
BEIJING, China — A bipedal humanoid robot suffered a spectacular crash during a running practice session ahead of the World Humanoid Robot Games, dubbed the “Robot Olympics,” which are scheduled to begin on 22 August in Beijing, China.
During a test run, the robot accelerated at full speed along a track before slamming into a padded wall at the end of the course. The impact was so severe that the robot appeared to nearly “break in half,” with sparks shooting from its frame.
A controller standing near the scene could only watch with a visibly disappointed expression as the robot crashed.
Video of the incident shows the robot reaching an impressive speed but failing to slow down as it approached the end of the track. It hit the padded barrier with considerable force, flipped onto its back and then began emitting sparks.
The footage quickly went viral on social media, with netizens poking fun at the robot’s dramatic crash and tumble, with many saying the scene looked more like something from a cartoon than a test of cutting-edge technology.
Previously, videos had shown other robots running off the track and losing their balance before crashing into walls. Organizers subsequently installed padded barriers to help reduce the impact and potential damage.
However, the padding appeared unable to fully protect this robot from the force of the collision.
One social media user joked: “From zero to sparks in 15 seconds. Truly beautiful.”
Another wrote: “Honey, wake up! A new hilarious robot moment just dropped.”
A third compared the robot’s performance to someone who had a Starbucks Venti Nitro Cold Brew with two extra shots of espresso in the morning, only for the caffeine to wear off after lunch.
Another user called the incident one of the funniest things they had ever seen, saying the robot’s posture while accelerating looked like a cartoon character before it appeared to slip backward “like it had stepped on a banana peel,” followed by a burst of sparks.
“I could watch this video on repeat for hours,” the user wrote.
The World Humanoid Robot Games, first held in 2025, return this year with an expanded schedule featuring 50 events. Organizers expect 666 teams to take part, bringing more than 2,056 robots to compete.
The event is regarded as an important platform for showcasing advances in humanoid robotics.
