Attack on Central Israel Injures 11 As Iran’s Leader Promises a Punishing Response

JERUSALEM (AP) — An attack on a central Israeli town early Saturday injured 11 people as Iran’s supreme leader vowed a punishing response to Israel’s attack last week.

The predawn strike on Tira, which followed air raid sirens across central Israel, was one of several barrages fired from Lebanon early in the day. Many of the projectiles were intercepted by Israeli air defenses, while others landed in unpopulated areas.

The Magen David Adom emergency service said 11 people were hurt by shrapnel and glass shards in a direct strike on a building in Tira, a predominantly Israeli Arab town. Three were in moderate condition, while the others suffered milder injuries.

Footage showed significant damage to the roof and top floor of the three-story building and cars below.

Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group said on Saturday that it had used missiles and explosive drones to target military and intelligence facilities in northern and central Israel. It claimed responsibility for firing missiles toward the Israeli military’s Unit 8200 base in Glilot, on the edge of Tel Aviv, and for firing rockets toward military facilities in Zvulun. Hezbollah also said it had targeted central Israel’s Palmachim Air Base with explosive drones, saying they “scored precise hits on targets.”

Israel’s military did not confirm whether any of the three Hezbollah targets had been hit and said it had no comment on the group’s claims.

Hezbollah said the Saturday dawn missile attack directed at Glilot was in retaliation for the “massacres” that are being committed by Israel. Tira, is about 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) from Glilot.

Tamar Abdel Hai, a resident of Tira, said that the attack was frightening. “I call upon all the leaders in the Arab world and the leaders in Israel and to everyone who can help to end this war. It’s enough,” he said.

Hezbollah also said that its fighters fired salvos of rockets into northern Israeli towns including Dalton, Yesud HaMa’ala and Bar Yohai.

Israeli media showed images of damage reportedly caused by a drone that hit a factory north of Nahariya. The army said several drones crossed from Lebanon into Israel, one was intercepted but “fallen targets were identified in the area.”

Meanwhile, an Israeli airstrike on a southern suburb of Beirut on Saturday afternoon wounded 11 people, the Lebanese Health Ministry said. Israeli planes resumed strikes on on the southern suburb of Dahiyeh overnight Friday, following four day lull in the capital.

In a separate incident, a Lebanese ship captain was taken away by a group of armed men who landed on a coast north of Beirut, Lebanese authorities said Saturday. Officials said the incident occurred Friday at dawn and authorities are investigating whether Israel was involved.

There has been no immediate Israeli comment on the matter. In the past, Israel has carried out commando operations deep inside Lebanon to kidnap or kill Hezbollah and Palestinian officials.

Iran threatens more attacks

The early Saturday attacks may be only a precursor to a more severe strike against Israel.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, on Saturday threatened Israel and the U.S. with a punishing response over attacks on Iran and its allies following Israel’s Oct. 26 airstrikes that targeted Iran’s military bases and other locations.

“The enemies, whether the Zionist regime or the United States of America, will definitely receive a crushing response to what they are doing to Iran and the Iranian nation and to the resistance front,” Khamenei said in video released by Iranian state media.

A further attack by Iran, which has already launched two direct attacks against Israel this year, could push the wider Middle East closer to a broader conflict. Israel is already battling the Iran-backed militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The fight against Hezbollah has weakened the group but has also taken a heavy toll on southern Lebanon and other parts of the country.

On Friday, Israel launched dozens of intense airstrikes across Lebanon’s northeastern farming villages, killing at least 52 people and wounding scores more, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported.

Since the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah erupted in 2023, more than 2,897 people have been killed and 13,150 wounded in Lebanon, according to a Health Ministry update early Friday. United Nations agencies estimate that Israel’s ground invasion and bombardment of Lebanon has displaced 1.4 million people.

Residents of Israel’s northern communities near Lebanon, roughly 60,000 people, have also been displaced for more than a year.

Israeli strikes in Gaza kill at least 42 people in 24 hours

Israel has also stepped up its offensive against Hamas’ remaining fighters in Gaza, raising concerns about humanitarian conditions for civilians still there.

A series of Israeli strikes on Nuseirat, a refugee camp in central Gaza, killed at least 42 people, more than a half of them women and children, in 24 hours, Dr. Marwan Abu Naser, director of Al-Awda Hospital that received the casualties, told The Associated Press. A further 150 were wounded, he said.

