JAS Wins New English Premier League Rights, True Visions Steps Aside

The English Premier League

BANGKOK — The Premier League broadcasting rights in Thailand have changed hands after True Visions held the rights for 6 consecutive seasons. Recently, Jasmine International surprisingly won the bidding and partnered with Mono Group for broadcasting.

Jasmine International Public Company Limited (JAS) released a press kit on November 12 announcing that it has secured exclusive rights to broadcast the English Premier League in three countries: Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, including live broadcasts, reruns, and highlights starting from next season (2025/26).

“Creating excitement in the industry once again when ” JAS” successfully acquired the rights to broadcast “Premier League”, the most popular football league in the world,” it said.

JAS stated that it aims to broadcast content to over 25 million households across the three countries, targeting 3 million member accounts in the first year out of a total population of 96 million. This mega-project investment includes partnerships with Mono Group companies, such as MONOMAX and MONO 29 channel, as key marketing and distribution partners.

Dr. Soraj Asavaprapha, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Jasmine International, informed the Stock Exchange of Thailand that the company acquired the rights for Premier League and FA Cup matches for USD 559,980,000 (approximately THB 19.17 billion). The rights cover a 6-year period starting from the 2025/26 season.

He confirmed in an interview with Khaosod that their package pricing will definitely not be higher than the previous provider’s rates. The Premier League package will cost no more than 400 baht per month, and they are developing a system that will allow smooth streaming on up to 4 screens simultaneously.

“The price will certainly be lower than the current market rate, and we will implement a single-price policy regardless of viewing platform. We will maintain high-quality broadcasting with Full-HD picture quality using Auto bit rate technology that adjusts according to viewers’ internet speed and receiving devices,” he said.

Regarding viewing channels, besides the main platforms – MONOMAX (streaming platform) and MONO29 (free-to-air platform), Dr. Soraj stated that they plan to distribute through all networks and mobile operators, including App Store (iOS), Google Store, AIS, and TRUE to ensure maximum content accessibility for viewers.

For free-to-air TV, he confirmed there will definitely be live broadcasts, while the possibility of additional channels depends on future negotiations.

Meanwhile, Ong-art Prapakamol, Head of True Visions and Media at True Corporation, commented that True Visions participated in the bidding for 2025-2028 EPL rights with an appropriate offer but was outbid by another party.

“This bidding result will not significantly impact True Corporation’s business operations. True Visions confirms that subscribers can continue watching Premier League matches for the 2024/2025 season through all True platforms until the season ends in May 2025,” he stated.

The history of Premier League broadcasting in Thailand spans nearly three decades, with True Visions’ long-standing dominance being a significant part of Thailand’s football viewing culture since the mid-1990s.

  • True Visions (formerly IBC, then UBC) held rights from 1993-2001
  • ESPN held rights for 2001-2007 (with UBC as broadcaster)
  • True Visions regained rights for 2007-2013
  • CTH won rights for 2013-2016
  • BEIN Sports held rights for 2016-2020 (with True Visions as broadcaster)
  • True Visions has held rights from 2020-2025

The successful bid by Jasmine International and their partnership with Mono Group represents a major shift in Thailand’s sports media landscape, as they prepare to take the reins from the 2025/26 season onwards.

New Zealand’s Leader Formally Apologizes to Survivors of Abuse in State and Church Care

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon made a “formal and unreserved” apology in Parliament on Tuesday for the widespread abuse, torture and neglect of hundreds of thousands of children and vulnerable adults in care.

“It was horrific. It was heartbreaking. It was wrong. And it should never have happened,” Luxon said, as he spoke to lawmakers and a public gallery packed with survivors of the abuse.

An estimated 200,000 people in state, foster and faith-based care suffered “unimaginable” abuse over a period of seven decades, a blistering report released in July said at the end of the largest inquiry ever undertaken in New Zealand. They were disproportionately Māori, New Zealand’s Indigenous people.

“For many of you it changed the course of your life, and for that, the government must take responsibility,” Luxon said. He said he was apologizing for previous governments too.

In foster and church care — as well as in state-run institutions, including hospitals and residential schools — vulnerable people “should have been safe and treated with respect, dignity and compassion,” he added. “But instead, you were subjected to horrific abuse and neglect and in some cases torture.”

(Lawrence Smith/Stuff via AP )

The findings of the six-year investigation believed to be the widest-ranging of comparable probes worldwide were a “national disgrace,” the inquiry’s report said. New Zealand’s investigation followed two decades of such inquiries around the globe as nations struggle to reckon with authorities’ transgressions against children removed from their families and placed in care.

