Mr. Prasop Riangngoen, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Representative of the Minister of Culture, serves as the Chairperson of the Contemporary Art Promotion Committee, stated that culture and creativity play vital roles in the development of the economy and society. Thai contemporary art serves as a form of Soft Power that enhances Thailand’s status and role in the global community. The Ministry of Culture is therefore focused on driving policies that support creative power, or Soft Power, to elevate and develop the knowledge, skills, and creativity of Thai people, creating value and generating income for products and services based on social and cultural capital. Furthermore, it aims to empower individuals as key factors in driving the cultural economy and society by providing support and access to funding for artists, networks, and cultural entrepreneurs. This also includes efforts to preserve, restore, and further develop cultural arts, as well as promote local wisdom.

“The Contemporary Art Promotion Fund has actively integrated cooperation in developing contemporary art at all levels and has continuously promoted, supported, and disseminated creative cultural activities. Today, I would like to congratulate all the recipients of the funding and every organization involved. This is yet another opportunity for all of us to jointly promote the creation of Thai contemporary art, inspire artists, and provide opportunities for Thai artists across the country, including both emerging artists and local artists, especially at the community level, to develop themselves in the fields of culture and creativity. Moreover, art enthusiasts can further develop their works as Soft Power, which can lead to sustainable economic growth and position Thailand as one of the leading nations in Soft Power globally in the future,” stated the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture.image3 6

KhunyingPatama Leeswadtrakul, Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Contemporary Art Promotion Fund, stated that the fund has supported the work of artists and contemporary cultural organizations, entering its eighth year. From 2018 to 2025, it has promoted a total of 275 projects with a combined budget of over 87 million baht. For the fiscal year 2025, the fund has promoted 113 projects in the first round, amounting to a total of 44,900,000 baht, covering eight categories: Visual Arts (33 projects), Performing Arts (30 projects), Music (20 projects), Literary Arts (11 projects), Architecture (4 projects), Graphic Arts (4 projects), Film (8 projects), and Costume Design (3 projects).  All projects that have received support contribute to engagement with networks at local, community, national, and international levels, developing activities that build upon cultural capital to promote sustainable development in social, cultural, and creative economic dimensions. This proactive integration through the artistic ecosystem can clearly elevate social value and creative economy, aligning with the government’s Soft Power policy. Today marks a valuable opportunity for recipients of the Contemporary Art Promotion Fund and networks from all sectors to come together to exchange ideas, knowledge, and experiences in contemporary art, while jointly promoting and enhancing Thai contemporary art as a Soft Power that plays a recognized role both domestically and internationally.

“In addition to providing funding, the Contemporary Art Promotion Fund has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the promotion and development of contemporary art and culture with the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage. This brings the number of collaborating organizations to four. In the year 2025, the network partners working together with the Contemporary Art Promotion Fund will include the Mae Fah Luang Foundation, ICONSIAM Co., Ltd., Chat Lab Group, and UOB Bank Public Company Limited. These organizations organize the 15th UOB Painting of the Year exhibition at the Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Gallery, coinciding with the presentation of works by recipients of the Contemporary Art Promotion Fund for the year 2024, which takes place from December 27, 2024, to January 18, 2025. We invite all interested individuals to visit the exhibition and support the artists. This collaboration with network partners will strengthen integration among organizations within the artistic ecosystem, promoting contemporary art in a proactive manner. It will also enhance awareness of contemporary art works and activities on a broader scale, contributing to the enhancement of social value and increasing the economic value of creative work continuously and tangibly at the local, regional, national, and international levels,” stated Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Contemporary Art Promotion Fund.

Mrs. Kesorn Kumnerdpech Deputy Director-General, Acting Director-General, Office of Contemporary Art and Culture, stated that the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture is responsible for promoting, supporting, and disseminating activities related to the creative contemporary arts to enhance knowledge and their application in society. The Contemporary Art Promotion Fund serves as a funding source that continuously supports contemporary art projects across nine categories for applicants every year. In the year 2025, the Office of Contemporary Art and Culture will support the Ratchadamnoen Contemporary Art Gallery in organizing activities aimed at promoting and developing networks to support the creation of contemporary art. This includes showcasing the works of recipients funded by the Contemporary Art Promotion Fund for the year 2024 in an exhibition format, allowing interested individuals to visit from December 27, 2024, to January 18, 2025.

