BERLIN (AP) — A driver rammed a car into a crowd Monday in the southwestern German city of Mannheim, killing one person and injuring several others, police said.
A suspect was in custody, police said, later adding that “indications of a second perpetrator cannot be confirmed at this stage of the investigation.” They said there was no more danger to the public.
Police would not immediately characterize the incident as an attack. Cars have been used as deadly weapons in several acts of violence in recent months in Germany.
The driver is a 40-year-old German from the nearby state of Rhineland-Palatinate, Thomas Strobl, the state interior minister of Baden-Württemberg, where Mannheim is based, told German news agency dpa.

Police spokesperson Stefan Wilhelm said a driver drove into people on Paradeplatz, a pedestrianized street downtown, around noon, when workers come for lunch breaks. Local media reported a carnival market was taking place, meaning more visitors than usual in Mannheim, with a population of 326,000.
Mannheim University Hospital said they were treating three people from the crash, two adults and a child, dpa reported. It was not immediately clear whether other hospitals received patients.
Images from the scene showed parts of the downtown area cordoned off, with a heavy police presence. Police gathered round a badly damaged black car.

Last month, a 2-year-old girl and her mother died two days after they were injured in a car-ramming attack on a union demonstration in Munich. A 24-year-old Afghan man who came to Germany as an asylum-seeker was arrested, and prosecutors said he appeared to have an Islamic extremist motive.
Visitors enjoy tubing along the peaceful Pai River, a popular activity attracting 200-300 participants daily during the warmer months.
MAE HONG SON — Pai, a small district in Mae Hong Son, Thailand’s northernmost province, has long been known as a popular tourist destination. Both Thai and international travelers visit the city not only for sightseeing, but also like to stay for longer periods of time.
The city is charming, warm and surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty, while the locals have retained their traditional way of life. For many, Pai is a dream destination that they want to visit at least once in their lifetime.
In the last four to five years, Pai has experienced a significant tourism boom. Travelers from Thailand and various other countries come here to travel alone, vacation with their families or explore this paradise as backpackers on a budget with a sense of adventure.
Pai currently receives between 200,000 and 300,000 visitors a year. Many come for a short vacation, but a growing number, especially older travelers, opt for a longer stay due to the city’s low cost of living. Others explore business opportunities or even settle down and start families. The city attracts a variety of nationalities, including British, Israeli, German and American tourists, to name but a few.
Pai has experienced a significant tourism boom In the last four to five years.
Israelis in Pai
According to the Immigration Department, around 220,000 foreign tourists visited Pai in 2024, including around 31,000 Israelis. They come in various forms of travel, some with family, some with friends and others as solo travelers.
Most Israelis solo and small group travelers are between 20 and 30 years old and usually stay in Pai for about a week. This group usually explores different cities in Thailand, with Pai being a must-visit, where they interact with other Israelis and travelers from other countries.
Meanwhile, Israeli families often stay longer. Most of them are retirees who enjoy the peaceful, affordable lifestyle in Pai. Their presence has contributed significantly to the local economy, benefiting businesses such as hotels, restaurants, cafes, massage parlors, car rentals and souvenir stores.
Foreign tourists usually drop by about 70-80 percent in February, which happens every year.
Nature continues to be the main attraction of Pai, offering lush forests, mountains and off-road trails for adventurous travelers. Popular activities include:
Tubing on the Pai River, especially in the warmer months, with around 200-300 participants daily
Sunset-watching at Kong Lan (Thailand’s Grand Canyon), which offers breathtaking views on Thailand’s westernmost border.
Bathing in the hot springs of Tha Pai or Sai Ngam, two hidden gems of Pai
Attraction Factors
The steady influx of Israeli tourists has led to speculation about the reasons for their choice of Pai as a preferred destination. A key factor appears to be concern for safety, particularly due to ongoing conflict and fear of violence at home. Many Israeli travelers prefer to stay in groups and move mainly within their community.
Also, unlike southern Thailand, where there is a larger Muslim population, there are relatively few Muslim residents in Pai, so some Israeli visitors feel safer here. The town also has only one main street, which limits access and contributes to a sense of security.
Other factors that attract Israeli visitors are:
A wide range of activities and an affordable cost of living
The freedom to explore the country by motorcycle
A close-knit community where travelers of different nationalities live together without racial or religious differences
The presence of the Chabad House Pai,” a semi-synagogue that provides religious services and support for Jewish travelers
The growth of the Jewish community in Pai
Historical records show that Jewish families settled in Pai several years ago. Originally, only 50-80 people lived there. Today, this number has grown to 1,000-1,300 inhabitants, although the number varies depending on the visa permit.
The increase in Israeli visitors is largely due to word of mouth on social media. Many describe Pai as a peaceful, scenic town that offers a safe haven for Jewish travelers, especially those looking to escape the ongoing tensions in Israel.