Of 650,000 children and vulnerable adults in New Zealand’s state, foster, and church care between 1950 and 2019 — in a country that today has a population of 5 million — nearly a third endured physical, sexual, verbal or psychological abuse. Many more were exploited or neglected.

“We will never know that true number,” Chris Hipkins, the leader of the opposition, told Parliament. “Many people entering into state and faith-based institutions were undocumented. Records were incomplete, they’ve gone missing, and in some cases, yes, they were deliberately destroyed.”

In response to the findings, New Zealand’s government agreed for the first time that historical treatment of some children in a notorious state-run hospital amounted to torture — a claim successive administrations had rejected.

“I am deeply sorry that New Zealand did not do better by you. I am sorry you were not believed when you came forward to report your abuse,” Luxon said. “I am sorry that many abusers were not made to face justice which meant that other people experienced abuse that could have been prevented.”

His government was working on 28 of the inquiry’s 138 recommendations, Luxon said, although he did not yet have concrete details on financial redress, which the inquiry had exhorted since 2021 and said could run to billions of dollars.

Luxon was decried by some survivors and advocates earlier Tuesday for not divulging compensation plans alongside the apology. He told Parliament a single redress system would be established in 2025.

He did not, however, suggest a figure for the amount the government expected to pay.

“There will be a big bill, but it’s nothing compared to the debt we owe those survivors and it must not be the reason for any further delay,” said Hipkins, the opposition leader.

Survivors began to arrive at Parliament hours before the apology, having won spots in the public gallery — which only seats about 200 people — by ballot. Some were reluctant to accept the state’s words, because they said the scale of the horror was not yet fully understood by lawmakers and public servants.

Jeering was so loud during an apology from the country’s solicitor-general that her speech was inaudible. Others called out or left the room in tears while senior public servants from relevant health and welfare agencies spoke before Luxon’s remarks.

Survivors invited to give speeches were required to do so before Luxon’s apology — rather than in response to it, said Tu Chapman, one of those asked to speak.

(Monique Ford/Stuff via AP)

“Right now I feel alone and in utter despair at the way in which this government has undertaken the task of acknowledging all survivors,” she told a crowd at Parliament.

The abuse “ripped families and communities apart, trapping many into a life of prison, incarceration, leaving many uneducated,” said Keith Wiffin — a survivor of abuse in a notorious state-run boys’ home. “It has tarred our international reputation as an upholder of human rights, something this nation likes to dine out on.”

The inquiry’s recommendations included seeking apologies from state and church leaders, among them Pope Francis. It also endorsed creating offices to prosecute abusers and enact redress, renaming streets and monuments dedicated to abusers, reforming civil and criminal law, rewriting the child welfare system and searching for unmarked graves at psychiatric facilities.

(Monique Ford/Stuff via AP)

Its writers were scathing about how widely the abuse — and the identities of many abusers — were known about for years, with nothing done to stop it.

“This has meant you have had to re-live your trauma over and over again,” said Luxon. “Agencies should have done better and must commit to doing so in the future.”

He did not concede that public servants or ministers in his government who had denied state abuse was widespread when they served in previous administrations should lose their jobs. Luxon has also rejected suggestions by survivors that policies he has enacted which disproportionately target Māori — such as crackdowns on gangs and the establishment of military-style boot camps for young offenders — undermine his government’s regret about the abuse.

Māori are over-represented in prisons and gangs. In 2023, 68% of children in state care were Māori, although they are less than 20% of New Zealand’s population.

“It’s not enough to say sorry,” said Fa’afete Taito, a survivor of violent abuse at another state-run home, and a former gang member. “It’s what you do to heal the wounds of your actions and make sure it never happens again that really counts.”

Ukrainian
Police raided and arrested the first two suspects at their accommodation in Takua Thung district, Phang Nga Province on Nov. 11, 2024.

PHUKETTourist Police officers and Kamala Police Station officers arrested four young foreign suspects who allegedly lured a Ukrainian tourist and robbed him of 250,000 U.S. dollars (8.56 million baht).

Initially, they were arrested at the Palm Inn Hotel in Khok Kloi, Takua Thung district, Phang Nga Province, and were sent to Phuket’s Kamala Police Station around 1 a.m. on November 11.

Mr. Arman, 21, an Armenian national; Mr. Alfred, 18, a Ukrainian national; Mr. Ruslan, 22, a Ukrainian national; and Mr. Mraz, 21, a Russian national, were wanted on a warrant issued by Phuket Provincial Court on November 10, 2024, for “armed robbery, unlawful detention or restraint of the liberty of another person, and coercing the victim to act against his will or for the benefit of the perpetrators or others.”

