BANGKOK — In a major gambling crackdown, Bangkok Metropolitan Police raided an illegal poker operation in the Ramkhamhaeng area on Tuesday night, arresting 52 individuals from 10 different countries.

While poker is considered merely a game in many countries worldwide, it remains classified as illegal gambling in Thailand, subject to periodic law enforcement operations. The latest raid occurred on March 4 when police, acting on a tip from an informant, targeted a warehouse in Soi Pho Kaew 3, intersection 19, Khlong Chan subdistrict, Bang Kapi district, Bangkok.

Officers conducted surveillance around 9 PM, discovering dozens of people engaged in poker games. After confirming real money was being wagered, police identified themselves and arrested all 52 participants, including both Thai nationals and foreigners. The international players represented 10 different countries: Vietnam, Israel, Belarus, Pakistan, Denmark, India, China, Singapore, Iceland, and Russia.

Authorities seized substantial evidence including three poker tables, 66 decks of cards, two laptops, a cash counting machine, a timing clock, two chip storage boxes, and poker chips of various colors (red, black, yellow, blue, green, brown, and pink). Police also confiscated 320 high-value chips worth 100,000 baht each (totaling 32 million baht), along with 315,050 Thai baht in cash, 1,900 US dollars, and a 100 yuan Chinese banknote. The total value of seized items amounted to approximately 51,411,100 baht (about 1,522,840 US dollars).

During questioning, all suspects admitted to participating in illegal poker gambling for real money. Foreign nationals revealed they had learned about the underground venue through Thai players they had met in international tournaments, who then invited them to play at this location.

Police transported all suspects to Lat Phrao Police Station for processing. Fifty-one players face charges of participating in illegal gambling, while the venue manager, identified as Sittisak, faces additional charges of organizing illegal gambling activities.

Trump Promises to Keep Up ‘Swift and Unrelenting Action’ in Speech to Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump vowed Tuesday to keep up his campaign of “swift and unrelenting action” in reorienting the nation’s economy, immigration and foreign policy in an unyielding address to Congress and the nation that left Democratic legislators to register their dissent with stone faces, placards calling out “lies,” and one legislator’s ejection.

Trump’s prime-time speech was the latest marker in his takeover of the nation’s capital, where the Republican-led House and Senate have done little to restrain the president as he and his allies work to slash the size of the federal government and remake America’s place in the world.

The more than 90-minute address added up to an defiant sales pitch for the policies that he promised during his campaign and leaned into during his first weeks back in office. Trump pledged to keep delivering sweeping changes to the country, rescuing it from what he described as destruction and mistakes left by his predecessor while repeatedly needling Democratic lawmakers who protested his remarks.

Emboldened after overcoming impeachments in his first term and criminal prosecutions in between his two administrations and with a tight grip on the Republican-controlled Congress, Trump has embarked on a mission to dismantle parts of the federal government, remake the relationship with America’s allies and spark a North American trade war that is compounding economic uncertainty.

“It has been nothing but swift and unrelenting action,” Trump said of his opening weeks in office. “The people elected me to do the job, and I am doing it.”

Trump, who has billionaire adviser Elon Musk orchestrating his efforts to slash the size and scope of the federal government, said he is working to “reclaim democracy from this unaccountable bureaucracy” and threatened federal workers anew with firings if they resist his agenda.

Musk, who was seated in the House gallery, received a pair of standing ovations from Republicans in the chamber, as Trump exaggerated and shared false claims about alleged government abuse uncovered by the Tesla and SpaceX founder and his team of disrupters.

Trump repeated false claims that tens of millions of dead people over 100 years old are receiving Social Security payments, prompting some Democrats to shout, “Not true!” and “Those are lies!”

Trump spoke at a critical juncture in his presidency, as voters who returned him to the White House on his promise to fix inflation are instead finding economic chaos. All the gains the S&P 500 have made since Election Day are now gone, while consumer sentiment surveys show the public sees inflation as worsening. For a president who believes that announcements of corporate investments can boost attitudes about the economy, the speech was suddenly a test of his ability to rebuild confidence in his economic leadership.

Trump seemed prepared to double down on his trade war, which experts have warned will raise prices for consumers.