The World Health Organization began a scaled-down polio vaccination campaign on Saturday, giving second doses to at-risk children only in Gaza City after providing first doses in multiple parts of northern Gaza, which has seen intense Israeli bombardment.

The second round was initially set to start Oct. 23 but was postponed due to lack of access amid intense Israeli bombing, mass evacuation orders and a lack of assurance about humanitarian pauses.

Israel’s war in Gaza has killed more than 43,000 Palestinians since Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas militants killed roughly 1,200 people in Israel and took some 250 hostages back to Gaza. Health officials inside Hamas-run Gaza do not distinguish between civilians and combatants, but say more than half of the dead in the enclave are women and children.

Pattaya officers take the German suspect in a hit-and-run at a police checkpoint to the hospital for alcohol testing on November 2, 2024.

PATTAYA — A German national faces four serious charges after crashing his motorcycle through an alcohol checkpoint in Pattaya and severely injuring a police officer early Saturday morning. The suspect initially fled the scene but was later captured

The incident occurred at 2:20 AM on November 2nd on Second Jomtien Road, Nong Prue Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province. A foreign man riding a Honda CB 650 motorcycle with Bangkok registration plates crashed through an alcohol checkpoint, hitting Police Lieutenant Rapeepat Prommin, a deputy traffic inspector at Pattaya City Police Station. The officer was thrown and suffered severe head injuries upon impact with the ground, while the motorcycle fell over.

Rescue workers at the checkpoint provided immediate first aid to the injured officer before rushing him to the hospital. During this time, the foreign suspect managed to escape, fleeing into nearby bushes.

Subsequently, over 50 officers from Pattaya City Police Station surrounded the wooded area. Motorcycle patrol units and plainclothes investigation officers were positioned at potential escape routes.

The suspect eventually emerged from the woods and walked into the sea at Jomtien Beach, apparently attempting to disguise himself. However, officers who had witnessed the earlier incident recognized him and arrested him as he came out of the water. He was then taken to the Dong Tan Curve Police Substation for alcohol testing.

The motorcycle involved in the Pattaya checkpoint crash that seriously injured a police officer is being held as evidence.

The man refused to provide his name or consent to an alcohol test. Officers took him to the hospital for testing, where results showed his blood alcohol content exceeded legal limits. Police identified him from the motorcycle rental documentation as Mr. Christopher, age 30, who was confirmed to be the same person who hit the officer.

CCTV footage from the checkpoint clearly captured the incident, which was handed over to investigators as evidence for legal proceedings.

Mr. Christopher faces four serious charges:

  1. Drunk driving and reckless driving causing physical and mental harm to others and property damage
  2. Failing to provide assistance or notify authorities immediately after an accident, and fleeing the scene
  3. Violating traffic officer orders under the Land Traffic Act
  4. Resisting arrest and obstructing officers in their duties

Regarding the injured officer’s condition, doctors at Pattaya City Hospital are keeping him under observation for 3-4 days due to minor brain bleeding and a minor fracture in the posterior nasal cavity. If his condition doesn’t improve, he will be transferred to Chonburi hospital.

Thai Trafficking Boss Arrested After Deadly Rohingya Transport

CCTV footage shows the enclosed cargo truck used to smuggle Rohingya migrants through Thailand's Chumphon Province en route to the Malaysian border on October 17, 2024.

BANGKOKAfter more than two weeks of pursuit, Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division police have arrested the third suspect in the shocking case where 26 Rohingya were transported in a enclosed pickup truck, resulting in 3 deaths in mid-October.

Somkiat, or ‘Bang Golf’, age 30, the leader of the Rohingya smuggling team, was arrested in Kaeng Hang Maeo district, Chanthaburi Province on November 1. His two team members, Nattawut and Pongpisanu, both 20 years old, were arrested while hiding in Bangkok. All were transferred to Lang Suan Police Station in Chumphon Province.

Police officers arrest Somkiat, or ‘Bang Golf’, age 30, the leader of the Rohingya smuggling team, in Kaeng Hang Maeo district, Chanthaburi Province on November 1, 2024.

