Asst. Prof. Dr. Uthai Meekham shows the innovation results for the project "Changing white PS foam waste into lightweight construction materials.
NAKHON RATCHASIMA — Suranaree University of Technology launched on June 6 the research and innovation results for the project “Changing white PS foam waste into lightweight construction materials.” It was conducted by Asst. Prof. Dr. Uthai Meekham, a lecturer in the Department of Design Technology at the School of Engineering, Suranaree University of Technology.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Uthai utilized PS white foam waste, commonly used in various industries as cushioning for package transportation. The foam went through a two-step grinding process. The first step involved grinding the foam to the size of a marble and then further grinding it to the size of tiny grains of sand. The second step involved coating the fine foam pellets with glue, which attached to the foam beads.
The foam beads coated with glue and mixed with fly ash from industrial plants prevent clumping. The resulting material looks like small pebbles and can be used in engineering construction materials. It can be moulded into various shapes, such as bricks, blocks, and lightweight bricks.
The innovative material was developed as floor and wall tiles in laboratory experiments, with added color and aesthetic appeal. It retains strength while being lighter compared to standard ratios, making it a novel option for lightweight construction materials.
The amount of waste, mainly plastic, Styrofoam, and various packaging materials that decompose slowly, grows annually. Disposal methods for these wastes often incur high costs. This innovation explicitly targets white foam waste, a type of POLYSTYRENE (PS) foam used for cushioning and cooling boxes, which has consistently increased in volume.
Lightweight construction materials are produced from PS foam waste.
Therefore, the researchers had an idea to transform white foam waste according to the principles of “LIGHTWEIGHT PRODUCT DESIGN APPLICATIONS.”
They used waste materials from the industrial sector or packaging molded from commonly found white foam that can be upcycled to create a new type of “LIGHTWEIGHT ENGINEERED” material with special properties suitable for the construction industry.
Its outstanding feature is the capacity to adjust its style, size, and shape to suit various needs, such as creating tiled walkway surfaces. These artificial sandstone wall panels are used in building decoration as a substitute for gravel and sand, and the material is also used to produce lightweight plant pots through casting processes.
Lightweight construction materials are produced from PS foam waste.
The benefits of this innovation are:
It is capable of managing large quantities of foam waste that need to go through a recycling process to be reused. Although it involves higher costs than other plastic types, transitioning from waste to new upcycling will decrease the build-up of foam waste and increase the cycle of reusing it.
It helps obtain lightweight construction materials that can be created in various forms, not limited to just blocks or bricks. The material should enable collaboration to design items best suited for their intended use. For example, it could be used to create large lightweight plant pots for urban areas or to incorporate them into tall office buildings and residential condos.
Lastly, it can be further developed for commercial use and lead to career opportunities, especially for small to medium community enterprises, as the production cost is low. The main raw materials, such as leftover white foam waste, cheap fly ash from industrial plants, coating glues, and molding and grinding-compacting machines, are largely available within the country. This could be another way to generate income for the community.
"'Balakol', a one-eyed blind tigress who used to wander in the community areas, has been released into the Thap Lan forest on June 6, 2024. (Thailand Tiger Project)
PRACHIN BURI – The thin, left-eye blind tigress, which had previously wandered out of Mae Wong National Park and onto the road in the middle of a Karen village at Moo 18, Khlong Lan Phatthana Subdistrict, Khlong Lan District, Kamphaeng Phet Province since February 16, has now returned to the forest in Prachin Buri Province on June 6.
With the help of the Department of National Parks officials, this female tiger, named ‘Balakol’ which means ‘Khlong Lan’ in Karen language, received treatment for her eye wound, a wound on her left paw, and malnutrition. She stayed for 3 months at the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Uthai Thani Province.
Mr. Weera Khunchairak, Deputy Director-General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, revealed that the tigress Balakol is around 2 years old, with a body length of about 1.60 meters, a height of 55 centimeters, a tail length of 60 centimeters, and weighs approximately 105 kilograms.