“We invite you to visit the works of recipients funded by the Contemporary Art Promotion Fund for the year 2024, which will be on display until January 18. The exhibition showcases concrete works that demonstrate knowledge, skills, and the enhancement of cultural capital to foster creative output through the fund’s support in four key areas: (1) research and development of knowledge in contemporary arts and culture to enhance the country’s economic competitiveness, (2) promotion and support for the creation of contemporary cultural works to build an artistic ecosystem and elevate the creative cultural industry, (3) collaboration networks to promote the contemporary cultural identity of each locality and (4) promotion and dissemination of Thai contemporary art both domestically and internationally. All of these efforts aim to support and strengthen network collaborations in creating valuable works, leading to sustainable economic and social exchange and enhancement,” emphasized the Deputy Director-General, Office of Contemporary Art and Culture.

CP Foods Strengthens Food Security for the Navy Through Chicken Farm Project

Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CP Foods) strengthens food security through its partnership with the Royal Thai Navy, launching an egg-laying chicken project at the Naval Agricultural Center in Bang Phra, Chonburi. The initiative ensures a sustainable supply of high-quality eggs for naval personnel and their families, demonstrating CP Foods’ ongoing commitment to supporting local communities.

Royal Thai Navy Chief Admiral Jiraphon Wongwit revealed that the Navy has collaborated with CP Foods for over 30 years. This partnership has recently extended to the development of activities at the Bang Phra Naval Agriculture Center in Chonburi Province, under the Naval Welfare Department. The initiative allows personnel and their families to consume premium eggs while benefiting from agricultural demonstration plots, which serve as learning resources and welfare support for the Navy. The project has been supported by the Charoen Pokphand Foundation and CP Foods, including the construction of chicken coops and the provision of layer chickens and animal feed at special prices, ensuring the project’s sustainability.

image3 5

“Over the years, CP Foods has consistently supported projects and facility improvements. Recently, the company upgraded three egg-laying chicken houses to meet hygienic standards, enhancing production efficiency, which reduces costs while increasing egg availability,” said Admiral Jiraphon.

Prasit Boondoungprasert, CEO of CP Foods, stated that the project aligns with the “Three Benefits” philosophy of Dhanin Chearavanont, Senior Chairman of the Charoen Pokphand Group—focusing on benefits to the people, the country, and the company.

He emphasized CP Foods’ commitment to contributing to the Navy, which plays a crucial role in protecting the nation and its people. For over three decades, CP Foods has supported the Navy’s agricultural programs by leveraging advanced technology and expertise to promote and develop standard farming systems. Notably, the company donated closed-layer chicken houses with Evaporative Cooling System (EVAP systems) to the Bang Phra Naval Agriculture Center in 2002, providing welfare for Navy personnel and their families. In this latest phase, CP Foods supported the renovation of EVAP systems, feeding equipment, water systems, ceiling and side curtain systems, and bird and snake-proof netting.

image2 6

“The egg farming project represents an academic and social collaboration that supports the Navy’s goal of creating learning resources and welfare for its personnel and their families. CP Foods provided funding and transferred knowledge from its expert team to enable personnel to independently manage the project and further serve as knowledge disseminators to others,” Mr. Prasit added.

The Bang Phra Naval Agriculture Center has also established agricultural demonstration plots, such as pig farming and layer chicken farming, for Navy personnel, their families, and the public. Additionally, these facilities serve as vocational training centers for personnel and their families, equipping them with career skills for retirement. Currently, the egg farming project is undergoing improvements in three chicken houses, each housing 5,000 chickens. Construction is expected to be completed within the first quarter of 2025.

BANGKOK — The Cyber Police Task Force has apprehended two Chinese nationals who masqueraded as tour guides while operating a sophisticated mobile scam operation targeting thousands of shoppers across Bangkok’s busiest commercial areas.

The suspects used advanced signal-jamming technology to distribute fraudulent SMS messages to nearby mobile devices.

