This installation invites everyone to join in the immersive, celebratory atmosphere.

ICONSIAM also incorporates the traditional Thai “Kriab Mirror” into the Christmas tree decorations. This decorative technique is revived by artist Ratchapon Tajaya, an award-winning craftsman in the conservation of Ancient Thai Glass or Kriab Mirror, blending scientific techniques to enhance traditional craftsmanship.

His work earned the National Research Excellence Award for preserving ancient Thai glass craftsmanship and SACICT’s Master of Craftsmanship Award in 2022. The distinctive shimmer of ancient Thai glass, with its light-reflecting quality, is ideal for creating radiant sculptures and helps sustain this heritage craft for future generations.

In addition, there is a special performance called The Thai-conic Christmas Symphony, featuring a Christmas tree that lights up in sync with the music. This performance blends the melodious sounds of traditional Thai music with international instruments. The music is composed and arranged by Dr. Narong Prangcharoen, the first Thai to win the prestigious Charles Ives Award for Music Composition (Charles Ives Fellowship) from The American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The show will be held three times daily at 6:50 p.m., 7:50 p.m., and 8:50 p.m., from November 1 to December 25, 2024, to spread joy and prosperity to all who join the festive celebrations. ONYX Unveils ‘COLOUR Your Life’ Experience at Shama

ONYX Hospitality Group, a leading management company for luxury hotels, resorts, serviced apartments, and residences in Southeast Asia, is driving the continued growth of its Shama brand. As part of its ongoing effort to elevate the guest experience, Shama – ONYX Hospitality Group’s premier serviced apartment brand – is launching an exclusive activity under the “Live Your Blended Life at Shama” campaign: a “COLOUR Your Life” experience.

This initiative is designed to further establish Shama as a true home-away-from-home, providing guests with the perfect balance of comfort, convenience, and a sense of belonging from the moment they arrive. By offering unique and enriching experiences, Shama helps guests seamlessly integrate into the local community, fostering meaningful connections and ensuring an immersive, authentic stay.

image3 12

The activity will be organised through the Shama Social Club, a lifestyle programme designed to connect guests at Shama and help them integrate their lives with their new surroundings, allowing them to fully experience the essence of local culture. The programme will run continuously throughout the year, offering exclusive activities based on three core concepts of blending key life moments. These include:

  • Explorecation (Explore + Vacation) The Floating sound healing session invites guests to relax as their minds and bodies float on the water’s surface, allowing them to experience tranquillity through healing sound waves in the pool. The soothing sounds help release stress and promote both physical and emotional balance.
  • Workshopping (Work + Shopping) The COLOUR Your Life workshop will guide guests in discovering the right colours that enhance their charm, boost their aura, and brighten their appearance. The insights from this workshop can be applied to shopping for clothes, accessories, cosmetics, and selecting hair colours, helping participants feel confident and look their best in a new environment.
  • Foodventure (Food + Adventure) The Taste of Life experience takes guests on a cycling tour through the old city of Bangkok, where they can explore local flavours and sights. Along the way, participants will also learn photography techniques to add a colourful and fun dimension to their adventure.

In November 2024, the COLOUR Your Life workshop, specially curated by the Shama brand for its guests, will focus on helping individuals discover the colours that suit them best. This workshop applies the concept of personal branding through the psychology of colour selection. Based on the principle of the “Right Colour,” it aims to boost confidence, enhance charm, and create a lasting first impression by choosing the ideal colours that reflect one’s identity.

image2 14

The right colour choices can positively influence how individuals feel about themselves and how others perceive them. In addition to fostering connections among guests at Shama, this activity also empowers them to confidently integrate their lives into new environments, societies, and contexts. This aligns seamlessly with the Shama brand’s latest communication campaign, “Live Your Blended Life at Shama.”

Yuthachai Charanachitta, Chief Executive Officer of ONYX Hospitality Group, said, “The goal of the Shama Social Club is to support our residents—primarily long-stay guests—in adapting to their new environments while also engaging with local community residents. Additionally, the programme aims to connect Shama guests with one another, fostering a network of travellers who can share new insights and information.

Therefore, the activities of the Shama Social Club go beyond merely taking guests to popular tourist attractions; they are designed to help guests seamlessly blend into their new location while simultaneously experiencing the essence of the local culture surrounding their accommodation.”

SUVARNABHUMI — A Chinese woman wanted by Interpol for involvement in illegal lending operations was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport while overstaying her visa in Thailand.