Tourists enjoy sunset views at Mae Hi viewpoint in Pai, Mae Hong Son, on Feb. 21, 2025.
Economic Impact
As the Israeli community in Pai continues to grow, there are concerns about its potential impact on local employment and business opportunities. Currently, most Israelis in Pai are not engaged in long-term professional activities. Some run small food stalls or perform as musicians, but there are only seven registered Israeli work permit holders in the district.
As for Israeli-Thai marriages, local registration records show that only one Israeli-Thai couple has officially registered their marriage in Pai since 2022, compared to 35 international marriages in total, 10 of which were between British and Thai nationals.
In 2024, 1,857 Israeli citizens applied for visa extensions in Mae Hong Son, of which 1,270 were for tourism, 39 for education and 7 for business purposes. In January 2025, another 203 Israelis applied for extensions, including 10 people who were granted a one-year stay for business or marriage-related reasons.
Police meet with Jewish religious leaders at the synagogue on February 11, 2025, finding no irregularities in its religious-only use.
Official Response
Due to growing concerns, Mae Hong Son Governor Ekawit Meephian visited Pai alongside law enforcement and local officials to assess the situation. Authorities have implemented five key measures to regulate tourism:
Monitoring foreign employment regulations
Inspecting recreational businesses including cannabis stores and entertainment venues
Enforcing traffic laws for foreign visitors and addressing inappropriate behavior, particularly regarding dress codes after hot spring activities
Ensuring compliance with business and tourism regulations
Strengthening public communication to counter social media misinformation
Provincial Police Chief Pol. Maj. Gen. Songkrit Ontakrai confirmed security forces have been deployed in key areas, including Pai Walking Street, to ensure public safety. Investigations into viral reports about Israeli tourists’ misbehavior revealed much of the information was misrepresented and unnecessarily confused the public.
Governor Ekawit emphasized the commitment to preserving Pai’s positive tourism image. Despite recent concerns, Pai remains open and welcoming to all travelers.
Maintaining Tourism Appeal
Local tourism officer and former police officer “Captain Bank” provided insights into Pai’s tourism patterns, noting that visitor numbers typically decline after January as part of the seasonal cycle. While this may appear as a downturn, it offers the community time to rejuvenate before the next high season.
Pai is charming, warm and surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty.
“Foreign tourists usually drop by about 70-80 percent in February, which happens every year. From mid-May, when the first rains return, the international tourists come back to Pai. But even in the low season, Pai remains a popular destination for those looking for a quiet retreat,” he explained.
Captain Bank highlighted several advantages of visiting during the low season:
A quieter, more relaxing atmosphere
Less crowded attractions, making photography easier
More flexible accommodation options with better views at lower prices
No need for advance bookings or waiting in long lines
Improved service quality due to fewer tourists
Opportunities for authentic cultural experiences without excessive commercialization
Smoother traffic flow
Lower prices for goods and services
These factors make Pai an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful getaway even during the quieter months.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra addresses the press and answers media questions after the cabinet meeting at the Government House on March 3, 2025.
BANGKOK — Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra addressed questions about the upcoming no-confidence debate scheduled for March, which unusually targets her alone rather than multiple cabinet ministers. Speaking before her March 4-8 trip to Germany, she welcomed the opportunity to explain her position directly to the public.
“This is a good opportunity to clarify legal matters and help people understand the reality of having Thailand’s first Generation Y prime minister,” Paetongtarn stated. “This will lead to better mutual understanding.”
When questioned about opposition claims and a NIDA poll suggesting she lacks leadership qualities, the Prime Minister responded that she would let the public judge her performance. “I don’t want to point fingers at anyone. I have my own leadership style,” the 38-year-old Prime Minister explained.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra addresses the press and answers media questions after the cabinet meeting at the Government House on March 3, 2025.
“Those who criticize others should first demonstrate their own leadership capabilities,” she added. “I’m committed to presenting factual information to the public. I listen to all poll results as they reflect opinions from certain groups of citizens, and all ministries should use public feedback for improvement.”
The no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Paetongtarn includes six key issues. Beyond criticisms of her leadership and allegations of corruption, a major accusation is that she acts as a puppet prime minister, willingly allowing her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, to be the real decision-maker.
This motion has sparked strong opposition from government parties, particularly Pheu Thai Party members, who argue that the opposition has no right to debate individuals who cannot respond in parliament. However, the People’s Party claims they cannot avoid mentioning Thaksin as he is allegedly interfering with government administration.

(AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit).
On February 28, the Election Commission rejected a petition from anti-Thaksin activists requesting an investigation into whether Thaksin controls the Pheu Thai Party. The Commission found insufficient evidence that Thaksin and Pheu Thai violated laws that would warrant dissolving the party.
Thaksin is widely perceived as wielding influence in Paetongtarn’s government, from meeting with prominent politicians and business leaders to speaking at institutional and media events. He often describes himself as “S.T.R.” or “someone who meddles in everything,” but denies controlling the Prime Minister, claiming instead that she utilizes his expertise.
On February 27, Thaksin attended a meeting with the Prime Minister’s advisory team at Phitsanulok House, one of the administration’s meeting venues. Prime Minister Paetongtarn explained that her father discussed policy matters with advisors and assessed the global economic outlook under Donald Trump’s U.S. presidency.
The pearl-strapped shoes that Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra wore to meet President Xi Jinping in Beijing on February 6 became a topic of criticism on social media, sarcastically commenting on her wealth.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn leads a diverse cabinet of 35 ministers, including four fellow Generation Y members, with the remainder comprising Generation X and Baby Boomer representatives. Despite legislative tensions between the Pheu Thai and Bhumjaithai parties over constitutional reforms, the executive branch has operated without apparent internal conflicts during her first five months in office.
As Thailand’s second female prime minister and the youngest in the nation’s political history, Paetongtarn enjoys strong support among followers of her father. However, she faces significant opposition from those who oppose Thaksin’s political legacy, including critics from older generations and younger supporters of the People’s Party.
This opposition has manifested in particularly harsh social media attacks targeting her personality, clothing choices, and family. These attacks prompted former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to defend her by reminding critics that “the Prime Minister has a heart too.”

