At Least 66 Dead and 51 Injured in a Hotel Fire at a Ski Resort in Turkey

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — A fire at a 12-story hotel at a popular ski resort in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday killed at least 66 people, Turkey’s Interior Minister said.

Ali Yerlikaya said at least 51 other people were injured in the disaster that struck the Grand Kartal hotel in the resort of Kartalkaya, in Bolu province’s Koroglu mountains, some 300 kilometers (185 miles) east of Istanbul. The fire occurred during the schools’ semester break, when hotels in the region are packed.

“We are in deep pain. We have unfortunately lost 66 lives in the fire that broke out at this hotel,” Yerlikaya told reporters after inspecting the site.

Health Minister Kemal Memisoglu said at least one of the injured was in serious condition, while 17 other people had been discharged after being treated.

The hotel had 238 registered guests, Yerlikaya said. The fire was reported at 3:27 a.m. and the fire department began to respond at 4:15 a.m., he told reporters.

The government appointed six prosecutors to lead an investigation into the blaze, which is believed to have started in the hotel’s restaurant section.

At least two of the victims died after jumping from the building in a panic, Gov. Abdulaziz Aydin told the state-run Anadolu Agency earlier. Private NTV television and other media reported that some people tried to climb down from their rooms using sheets and blankets.

Necmi Kepcetutan, a ski instructor at the hotel, said he was asleep when the fire erupted and he rushed out of the building. He told NTV television that he then helped some 20 guests out of the hotel.

The hotel was engulfed in smoke, making it difficult for guests to locate the fire escape, he said.

“I cannot reach some of my students. I hope they are OK,” the ski instructor told the station.

Television images showed the roof and top floors of the hotel on fire.

Witnesses and reports suggested that the hotel’s fire detection system failed to operate.

“My wife smelled the burning. The alarm did not go off,” Atakan Yelkovan, a guest staying on the third floor, told the IHA news agency.

“We tried to go upstairs but couldn’t, there were flames. We went downstairs and came here (outside),” he said.

Yelkovan said it took about an hour for the firefighting teams to arrive.

“People on the upper floors were screaming. They hung down sheets … Some tried to jump,” he said.

NTV television suggested that the wooden cladding on the exterior of the hotel, in a chalet-style design, may have accelerated the spread of the fire.

Part of the 161-room hotel is on the side of a cliff, hampering efforts to combat the flames.

“Because the rear side is on a slope, intervention could only be made from the front and sides,” Yerlikaya confirmed.

Tourism Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy told reporters that the hotel underwent inspections in 2021 and 2024 and that “no negative situation regarding fire competence” was reported by the fire department.

In an address in Ankara, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “Unfortunately, we received very sad news this morning from Bolu, Kartalkaya. Our brothers and sisters were killed and injured in a fire that broke out in a hotel.”

“All necessary steps will be taken to shed light on all aspects of the incident and to hold those responsible accountable,” he added.

NTV showed a smoke-blackened lobby, its glass entrance and windows smashed, its wooden reception desk charred and a chandelier crashed to the ground.

Aydin’s office said 30 fire trucks and 28 ambulances were sent to the site.

Other hotels at the resort were evacuated as a precaution and guests were placed in hotels around Bolu.

Meanwhile, a gas explosion at a hotel at another ski resort in central Turkey injured four people.

The explosion took place at the Yildiz Mountain Winter Sports Center in Sivas province. Two skiers and their instructor were slightly injured while another instructor received second-degree burns to the hands and face, the Sivas governor’s office said.

French Man Arrested for Posting Explicit Content with Thai Women

A French student, 26, was arrested at his luxury Chatuchak condominium in Bangkok, where police discovered electronic devices and adult toys during the January 20, 2025 raid.

BANGKOKA 26-year-old French student was arrested in Bangkok for posting explicit content and videos of intimate encounters with Thai women on social media platforms, police announced on January 20.

The Immigration Bureau’s Investigation Division, led by Police Colonel Jirapong Rujidarongchai, acted on intelligence reports about a foreign national who had been sharing explicit materials and using social media to solicit sexual encounters while boasting about his physical attributes.