“‘Balakol’, a one-eyed blind tigress who used to wander in the community areas, has been released into the Thap Lan forest on June 6, 2024. (Thailand Tiger Project)
She is considered a fully grown tigress, in good health, able to live in the forest, and has the instincts of a predator. The officials, therefore, decided to release Balakol into the Thap Lan forest.
The reason for choosing to release her in the Thap Lan forest, besides being quite far from the community, is that the Khlong Lan forest, which is connected to the western forest, is still very abundant. This will help spread genetic diversity and increase the abundance of the forest ecosystem.
FILE – Balakol the tigress just hungry because her mother could no longer look after her and she had to go out of the forest and find food herself in February 2024.
The officials have attached a radio tracking collar to monitor her movements and to ensure she does not pose a danger to people, as well as to follow up on Balakol’s life.
“This tigress is a subspecies found in Southeast Asia, so the prey animals are of the same subspecies. Even though there are tigers in the Thap Lan forest, it is believed that Balakol will be able to adapt. Moreover, tigers are predators and do not naturally eat their own kind. Currently, the officials are still closely monitoring to assess whether Balakol can hunt prey and live in the Thap Lan forest,” he said.
The DSI officers, in cooperation with other authorities in Phuket, raided three businesses allegedly run by foreigners on June 6, 2024.
PHUKET — The Department of Special Investigation (DSI), in cooperation with the Immigration Police, Tourist Police and other authorities in Phuket, raided three businesses allegedly run by foreigners. These companies are suspected of running illegal activities under the guise of legal businesses.
Mr. Thaveewat Surasit, Director of the DSI’s Security Cases Division, explained that the joint operation targeted three locations for which the authorities had search warrants. The aim was to investigate individuals and intermediaries involved in registering businesses for foreigners.
The DSI officers, in cooperation with other authorities in Phuket, raided three businesses allegedly run by foreigners on June 6, 2024.
“The purpose of enforcing the law is to prevent foreigners from exploiting loopholes in the law and at the same time to ensure that the law does not have a negative impact on investment. The aim is to attract beneficial investors into the country while excluding those who cause harm. Phuket is a critical area in this regard,” he said at the meeting.
As a result, officials from the Department of Tourism, the Department of Enterprise Development, the Tourist Police, the Immigration Police, the Phuket Police and the Institute of Forensic Science conducted simultaneous searches at the businesses concerned. The main aim was to collect data in order to take legal action in connection with foreigners’ businesses.
The first two locations were in Golden View Village, The Splash Courting, Kathu District, Phuket. The first company was Phuket Best Accounting Co., Ltd. at 9/511, and the second was a two-story building at 9/484. Records for Russian, Pakistani and Indian nationals with financial transactions totaling 200-300 million baht were seized at both locations.
The third location was a residential house in Rock Garden Village, Ratsada Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District.
The investigations into these suspicious groups have been a special case for the DSI since the end of last year. The financial data points to two main groups: Europeans, mainly Russians, and another group consisting of Pakistanis and Indians. The Russian group is mainly active in the real estate and hotel business, while the Pakistani and Indian groups focus on restaurants. According to the files, only a few Thais are involved.

Football Fans Tour to Germany
Chatree Tangthiengkul, managing director of World Planet International Co Ltd, a major Thai tour operator, told “Prachachat” that his company organizes trips to Germany and has secured a number of tickets for various matches.
While not as many as before the COVID-19 pandemic due to the increased cost of accommodation, food and other expenses, 5-6 tour groups have booked with the number of participants ranging from 15 to 28 people. These include friends, family groups and companies booking for marketing purposes, sales promotion or as gifts for fans.
Final Match Ticket Costs: 450,000 Baht
“This tour is organized as a travel package. The groups leave 1-2 days in advance and then travel to the stadium, where they usually arrive 2 hours before the match to eat and drink before watching the game. After the game, they return to their accommodation and continue their sightseeing tour before returning to Thailand. Most customers have been booking in advance since late last year or early this year because of the lengthy visa process,” Chatree said.