Dr. Harald Link, Group President of B.Grimm Power Public Company Limited (BGRIM), announced that 2024 financial performance continued to grow steadily. The Normalized Net Profit (NNP) attributable to the parent company reached 2,227 million baht, increasing by 5.8%, while EBITDA surged to 14,987 million baht, marking a 4.3% increase compared to the previous year. The consolidated net profit attributable to the parent company, which includes unrealized foreign exchange (FX) losses and non-recurring operation items, amounted to 1,557 million baht.
This growth was driven by several key factors, including a 10.8% increase in electricity sales to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) following the commercial operation (COD) of 3 SPP power plants in March, October, and December 2024, with a total installed capacity of 420 MW. Additionally, the decline in the average natural gas price by 14.2% and a 6.4% increase in electricity sales to industrial users (IUs) in Vietnam as well as higher revenue from project development services contributed to this strong performance. Furthermore, steam volume in Thailand grew by 19.1% compared to 2023 due to customer expansion and increased existing demand.
Throughout 2024, B.Grimm Power remained committed to expanding its renewable energy portfolio, forging partnerships with business partnership in Thailand and abroad. B.Grimm Power expanded its total renewable energy investments of 1,345 MW (Committed), including 740 MW offshore wind power projects in South Korea, 33.7 MW solar rooftop projects across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, 29.9 MW hydropower projects in the United States, 65 MW solar power plant in the Republic of the Philippines, and 476.3 MW renewable projects in Thailand (including government-awarded renewable projects). Additionally, B.Grimm Power invested in Nemaroo Bimbi Wind Farm Pty. Ltd. in Australia and LT09 S.r.I. in Republic of Italy to develop renewable energy projects and partnered with Greenergy and Sino-Thai Engineering & Construction to further expand renewable initiatives.
In Q4 2024, B.Grimm Power achieved several milestones, including awarded as renewable energy power producers and suppliers to the Thai government, according to a notification of the Energy Regulatory Commission, with a total installed capacity of 60.90 MW, with COD scheduled between 2028 and 2030. Moreover, B.Grimm Solar Power Rooftop Limited (a subsidiary) and Provincial Electricity Authority have entered into a 25-year Service Agreement for the energy management project from solar generation with an installed capacity of 10.26 MW, scheduled to COD in Q1 2026.
On the LNG front, B.Grimm LNG Limited successfully imported two LNG shipments in October and December, totaling three shipments in 2024 (approximately 198,000 tons), which were integrated into the pool gas system to supply B.Grimm’s combined-cycle power plants.
For 2025, B.Grimm Power anticipates natural gas prices for SPPs to range between 320-350 baht per million BTU, similar to 2024 levels where the actual SPP gas cost ended up being 324 baht per million BTU. B.Grimm Power plans to import up to five LNG shipments and aims to synchronize 40-50 MW of new industrial users (IUs). Several ongoing projects are expected to achieve COD between late 2025 and early 2026, with a combined installed capacity exceeding 605 MW, including the KOPOS Wind Power Project (20 MW), U-Tapao Solar Power Project (18 MW), INSEE B.Grimm Solar Power Project (80 MW) in Thailand, Zhongce Rubber Solar Rooftop Project (35 MW) in Amata City Rayong, 386 Solar Rooftop Project (27.5 MW) in UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain, Nakwol Offshore Wind Power Project (365 MW) in South Korea, and ARECO Solar Power Plant Project (65 MW) in the Republic of the Philippines.
In 2024, B.Grimm Power made significant strides in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance), receiving the highest “AAA” rating from SET ESG Ratings and ranking in S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook 2025, placing in the top 5% of the Electric Utilities industry. Additionally, B.Grimm Power received a “BBB” MSCI ESG Rating from MSCI ESG Research and an “Excellent” CGR score from the Thai Institute of Directors Association and maintained our inclusion in FTSE4Good Index for the fifth consecutive year, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable growth and good corporate governance.
B.Grimm Power also received four prestigious awards from FinanceAsia in 2024, including Best CEO Award, Most Committed to ESG, Best CFO Award, and Best Investor Relations Award. Moreover, B.Grimm Power was honored with Outstanding CFO and Outstanding IR Awards at the IAA Awards 2024, as well as the Outstanding Investor Relations Award at the SET Awards 2024, reflecting its commitment to transparency and effective investor communication.
Following the strong financial performance and positive outlook, B.Grimm Power’s Board of Directors’ meeting approved to amend the dividend payout policy to not less than 50% of normalized net profit and proposed a dividend payment to the Annual General Meeting in April 2025 at 0.43 baht per share for 2024. This dividend comprises an interim dividend of 0.18 baht per share and the final dividend of 0.25 baht per share.
B.Grimm Power remains committed to creating long-term value for shareholders while reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable energy.