Following an investigation and gathering of evidence, authorities obtained a search warrant from the Northern Bangkok Criminal Court. Officers raided a luxury condominium in the Chatuchak area, where they found the suspect, identified only as Mr. K, a French national studying at a prominent university in Thailand. The search also yielded various electronic devices and adult toys.

When presented with evidence including video clips, Mr. K admitted to being the person in the materials. He claimed the actions were done out of youthful indiscretion and stated that while multiple women had been involved, he had ceased such activities over a year ago.

Police Lieutenant General Chairit Anurit, commander of Immigration Division 3, stated that despite the suspect’s claims of having stopped his activities, the offense had already been committed. The suspect faces charges under computer crime laws for importing and distributing obscene computer data accessible to the public, as well as charges related to the production and distribution of obscene materials.

“This case represents a serious threat to public order and morality, damaging Thailand’s reputation,” said Police Lieutenant General Chairit. He emphasized that digital footprints cannot be erased, and ignorance of the law cannot be used as an excuse.

The commander added that this case represents a “silent threat” to society, as Mr. K admitted to having intimate encounters with multiple women, some of whom were unaware they were being filmed. It is believed none knew the content was being shared across social networks. Potential victims are encouraged to contact the Immigration Bureau’s Investigation Division for legal assistance.

Trump Wants to Pull the US Out of the WHO Again. Here’s What May Happen Next

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump used one of the flurry of executive actions that he issued on his first day back in the White House to begin the process of withdrawing the U.S. from the World Health Organization for the second time in less than five years — a move many scientists fear could roll back decades-long gains made in fighting infectious diseases like AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

Experts have also cautioned that withdrawing from the organization could weaken the world’s defenses against dangerous new outbreaks capable of triggering pandemics.

Here’s a look at what Trump’s decision means:

What happened?

During the first Oval Office appearance of his second term, Trump signed an executive order detailing how the withdrawal process might begin.

“Ooh,” Trump exclaimed as he was handed the action to sign. “That’s a big one!”

His move calls for pausing the future transfer of U.S. government funds to the organization, recalling and reassigning federal personnel and contractors working with the WHO and calls on officials to “identify credible and transparent United States and international partners to assume necessary activities previously undertaken by” the organization.

This isn’t the first time Trump has tried to sever ties with WHO. In July 2020, several months after WHO declared COVID-19 to be a pandemic and as cases surged globally, Trump’s administration officially notified U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that the U.S. was planning to pull out of WHO, suspending funding to the agency.

President Joe Biden reversed Trump’s decision on his first day in office in January 2021 — only to have Trump essentially revive it on his first day back at the White House.

Dr. Tom Frieden, president and CEO of the advocacy group Resolve to Save Lives, said Trump’s move “makes Americans — and the world — less safe.”

“Withdrawing from WHO not only cuts crucial funding from the agency, but it also surrenders our role as a global health leader and silences America’s voice in critical decisions affecting global health security,” Frieden said in a statement. “Real reform requires engagement, not abandonment. We cannot make WHO more effective by walking away from it. This decision weakens America’s influence and increases the risk of a deadly pandemic.”

What is WHO and does this really matter?

It is the U.N.’s specialized health agency and is mandated to coordinate the world’s response to global health threats, including outbreaks of mpoxEbola and polio. It also provides technical assistance to poorer countries, helps distribute scarce vaccines, supplies and treatments and sets guidelines for hundreds of health conditions, including mental health and cancer.

“A U.S. withdrawal from WHO would make the world far less healthy and safe,” said Lawrence Gostin, director of the WHO Collaborating Center on Global Health Law at Georgetown University. He said in an email that losing American resources would devastate WHO’s global surveillance and epidemic response efforts.

“It would make it more likely that we could see novel diseases spinning out of control, crossing borders, and potentially sparking a pandemic,” he said.

Can Trump really withdraw the US from WHO?

Yes, as long as he gets the approval of Congress and the U.S. meets its financial obligations to WHO for the current fiscal year. The U.S. joined WHO via a 1948 joint resolution passed by both chambers of Congress, which has subsequently been supported by all administrations. The resolution requires the U.S. to provide a one-year notice period should it decide to leave WHO.