Tourist Police officers and Kamala Police Station officers arrest four young foreign suspects who allegedly lured a Ukrainian tourist and robbed him of 250,000 U.S. dollars, on Nov. 11, 2024.

The incident occurred on November 8 at around 10:45 p.m. when Mr. Viacheslav, a 23-year-old Ukrainian, was invited to a meeting in a room by Mr. Alfred, a friend. When he arrived at the entrance of the house, Mr. Arman accompanied him to the room where the incident took place.

Later, when Viacheslav went to the bathroom, he found two men there, both with faces covered with black cloth. One was wearing black long pants and a black long-sleeved shirt, the other a long-sleeved shirt and long pants. The two men attacked him and put him in a chokehold. All three perpetrators then tied his hands and feet with ropes and cable ties.

Arman threatened Viacheslav and forced him to transfer 500,000 U.S. dollars in cryptocurrency, saying they would break his fingers if he refused. During the threat, Mr. Arman held a hammer in his hand while the other masked men stood nearby holding sharp-edged weapons. After negotiation, the perpetrators reduced the demand to 250,000 U.S. dollars, equivalent to 8.56 million baht.

After the perpetrators confirmed that the money had been transferred, they tied him to the bed and threatened him not to tell anyone or report the incident. They then took belongings from the room and fled.

Viacheslav managed to free himself within about five minutes. He then went to reception and asked to photograph the passports of the room’s tenants, where he found that the room was registered to Arman and Alfred.

He advised the staff not to clean the room in order to preserve evidence. He then rode a motorcycle to Phuket airport to look for the three suspects but did not find them. He returned to his residence in Rawai, considered the risk to his own safety, and finally decided to report the incident to Kamala Police Station.

Mongolian
Thong Lo Police Station officers arrest two Mongolian suspects who had been pickpocketing tourists along Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok at 1 a.m. on November 11, 2024.

BANGKOKTwo out of three foreign suspects who entered Thailand on tourist visas and targeted tourists in Bangkok have been arrested. The two Mongolian nationals were found to have been changing their accommodation every 7 days.

At 1 a.m. on November 11, Thong Lo Police Station officers arrested Mr. Sodbayar, age 35, and Mr. Uyangabaatar, age 40, two Mongolian suspects who had been pickpocketing tourists.

The arrests followed a report from a female tourist who filed a complaint on the evening of November 8 after her wallet was stolen in front of a restaurant in Sukhumvit Soi 33/1. Police reviewed CCTV footage which clearly captured the entire incident.

The footage revealed three perpetrators who had committed multiple thefts. Police monitored the area, and when two of the suspects returned to commit another theft, they were arrested along Sukhumvit Road.

Returning to revive Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon District, this year’s Awakening Bangkok celebrates the theme “One Light, One Rises,” sparking inspiration and creativity to awaken the neighborhood and ignite the community from November 8-17, 2024.

Bangkok’s annual light and digital art festival, Awakening Bangkok 2024, returns for its 7th year with the theme “One Light, One Rises,” aiming to “revive the sleepy community and ignite the people’s inspiration.” Building on the success of its 2023 edition, this year’s festival returns to Phra Nakhon District for the second consecutive year, featuring 36 captivating light and digital art installations and activities to mesmerize Thai and international visitors. It is expected to draw at least as many visitors as in 2023, contributing to and stimulating the neighborhood’s economic growth.

Pongsiri Hetrakul, Festival Director of Awakening Bangkok, shares, “We believe that light and digital art not only revive historic neighborhoods but also inspire and ignite the community. That’s why Awakening Bangkok 2024 returns with the theme ‘One Light, One Rises’ to energize the neighborhood and inspire the people. Now in its 7th year and the 2nd consecutive year in Phra Nakhon District, this year’s festival builds on the success of 2023 and achieved record-breaking attendance. This year, we’ve expanded the route to include the Sam Yot area, creating four interconnected routes that explore the sub-themes of Sustainability, Prosperity, Inclusivity, and Positivity. The festival will feature 36 light and digital art installations and activities by Thai and international designers, many created by university students. Six key exhibition areas are Yodpiman River Walk and the Flower Market, Museum Siam, Saranrom Park, Phraeang Phuthorn, Bangkok City Hall, and Romaneenart Park.”