The operation utilized false base station technology to transmit fraudulent SMS messages containing phishing links to nearby mobile devices. The suspects drove through heavily populated areas including ICONSIAM, Asiatique, and CentralWorld, broadcasting their signal within a 1-3 kilometer radius.

This equipment effectively suppressed legitimate cellular tower signals, allowing the scammers to distribute deceptive messages to up to 30,000 phone numbers in targeted areas.

Following an investigation, police raided two apartments at JR Court in Nuanchan Soi 60, Bueng Kum district, on January 9. Two Chinese nationals were arrested: Mr. Li, 49, and Mr. Zhu, 47. Officers seized a bronze Honda CR-V equipped with the false base station device, 11 mobile phones, multiple bank accounts, ATM cards, and over 30 SIM cards.

Cyber Police arrested Chinese suspects in an SMS mobile scam at JR Court in Nuanchan Soi 60, Bueng Kum district, on January 9, 2025.

Police Lieutenant General Trairong Phiwphan, Commander of the Economic Crime Suppression Division, revealed that the investigation was conducted in collaboration with Advanced Info Service  (AIS) engineers.

The suspects had entered Thailand in mid-December claiming to be tour guides. While they denied involvement in the scam, claiming they borrowed the vehicle from a friend, police have evidence linking them to fraudulent SMS activities over the past four days.

A third Chinese suspect, who had been renting an apartment in the same building for nearly a year, remains at large. Police are continuing their investigation to track down this suspect and any other potential accomplices.

Wisitsak Charoenchai, Director of Corporate Relations at AIS, emphasized that legitimate mobile operators never send messages containing links to customers. He warned the public to avoid clicking on any such links, as they are exclusively used by scammers attempting to steal funds from victims’ accounts.

LA Wildfire Survivors Recount Dramatic Escapes by Foot, By Car and Aid

A woman cries as the Palisades Fire advances in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2025. (AP Photo/Etienne Laurent)

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Flames and pillars of smoke rose from both sides of the road and a woman yelled in panic as firefighters ushered a crowd of fleeing residents along. Aaron Samson positioned his 83-year-old father-in-law behind his blue walker, and they began shuffling down the sidewalk.

“My father-in-law was saying, ‘Aaron, if we are ever in a position where the flames are right there, you just run and leave me here,’” Samson recounted Wednesday.

It didn’t get to that point. For the second time in a matter of hours, a good Samaritan picked them up, then drove them to safety in Santa Monica.

Their escape came as thousands of people fled wildfires in the Los Angeles area that turned picturesque neighborhoods into smoldering wasteland, with chimneys or wrought-iron staircases about all that remained of homes. Driven by powerful Santa Ana winds, the flames obliterated more than 1,000 structures, scorched landmarks made famous by Hollywood and killed at least five people. One of the fires was the most destructive in the modern history of the city of LA.

The escapes were perhaps the most harrowing from a disaster that Los Angeles has ever seen. People abandoned their cars and fled on foot as tree limbs crashed down and howling winds sent flames flying in every direction. Others flagged down rides from friends or strangers. With so many cars abandoned in the middle of Sunset Boulevard in Pacific Palisades, authorities had a bulldozer push the vehicles out of the way to clear a path for emergency vehicles.

Hard-hit Altadena produced one of the most heart-wrenching scenes: As flames closed in, about 100 elderly residents at senior care facilities were hurried out in hospital beds and wheelchairs. Many were wearing flimsy bedclothes in the chilly night air as they were wheeled to a parking lot about a block away. As wind-whipped embers swirled around them in the smoky air, they waited for help to arrive. Eventually all were taken to a shelter.

More evacuations were ordered late Wednesday after a new fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills.

Losing a childhood home of 30 years

Hundreds of evacuees wound up at the Pasadena Convention Center, many of them older residents of assisted living facilities. They sat wheelchair to wheelchair or lay on green cots, and some family members tearfully reunited there Wednesday as ash rained outside.

EJ Soto described leaving her childhood Altadena home of 30 years with her mother, two nieces, sister and husband at 3:25 a.m. after staying up overnight and watching the flames creep closer.

“We had already decided, we’re not going to sleep,” Soto said.