The Managing Director of World Planet mentioned that this year had been a challenge due to the high costs. Customers from the ASEAN countries, who used to attend, are almost non-existent this year. Travel costs for the semi-finals are around 380,000 baht and for the finals around 450,000 baht. Some tickets are still available, but only for those who already have a European visa, as it is now too late to apply.

BANGKOK — Indonesian police officers have already deported one of Thailand’s most wanted fugitives, and now Thailand has to hunt for the Indonesian drug lord and deport him as well.
Chaowalit Thongduang, also known as Pang Na-nhoad, was arrested on Indonesia’s tourist island of Bali following months on the run in connection with several killings and drug trafficking charges in Thailand. He was deported and arrived in Thailand on June 4, 2024.
Khaosod Online reported on the background of the Thai government, with Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, and his delegation traveled to cooperate with Indonesian authorities to bring back Pang Na-nhoad to stand trial in Thailand. This was done as part of talks to exchange vital information on drug and cross-border fraud cases.
The information came from the Malaysian Drug Enforcement Unit, the Indonesian Narcotics Control Board and Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB).

According to the information, the Indonesian authorities had informed Thailand via Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, and Pol. Lt. Gen. Phanurat Lakboon, Secretary General of ONCB, for help in locating Freddy Pratama, a major drug trafficker who has been issued a red notice by Interpol and is currently on the run.
An arrest warrant had been issued for Freddy for allegedly smuggling 10.2 tons of methamphetamine crystals and more than 11,000 ecstasy pills to Indonesia between 2020 and 2023. It is estimated that Freddy Pratama’s network smuggled 100-500 kilograms of drugs into Indonesia every month, often hidden in tea bags.
According to reports, the extradition of Paeng Nanhood from Indonesia to Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand, was accompanied by six Indonesian police officers who traveled to Thailand to assist in locating the whereabouts of Freddy Pratama after learning that he was still hiding at the Thai-Myanmar border.

(Valentina Pevtsova, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP)
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) — President Vladimir Putin warned Wednesday that Russia could provide long-range weapons to others to strike Western targets in response to NATO allies allowing Ukraine to use their arms to attack Russian territory.
Putin also reaffirmed Moscow’s readiness to use nuclear weapons if it sees a threat to its sovereignty.
The recent actions by the West will further undermine international security and could lead to “very serious problems,” he said, taking questions from international journalists — something that has become extremely rare since Moscow sent troops into Ukraine.
“That would mark their direct involvement in the war against the Russian Federation, and we reserve the right to act the same way,” Putin added.
The United States and Germany recently authorized Ukraine to hit some targets on Russian soil with the long-range weapons they are supplying to Kyiv.
On Wednesday, a Western official and a U.S. senator said Ukraine has used U.S. weapons to strike inside Russia under newly approved guidance from President Joe Biden that allows American arms to be used for the limited purpose of defending Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. The official was not authorized to comment publicly on the sensitive matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Putin claimed that using some Western-supplied weapons involves military personnel of those countries controlling the missiles and selecting targets, and therefore he said Moscow could take “asymmetrical” steps elsewhere in the world. The U.S. military said it does not control the missiles it provides to Ukraine or the targets.
“If they consider it possible to deliver such weapons to the combat zone to launch strikes on our territory and create problems for us, why don’t we have the right to supply weapons of the same type to some regions of the world where they can be used to launch strikes on sensitive facilities of the countries that do it to Russia?” he said.
“We will think about it,” he told the journalists on the sidelines of the annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
Asked whether Russia could resort to using nuclear arms, Putin said the conditions for utilizing that arsenal are clearly spelled out in Moscow’s security doctrine.
“For some reason, they believe in the West that Russia will never use it,” he said.
“Look at what is written there,” he said of Russia’s nuclear doctrine. “If somebody’s actions threaten our sovereignty and territorial integrity, we consider it possible to use all means at our disposal.”
Even Russia’s battlefield nuclear weapons are much more powerful than what the U.S. used against Japan in World War II, Putin said.