“Whatever they tariff us, we tariff them. Whatever they tax us, we tax them,” Trump said. He sought to ease concerns about price increases, saying, “There’ll be a little disturbance, but we’re okay with that. It won’t be much.”

Trump said one of his “very highest priorities” was to rescue the economy and offer relief to working families. He promised to organize the federal government to lower costs on eggs and energy, blaming his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden for the situation and offering scant details of his own plans.

Trump also called for the extension of his first-term tax cuts and additional federal funding for his border crackdown, including for his promised efforts at “mass deportation” of people in the U.S. illegally.

Speaking about his promised tax cuts, Trump seemed to goad Democrats, saying: “I’m sure you’re going to vote for those tax cuts. Because otherwise I don’t believe the people will ever vote you into office.”

The backdrop was the new economic uncertainty unleashed after the president opened the day by placing stiff tariffs on imports from the country’s neighbors and closest trading partners. A 25% tax on goods from Canada and Mexico went into effect early Tuesday — ostensibly to secure greater cooperation to tackle fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration — triggering immediate retaliation and sparking fears of a wider trade war. Trump also raised tariffs on goods from China to 20%.

Trump also celebrated his sharp crackdown on migration to the U.S., fulfilling a key campaign promise and taunting Democrats for not doing more to secure the border, saying, “It turns all we really needed was a new president.”

Republicans were boisterous as Trump stepped to the lectern in the House, chanting “USA! USA!” as the president basked in the cheers. The GOP lawmakers were jubilant, having won a trifecta of the White House, Senate and House in the elections. However, they face a high-stakes task of delivering on Trump’s agenda as well as avoiding a government shutdown later this month.

Across the aisle, out-of-power Democrats set the tone early, with most remaining seated without applauding or making eye contact with Trump as he was introduced in the chamber.

After several interruptions, House Speaker Mike Johnson jumped in and called for decorum to be restored in the chamber as Republicans shouted “USA” to drown out the cries from the other side of the aisle. Johnson then ordered Texas Rep. Al Green removed from the chamber.

“It’s worth it to let people know that there are some people who are going to stand up” to Trump, Green told reporters after being thrown out of the chamber.

Other Democrats held up signs criticizing like “Save Medicaid” and “Protect Veterans” during Trump’s remarks, seeking to drive public awareness to elements of Trump’s agenda they believed might offer them a pathway back to the majority.

Some Democrats chose to highlight the impact of Trump’s actions by inviting fired federal workers as guests, including a disabled veteran from Arizona, a health worker from Maryland and a forestry employee who worked on wildfire prevention in California. They also invited guests who would be harmed by steep federal budget cuts to Medicaid and other programs.

Trump also used his speech to address his proposals for fostering peace in Ukraine and the Middle East, where he has unceremoniously upended the policies of the Biden administration in a matter of just weeks. On Monday, Trump ordered a freeze to U.S. military assistance to Ukraine, ending years of staunch American support for the country in fending off Russia’s invasion.

Many Democratic lawmakers wore blue and yellow ties and scarves in a show of support for Ukraine.

Trump also said he had ended a “weaponized government” that he accused Democrats of wielding against him, referring to his legal troubles over the years, claiming they were political persecution.

The president also used his high-profile moment to press his efforts to reshape the country’s approach to social issues, as he looked to continue to eradicate diversity, equity and inclusion efforts across the country and to roll back some public accommodations for transgender individuals.

Trump said he ended the “tyranny” of diversity, equity and inclusion policies that he rolled back for the federal government and military, along with pushing similar moves in the private sector. “Our country will be woke no longer,” he declared.

Watching from the gallery with first lady Melania Trump were guests including 15-year-old Elliston Berry, of Aledo, Texas, who was the victim of an explicit deepfake image sent to classmates.

Other White House guests included Stephanie Diller, the widow of New York Police Department Officer Jonathan Diller, who was killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop in March 2024; Marc Fogel, the Pennsylvania teacher who came home last month after years of detention in Russia, and his 95-year-old mother, Malphine; and relatives of Corey Comperatore, the former Pennsylvania fire chief who was killed as he protected his family during an assassination attempt on Trump last summer.