Pattaya Police officers provide first aid to a 63-year-old British tourist with a head wound after being punched by a 33-year-old Thai security guard, causing him to fall backward and hit his head on the ground on March 2, 2025.
PATTAYA — Police officers are reviewing CCTV footage of an altercation between a security guard at a nightlife venue and a British tourist. The Thai man has been charged after punching the Englishman, causing him to collapse to the ground.
CCTV footage reveals that around 11:30 p.m. on March 2, at Walking Street, in the alley opposite XO Club nightlife venue in South Pattaya, Chonburi Province, a security guard named Sarawut, age 33, punched the face of Mr. C (pseudonym), a 63-year-old British tourist. Officials brought Sarawut in for questioning.
Sarawut stated that while on duty at the front of the establishment, the British man was intoxicated and attempting to enter the venue but was denied entry due to his condition. When refused entry, he became visibly upset, leading to an argument. Mr. C kicked Sarawut in the groin, causing him to retaliate by pushing back, resulting in a scuffle.
Afterward, Sarawut walked away to the alley opposite the venue, but the British tourist continued following him, attempting to attack. Sarawut responded by punching the Englishman in the face, causing him to fall backward. The footage shows his head hitting the ground, resulting in an injury.
Staff from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation provided initial first aid before transporting Mr. C to Bangkok Hospital Pattaya for treatment. Meanwhile, patrol officers took Sarawut to Pattaya City Police Station investigators to face charges of assault causing bodily harm on March 3. This charge carries a penalty of imprisonment not exceeding 2 years, a fine not exceeding 40,000 baht, or both imprisonment and fine.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Anora” creator Sean Baker won best director, best picture and two other Academy Awards at the Oscars on Sunday, bookending a dominant awards season for the American filmmaker whose stories seek to humanize sex workers and immigrants.
Baker, 53, wrote, produced, directed and edited the most dominant film of the night. The comedy-drama stars Mikey Madison as a Brooklyn exotic dancer who marries the impetuous son of a Russian oligarch. They impulsively tie the knot on a ketamine-induced Las Vegas getaway, angering his parents, who send their bumbling henchmen after the couple to force an annulment.
“Anora” swept on Sunday with five overall wins — two more than “The Brutalist.” Four of those statues went to Baker, who now ties Walt Disney for the most wins in a single year in Academy Awards history. (Unlike Disney in 1954, all Baker’s wins were for a single project. Bong Joon Ho was the previous record holder for most wins for a single film, in 2020 for “Parasite.”)

In addition to best director and best picture, Baker won for best original screenplay and best editing — a rarity as directors don’t typically cut their own films. He came into the night the favorite for the directing Oscar after earning the top prize from the Directors Guild of America, a win that historically all but guarantees an Oscars victory. He also took home the top awards at the Producers Guild and Independent Spirit Awards.
In his best director acceptance speech, he exhorted filmmakers to keep creating projects for the big screen, bemoaning the erosion of the theatergoing experience.
“In a time in which the world can feel very divided, this is more important than ever,” Baker said. “It’s a communal experience you simply don’t get at home. If we don’t reverse this trend, we’ll be losing a vital part of our culture. This is my battle cry.”
Baker told Quentin Tarantino, who presented the award, that if he hadn’t cast Madison in 2019’s “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” there would be no “Anora.” On Sunday, Madison took home the lead actress award — her first Oscar.

“Thank you so much to Sean. I adore you. This is all because of you,” Madison said onstage.
This year’s best director lineup featured five first-time nominees in the category for the first time in nearly three decades. All had writing credits on their respective films, demonstrating the academy’s growing preference for auteurs who can masterfully bring their own vision to life. For the Oscar, Baker beat out Brady Corbet of “The Brutalist,” James Mangold of “A Complete Unknown,” Jacques Audiard of “Emilia Pérez” and Coralie Fargeat of “The Substance.”
“Anora” brings Baker’s signature style of provocative comedy from indie theaters into the mainstream, blending slapstick humor with social commentary in a way that makes lessons about marginalized groups palatable to a wider audience. He made the film on a modest budget of $6 million — an amount one producer previously joked is smaller than the catering budget of some of its competitors. He said Sunday that it was the best $6 million ever spent. Last year’s best picture winner, “Oppenheimer,” had a $100 million budget.