Speaking to senior news leaders of international news agencies, including The Associated Press, for more than three hours, Putin also said nothing will change in terms of Russia-U.S. relations regardless of whether Biden or Donald Trump wins the American presidential election in November.
“We will work with any president the American people elect,” Putin said.
“I say absolutely sincerely, I wouldn’t say that we believe that after the election something will change on the Russian track in the American politics,” he added. “We don’t think so. We think nothing that serious will happen.”
Putin also said Trump’s felony conviction at his hush money trial last week was the result of “the use of the court system as part of the internal political struggle.”
The Russian leader faced questions on various topics, although the more than two years of fighting in Ukraine dominated the session.
Putin claimed the West had opportunities to end the fighting in Ukraine but did not act on them, citing a letter he once supposedly wrote to Biden that said hostilities could end in two or three months if Washington stopped supplying Kyiv with weapons.
Asked about Russian military losses, Putin said that no country would reveal that information during hostilities but claimed without providing details that Ukraine’s casualties are five times greater than Russia’s.
He also said Ukraine has more than 1,300 Russian troops in captivity, while more than 6,400 Ukrainian soldiers are being held in Russia.
The claims could not be independently verified and some Western estimates put Russia’s losses much higher than Ukraine’s.
Asked by AP about the case of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, Putin said the U.S. is “taking energetic steps” to secure his release. Gershkovich was jailed over a year ago while on a reporting trip and charged with espionage. The journalist, his employer and the U.S. have denied the allegations, and Washington has declared him to be wrongfully detained.
Putin said that any such releases “aren’t decided via mass media” but through a “discreet, calm and professional approach.”
“And they certainly should be decided only on the basis of reciprocity,” he added, an allusion to a potential prisoner swap.
Putin has used the St. Petersburg forum as a showcase for touting Russia’s development and seeking investors. The meeting with journalists took place in Gazprom’s new global headquarters, a needle-shaped 81-story skyscraper overlooking the Gulf of Finland.
While meetings with journalists were part of previous sessions, he has not taken questions from Western journalists at the St. Petersburg event since sending troops to Ukraine.
Last year, journalists from countries that Russia regards as unfriendly — including the U.S., the U.K. and the European Union — were not invited, and Western officials and investors also steered clear of the session after wide-ranging sanctions were imposed on Moscow over Ukraine.
Immigration officers arrested Mr. Abul, a 61-year-old Iranian national, at a condominium in Bangkok.
BANGKOK – An Iranian businessman, who fled Chonburi to Bangkok, was arrested for defrauding a compatriot, causing 21 million baht in damages.
Immigration officers arrested Mr. Abul, a 61-year-old Iranian national, based on an arrest warrant issued by the Chonburi Provincial Court. He was apprehended at a condominium room on Rom Klao Road, Lat Krabang District, Bangkok.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Phantana Nutcharot, Deputy Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, stated in a press conference that Mr. Abul is accused of filing a false report, causing a government official to record false information in a public or official document, and entering false information in company documents to deceive a partnership, company, partners, or shareholders, causing them to lose benefits they are entitled to.
Immigration officers show a chart which summarizes the investigation leading to the arrest of an Iranian suspect.
In this case, the victim, who is also Iranian, filed a complaint with the investigating officer at Si Racha Police Station, Chonburi Province, stating that Mr. Abul had falsely amended the minutes of a meeting of a private company in the Yan Nawa area of Bangkok to grant himself the authority to sell the company’s land located in Si Racha District, Chonburi Province.
Mr. Abul’s actions caused the company and its partners to suffer damages amounting to over 21 million baht or about 573,400 USD, but he evaded responsibility by claiming he was unaware of the situation before fleeing.
Subsequently, the police investigated and gathered evidence to request an arrest warrant from the Chonburi Provincial Court for Mr. Abul. They discovered that he had fled to hide in a condominium room in Bangkok. He was then arrested and handed over to the investigating officers at Si Racha Police Station for legal proceedings.

For the Olympic Games, which will be held from July 26, 2024, to August 11, 2024, Thai athletes will be participating in the competition.