Thai PBS Removes Controversial Article Praising the Dictatorship

Thai PBS
A side-by-side image of Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat and General Prayut Chan-o-cha accompanying the article 'Dictatorship Builds the Nation, People Nostalgia for Strong Leadership-Economic Prosperity' published by Thai PBS.

BANGKOK — Thai PBS, Thailand’s public broadcaster, has removed a controversial article that presented a one-sided view and appeared to glorify dictatorial leaders without mentioning the severe negative impacts that continue to affect Thai politics today.

On March 4, Parinya Tewanarumitkul, a professor at Thammasat University’s Faculty of Law, posted a critique of an article titled “Dictatorship Builds the Nation, People ‘Nostalgia’ for Strong Leadership-Economic Prosperity” published by Thai PBS.

The Criticism

Professor Parinya criticized the headline, content, and conclusion which implied that countries under dictatorial or authoritarian regimes experience higher economic development. The article failed to mention the negative aspects or examine contextual facts, such as how during Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat’s era, the economy flourished primarily because the United States provided full support out of fear Thailand would fall to communism, and also because Puey Ungphakorn served as the central bank governor.

Additionally, using a photo of General Prayut Chan-o-cha alongside Field Marshal Sarit suggested he was another nation-building dictator. Besides the economic data being inconclusive, the reality is that General Prayut’s era has created ongoing problems for Thai politics, with the 2017 Constitution designed to resist amendment.

Parinya Tewanarumitkul
Parinya Tewanarumitkul

Professor Parinya found particularly problematic the article’s claim that the latest coup against Yingluck Shinawatra’s government, entering the mode of “perfect elections” and “returning to democratic government once again.”

He questioned whether the writer was unaware of how problematic the electoral system, the elections, and the Election Commission remain, noting that General Prayut became Prime Minister after the 2019 election only because of senators he himself appointed, and Srettha Thavisin’s administration also relied on votes from the same group of senators.

“I don’t want Thai PBS, which is the public television established in the democratic era, to publish articles that appear to support dictatorial regimes based on one-sided information. As a well-wisher, I must point this out because I disagree with creating an atmosphere of nostalgia for dictatorship, which would pave the way and legitimize the next coup that should be eliminated from Thailand once and for all,” Professor Parinya concluded.

Thai PBS’s Response

Following this criticism, the article that had been shared on Thai PBS social media was removed. Subsequently, Thai PBS News Online issued a statement saying: “Clarification regarding the article ‘Dictatorship Builds the Nation, People ‘Nostalgia for Strong Leadership-Economic Prosperity’ which was published on February 28 (content last updated on March 4, 2025) on the website and Thai PBS News social media channels.

thai PBS
Thai PBS News Online’s statement on March 4, 2025 about the controversial article that has been removed from its platforms.

Thai PBS Online News would like to thank everyone for their feedback and humbly accepts the criticism to review the mistakes that occurred and improve the presentation of beneficial information in the future.

Upon consideration that the article presentation was not sufficiently comprehensive and may have created misunderstandings, leading to debates and becoming a political tool unintentionally by Thai PBS, we have decided to remove the article from all Thai PBS News platforms. We will conduct a transparent investigation into this matter and provide further updates.”

About Thai PBS

Thai PBS, previously operating under the names iTV, TITV, and TV Thai, is Thailand’s public television broadcaster. Founded as iTV in 2008, it was established to provide citizens with an independent public service broadcaster comparable to the UK’s BBC or Japan’s NHK—free from government control and commercial pressures.

Unlike its international counterparts, Thai PBS couldn’t adopt similar revenue models and instead relies on a 1.5% “sin tax” on alcohol and tobacco products, generating approximately 2 billion baht annually. This funding structure allows Thai PBS to offer free programming without subscription fees.

The network is managed by the Public Broadcasting Organization of Thailand (PBSO), which operates as an independent state agency rather than a government department or state enterprise.

As traditional media faces disruption from online platforms, Thai PBS has attempted to adapt to digital environments. However, the organization has faced scrutiny regarding its management effectiveness, budget utilization, and alleged bias in news coverage—criticisms that culminated in the recent controversy over its publication of a one-sided article.