Baker has been vocal about the difficulty of making independent films and surviving as an indie filmmaker in an industry that increasingly supports big-budget spectacles. In a rousing speech at the Independent Spirit Awards, he said indies are in danger of becoming “calling card films” — movies made only as a means to get hired for projects at major studios. Without backing for independent films, he said, some of the most creative and innovative projects might never be made.
He said he hopes the success of “Anora” will increase support for indie projects.
Baker has long been passionate about using his craft to help destigmatize sex work. His 2012 film “Starlet” follows a budding friendship between an adult film star and a crotchety widow who sells her a thermos full of cash at a yard sale. Baker said the connections he formed with sex workers involved in the project inspired him to feature them in several other films.
He received widespread praise for “Tangerine” (2015), in which he used three iPhone 5S smartphones to tell a story about transgender sex workers in Los Angeles. In “The Florida Project” (2017), a single mother living in an Orlando motel turns to sex work to provide for her daughter. And “Red Rocket” (2021) follows a retired porn actor’s journey back to his small Texas hometown.
Baker and Madison weren’t the only ones to pick up Oscars for “Anora” — producers Alex Coco and Samantha Quan, Baker’s wife, also received statues for the best picture win.

Mikey Madison wins best actress Oscar for ‘Anora’
Mikey Madison won the best actress Oscar on Sunday for “Anora,” a role that catapulted the 25-year-old into a film career after achieving initial success on television.
Her victory was part of a huge night for the Brooklyn-set comedy-drama, which won five Oscars, including best picture and directing honors for Sean Baker.
“Wow, this is very surreal,” Madison said, having hugged Baker and others before taking the stage.
“Forgive me, I’m nervous,” she said before reading off a list of names from a piece of paper.
Madison had been best known for playing a sullen teenager in the FX comedy series “Better Things,” which ended in 2022. She also appeared in the hit movies “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” and the fifth installment of the horror franchise “Scream.”

‘No Other Land’ wins Oscar for best documentary
“No Other Land,” the story of Palestinian activists fighting to protect their communities from demolition by the Israeli military, won the Oscar for best documentary on Sunday.
The collaboration between Israeli and Palestinian filmmakers follows activist Basel Adra as he risks arrest to document the destruction of his hometown, which Israeli soldiers are tearing down to use as a military training zone, at the southern edge of the West Bank. Adra’s pleas fall on deaf ears until he befriends a Jewish Israeli journalist who helps him amplify his story.
“About two months ago, I became a father, and my hope to my daughter that she will not have to live the same life I’m living now, always fearing settlers, violence, home demolitions and forcible displacements,” said Adra as he received his award Sunday night.

“Flow” was made with Blender, a free, open-source graphics software tool using computer generated animation. The result is a dreamy aesthetic paired with a peaceful, yet post-apocalyptic, fable about a black cat, dog, capybara, ring-tailed lemur and secretary bird trying to survive a catastrophic flood. The film has no dialogue and forces viewers to be mesmerized by the unlikely relationship and understanding between the species trying to escape the rising waters.

James Bond gets a musical tribute from global pop superstars
The Oscars launched into a four-part tribute to James Bond, opening with “The Substance” actor Margaret Qualley and dancers, followed by Blackpink’s LISA serenade of “Live and Let Die,” Doja Cat with “Diamonds Are Forever” and RAYE with “Skyfall.”
The tribute comes on the heels of a shakeup that stirred the film industry: The longtime custodians of the James Bond movies handed over creative control to Amazon MGM in late February. Amazon bought MGM Studios in 2022 for $6.1 billion, a purchase that was significantly motivated by the acquisition of one of the movies’ most beloved and long-running franchises.