S 24060327
Members of a World Health Organization team leave their hotel for the airport at the end of their mission to investigate the origins of the coronavirus pandemic in Wuhan, China, on Feb. 10, 2021. (Kyodo)

What does this mean for WHO?

It’s extremely bad. The U.S. has historically been among WHO’s biggest donors, providing the U.N. health agency not only with hundreds of millions of dollars, but also hundreds of staffers with specialized public health expertise.

In the last decade, the U.S. has given WHO about $160 million to $815 million every year. WHO’s yearly budget is about $2 billion to $3 billion. Losing U.S. funding could cripple numerous global health initiatives, including the effort to eradicate polio, maternal and child health programs, and research to identify new viral threats.

Numerous American agencies that work with WHO would also suffer, including the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health. Leaving WHO would exclude the U.S. from WHO-coordinated initiatives, like determining the yearly composition of flu vaccines and missions to countries battling dangerous epidemics. American scientists would also lose quick access to critical genetic databases run by WHO, which could stall attempts to produce vaccines and medicines.

Why is Trump withdrawing the US from WHO?

At a September campaign rally, Trump said he would “take on the corruption” at WHO and other public health institutions that he said were “dominated” by corporate power and China. Trump has also said that the U.S. contributed far more to WHO than China did and complained that China “totally controls” the U.N. health agency. “And now, they want to give control over our whole country to them, which would be a terrible mistake,” he said.

WHO typically issues advice to its member countries about how to handle health crises, but the agency has no authority to compel countries to act.

In 2020, Trump alleged WHO was “colluding” with China to hide the extent of the coronavirus’ spread in the early days of the pandemic. An AP investigation in June 2020 found that China withheld crucial details about the virus shortly after it emerged, frustrating WHO’s efforts to assess its potential for danger and stop its spread.

What has WHO said?

“We really believe in cooperation … and from our side, we are ready to work together,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a December news conference. Tedros said the relationship between WHO and the U.S. “has actually been a good model of partnership,” saying he believed American leaders understand the U.S. cannot be safe from health threats unless the entire world is safe.

He noted that when Ebola struck a war-torn part of Congo in 2018, no American first responders were involved. “It was WHO and partners who help(ed) the (Congolese) government … to contain that outbreak.”

SAMUT SONGKHRAM — The Agricultural Research Development Agency (ARDA) has unveiled groundbreaking research in blood cockle breeding at Woradet Farm in Samut Songkhram province, marking a significant advancement in sustainable Thai agriculture and food production.

On January 21, Woradet Farm in Klong Khone sub-district welcomed ARDA consultant Anan Suwanarat and blood cockle breeding expert Thanet Pumthong, along with other officials. The farm’s owner, Woradet Khieocharoen, and Rasri Rungmanee, a representative from the Samut Songkhram Agricultural Council, hosted the delegation for a comprehensive tour of their breeding facilities.

The visit highlighted three key areas of operation: broodstock management, juvenile cultivation, and plankton production for feed development. This research initiative comes at a crucial time, as Thailand’s blood cockle production has seen a dramatic decline over the past two decades – from a peak of 82,000 tons annually to approximately 32,600 tons in 2022, according to Department of Fisheries statistics.

“Food security is a top priority for the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, especially given global climate change challenges,” said the ARDA consultant. “This initiative not only addresses food safety and public health concerns but also aims to sustainably preserve our environment while improving grassroots farmers’ income.”

The research project, focusing on breeding and nurturing Tegillorca granosa (Linnaeus, 1758), employs advanced aquaculture technology to ensure sustainable marine resources.

The team has successfully developed artificial breeding techniques using local broodstock from Klong Khone. Their achievements include cultivating over 100,000 juvenile cockles exceeding 1 millimeter in size, which will continue to be nurtured.

This innovative approach aims to reduce dependency on wild harvesting while increasing survival rates of juvenile cockles. The project also minimizes risks associated with non-native species and diseases, contributing to the natural restoration of blood cockle populations. The initiative represents a significant step toward enhancing Thailand’s competitiveness in the global seafood market while maintaining sustainable development goals.

The research collaboration between ARDA, Kasetsart University, and the Department of Fisheries demonstrates Thailand’s commitment to combining technological innovation with traditional farming practices to address both environmental concerns and food security challenges.