The Head of Myanmar’s Military Government Talks with Putin to Cement Cooperation

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin was holding talks on Tuesday with the head of Myanmar’s military government, who is seeking to cement cooperation with Moscow as he faces isolation and sanctions from the West.

Gen. Min Aung Hlaing is making his fourth trip to Russia since his army seized power in February 2021 from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Western nations have ostracized Myanmar’s ruling military and imposed economic and political sanctions in response to the takeover and the violent repression of opposition, which has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians and given rise to an armed conflict widely seen as a civil war.

Welcoming Min Aung Hlaing at the start of the Kremlin talks, Putin noted growing bilateral trade and close cooperation on the international arena, and thanked him for sending six baby elephants to Moscow.

Russia, along with China, is a major supporter and arms supplier to Myanmar. Russian-made fighter jets are used in attacks on territory under the control of ethnic minority groups, many of which are allies with pro-democracy resistance forces.

Russia defends Myanmar’s military government in international forums, and the ruling generals generally support Moscow’s foreign policy agenda. The two countries have also held joint military drills and signed a pact on developing nuclear power.

Ming Aung Hlaing thanked Putin for the assistance and emphasized his military government’s support for Russia’s military action in Ukraine.

“Russia is a key backer of the Myanmar military,” said Morgan Michaels, a Singapore-based analyst with the International Institute of Strategic Studies. “In addition to diplomatic and symbolic support, it plays a vital role in enhancing and sustaining the regime’s warfighting capacity.”

Nay Phone Latt, a spokesperson for Myanmar’s main opposition National Unity Government, said the military leader is in desperate need of international recognition and willing to trade the country’s resources in exchange.

“So, to maintain his power, he will go to countries that will recognize him and provide him with some kind of assistance, and exchange what he wants with the country,” Nay Phone Latt said Monday in a text message to the AP.

CPF to Fight Black Chin Tilapia Case; Farmers Relieved as Court Accepts Class Action

Blackchin

BANGKOK — The Bangkok South Civil Court issued an order on March 4, 2025, permitting a class action lawsuit filed by a group of farmers over black chin tilapia against Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF). In response, CPF released a statement emphasizing that this order merely authorizes the case to proceed as a class action and does not imply guilt.

The farmers alleged that the company’s business operations adversely affected the ecosystem and their livelihoods. The court noted that the case involves many plaintiffs who share similar or nearly identical legal and factual issues. Allowing a class action format will help reduce the burden on both the court and individual plaintiffs who might lack the resources to pursue the case on their own. Thus, the court permitted the lawsuit to move forward as a class action.

Blackchin

CPF stated, “It is important to emphasize that this order does not mean CPF is deemed at fault based on the allegations. Instead, it simply paves the way for a more efficient judicial process. The determination of the company’s guilt or liability will be made after thorough examination of the evidence in court.”

It is confirmed that CPF will appeal the decision as needed, contesting the case with scientific evidence and empirical data in accordance with due legal process.

Acting Sub Lt. Somchai Amin, Chairman of the Environmental Cases and Operations Subcommittee of the Lawyers Council, stated that the conditions for this class action lawsuit limit the areas eligible for damage claims. Affected parties must be from Mueang District, Bang Khonthi District, and Praek Nam Daeng District in Samut Songkhram Province only. Moving forward, they must wait for the parties to submit an appeal request within 7 days before scheduling another meeting with all parties involved.

Mr. Panya Tokthong, a representative of the affected parties, expressed great relief after the court’s decision to accept this case as a class action lawsuit. He mentioned that they have been impacted by this issue for a long time, and the villagers strongly hope that justice will be served in the future. They also hope that those involved will not allow this matter to quietly disappear.

Guard Apologizes for British Tourist Punch; Security Training Planned

Sarawut, 32, a security guard from XO Club, performs a wai gesture to apologize for the incident where he punched a British tourist at the Bang Lamung District Office on March 4, 2025.

PATTAYA — A security guard from XO Club, a nightlife venue in Pattaya, has publicly apologized after punching a 63-year-old British tourist identified as Mr. C with a single blow that knocked him to the ground on Walking Street. The incident has prompted tourism police to schedule additional training sessions for security personnel ahead of the upcoming Songkran festival.