Previously, police arrested two other members of the operation: Seksan, age 21, the driver, and Pitak, age 30, who was riding with him, on Petchkasem Road in Cha-am district, Phetchaburi province. All individuals were charged with jointly assisting illegal aliens to enter the Kingdom to avoid arrest.

On November 1, Pol. Maj. Gen. Saruti Khwaengsopha, Commander of Anti-Trafficking in Persons Division, stated that this trafficking network had tens of millions of baht circulating in their accounts. Somkiat was the gang leader who took orders from investors before directing his subordinates to drive and pick up Rohingya from the Rom Klao area to transport them to the southern region, planning to cross into Malaysia, but the tragic incident occurred first.

The investigation revealed that when Somkiat learned his subordinates were arrested, he quickly fled Bangkok to Khun Song subdistrict, Kaeng Hang Maeo district, Chanthaburi Province, in a national park forest area bordering a neighboring country, which was difficult to track. However, officers eventually managed to locate and arrest him.

Somkiat confessed that he received payment from brokers to transport Rohingya to Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, before waiting to cross into Malaysia, with a fee of 3,000 baht ($88.5) per person. The transportation method involved using a sealed pickup truck that was narrow with little ventilation to avoid detection.”

26 Rohingya were smuggled by human traffickers in a enclosed pickup truck and hidden in a forest near the foot of Wat Sekharam mountain in Lang Suan District, Chumphon Province, approximately 2 kilometers from Petchkasem Road. Monks from Wat Sekharam discovered them on the morning of October 17.

Three of them died of suffocation while others were in a weakened state due to lack of oxygen from sitting in the nearly airless truck over a long distance.

The survivors told police they were all brought from Myanmar’s Rakhine State and smuggled into Thailand en route to Malaysia, where they have relatives. They hoped to find employment and improve their lives. The entire process takes nearly a month, with each person paying approximately 150,000 Thai baht ($4,500).

Musk Tests the Role of Money in U.S. Politics with Multimillion-Dollar Effort to Back Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — Next week’s presidential election isn’t just a referendum on Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. It’s also a measure of the influence the world’s richest man wields over American democracy.

Elon Musk, the South African-born tech and business titan, has spent at least $119 million mobilizing Trump’s supporters to back the Republican nominee. His social media platform, X, has become a firehose of pro-Trump propaganda. And he’s playing a starring role in Trump-style rallies in critical battleground states.

All the while, he’s coming under growing scrutiny. He skipped a hearing on Thursday in a lawsuit over his effort to dole out millions of dollars to registered voters, a giveaway legal experts liken to vote buying. He’s being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. And The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Musk regularly communicates with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a potential national security risk because SpaceX, his aerospace company, holds billions of dollars worth of contracts with NASA and the Department of Defense.

Musk is hardly the only person whose megawealth places him at the nexus of politics, business and foreign policy. But few are working so publicly for a single candidate as Musk, whose expansive business ties and growing bravado pose a vexing test of one unelected person’s political power. His stature is perhaps one of the most tangible consequence of the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision, which eliminated many limits on political giving.

“This is definitely an election brought to you by Citizens United,” said Daniel I. Weiner, the director of elections and government at the Brennan Center for Justice, who added that the phenomenon was bigger that just Musk. “What this is really about is a transformation of our campaign finance system to one in which the wealthiest donors are playing a central role.”

Musk did not respond to a request for comment made through his attorney. Tesla, his electric car company, and X did not respond to inquiries. SpaceX disputed parts of The Journal’s reporting in a statement and said it continues to work in “close partnership with the U.S. Government.”

Musk’s recent conversion to ‘Dark MAGA’

Musk’s conversion to a self-described “Dark MAGA” Trump warrior is a recent one. In the past, he donated modest sums to both Republicans and Democrats, including $5,000 to Hillary Clinton in 2016, records show. He didn’t contribute to Trump’s political efforts until this year, according to federal campaign finance disclosures.

He was all in once he did.

Musk is now leading America PAC, a super political action committee that is spearheading Trump’s get-out-the-vote effort. As a newcomer to politics, there have been growing pains.

Over the summer, America PAC struggled to reach its voter contact goals. Musk brought in a new team of political consultants, Generra Peck and Phil Cox, who worked on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis ’ losing Republican presidential primary bid.

On paper, the numbers have improved. But Republican officials, operatives and activists say in some critical places it’s been difficult to tell how active the PAC’s ground effort has been.