Thailand Gears Up for a Celebration as a Long-Awaited Marriage Equality Law Takes Effect

By JINTAMAS SAKSORNCHAI, BANGKOK — They have been in a committed relationship for more than 13 years, and even had a wedding in 2019. Since then, Danaya Phonphayung and Sunma Piamboon, both women, have considered themselves a married couple, even if same-sex marriages were not legally recognized.

The walls of their home in suburban Bangkok are decorated with faded photos from their happy union, filled with joy and love from their families and friends. Come this Thursday, their wedded status will be recognized by the nation as well, when a law that allows members of the LGBTQ+ community in Thailand to get married and have the same legal rights as heterosexual couples takes effect.

The couple said they can’t wait to formalize their union. They plan to register their marriage at a district office near their home on the very first day that the law allows.

“I think I’ll cry,” Danaya, an office worker, said with a big smile, thinking about the moment that they will sign the paper. “I’m so happy. It’s something that was more than I could’ve dreamed of, that suddenly this day is happening.”

“We live together. We bought a house. We bought a car. But we cannot share these things together like a married couple. When this is happening, we feel that it’s our rights that we need to secure as quickly as possible,” she said.

The marriage equality bill, which sailed through both the House of Representatives and the Senate, amended the Civil and Commercial Code to change the words “men and women” and “husband and wife” to “individuals” and “marriage partners.” It would open up access to full legal, financial and medical rights for LGBTQ+ couples.

Sunma, who owns a travel agency, said that she had realized how crucial being legally married was when Danaya was hospitalized with dengue fever, as they don’t live close to her parents.

“The doctors asked me who I was, and I said I was the girlfriend, and they were like, ‘so what’?’ I couldn’t make any decision until her condition became quite serious,” she said. “I was so upset, like, if I had lost her … there would be nothing that could’ve made up for it. So, I think this is very important for both of us.”

How marriage equality became law

Thailand has a reputation for acceptance and inclusivity, but struggled for decades to pass a marriage equality law. Thai society largely holds conservative values. Members of the LGBTQ+ community say they face discrimination in everyday life, although they note that things have improved greatly in recent years.

The government led by the Pheu Thai party made marriage equality one of its main goals. It made a major effort to identify itself with the annual Bangkok Pride parade in June, in which thousands of people celebrated in one of Bangkok’s busiest commercial districts.

Last week, Government House invited dozens of LGBTQ+ couples and activists for a photo op and a meeting with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and several high ranking officials to celebrate the law coming into effect, making Thailand the first in Southeast Asia and the third place in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to legalize same-sex marriage.

“It is almost like a dream, but it’s not. So, congratulations to all,” Paetongtarn said. “I think it’s very important that the world notice us, and know that in this small country we have this kind of thought. We have this kind of support for our people. So, we all should be proud.”

The organizers of Bangkok Pride have collaborated with relevant government agencies to hold a grand celebration in central Bangkok and facilitate couples who wish to register their marriage on the very first day. They said that more than 300 couples have registered to officially tie the knot on Thursday at the event.

“(The law) is about returning our dignity, and confirming that we also have dignity as a human being,” said Ann “Waaddao” Chumaporn, a gender equality activist and the lead organizer of Bangkok Pride. “That day is going to be meaningful to all the couples that have gone through this journey together. I’d like to thank everyone, every love, that has faithfully struggled so that today would finally happen.”

How the law will be implemented

The government and state agencies in Thailand are historically traditional in outlook. To prepare them for change, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said that it has organized workshops for staff of all Bangkok district offices who are in charge of handling marriage registration. They included lectures raising awareness about gender diversity and guidance on how to properly communicate with those who come for the service.

“It’s like a missing piece of the jigsaw,” Bangkok Deputy Gov. Sanon Wangsrangboon said at one of the workshops earlier this month. “Society is ready. The law is getting ready. But the last piece of the jigsaw is the understanding from officials.”

He acknowledged there that would be problems in the beginning, but said that he hoped they would gradually improve over time.

After they register their marriage, Sunma said that she’s looking forward to having a “real marriage celebration” with her and Danaya’s families.