She instructed her family to pack their bags with two days of clothing and put them in the car, along with food and supplies for their cat, Callie. They drove to the Rose Bowl stadium and waited for two hours, then returned to check on their neighborhood.

They saw three homes on their block burning — and finally their own, engulfed in flames two stories high.

Saved by strangers — twice

Samson, 48, was in Pacific Palisades at his father-in-law’s home caring for him when the time came to flee Tuesday. They had no car, however, and were unable to secure a ride through Uber or by calling 911. Samson flagged down a neighbor, who agreed to take give them and their two bags a lift.

After a little more an half an hour in traffic, the flames closed in. The tops of palm trees burned like giant sparklers in the incessant wind.

With vehicles at a standstill, police ordered people to get out and flee on foot. Samson and his father-in-law left their bags and made their way to the sidewalk. The father-in-law, who is recovering from a medical procedure, steadied himself against a utility pole as Samson retrieved his walker and recorded the ordeal on his cellphone.

“We got it, Dad, we got it,” Samson said.

They walked for about 15 minutes before another good Samaritan saw them struggling, stopped and told them to get in his vehicle.

By Wednesday afternoon, Samson did not know if the home survived. But he said they were indebted to the two strangers.

“They saved us,” he said. “They really stepped up.”

Ready to seek safety in a pool

Another Pacific Palisades resident, Sheriece Wallace, didn’t know about the fire until her sister called — just as a helicopter made a water drop over Wallace’s house.

“I was like, ‘It’s raining,’” Wallace said. “She’s like, ‘No, it’s not raining. Your neighborhood is on fire. You need to get out.’”

She opened her door and saw the hillside behind her home was ablaze. The street below was choked with abandoned cars and boulders that had tumbled down the canyon. She thought she might have to jump into a pool to save herself, but instead walked to a street corner and lucked upon a neighbor who offered her a ride.

“There was no other way for me to get out,” Wallace said. “And if it had not been for the grace of God, my neighbor’s son coming to get their mother and me going to the corner to just try to flag someone down …”

Losing family heirlooms and a community

Altadena resident Eddie Aparicio was dumbstruck as he and his partner evacuated Tuesday evening, inching through bumper-to-bumper traffic as nearly hurricane-force winds howled around them.

“Limbs were falling everywhere. Massive trees were on top of cars,” Aparicio said. “Seeing the embers and flames jump off the mountain, skip 30 blocks and land on a house — it’s insane.”

They finally reached the home of his partner’s mother. The next morning a neighbor sent a video showing that his house — like so many others on his block — had burned down. The chimney alone was still standing.

While they lost some family mementos, such as paintings by Aparicio’s grandmother and father, the saddest part was the loss of a beloved community.

“It makes me feel very existential,” Aparicio said. “You never know what’s going to happen.”

A beloved beachside seafood shack, gone

Among the landmarks devoured by the flames was the historic ranch house that belonged to Hollywood legend Will Rogers and the Topanga Ranch Motel, built by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst in 1929.

The Reel Inn, an iconic Malibu seafood shack across the Pacific Coast Highway from Topanga Beach, a famous surf spot, also burned. Restaurants had operated in that location since the 1940s; the Reel Inn — where surf boards dating back almost a century hung from the rafters — opened in 1986.

Owner Teddy Leonard said she and her husband, Andy, watched it burn on television Tuesday evening from their home a few miles away. They then drove their Kawasaki Mule — a four-wheel utility vehicle that looks like a souped-up golf cart — to the top of a ridge that overlooks the ocean. The sky was bright red, and the winds were so strong that she felt she was about to be blown out of the vehicle.

“You could see sparks of fires,” Leonard said. “At one point there’s the whole ridge burning.”

Far to the left, she spotted another fire, and then to the right, a flare-up.

“You realize that the wind is picking up the embers and dropping them in different spots, that there’s no way that those firemen could fight this fire,” Leonard said.

The couple evacuated to an Airbnb that her son rented after his apartment in Malibu burned. Leonard did not yet know if their home survived, but they were grateful to be alive and to have each other and their family.

“You’re in this disaster, and it’s nature,” she said. “There’s no controlling what’s happening.”