Tourist Police officers, conducting a crackdown on crimes affecting the tourism industry, in cooperation with the Department of Land Transport, intercepted a suspicious Ford vehicle with Chiang Mai license plates. The driver, identified as Miss Mengna, failed to show a passport, only showing a personal driving permit.

Upon checking immigration records, authorities found that Miss Mengna had entered Thailand on September 10, 2023, with a visa valid until April 9, 2024, having stayed in the country for 218 days. While officers were preparing to charge her for visa violations, her suspicious behavior prompted further investigation.

She was wanted for her involvement in an illegal lending operation in China, where she allegedly participated in loan fraud schemes that involved misrepresenting loan amounts and using violent tactics for debt collection, including threats and physical assault against victims.

Miss Mengna was apprehended while attempting to pick up relatives at Suvarnabhumi Airport. She has been transferred to the Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station for legal proceedings, and authorities are coordinating with Interpol Region 2 for further action.

Trump Makes a Victor’s Return to Washington and Pledges a Smooth Transition of Power

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump made a victor’s return to Washington on Wednesday, visiting the White House for an Oval Office meeting with President Joe Biden and committing to a smooth transition of power as the president-elect moves quickly to build out his new administration.

Sitting in front of a crackling fire, the rivals shook hands in the Oval Office as reporters looked on. Biden called Trump “Mr. President-elect and former president” before settling on “Donald.”

“Congratulations,” the Democrat told the Republican. “I look forward to having, like they said, a smooth transition,” Biden said. “Welcome. Welcome back.”

Trump replied, “Thank you very much,” saying that “politics is tough. And it’s, in many cases, not a very nice world. But it is a nice world today, and I appreciate it very much.”

Neither man answered questions shouted by the media. At one point, Biden looked at Trump, who moved his head to the side and gave a small shrug but did not respond. Each was joined by his chief of staff for the private meeting that is a traditional part of the peaceful handoff of power, but a ritual that Trump declined to participate in four years ago after losing to Biden.

First lady Jill Biden greeted Trump upon his arrival at the White House and gave him a handwritten letter of congratulations for his wife, Melania Trump, who did not make the trip to Washington. The letter also expressed the first lady’s team’s readiness to assist with the transition.

As Trump met with Biden, Trump sent out a fundraising email to supporters saying that he “is inside the White House right now conducting a very important meeting.”

Trump had flown from Florida in the morning, joining up with billionaire Elon Musk for a morning session with House Republicans. That discussion came as Trump prepares for a potentially unified Republican government and sweep of power.

Back in Washington for the first time since his election victory, Trump told the GOP lawmakers, “It’s nice to win.”

He received a standing ovation from House GOP members, many of whom took cellphone videos of Trump as ran through their party’s victories up and down the ballot, in what would be, under the constitutional limits, his final presidential election.

“I suspect I won’t be running again unless you say he’s good we got to figure something else,” Trump said to laughter from the lawmakers.

It’s a stunning return to the seat of America’s government for the former president, who departed Washington in January 2021 a diminished, politically defeated leader after the attack on the Capitol. Today, he is preparing to come back to power with what he and his GOP allies see as a mandate for governance.

“He is the comeback king,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., before Trump’s arrival. “We owe him a great debt of gratitude.”

The private meetings, including his sit-down with Biden, put in stark relief the former president’s remarkable political rebound. The reemergence comes amid Republican congressional leadership elections — with the potential for him to place his imprint on the outcome.

Trump endorsed Johnson’s return to the speaker’s office with the president-elect saying he is with Johnson all the way, according to a person familiar with the remarks but not authorized to publicly discuss the private meeting.

AP24318580892193
Elon Musk, left, sits with Kelly Johnson, wife of House Speaker Mike Johnson of La., as President-elect Donald Trump speaks at a meeting of the House GOP conference, Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024, in Washington. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon)

Musk joining Trump on the return to Washington comes after the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has been spending much of his time at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s Florida estate, and participating in discussions as the incoming Trump administration prepares to transition from Biden’s.

Trump has named Musk to a government efficiency advisory role in his incoming administration. Some close to Trump and his team now see Musk as the second most influential figure in Trump’s immediate orbit, after Susie Wiles, the campaign manager who is Trump’s incoming chief of staff.