“It’s not just the two of us that are happy, but both of our families feel it is a big deal, and it is what everyone has been waiting for. Everyone said they are waiting for Jan. 23,” she said.

AP PHOTOS: Same-sex couples in Thailand speak of happiness before marriage equality law takes effect

It’s a big week for LGBTQ+ couples in Thailand.

On Thursday, they will be able to legally register their marriages, making it only the third place in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, where they have such a right. A grand celebration is planned in central Bangkok to facilitate hundreds of same-sex couples who plan to register their marriages on the very first day.

Thailand has a reputation for acceptance and inclusivity but has struggled for decades to pass a marriage equality law. Thai society has broadly conservative values, and members of the LGBTQ+ community say they face discrimination in everyday life.

The country’s landmark marriage equality bill was officially written into law on Sept. 24, after it was endorsed by King Maha Vajiralongkorn.

The government led by the Pheu Thai party made marriage equality one of its main goals after coming to power in 2023. It had a major presence at the annual Bangkok Pride parade in June, with thousands of people celebrating in one of Bangkok’s busiest commercial districts.

“This law doesn’t only equate life. It is life! At long last, Thailand’s society accepts the legality of all marriages in our land, regardless of sexual orientation. With that one sentence, lost or wasted lives have been rescued. Spirits restored. The whole country is better off.” — Jakrapob Penkair

“We’re quite fortunate. We have a supportive social circle, friends, and family who accept us for who we are and accept the person we love. Marriage, it seems, isn’t everything that fulfills us emotionally. “However, ultimately, we believe that as two human beings, we should be granted the same basic legal rights as heterosexual couples. We are a complete family in spirit, but legal recognition would alleviate our future anxieties. In the end, we aren’t asking for anything special — we just want a simple, happy family life.” — Patherine Khunnares

Siam Paragon Makes Luxury Art Accessible to All

Siam Paragon
'The Future in Our Hand' by Jaime Hayon

Siam Paragon reinforces its leadership in creating extraordinary experiences beyond expectations by continuing to elevate itself as the “Grand Stage of The World,” a global platform that showcases diverse experiences under the concept of “Luxury for All.”

This approach to luxury ensures that everyone can access and immerse themselves in every dimension of a truly refined lifestyle. Following extensive renovations that began in early 2024, Siam Paragon has undergone a remarkable transformation into a global luxury destination, spanning from the G floor to the 4th floor and covering over 100,000 square meters.

Beyond serving as a stage for ICONIC Stores featuring the latest designs from leading luxury brands and top-tier Thai brands, the space also integrates curated art throughout its premises under the concept of the “Arena of Arts.”

This initiative makes diverse forms of contemporary public art accessible to all, with rotating exhibitions that continually offer fresh perspectives. Thai artists are elevated to stand alongside leading international artists, showcased to over 100 million annual visitors to Siam Paragon. This transformation builds on the mall’s 20-year legacy as a pioneer in supporting Thai art, serving as a model venue for celebrating and honoring Thai creativity since its inception.

ONESIAM, a global destination in the heart of Bangkok, which brings together Siam Paragon, Siam Center, and Siam Discovery, has remained steadfast in its commitment to crafting experiences that continually leave visitors amazed (Be Amazed), inspired (Be Inspired), and immersed in revolutionary journeys (Be Revolutionary) through every generation.

ONESIAM was the first to introduce the concept of integrating art experiences into daily life, blending seamlessly with accessible and relatable lifestyles. Starting with Siam Center, carefully curated works by Thai artists established the venue as a symbol of “Creative Thais.” At Siam Discovery, this vision expanded through Art Collaborations with renowned global artists and designers, including M/M (Paris), led by Mathias Augustyniak and Michael Amzalag.

Meanwhile, SOFTlab, a design studio based in New York, partnered with ECOTOPIA to create a large-scale, tree-shaped installation that symbolizes a new interpretation of sustainability. Collaborations with seven internationally acclaimed artists—Rob Pruitt, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Nina Chanel Abney, Kenny Scharf, FriendsWithYou, André Saraiva x Mr. A, and AVAF—came to life through the Peanuts Artist Global Collective, marking its debut in Thailand.