Chulalongkorn University Partners with WEF on ‘Future of Jobs 2025’ Report for Thailand

Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, announces the findings from the “Future of Jobs 2025” report. Chulalongkorn University is the only partner institution in Thailand collaboration with the World Economic Forum to propose a roadmap for coping with changes in the labour market over the 2025–2030 period.

The report is based on a comprehensive survey of 1,000 employers, covering 14 million workers across 22 industries and 55 economies globally. The findings show that:

  • 170 million new jobs are expected to emerge, driven by technological change and the green transition.
  • 92 million jobs are predicted to disappear due to automation and economic transformations.
  • A net employment growth of 7%, equivalent to 78 million jobs globally.

image2 4

Major Drivers of Change by 2030

The order of priority is as follows:

  1. Technological Change: AI, robotics, and energy innovations are key drivers, transforming job roles and skill demands.
  2. Economic Uncertainty: Rising living costs and economic slowdowns pose challenges.
  3. Green Transition: Climate mitigation and adaptation spur demand for environmental engineers and renewable energy specialists.
  4. Demographic Shifts: Aging populations in high-income countries and workforce expansions in low-income regions reshape labour dynamics.
  5. Geo-economic Fragmentation: Trade restrictions and geopolitical tensions influence business models.

Skills of the Future: Thailand vs Global

By 2030, two-fifths of existing skills will transform. The top skills for Thailand reflect a unique focus on AI and big data, analytical thinking, creative thinking, and networks and cybersecurity. Globally, AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, technological literacy, and creative thinking take precedence.

image3 3

Top 5 Workforce Strategies for Thailand

  1. Upskilling workforce: Prepare Thai people with knowledge and skills that meet the needs of the labour market.
  2. Hire staff with new skills to meet emerging business needs: Find and support potential people with skills that meet the needs of the modern economy.
  3. Accelerate the automation of processes and tasks: Use automation to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
  4. Transition existing staff from declining to growing roles: Giving people added value in modern work.
  5. Complement and augment your workforce with new technologies: Linking cutting-edge technologies to create innovations that add value and competitiveness.

image6image5 2

Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat also stated “Chulalongkorn University has become ‘The University of AI’, creating “Future Humans” who are not only experts in the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) but also possess unique skills such as II (Instinctual Intelligence). The important thing is that the ‘new generation’ must not only have a smart brain but also a good heart, transforming technological abilities into a force that creates value for both themselves and society.”

image1 6

He stated that Thailand is still in the early stages of AI development, focusing on reskilling and upskilling to prepare the workforce for future jobs that require a diverse set of skills. “The only way to surpass artificial intelligence is through instinct, understanding of the world, and mastery through practice,” Dr. Wilert said.

Dr. Wilert added that universities must shift away from traditional 2-4 year degree programs and instead offer short, 6-month courses that focus on creating “skill incubators” to develop essential skills for the future. These programs must be flexible, adapting to technology and meeting the demands of the job market.

“Education should not only transmit knowledge but also apply that knowledge to society,” he said. “To prepare for the future, we must create an environment where people, even those with existing degrees, can continue to develop their skills in just six months.”

PATTAYAA 57-year-old Swiss national passed away after suffering a sudden loss of consciousness while riding his motorcycle in South Pattaya on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred in Soi Bua Khao when the man suddenly collapsed while riding his motorcycle to pick up his 4-5 year old son from school. The collapse caused his motorcycle to fall and make minor contact with a local songthaew (public transport vehicle). He was en route to Wat Chai Mongkol Kindergarten at the time of the incident.

Emergency responders found him unconscious at the scene and immediately began performing CPR while waiting for additional medical support. The patient was rushed to Pattaya City Hospital for emergency treatment, where medical staff later pronounced him deceased despite their efforts.

Ms. Sangwan Niyomchat, 48, the child’s caregiver, said the Swiss father had returned to Thailand just two months ago. “He loved his son very much. The boy was born to his former Thai partner, with whom he had separated. Whenever he was in Thailand, he would always take care of his son and pick him up from school,” she said.

Initial indications suggest the death was caused by a sudden medical condition rather than injuries from the minor motorcycle incident. Authorities are conducting further investigation.
