BANGKOK — Two out of three foreign suspects who entered Thailand on tourist visas and targeted tourists in Bangkok have been arrested. The two Mongolian nationals were found to have been changing their accommodation every 7 days.
At 1 a.m. on November 11, Thong Lo Police Station officers arrested Mr. Sodbayar, age 35, and Mr. Uyangabaatar, age 40, two Mongolian suspects who had been pickpocketing tourists.
The arrests followed a report from a female tourist who filed a complaint on the evening of November 8 after her wallet was stolen in front of a restaurant in Sukhumvit Soi 33/1. Police reviewed CCTV footage which clearly captured the entire incident.
The footage revealed three perpetrators who had committed multiple thefts. Police monitored the area, and when two of the suspects returned to commit another theft, they were arrested along Sukhumvit Road.
Investigation revealed that both suspects had entered Thailand on tourist visas and were renting rooms in Phra Khanong and Bang Chak areas. They would change their accommodation every 7 days to target new victims.
Both suspects confessed to the most recent theft. They have been initially charged with nighttime theft, which carries a penalty of 1-7 years imprisonment and a fine of 20,000-140,000 baht. They will also be required to compensate victims for stolen property.
The third suspect remains at large, and investigative officers are working to track them down.