Additionally, ONESIAM invited Jay Flow, a globally celebrated South Korean graffiti artist, to design a basketball court in the heart of the city, showcasing his distinctive artistic style. Together, the three destinations within ONESIAM deliver “first experiences,” continually inspiring and delighting visitors with unique, art-infused moments that transcend time.

This year, Siam Paragon has completed a monumental transformation and is preparing to celebrate its 20th anniversary as the “Grand Stage of The World.” This global platform offers extraordinary experiences across multiple dimensions under the concept of “Luxury for All,” redefining luxury to encompass every aspect of lifestyle for people of all genders, ages, and backgrounds. It reflects the idea that elevated experiences are no longer confined to products and shopping alone.

Notably, “art” is embraced as another essential dimension of meaningful experiences. Siam Paragon is committed to transforming its entire space into an “Arena of Arts,” a stage where Thai and international artists showcase their works in a single, unparalleled venue. This transformation allows visitors to effortlessly enjoy and engage with art through rotating exhibitions that bring fresh perspectives throughout the year. Additionally, the space will host art-focused activities and continuously share artistic knowledge, enriching the experience for all.

Salawit Suviporn, Executive Vice President, Head of Think Tank at Siam Piwat, stated, “A hallmark of all Siam Piwat projects has always been the design of experiences and customer journeys that leave a lasting impression on our visitors. Our primary goal is to create spaces that connect people with the unique stories behind each project, utilizing storytelling through stunning architecture, art, and innovative elements. These features establish an emotional connection with our visitors, transforming them into personalized content. We take great pride in achieving this at the highest level, earning numerous prestigious global awards from esteemed associations and organizations.”

“For the art at Siam Paragon, we prioritize selecting renowned artists from various countries and curating works that reflect the stories and unique identity of Siam Paragon with meticulous attention to detail. We also commission exclusive pieces from artists, creating one-of-a-kind works that can only be found at Siam Paragon. We believe that every visit to Siam Paragon is a journey through diverse experiences. Our goal is for everyone to feel the uniqueness and special qualities that set us apart from other destinations, allowing them to create compelling content inspired by our story.”

The “Aurora” Art Installation by world-renowned French visual artist Pascal Dombis draws inspiration from the Northern Lights. Trump Promises a ‘Golden Age of America’ in His Inauguration Speech

NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump’s second inaugural address featured similar themes to his first: a sweeping indictment of the country he inherits and grand promises to fix its problems.

Eight years ago, Trump described “American carnage” and promised to end it immediately. On Monday, he declared that the country’s “decline” will end immediately, ushering in “the golden age of America.”

Trump added a long list of policies that sounded more like a State of the Union speech than an Inauguration Day speech. But the broad themes were fundamentally Trumpian, setting himself up as a national savior.

Breaking tradition, the Republican president delivered his remarks from inside the Capitol Rotunda due to the bitter cold outside. He spoke to several hundred elected officials and pro-Trump VIPs, tech titan Elon Musk among them.

Here are some takeaways from the speech:

A promise of an American ‘golden age’

From the start, Trump’s speech tracked his campaign rally approach: big promises of national success due to his leadership, with plenty of sweeping indictments of the status quo.

“The golden age of America begins right now,” Trump said after ticking through the requisite nods to former presidents and other dignitaries. He added several more hyperbolic but nebulous promises: The ”start of a thrilling new era.” A nation “greater, stronger and far more exceptional than ever before.”

“Our sovereignty will be reclaimed. Our safety will be restored. The scales of justice will be rebalanced,” he continued. “Our top priority will be to create a nation that is proud, prosperous and free.”

The underlying presumption, of course, is that Trump is inheriting what he called throughout the 2024 campaign “a failed nation.”

He vowed to fulfill campaign promises to send troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, boost domestic oil production and impose tariffs to “enrich our citizens.”

Trump calls America’s past leadership corrupt

Trump described America’s leadership over the last four years as incompetent and corrupt, echoing some of the darker rhetoric he promoted on a daily basis as a presidential candidate on the campaign trail.

He did not call out his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, or any other Democrats by name, but there was no question about whom he was talking.

“We now have a government that cannot manage even a simple crisis at home, while at the same time stumbling into a continuing catalog of catastrophic events abroad,” Trump charged.