Awakening Bangkok 2024 marks another collaboration between the public and private sectors to bring a spectacular festival of light and color to the heart of Bangkok. This vibrant event aims to enhance the city’s appeal, stimulate the economy at both local and national levels—especially in Phra Nakhon District—and attract more tourists, encouraging increased spending throughout the festival. It reflects the transformative power of art as an accessible, limitless experience for all.

Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, remarks, “In previous years, the Awakening Bangkok light and color festival has been warmly embraced by both Bangkokians and tourists with a passion for arts and culture. This festival has become a key city event that supports Bangkok’s reputation as an internationally recognized city of arts and culture. It has become a landmark event that draws an increasing number of locals and tourists to the city each year, generating economic excitement and fostering integrated collaboration among cities, communities, and relevant agencies. Together, they drive Bangkok forward with vibrant arts and cultural activities.”

Archawan Kongkanant, Deputy Executive Director of Central Region at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), states, “Organizing the Awakening Bangkok event boosts tourism in Bangkok, which is a major destination in Thailand – especially in terms of arts and culture tourism that bridges historical and contemporary elements. Additionally, it inspires travel, facilitates citywide tourism, and distributes economic opportunities across all tourism products and target groups.

Puripan Bunnag, Senior Vice President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), comments, “Awakening Bangkok is a unique festival that showcases the city’s identity in a creative, accessible, and modern way. This year, the theme embraces equality, aligning with the government’s policy of promoting Bangkok as an inclusive destination. TCEB is confident that Awakening Bangkok 2024 will continue to thrive as a festival with the potential to stimulate the local economy and benefit communities. Additionally, it has the capacity to evolve into an internationally recognized event, serving as a key driver for Thailand’s growth as a prominent destination for hosting world-class festivals.”

“One of TCEB’s policies is to elevate Thai festivals to the global stage, in line with the national strategic plan to leverage cultural capital for economic growth,” said Puripan. “Awakening Bangkok is a festival with great potential, supported by both government and private sectors, and it continuously creates business opportunities. It also appeals to new-generation travelers with high purchasing power. As such, it is considered one of Thailand’s festivals to watch, with the potential to develop into an international event.”

Awakening Bangkok 2024 has also earned support from several private sector partners, including Toyota. Nutthorn Sinives, Vice President of Toyota Motor Thailand Company Limited, believes that supporting this annual light and digital art festival will bring even more vibrant nighttime scenes to the historic Phra Nakhon district, making it shine even brighter. As part of this, Toyota is showcasing the YARIS ATIV NIGHTSHADE in a new Cement Grey color, featuring a sporty, premium style, alongside a synchronized light and sound showcase “NIGHTSHADE to the Future,” created in collaboration with light artist Saturate Designs. The goal is to inspire everyone to embrace the theme of “Be Shadesetter.”

Chayaporn Lattisophonkul, Senior Marketing Director for Coca-Cola in Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, representing the Schweppes brand, says, “Schweppes is known for its diverse fruit-flavored soda beverages, offering a new and stylish experience for people who enjoy socializing and seeking excitement. This aligns perfectly with the target audience of Awakening Bangkok, a widely recognized festival both in Thailand and abroad. We are delighted to support this event for the second year.”

In its second year of support, Schweppes has created moments of joy with two new inspirational installations. The brand is also offering visitors the perfect sweet-and-sour experience with its new, sugar-free Blood Orange Pomegranate Soda, available for consumers to try throughout the event. Schweppes is presenting a special activity, #BORNSOCIALCLUBPARTY, a new secret party at the Schweppes installation at Yodpiman Riverwalk from November 15-17. This exclusive event will also feature two Schweppes brand ambassadors, who will join in creating unforgettable moments for fans and attendees on November 17, promising an even more special experience.

More special than in previous years, Awakening Bangkok 2024 features a collaboration with Finnish fashion and lifestyle brand Marimekko, showcasing their iconic digital art. Tanapong Chirapanidchakul, Chief Executive Officer of Tanachira Retail Corporation, notes, “Tanachira is truly honored to be part of Awakening Bangkok 2024. This year is particularly significant as it marks the 60th anniversary of Marimekko’s Unikko pattern. The vibrant floral design is not only a symbol of the brand but also represents art with deep meaning, reflecting the simplicity of nature, culture, and a unique way of life. To mark this special occasion, Marimekko has partnered with Alternate Reality Studio to present the iconic Unikko pattern in a digital format, projected onto the surface of the Museum Siam building, one of Thailand’s culturally significant buildings. This projection mirrors similar displays of the Unikko pattern on notable landmarks across the globe, celebrating the seamless connection between art and culture beyond borders.”

