Trump says Musk, Ramaswamy Will Form Outside Group to Advise White House on Government Efficiency

WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday said Elon Musk and former GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new “Department of Government Efficiency” — which is not, despite the name, a government agency.

The acronym “DOGE” is a nod to Musk’s favorite cryptocurrency, dogecoin. Trump said in a statement that Musk and Ramaswamy will work from outside the government to offer the White House “advice and guidance” and will partner with the Office of Management and Budget to “drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before.” He added that the move would shock government systems.

It’s not clear how the organization will operate. It could come under the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which dictates how external groups that advise the government must operate and be accountable to the public.

Federal employees are generally required to disclose their assets and entanglements to ward off any potential conflicts of interest, and to divest significant holdings relating to their work. Because Musk and Ramaswamy would not be formal federal workers, they would not face those requirements or ethical limitations.

Musk posted on X: “Department of Government Efficiency. The merch will be (fire emojis).” Later he added: “Threat to democracy? Nope, threat to BUREAUCRACY!!!”

Musk has been a constant presence at Mar-a-Lago since Trump won the presidential election.

The president-elect has often said he would give Musk a formal role overseeing a group akin to a blue-ribbon commission that would recommend ways to slash spending and make the federal government more efficient. Musk at one point suggested he could find more than $2 trillion in savings — nearly a third of total annual government spending.

Trump had made clear that Musk would likely not hold any kind of full-time position, given his other commitments.

“I don’t think I can get him full-time because he’s a little bit busy sending rockets up and all the things he does,” Trump said at a rally in Michigan in September. “He said the waste in this country is crazy. And we’re going to get Elon Musk to be our cost cutter.”

Ramaswamy suspended his campaign in January and threw his support behind Trump.

Trump said in his statement the two will “pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies.”

Chinese Tourists’ Pattaya Trip Turns Into Scammer Ring at Myanmar Border

call centre
The route from Mae Sot, Tak Province, Thailand to Myawaddy, Myanmar is believed to be one of the routes that call center gangs use to transport people from Thailand to be trained as scammers.

MAE SOTThai police successfully rescued five Chinese tourists who nearly fell victim to a cross-border trafficking scheme on Tuesday. The tourists, who had arranged for transportation to Pattaya, a popular beach resort, found themselves instead being driven to Mae Sot on Thailand’s border with Myanmar.

The group was intercepted at the Huai Hin Fon security checkpoint on the Mae Sot-Tak road. Officials discovered the tourists during a routine vehicle inspection, where all five were found to have valid passports. Through a Chinese interpreter, the tourists revealed they had no intention of traveling to the border area and were shocked to learn of their diverted route.

Police believe the group was likely being trafficked to Myawaddy, Myanmar, where they would have been forced to work in illegal scam call centers. Similar trafficking cases have been previously documented in the area. Following their rescue, authorities safely escorted the tourists to their intended destination in Pattaya.

Police Lieutenant General Prajuab Wongsuk, Assistant National Police Chief, visited the area to oversee anti-trafficking operations.

Police Lieutenant General Prajuab Wongsuk, Assistant National Police Chief, was briefed on this case while visiting the area to oversee anti-trafficking operations. He also inspected a local victim identification center where other rescued trafficking victims are currently being sheltered.

‘We are implementing stricter border control measures, including AI-assisted monitoring systems, to prevent human trafficking and transnational crime,’ Lt. Gen. Prajuab stated. He emphasized the government’s commitment to combating trafficking networks, particularly those operating along the Thai-Myanmar border.

The operation involved coordination between multiple agencies, including the 3rd Army Region, Tak Immigration Office, local authorities, and international NGOs. Officials are continuing their investigation into the trafficking network responsible for this attempted crime.

Driver Rams His Car Into Crowd in China, Killing 35. Police Say He Was Upset About His Divorce

ZHUHAI, China (AP) — A man who authorities said was upset over his divorce settlement rammed his car into a crowd of people exercising at a sports complex in southern China, killing 35 and severely injuring dozens of others, police said Tuesday.

Police detained the 62-year-old man, who is being treated for wounds thought to be self-inflicted, shortly after the attack Monday night in the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai. The city is hosting the People’s Liberation Army’s annual aviation exhibition, which opened Tuesday, and searches for what happened were heavily censored for users behind China’s Great Firewall.

Outside of the controls, however, videos circulated on the social media platform X. In several, dozens of people could be seen lying on the track at the sports complex, which is regularly used by hundreds of residents to run, play soccer or dance.

In one, shared by news blogger and dissident Li Ying, a woman says “my foot is broken.” That same video showed a firefighter performing CPR on a person, as others were told to leave. Li, who is known on X as Teacher Li, posts daily news based on user submissions

In addition to the 35 people killed, police said 43 were injured.

China has seen a number of attacks in which suspects appear to target members of the public at random.

In October, a man was detained after he allegedly attacked children with a knife at a school in Beijing. Five people were wounded. In September, three people were killed in a knife attack in a Shanghai supermarket, and another 15 were injured. Police said at the time that the suspect had personal financial disputes and came to Shanghai to “vent his anger.”

In May, two people were killed and 21 injured in a knife attack in a hospital in Yunnan province.

Police identified the man detained in Monday’s attack only by his family name of Fan, as is typical, and said he was unconscious and receiving medical care after being found in his car with a knife and wounded.

He was dissatisfied with the split of financial assets in his divorce, according to a preliminary investigation, police said.

Chinese authorities appeared to be tightly controlling information about the incident. Internet censors tend to take extra care to scrub social media ahead of and during major events, such as the aviation exhibition or the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress.