Sarawut, 32, accompanied by XO Club manager Wilasinee Siriphoomchai, 45, met with tourism police officials on March 4 at the Bang Lamung District Office. They were joined by Bang Lamung District Chief Patcharaphat Srithanyanan and Deputy District Chief Nathaphop Yomjinda, to explain the March 2 incident. The club representatives provided CCTV footage showing events leading up to the altercation.

Guard Explains His Actions

During the meeting, Sarawut apologized to the public, officials, and Mr. C for the incident that damaged tourism’s image. He explained that before the incident, the tourist was heavily intoxicated, and when he attempted to prevent the man from entering the establishment, the British man allegedly kicked him in the groin.

Sarawut admitted he lost his temper and could not control his emotions. He acknowledged his wrongdoing and reported that he had already met with investigators at Pattaya City Police Station, where the British tourist declined to press charges, with both parties having apologized to each other.

Club Takes Disciplinary Action

Club manager Wilasinee added that while she acknowledges the damaging nature of the employee’s actions, she wanted to provide context that the guard is typically even-tempered but reacted after being provoked by the tourist. The club has temporarily suspended Sarawut and plans to hold a meeting to issue stricter guidelines for all staff members.

Officials Respond with Training Initiative

Bang Lamung Deputy District Chief Nathaphop Yomjinda stated that the district office will invite all relevant agencies and business operators to a meeting to discuss preventive measures and enhanced penalties for such incidents.

Police Lieutenant Colonel Supharat Meeprecha, a tourism police investigator, said that the Tourist Police Bureau, under the command of Police Lieutenant General Saksira Phueak-am, has emphasized training security personnel who work at Walking Street and other venues frequented by tourists.

He stated that Pattaya tourism police have already conducted three training sessions for security guards in Pattaya, with 409 guards completing the program. Since the training began, there have been no violent incidents involving trained security personnel and tourists.

“Following this incident, Pattaya tourism police will organize a fourth security training program before the Songkran festival 2025 to prepare security personnel for safely managing tourists visiting Pattaya,” he added.

Thailand Keeps Buddhist Holiday Alcohol Ban, Adds Tourism Exemptions

Beer People: A group of people advocating for laws to protect craft beer producers and community distilleries, who previously opposed the law prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages during specified hours and banning online sales during the military government in 2020.

BANGKOK — In a decision balancing religious traditions with tourism needs, Thailand will continue to prohibit alcohol sales on five major Buddhist holidays while introducing exemptions for key tourist locations, Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Chantraruangthong announced today.

Following a meeting of the National Alcoholic Beverage Policy Committee on March 4, Prasert confirmed that alcohol sales will remain banned on Makha Bucha (February 12), Visakha Bucha (May 11), Asalha Bucha (July 10), the start of Buddhist Lent (July 11), and the end of Buddhist Lent (October 7).

However, the committee approved exemptions for several venues to accommodate international visitors during Thailand’s “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025” campaign. Alcohol sales will be permitted at:

  • International airport passenger terminals
  • Entertainment venues operating under entertainment venue laws
  • Businesses similar to entertainment venues located in tourist areas
  • Hotels operating under hotel laws
  • Special national or international event venues with large gatherings, as designated by the Public Health Minister based on recommendations from the Tourism and Sports Minister

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra presides over the opening ceremony for the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025 at One Bangkok shopping center on February 3, 2025.

The committee is also establishing a special panel to study the potential impacts of allowing electronic alcohol sales, which will examine the appropriateness and effectiveness of possible regulations.

Regarding the current daily alcohol sales prohibition between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m., Prasert explained that this restriction remains unchanged due to legal complications. Any changes would conflict with existing Revolutionary Council announcements governing alcohol sales timing.

The committee’s recommendations will now undergo a 15-day public consultation period via a government website before being submitted to the Public Health Minister and then to the Prime Minister for final approval and publication in the Royal Gazette. Officials expect the new measures to be implemented before Visakha Bucha Day on May 11.

This makes it a great place to stroll at any time of day, but especially after the sun sets where the street turns into a vibrant night market. Just 3km from Fisherman’s Village, W Koh Samui lets visitors unwind in luxury and style.