Tanapong also said, “Participating in Awakening Bangkok 2024 aligns with Tanachira’s mission to support art and culture. I believe this year’s event will be another important step in inspiring creativity and providing participants with the opportunity to experience art in new dimensions, all while immersing themselves in the rich cultural atmosphere of Bangkok, the hub for Thailand’s art and culture.”

Another major sponsor, the restaurant brand SEE FAH, is excited to help light up the historic neighborhood in Phra Nakhon District during Awakening Bangkok 2024.

image4 4

Dr. Nitta Rachjaibun Nuntakwang, Chief Eating Officer (CEO) of SEE FAH Group, mentioned, “This is a special opportunity for us, as it marks the first time SEE FAH has supported a festival filled with uniqueness and charm. Awakening Bangkok is organized to revitalize the old neighborhood, with the belief that light and digital art can not only breathe new life into the area but also ignite inspiration and restore vibrancy. Similarly, SEE FAH has been adding the color of deliciousness to our customers for over 88 years. In this event, SEE FAH is excited to bring a fresh new color and comfort to everyone. From Hit to Boycott: How a Cat Scene Changed Thai Drama ‘Mae Yua’

The black cat at the center of 'Mae Yua' controversy appears healthy in director's November 9 social media post, following backlash over its sedation during filming

BANGKOK — A controversial scene involving a sedated cat has derailed Thailand’s most anticipated period drama of 2024, transforming “Mae Yua” from a potential industry savior to the center of a heated animal welfare debate.

The drama, which stars Thai-Belgian actress Davika Hoorne and streams on both Channel One31 and Netflix, faced intense backlash following its fifth episode. The scene in question depicted a black cat being drugged, complete with realistic portrayals of vomiting and convulsions, prompting viewers to launch the viral hashtag #BanMaeYua.

Despite director Sant Srikaewlor sharing update pictures of the cat’s well-being on November 9 and claiming expert supervision throughout the process, public outrage has not subsided.

Veterinary experts have since weighed in on the controversy, warning that any form of animal sedation carries significant health risks. “Sedation can dangerously affect respiratory and circulatory systems, with particular risks of aspiration during vomiting,” explained one veterinarian who spoke out on social media.

Channel One31 then issued an apologetic statement on November 10, defending their use of a professional animal modeling company with over a decade of experience. “The cat’s owner supervised all filming procedures,” the channel stated, emphasizing their commitment to animal safety. However, this explanation failed to quell public outrage.

The incident has caught the attention of Thailand’s animal rights community. Roger Lohanan, President of the Thai Animal Rights Association, has filed a formal complaint with the Department of Livestock Development, citing possible violations of animal cruelty laws under Section 20 of the Criminal Code.

Critics have pointed to Hollywood’s more humane approaches to similar scenes. The recent film “Anatomy of a Fall,” for instance, achieved comparable effects through a combination of CGI and careful training, even earning its canine performer the prestigious Palm Dog award.

Before this controversy, “Mae Yua” or “The Empress of Ayodhaya” had been positioned as a potential renaissance for Thailand’s television industry, which has struggled against declining viewership and digital competition. The series’ high production values and star power had initially generated significant buzz, with many viewing it as a possible turning point for traditional Thai television.

The ongoing controversy raises broader questions about animal welfare standards in Thai entertainment and may lead to industry-wide changes in how productions handle scenes involving animals.

Cyber police have arrested a Chinese national accused of running a massive international scam operation from properties connected to a local deputy mayor in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province on Nov. 10, 2024.

The arrest follows a March 29, 2024 operation where cyber police, along with DSI officers, Police Region 8 investigators, immigration police, and NBTC officials – over 100 personnel in total – raided 4 locations in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The operation targeted a major Chinese call center gang that had been scamming Thai, Chinese, Russian, and Japanese victims.

During that raid, authorities arrested 90 suspects, including Chinese nationals and both Thai and foreign accomplices. Evidence seized included 192 computers, 854 mobile phones and fake SIM cards, 22 routers, and 342 money mule bank accounts.

Further investigation revealed connections to Ms. Rawadee, age 51, also known as “Jae Lek,” the Deputy Mayor of Chandi Municipality, who owned the property where the Chinese call center group operated and benefited from rental payments.

Jiang, as the Chinese leader, was responsible for transporting Chinese nationals between their accommodation at Chandi Grand Ville village and Jin Heng Hotel using an orange Ford vehicle with Bangkok license plates.

Initially, police have detained the suspect and transferred him to tourist police investigators for legal proceedings.