The PAC’s presence is not perceptible in rural Georgia, according to three Republican strategists who are closely monitoring the ground game in the battleground state. For example, America PAC has shown little evidence of leaving literature behind on doorsteps, as is common when a voter is not home, especially in remote places, the three people said.

There are also indicators Musk, a tech innovator, has been taken advantage of at his own game. In Nevada, three other people familiar with America PAC’s efforts said hired canvassers paid tech-savvy operatives to digitally manipulate an app used to track their progress — appearing to falsify their data so they could get paid for work that they did not do. Canvassers are typically paid by the number of doors that they knock on.

There are signs the practice wasn’t limited to Nevada. One person warned America PAC leadership weeks ago that canvasing data from multiple states showed signs that it had been falsified, but their concerns were not acted on, according to two people with knowledge of the matter.

The individuals, like others who provided details about Musk’s political operation, insisted on anonymity to discuss the matter out of fear of retribution.

Musk has become frustrated with his PAC

Musk has become frustrated with the inner workings of his political organization and has brought in private sector associates, including Steve Davis, president of the Boring company, Musk’s tunnel building company, according to three people with knowledge of the move. Davis’ role with America PAC was first reported by The New York Times.

A person close to the PAC disputed that the group had been taken advantage of, suggesting it was a conspiracy theory based on a poor understanding of how political canvassing works. The person insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the innerworkings of the PAC.

Musk has more riding on the election than just bragging rights.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the main agency that regulates Tesla, has repeatedly proved to be a thorn for the electric car maker run by Musk, which is the primary source of his wealth. The agency is overseeing more than a dozen recalls, some that Tesla resisted. It has also opened investigations that have raised doubts about Musk’s claims that Tesla is close to deploying self-driving vehicles, a key expectation of shareholders and a major driver of Tesla’s lofty share price.

Earlier this year Tesla disclosed that the Department of Justice and the SEC have requested and subpoenaed information about “Full Self-Driving” capability, vehicle functionality, data privacy and other matters.

The social media platform X is another Musk company that has drawn interest of the Biden administration. The Federal Trade Commission has probed Musk’s handling of sensitive consumer data after he took control of the company in 2022, but has not brought enforcement action. The SEC has an ongoing investigation of Musk’s purchase of the social media company.

Many of these troubles, which Musk blames President Joe Biden and Democrats for, could go away if Trump is elected. The former president has mused that Musk could have a formal role in a future Trump administration that focuses on government efficiency — an enormous conflict of interest given Musk’s companies vast dealings with the government.

Udon Thani Boy Heartbroken After Losing Father in Israel on His 11th Birthday

Israel
Bun-paeng Wannasai and her grandson Gave, the mother and son of Akkaphon Wannasai, 29, who lost his life in Israel, talk about how they miss him at their home in Udon Thani province on Nov. 1, 2024.

UDON THANI — A woman from Udon Thani received heartbreaking news that her son, who was working in Israel, was killed by a rocket attack on her grandson’s birthday. The 11-year-old boy had just sent a voice message asking for his father’s birthday wishes.

Akkaphon Wannasai, age 29, nickname Jo, had traveled to an area near the Lebanese border on October 31 with three other Thai workers – one from Buriram and two from Nakhon Ratchasima. Their Israeli employer had obtained permission for 1-2 hours of work, but they all lost their lives there.

Neighbors who heard the tragic news came to express condolences to Bun-paeng Wannasai, age 56, Akkaphon’s mother, at Village 3, Ban Dong Mak Lot, Mueang Phia Sub-district, Kut Chap District, Udon Thani Province on November 1.

Provincial labor officials visited to offer support and gather information about providing assistance.

Bun-paeng shared that her son had been working in Israel for 4 years as a farmer in fruit orchards and apple picking. He would visit home every year. During the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, he had returned home before going back to work in Israel.

On October 31, which was his son Gave’s 11th birthday, when Gave didn’t receive a birthday call from his father, he sent a voice message saying: “Dad, why haven’t you called me? If you’re working, please just let me know. It’s my birthday today – why haven’t you given me even one word of blessing to make me happy?” But Akkaphon never read this message.