He said the current government protects dangerous immigrants instead of law-abiding citizens, protects foreign borders at the expense of American borders and “can no longer deliver basic services in times of emergency.”

And, as he often does, Trump cast him self as uniquely positioned to fix it all.

“All of this will change starting today, and it will change very quickly,” he said.

As of Monday, Republicans control all three branches of the federal government.

Recasting his assassination attempt

Trump mentioned the attempt to assassinate him in Butler, Pennsylvania, using striking language to describe how he survived.

“I was saved by God to make America great again,” Trump said to applause.

The shooter was an apparently disturbed 20-year-old local man. Trump baselessly implied the attack was part of a conspiracy to stop him from returning to office.

Lying about wildfires

Trump’s lament about the state of the nation included disbelief that the fires around Los Angeles were still burning “without a token defense.”

That’s false. Firefighters have been battling the blazes since they erupted and have made significant progress. The Eaton fire is 87% contained, and the Palisades fire 59% contained, according to CalFire.

A different scene indoors

Inaugural speeches are traditionally delivered on the National Mall in front of tens of thousands of cheering supporters, many of them average voters from across America, who traveled great distance to witness history in person.

Not this one.

Trump delivered his speech in front of a crowd estimated at only around 600 in the Capitol Rotunda, which was limited to members of Congress, Cabinet nominees, Trump’s family, business leaders and political VIPs. In fact, a collection of tech titans, led by Musk and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, were positioned in front of Cabinet members in some cases. And while the business leaders were allowed to bring their spouses, members of Congress were not. Thousands of his supporters watched a broadcast of the swearing-in at Capitol One Arena instead.

It’s noteworthy that four years ago, violent Trump loyalists stormed the Capitol Rotunda as members of Congress and Vice President Mike Pence feared for their lives. Pence attended Monday, though his wife, former second lady Karen Pence, did not.

Thailand Considers Reducing 60-Day Visa Waiver for Chinese Tourists

BANGKOK — Thailand is considering reducing the visa-free period for Chinese tourists from 60 to 10-15 days, following concerns over scammer gangs targeting foreign visitors, particularly Chinese nationals, who are being lured into Myanmar.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool stated today that while the agency opposes completely eliminating the visa-free policy for Chinese tourists, they are open to listening to tourism operators about reducing the stay duration to better align with typical Chinese tourist behavior, as most visitors stay between 7-10 days.

Thailand initiated visa-free entry for Chinese tourists on September 25, 2023, during Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s administration. Later, Thailand announced a 60-day visa exemption for 93 countries, including China, extending the period from 30 to 60 days, effective from July 15, 2024, to the present.

The agency maintains its 2025 target of 8 million Chinese tourists, up from 6.73 million in the previous year, with the Tourism Minister setting an ambitious goal of 8.8-9 million visitors.

The impact of recent security concerns has already affected the tourism sector. Thai Hotels Association President Thien Prasit Chaiphatranant revealed that 12,428 room cancellations have been recorded since January, with 4,572 cancellations from Chinese tourists and 7,856 from other nationalities. The cancellations followed a high-profile incident involving Chinese celebrity Wang Xing becoming a victim of scammers.

Bangkok topped the list of cancellations by Chinese tourists, followed by Nonthaburi, Chiang Rai, Chonburi, and Chiang Mai. For non-Chinese tourists, Chonburi saw the highest number of cancellations, followed by Bangkok and Krabi.

Despite these challenges, hotel operators note that the impact on individual travelers remains limited, with group tours being more affected by the current situation.

kiirat conference
Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panpetch chairs a video conference on January 20 to discuss measures against transnational crime, including cases of scammers targeting Chinese tourists in Thailand.

In response to these challenges, National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Panpetch held an emergency video conference today with regional police commanders to address transnational crime and strengthen tourist security measures. He emphasized that Thai tourism authorities were not involved in any scamming operations and announced enhanced surveillance of border areas, particularly in Mae Sot district, where illegal border crossings have been reported.

The police chief assured that law enforcement would focus on ensuring tourist safety from arrival through their entire stay in Thailand, implementing preventive measures rather than just responding to incidents after they occur.