After his election win in 2016, Trump met with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office and called it “a great honor.” But he soon was back to heaping insults on Obama, including accusing his predecessor — without evidence — of having wire-tapped him during the 2016 campaign.

Four years later, Trump disputed his election loss to Biden, and he has continued to lie about widespread voter fraud that did not occur. He didn’t invite Biden, then the president-elect, to the White House and he left Washington without attending Biden’s inauguration. It was the first time that had happened since Andrew Johnson skipped Ulysses S. Grant’s swearing-in 155 years ago.

Biden insists that he’ll do everything he can to make the transition to the next Trump administration go smoothly. That’s despite having spent more than a year campaigning for reelection and decrying Trump as a threat to democracy and the nation’s core values. Biden then bowed out of the race in July and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him.

Traditionally, as the outgoing and incoming presidents meet in the West Wing, the first lady hosts her successor upstairs in the residence, But her office said Melania Trump wasn’t attending, saying in a statement that “her husband’s return to the Oval Office to commence the transition process is encouraging, and she wishes him great success.”

When Trump left Washington in 2021, even some top Republicans had begun to decry his role in helping incite a mob of his supporters that had staged the violent attack on the Capitol mere weeks earlier, trying to stop the certification of Biden’s election victory.

But his win in last week’s election completes a political comeback that has seen Trump once again become the unchallenged head of the GOP.

AP24318585174117

Wednesday’s trip was not the first time Trump has returned to the Capitol area since the end of his first term, though. Congressional Republicans hosted Trump over the summer, as Trump was again solidifying his dominance over the party.

In last week’s election, Republicans wrested the Senate majority from Democrats and are on the cusp of keeping control of the House, are in the midst of their own leadership elections happening behind closed doors Wednesday. Johnson has pulled ever-closer to Trump as he worked to keep his majority — and his own job with the gavel.

It’s unclear whether Trump will also visit the Senate, which is entangled in a more divisive closed-door leadership election in the three-way race to replace outgoing GOP Leader Mitch McConnell.

Trump’s allies are pushing GOP senators to vote for Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, who had been a longshot candidate challenging two more senior Republicans, Sen. John Thune of South Dakota and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, for the job.

Thaksin Returns to Political Stage Red Shirt Stronghold After 18 Years

UDON THANI — Facing renewed criticism from opponents about his stay on the “14th floor” of the Police Hospital instead of prison, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra took to the stage in Udon Thani, known as the “capital of the Red Shirts.”

In his first public address on stage in 18 years at Sri Nakaram Temple on November 13, Thaksin admitted feeling nervous and stuttering slightly, saying he needed to practice speaking again.

He emphasized issues that most concern local people: creating economic opportunities, addressing debt problems, and tackling drug issues. He also discussed his daughter’s work as Prime Minister and sought support from Udon Thani residents

Thaksin expressed concern about debt problems and poverty among Thai people, especially in provincial areas, referring to the saying “mother addicted to lottery, father to alcohol, children to drugs.” He warned people against excessive lottery gambling. He mentioned that PM Paetongtarn had told him, “Ing is worried about local residents’ heavy debt. Dad, help me think about how to solve this.”

He explained that the initial 10,000 baht payment to each person is necessary to help people get started, along with debt reduction and income increase initiatives, including agricultural income and opportunities for citizens.

Addressing allegations of controlling the PM and Pheu Thai Party, the former PM said, “I have no right to control my child because I respect her too much. Let her control me instead. She asks me to do this and that.”

Regarding education, he shared that PM Paetongtarn asked how to improve education for people. He advised changing Thai people’s attitudes about focusing solely on certificates, noting that in Bangkok, some people keep studying without getting smarter, as the world has changed and education alone is not enough.

“Today, we’re trying to attract investors to create jobs and increase income, but most importantly, we need to distribute prosperity to the provinces. While driving here, I saw many new shops, but it’s quiet because people lack purchasing power,” he said.

On drug issues, Thaksin declared “Thaksin is back” and expressed strong hatred for drug dealers. He connected this issue to police position buying, which he considers a terrible development during his 17-year absence from Thailand.

“PM Paetongtarn has said there will be no more money involved in police transfers, making drug control easier. She plans to work with Deputy PM Anutin Charnvirakul to address drug issues, and asks people not to become desensitized to this problem,” he added.

He concluded by praising his daughter, saying she will be a better PM than him due to her younger age. He asked for time to see changes and noted good unity among coalition parties.