Instead, her son’s senior colleague called Bun-paeng to inform her that Jo and his employer had been killed in an explosion. Gave responded briefly, saying only “My father died on my birthday.”

udon israel died2
Bun-paeng Wannasai shows a picture of herself with her son Akkaphon, who lost his life in Israel, at her home on Nov. 1, 2024.

“I was shocked when I heard the news and cried until I had no tears left. He loved his mother very much and didn’t want me to work hard. He said from now on I would live comfortably. He said he would take care of his father and me, video calling us every day to talk with his only son. He asked me to be patient, saying he would return home next year,” Bun-paeng said.

She added that her son was always hardworking, never going out for leisure while in Thailand. Working abroad, he saved money to build her a house and buy his father a car. He was planning to save more money before returning home permanently, but his life was cut short.

Government agencies have now informed her of her rights and expressed condolences. She wishes to receive her son’s body for funeral rites at home but must wait for confirmation from the embassy about when the body will arrive.

“If my son’s spirit can hear, I want to tell Jo that he is my heart. I don’t know how long I can go on. No matter how much I think about it, I cannot bring my son’s life back,” she said tearfully.

Thai-Chinese Interpreter Couple Surrenders in Thai Police Extortion Case

interpreter
Investigators at Thung Song Hong Police Station question Mr. Yun and Ms. Apatsara, both interpreters, for 10 hours after they turned themselves in on November 1, 2024.

BANGKOK — A husband and wife who worked as interpreters have surrendered in connection with a Thai police extortion case. The case involves police officers attempting to extort $10 million USDT from a Chinese-Vanuatu businessman, though they only obtained $165K. Nine police officers and one civilian have already been arrested.

On November 1, investigators at Thung Song Hong Police Station questioned Mr. Yun and Ms. Apatsara for 10 hours after they turned themselves in during the morning, accompanied by their lawyer.

Both suspects denied the charges, although they admitted to being present during the October 16 police search of a Chinese-Vanuatu businessman’s house in Bang Phli, Samut Prakan. They claimed they were only there to provide translation services and weren’t involved in any extortion attempts. They reserved further details for court testimony.

Their lawyer, Krit, revealed that his clients surrendered following arrest warrants for supporting extortion (Section 149), which carries a maximum death penalty sentence. He explained that legal representation was necessary during questioning.

Three cyber police officers in extortion case surrendered on October 28, 2024.

Initially, the clients admitted to being contacted by police officers but couldn’t identify which department they were from. The two interpreters had previously assisted the Tourist Police with translations, though the duration of their service is unclear. Their prior work relationship with the accused police officers is still under investigation.

The wife, who is Thai, can speak Chinese and would communicate with her Chinese husband who would then relay messages to the victim. The clients maintain they never requested 300 million baht in benefits nor did they ask for 700,000 baht in exchange for revealing the names of the police officers involved in the search.

After 10 hours of interrogation, relatives posted 600,000 baht bail for both interpreters. The couple was granted bail, similar to the 9 police officers and 1 civilian who were released earlier.

Meanwhile, Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kitt-rat Panpetch ordered Metropolitan Police Chief Pol. Lt. Gen. Thiti Saengswang to expedite the investigation and arrests. The suspects’ departments were instructed to implement strict disciplinary and criminal measures, with orders to thoroughly investigate all involved parties and report findings promptly.

The Technology Crime Investigation Division 1 has established a fact-finding committee and transferred the accused officers from their positions to prevent interference with evidence during the 30-day investigation period.

Taiwanese Driver Recounts His Narrow Escape During Typhoon Kong-rey; Thai Woman Died

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A ride-hailing driver recounted Friday how he had narrow escape when a huge tree smashed onto his vehicle as Typhoon Kong-rey swept over Taiwan, also sweeping away metal roofs and sending landslides onto roads and railway tracks and into houses.

Song Zi-jie had just dropped off riders in Taipei, the capital city, and was stopped at a red light on Thursday night when a tree was uprooted and fell squarely onto the passenger compartment of his car. He felt the roof hit his head and reclined his seat but couldn’t open the rear door. He lay there until police found him.

“I was so frightened that I didn’t know what to do,” said Song, who wasn’t injured despite the extensive damage to his vehicle. “It took me a while to return to normal.”

Two people died, four people are missing and 580 others were injured by Kong-rey in Taiwan. It weakened to a tropical storm after leaving the island but was still bringing heavy rain and windy conditions to Shanghai and nearby parts of China’s east coast on Friday.