For almost 24 hours after the attack, it was unclear what the death or injury toll was. On Tuesday morning, a search on the Chinese social media platform Weibo for the sports center turned up just a few posts, with only a couple referring to the fact something had happened, without pictures or details. Articles by Chinese media from Monday night about the incident were taken down.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping called for the “strict” punishment of the perpetrator according to law in a statement Tuesday evening.

He also called on all local governments “to strengthen prevention and control of risks at the source, strictly prevent extreme cases from occurring, and to resolve conflicts and disputes in a timely manner,” according to the official Xinhua news agency.

Who is Kittiratt Na-Ranong, The Chairman-elect of the Bank of Thailand

Kittiratt
Kittiratt Na-Ranong

BANGKOK — Although opposition to the appointment of Kittiratt Na-Ranong as chairman of the Bank of Thailand (BOT) delayed a meeting on November 4, Kittiratt finally secured the post in a nearly five-hour selection process on November 11.

Kittiratt received more support from the selection committee than the other two candidates nominated by the BOT: Kulit Sombatsiri, a former permanent secretary at the Ministry of Energy, and Surapol Nitikraipot, president of the Thammasat College Council and an independent director at PTT Plc.

Following his selection as the Bank of Thailand Chairman-elect, Kittiratt posted a message on November 12, saying “All voices of support serve as encouragement, while all voices of criticism serve as reminders to maintain good thoughts, good speech, and good actions.”

The Fifth BOT Chairman

Sathit Limpongpan, Chairman of the Bank of Thailand Board Chairman Selection Committee, confirmed that there was no political interference in the selection process. The next step is to submit Kittiratt’s name to the Minister of Finance, who will then propose it to the Cabinet for approval. Once the cabinet approves, the nomination will be submitted to the king for royal assent.

If all goes as planned, Kittiratt will become the fifth chairman of the Bank of Thailand since the 2008 BOT Act came into effect. His predecessors include M.R. Chatumongol Sonakul, Dr. Virabongsa Ramangkura, Mr. Ampon Kittiampon and Mr. Porametee Vimolsiri, whose term ends on September 11, 2024.

The opposition to Kittiratt is largely made up of groups that also oppose former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the Pheu Thai Party, academics and four former BOT governors who are concerned about political influence on the central bank’s independence.

Kittiratt first made a name for himself in business before joining the Pheu Thai Party and serving as Minister of Finance under Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

kittiratt3
Kittiratt Na-Ranong

National Football Team Manager

He was born on August 3, 1958 to Mr. Keng Na-Ranong and Mrs. Wilatda (née Harnpanich). He attended Assumption School for middle school and Triam Udom Suksa School for high school. Kittiratt graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Chulalongkorn College in 1980, followed by a Master’s degree from Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration, Chulalongkorn College.

Throughout his career, Kittiratt has taught at the College and served as Sasin’s associate director of academic affairs from 2006-2010. He also served as president of Shinawatra College from 2010-2011.

He is known as a football enthusiast and once managed Thailand’s national soccer teams, including the U14 team in 2002, the Asian Games team in 2006 and the senior national team in 2008. He was chairman of the Prime Bangkok Soccer Club in the Thai league in 2023.

In his private life, he is married to wife Kesara (née Thanapoom), with whom he has three children: Mr. Ton, Mr. Tor and Mr. Tree Na-Ranong. His eldest son, Mr. Ton Na-Ranong, currently serves as an advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Sports.

kittiratt4
Kittiratt Na-Ranong served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, and later became Minister of Finance in the Yingluck Shinawatra government during 2011-2014.

From Business to Political Career

Kittiratt’s career began in business, eventually advancing to Managing Director of the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) from 2001-2006. He then served as a director at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 2006-2008.

He joined the Pheu Thai Party in 2011 under Yingluck’s government, taking roles as Deputy Prime Minister of Finance and Minister of Commerce, later becoming Minister of Finance in 2012. His political career paused after the 2014 coup.

In 2020, he returned to politics and was elected deputy chairman of the Pheu Thai Party. After the Pheu Thai Party formed the government in 2023, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin appointed him Chief Advisor.

Following Prime Minister Srettha’s resignation after a Constitutional Court ruling on August 14, 2024, Kittiratt re-emerged on the political scene as the Ministry of Finance’s candidate for BOT chairman, eventually winning the post alongside two other experts: Pongphan Svetarundra, former permanent secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and Choonhajit Sangmai, former deputy permanent secretary of the Ministry of Finance.

kittiratt2
Srettha Thavisin and Kittiratt Na-Ranong

Fear of Political Interference

The Board of Directors of the Bank of Thailand oversees the activities of the BOT, except those related to the Monetary Policy Committee, the Financial Institutions Committee and the Payment Systems Committee, as stipulated in the BOT Act.

The appointment of Kittiratt was met with opposition and concern over possible threats to the independence of the central bank, particularly due to previous disputes over interest rate cuts and the management of the baht during Srettha’s tenure as prime minister.

In addition, there is speculation over whether his leadership could lead to a change in the BOT Act, particularly with regard to transferring the Financial Institutions Development Fund (FIDF) debt to the BOT’s debt management arm instead of leaving it under the Ministry of Finance in case the government needs to borrow more to fund economic policies in the future.

A long-standing problem is the country’s international reserves, which have accumulated to over 200 billion dollars (6.96 trillion baht). Some economists, including the late Veerapong Ramangkura, have suggested using some of it to generate revenue for the country.

As someone close to politics, Kittiratt is likely to face opposition from various political groups and interest groups who fear the influence of the Pheu Thai Party and still have the image of Thaksin Shinawatra in their minds.

Kittiratt’s new role as BOT board chairman will undoubtedly be a challenge and come with significant obstacles.