After leaving the stage, when asked about the biggest political change in the past 17 years, Thaksin responded that things had deteriorated, saying politics needs to be stronger to solve national problems.

Regarding questions about his stay on the 14th floor of the Police Hospital, which has recently resurfaced, Thaksin merely nodded without answering whether he would appear before the parliamentary committee. He only said, “Don’t think about it, it’s over, it’s nothing.”

Thailand Takes First Step Toward Nuclear Power Plant Study

nuclear

BANGKOK — Thailand’s nuclear power plant project is about to make its debut as the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) plans to sign a MoU with the Office of Atoms for Peace on November 15. This agreement aims to establish a study committee to outline the operational framework, conduct public hearings and promote clean, low-cost energy.

The project will focus on public education and plans to build small plants with capacities under 300 MW. It will use advanced SMR ( Small Modular Reactor) technology, which is characterized by a high level of safety and a limited radius of less than one kilometer. The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) states that electricity costs could fall significantly from 4 baht to just 2 baht per unit.

Study Committee for Nuclear Power Plant

Poonpat Leesumbatipaiboon, Secretary General of the ERC, told “Prachachart Business” that nuclear power plants are a clean energy solution that is in high demand worldwide and that advances in safety technology make them safer than before.

On November 15, the ERC will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Office of Atoms for Peace to establish a committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Energy, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT), the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and other relevant agencies.

This committee will develop an operational framework, curricula and legal requirements while consulting the public. The ERC may regulate licenses and supervision similar to other power plants.

Thailand’s Power Development Plan (PDP) 2024 provides for the integration of nuclear power plants in the final part of the plan by 2037, contributing 1% to the 51 clean energy target.

SMR: A Viable Option for Thailand

The ERC Secretary General mentioned that Thailand is suitable for small nuclear power plants or Small Modular Reactors (SMR) with a capacity of less than 300 MW per module. SMRs are cost-effective, require little space and use prefabricated reactors, which offer more safety than on-site construction. The primary fuel, uranium, is not available in Thailand but can be imported from countries such as Mongolia, Ukraine and Australia.

The main problem is public awareness, as past disasters such as the Chernobyl nuclear power plant explosion in Ukraine and the Fukushima disaster in Japan are often cited as arguments against nuclear energy due to the population’s exposure to radiation.

EGAT’s Preparations

EGAT, responsible for the stability of the national power supply, has been researching the best alternative energy sources for Thailand. Recently, EGAT organized a media visit to a small nuclear power plant (SMR) in Hainan, China, where the central government aims to generate 50% of Hainan’s energy from clean sources by 2025. The aim is to make Hainan an “energy-free island” by 2030, with 54 coming from nuclear energy, 20 from solar energy and 15% from wind energy.

EGAT Governor Thepparat Theppitak explained that while global demand for green power is increasing, renewable energy sources have limitations in terms of stability and high cost. SMR technology, on the other hand, offers both a stable power supply and environmental friendliness, as it operates 24 hours a day and does not emit carbon dioxide.

Although SMRs have higher investment costs than thermal power plants (2-3 times), they offer a longer operating life (up to 60 years) and lower fuel costs, making them a worthwhile investment.

Community Acceptance Comes First

Nateekul Kriengchaiporn, a level 10 engineer at EGAT who specializes in nuclear power plants, explained that SMRs are modular reactors with a production capacity of less than 300 MW that are manufactured and assembled off-site. These units can be transported by truck or rail for installation.

There are currently no legal barriers preventing private companies from developing nuclear power plants in Thailand, but adequate nuclear infrastructure and public acceptance are essential for private sector participation. As a government agency, EGAT will play a crucial role in building the first nuclear infrastructure.

The Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) reported that Thailand’s electricity reserves will be 25.8% by April 30, 2024, down from 30.9% last year.

Uranium Found in Thailand but in Insufficient Quantities

Aditat Waseenon, director-general of the Department of Primary Industries and Mines, noted that information from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment indicates that various types of uranium ore are found scattered throughout Thailand. High-grade secondary uranium ore has been found at the Yip In Tsoi mine in Ban Thung Pho, Songkhla province, and at Ban Khun Thong Lang, Na San district, Surat Thani province.

Medium-grade uranium ore was found in the Tin Ped mine in Phang Nga province, while low-grade uranium is found in Ban Rai district, Uthai Thani province. Uranium ore was also discovered in sandstone in the Phu Wiang district of Khon Kaen province.