Kong-rey, which is a Cambodian name, was heading northeast along the coast with winds of 83 kilometers (52 miles) per hour and could make landfall in Zhejiang province before veering back out to sea, the National Meteorological Center said.

Zhejiang authorities evacuated about 280,000 people and opened more than 10,000 emergency shelters ahead of the storm, the official Xinhua News Agency said. Both Zhejiang and neighboring Fujian province also suspended multiple ferry routes.

In Taiwan, a Czech couple who had gone missing while hiking in the mountains were found and airlifted out of Taroko National Park by helicopter on Friday. They told Taiwanese TV network EBC that they hadn’t been aware of the approaching typhoon but were able to call for help with their mobile phones and mostly stayed in their tent until rescuers arrived.

The two fatalities in Taiwan were a man hit by a utility pole that fell over when a tree dragged down nearby power lines in Taipei and a Thai woman who was in a small truck that was hit by a tree.

Workers cut and cleared up fallen trees in Taipei on Friday, while schools and offices largely reopened and public services were gradually restored across Taiwan.

The typhoon passed north of the Philippines earlier in the week, prompting fresh evacuations just days after devastating Tropical Storm Trami killed at least 145 people.

Intense rainfall and flooding caused in part by Trami also killed seven people in China and eight people in Vietnam this week, Xinhua reported. The deaths in China were in Hainan province, a southern island known for its beach resorts.

Thai Canned Tuna Exports Hit $1.85B as Global Conflicts Boost Demand

BANGKOK — Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, Director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) of the Thai Ministry of Commerce, announced on Friday the export statistics for Thai canned tuna for the first nine months of 2024 (January – September).

The export value reached 1.851 billion dollars, approximately 65.98 billion baht, an increase of 20.73 percent compared to the same period last year.

Exports increased in all regions, particularly in North and South America, Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The Americas region led the way with an export value of 632 million dollars, an increase of 17.90 percent, driven by the economic recovery in the US and Canada, Thailand’s major markets in this region.

The key markets include: United States: 402.39 million dollars, up 15.41 percent, followed by Canada: 102.43 million dollars, up 40.57 percent and Chile: 47.48 million dollars, up 6.01 percent.

The Asia and Middle East region recorded an export value of 618 million dollars, an increase of 14.98 percent. The Middle East in particular saw an increase of 38.97 percent due to concerns over the ongoing conflicts, which led to an increase in stocks.

Key growth was seen in Israel, up 103.43 percent; Lebanon, up 72.97 percent; and Iraq, up 110.31 percent. In Asia, Japan maintained high import volumes of Thai canned tuna, although the strong yen led to a lower export value.

Thailand’s primary export markets in Asia and the Middle East include Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Export values reached 168.15 million dollars for Japan, marking a decrease of 17.88 percent due to currency fluctuations.

Saudi Arabia saw growth with exports valued at 110.91 million dollars, up 4.79 percent, while the United Arab Emirates recorded a significant increase of 55.30 percent, with export values totaling 100.91 million dollars.

Poonpong noted that for the African region, export values reached 247 million dollars, up 29.87 percent, driven by food insecurity and economic and political uncertainty in the region. Key markets included Libya, with exports valued at 124.62 million dollars, an increase of 12.62 percent; Egypt at 75.97 million dollars, up 106.17 percent; and South Africa at 28.87 million dollars, growing by 61.04 percent.

In Europe, export values were 170 million dollars, an increase of 42.48 percent due to European economic recovery and stockpiling of canned foods amid prolonged conflict. Ukraine showed notable growth at 72.81 percent.

Leading European markets were Switzerland, with exports valued at 30.92 million dollars, up 42.98 percent; Russia at 26.82 million dollars, increasing by 19.70 percent; and the United Kingdom at 26.76 million dollars, up 66.54 percent.

“Thailand has long held a leading position in the canned tuna market, with factors such as competitive labor costs, the economic and tourism recovery of key trading partners like the U.S. and Europe, and global concerns over conflict driving consistent export growth. However, with the strong baht and climate change reducing tuna supplies, Thai producers need to innovate and develop new products to sustain the growth of Thailand’s canned tuna market,” Poonpong concluded.
