father. When the media asked after the vote how the Prime Minister’s performance in the House was, Chuan smiled and said, “You have to go ask her father.”

Opposition leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut accused Prime Minister Paetongtarn’s government of prioritizing her family’s interests and those of her father. According to Natthaphong, the unusual coalition between Pheu Thai and its former conservative opponents was strategically formed as part of a political agreement to facilitate Thaksin’s return to Thailand.

The debate focused primarily on criticizing the Prime Minister, alleging that she allowed her father to dominate her work and the government. Opposition members also questioned Thaksin’s special privilege of being detained in a room on the 14th floor of Police General Hospital instead of prison.

Critics also targeted Paetongtarn’s performance during her first six months in office, citing falling agricultural prices, failure to address air pollution, controversial decisions regarding the deportation of 40 Uyghur detainees to China, delays in suppressing scammer operations, economic recovery challenges, and lack of progress on constitutional amendments. Personal allegations regarding potential tax evasion and questionable land holdings were also raised.

In response, Prime Minister Paetongtarn stated that she had clearly addressed all accusations and affirmed that all her past and present actions comply with the law. She emphasized that her activities can be verified by relevant agencies, including the Revenue Department and the Land Department.

She fired back at opposition members in several instances as well, such as pointing out that she’s not the only one accused of being dominated by her father—Natthaphong himself is allegedly dominated by Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, the founder of the Future Forward Party which has now become the People’s Party.

In another case, when Rangsiman Rome denied ever joining the anti-Thaksin People’s Alliance group, Prime Minister Paetongtarn stated that she welcomed this new information. However, she added, “Now you’ll understand how someone who has been misunderstood feels.”

After the vote, she shared a message on social media expressing gratitude to all participants.

“I appreciate every vote cast today, both for and against. Each one will motivate me and my Cabinet to work even harder in service to the people,” she wrote.

Ugandan Man Caught with 16.5kg of Cocaine in Hat Yai

SONGKHLA — Immigration officers in Songkhla province have arrested a 29-year-old Ugandan national, identified as Mr. Kazim, after discovering over 16.5 kilograms of cocaine valued at approximately 30 million baht ($890,000) in his possession. Authorities believe the drugs were being transported from Malaysia with Bangkok as the final destination.

The arrest came after an investigative team closely monitored the suspect following a tip-off. Officers had been observing the foreign national staying at a hotel in downtown Hat Yai until he emerged carrying a large suitcase with suspicious behavior. When approached by authorities, the suspect was found to have no entry stamp in his passport.

Officers invited Mr. Kazim to the Songkhla Immigration Office for further investigation. While awaiting the results, officers noticed the unusual weight of his luggage and conducted a search, revealing cocaine cleverly concealed in a backpack, shoulder bag, shirts, picture frames, and car parts. The drugs were packaged in 41 plastic bags with a total weight of approximately 16.5 kilograms.

During questioning, Mr. Kazim confessed that a fellow countryman had invited him to travel from Uganda to work in Malaysia. He was later offered US$1,000 to smuggle cocaine-filled luggage into Thailand for delivery to a recipient in Bangkok. He claimed that others would arrange his transportation route and vehicles throughout the journey.

The suspect had traveled from Malaysia’s Kelantan state into Thailand’s Narathiwat province before continuing to Hat Yai in Songkhla. He had planned to take a bus to Bangkok but was apprehended before he could complete his journey.

Authorities have charged Mr. Kazim with “importing Category 2 narcotics (cocaine) without permission” and “being a foreigner entering the Kingdom without permission.” All evidence has been seized for further legal proceedings.

Police Colonel Chinawut Tangwonglert, Superintendent of Songkhla Immigration, stated that Songkhla Immigration has received a policy directive to intensify efforts against transnational drug trafficking networks. He also requested public cooperation in reporting suspicious foreigners, illegal immigrants, or unauthorized workers to authorities immediately to help prevent crime in the area.