However, the quantities found are too small to justify mining. If exploration reveals economically viable and large uranium deposits in the future, exploration and mining licenses could be granted. There is hope that significant uranium deposits could eventually be discovered in the sandstone-rich regions of the Korat Plateau in Nakhon Ratchasima province, despite the currently small quantities.

Reducing Electricity Costs to 2 Baht per Unit

Isares Ratanadilok Na Phuket, vice president of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), explained that Thailand should consider nuclear power plants because of their stability compared to renewable energy sources, as nuclear power plants can operate 24 hours a day, similar to fossil fuels. However, these power plants should be small (SMR) or micro (MMR) reactors due to their lower cost and advanced technology, which could reduce electricity prices from the current level of about 4 baht to 2 baht per unit.

Suitable sites for nuclear power plants should be far away from communities, possibly on islands or underground, with strict safety standards. Although Thailand is not rushing into nuclear power, extensive studies and additional data are still needed, and the move away from natural gas as a fuel must be gradual. It is expected that a nuclear power plant can be commissioned within the next decade, similar to Germany, Japan and the United States.

Another promising alternative is hydrogen energy. However, any nuclear power plant project in Thailand must be led by EGAT so that it can increase its share of national electricity production from the current 32% to 50%, with 50% of the profits going back to the state.

BOI Yet to Grant Investment Incentives

Narit Therdsteerasukdi, Secretary General of the Board of Investment (BOI), explained that there are currently no investment incentives for electricity generation from nuclear energy or nuclear power plants. If there were to be such incentives, they would depend on the direction of the new energy development plan and government policy.

According to the BOI, nuclear power generation is currently not among the incentivized types of power generation in the utilities and basic services category. Incentives are currently only available for electricity generation from waste, renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, biomass, biogas, hydrogen and other forms of energy.

Japanese Funai’s Bankruptcy Leaves 831 Thai Workers Stranded

Funai
Laid-off Funai Thailand workers register for unemployment benefits across from the company premises in Pak Chong, Nakhon Ratchasima, November 13, 2024.

NAKHON RATCHASIMA —  In a sudden turn of events, 831 employees at Funai Thailand’s Pak Chong factory in Nakhon Ratchasima Province face unemployment without severance pay following their parent company’s bankruptcy in Japan.

The factory, which will permanently close its doors on November 14, 2024, initially announced a temporary one-month suspension of operations from November 1-30 due to raw material procurement issues.

The closure announcement came as a shock to employees, who were only informed on November 12 that the factory would permanently shut down two days later. The company has agreed to pay only the final month’s wages on November 13, leaving long-term employees without severance packages or compensation.

“We’ve dedicated 19 years of our lives to this company,” said Napapat Thundee and Punyasami Salakkham, two affected employees who earned approximately 17,000 baht monthly. “We don’t know how we’ll support our families without severance pay.”

More than 800 employees of Funai (Thailand) Company Limited gathered at the company on November 12, after being informed that they would receive their final wages on November 13, 2024.

Local authorities have mobilized to assist the affected workers. The Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Labor Office, along with various government agencies, has set up registration points opposite the factory on Pak Chong-Lamsamphung Road to help workers access unemployment benefits.

Wanicha Ketkaew, Head of the Pak Chong Branch of Nakhon Ratchasima Social Security Office, explained that they set up registration desks today to clarify benefits available to insured workers. For unemployment due to termination, the Social Security Office will pay 50% of wages for 180 days or until the insured person finds new employment.

For insured workers aged 55 and above, officials will guide them in applying for old-age pension benefits. As for those currently receiving child support of 800 baht monthly, they will be advised to register under Article 39 of the Social Security Act to continue receiving this benefit.

Senior Production Manager Apichat Sueathuean revealed that foreign executives cited financial inability to provide severance packages. “When foreign companies operate in Thailand, there should be guarantees protecting workers in case of closure,” he urged.

The parent company, Funai Electric, received court approval for its bankruptcy plan on October 24, 2024, with liabilities reaching ¥46.1 billion ($303.6 million). The Osaka-based manufacturer, founded in 1961, struggled with North American market decline and Chinese competition following the 2008 financial crisis.

Sirasit Loertduanglab, MP for Nakhon Ratchasima’s 14th district from the Pheu Thai Party, has pledged to raise this issue in parliamentary committees to address the workers’ plight.
