An Australian man with links to a foreign criminal network has been arrested in a luxury housing estate in Pattaya.
PATTAYA — An Australian fugitive with links to a foreign criminal network has been arrested in a luxury village in Pattaya.
On June 5, immigration police officers announced the arrest of Mr. Grey, a 52-year-old Australian national, whose permission to stay in the Kingdom had been revoked due to his behaviour being linked to a foreign criminal network in the Phuket Province, causing troubles to the local people.
Grey also has an arrest warrant in Australia and a criminal record, having previously served a prison sentence in Australia for drug-related offenses and other crimes harmful to society. He also has an arrest warrant for drug trafficking and possession of drugs.
The officers search a house in Pattaya where the Australian criminal is hiding. The police officers take the Australian fugitive to Sub-Division 3 of the Immigration Bureau for the process of deportation.
This case stemmed from the arrest of a British man by Chalong Police Station in Phuket for carrying a gun into a pub. Upon further investigation, a connection to Mr. Grey was found. Grey’s behaviour was then reported to the Foreign Affairs Division of the Royal Thai Police and Immigration Division 6 for consideration and action under the Immigration Act of 1979.
After consideration by Immigration Division 6, it was determined that Mr. Grey’s behaviour was credible evidence that he is a person who is a danger to society or may cause harm to the peace or safety of the public or the security of the Kingdom, or is a person for whom a foreign government official has issued an arrest warrant. Therefore, Mr. Grey’s permission to stay in the Kingdom was revoked.
However, Mr. Grey became alert and fled from Phuket. The officers investigated until they learned that he was hiding in a luxury village in Pattaya, Chonburi Province. They then went to notify him of the revocation of his permission to stay in the Kingdom and took him into custody, sending him to Sub-Division 3 of the Immigration Bureau for the process of deportation and blacklisting him from entering the Kingdom in the future.

AirAsia’s marketing efforts to attract Indian tourists align with the growing trend of Indians visiting Thailand more frequently due to the government’s policy of extending free visas to Indians.
According to Government Spokesperson Chai Wacharoke, Thailand has attracted more Indian tourists as a result of the visa-free measure. The Thai cabinet earlier approved the extension of a temporary visa exemption for visitors from India not exceeding 30 days, effective from May 11, 2024 to November 11, 2024.
Consequently, the searches for Thailand on the platform Airbnb, an online marketplace for lodging, have risen over 200% from the number in 2023. Airbnb states that Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Krabi, and Koh Samui are the five most-searched destinations in Thailand.

A tiger cub peeks through the basket in which the seller placed it to deliver to the buyer in Bueng Kan Province on June 4, 2024.
BUENG KAN – Pol. Maj. Gen. Watcharin Poosit, Commander of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division (NED), ordered officers on June 4 to arrest Mr. Ho The Luc, 34, a Vietnamese national, and Ms. Sawitree, 42, along with evidence including a one-month-old tiger cub, a plastic basket, and two mobile phones in the Wisit sub-district, Mueang district, Bueng Kan province.
A policeman feeds milk to a tiger cub that was rescued from a transnational wildlife trafficking gang.
Earlier, officials had been informed by the Wildlife Justice Commission (WJC) about Mr. Ho, a Vietnamese man involved in international wildlife trafficking in Laos, Vietnam and Myanmar. The suspect was allegedly hiding in Laos and had offered a tiger cub for sale in a secret group. Authorities planned a sting operation to buy a tiger cub and arranged the handover in Bueng Kan province.
The officers checked the area and at the specified time found Mr. Ho and Ms. Sawitree handing over a one-month-old female tiger to an undercover officer. They then revealed their identities and arrested the suspects. During the investigation, Mr. Ho confessed to booking the sale of the tiger cub, claiming it had been purchased from a breeding farm in Vietnam.
Ms. Sawitree denied any involvement in wildlife trafficking and stated that she did not know that the crate she was carrying contained a tiger cub. She claimed the crate belonged to an acquaintance named Ton from Laos, who had asked her to deliver it to a customer.
The authorities found that although the two people did not know each other, they both stood to benefit from the sale price of 300,000 baht or 8,200 USD. They were handed over to NED investigators who charged them with “joint possession of protected wildlife without authorization”
The police officers reveal their identities and arrest the suspects when they hand over a one-month-old female tiger.
The tiger is a protected species under the Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act of 2019 and is also on the CITES Controlled Species List, Appendix I, No. 26. Trade in tigers is strictly prohibited due to their endangered status. Offenders face a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to 1 million baht, or both.

In line with efforts to promote the New Southbound Policy (NSP), MOFA convened a meeting on April 12 with relevant government agencies on further improving visa measures for nationals of NSP partner countries traveling to Taiwan.
The meeting conducted a comprehensive review of existing visa and entry measures, focusing on the trial visa-free entry program for nationals of Thailand, Brunei, and the Philippines; the Project for Simplifying Visa Regulations for High-end Group Tourists from Southeast Asian Countries; and conditional visa-free entry through the Online Application for R.O.C. (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC) scheme for nationals of Southeast Asian countries.
After evaluating the effectiveness of the above measures over the past years, participating agencies decided to extend the trial visa-free entry program for one year for nationals of Thailand, Brunei, and the Philippines from August 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025.
In addition, the Project for Simplifying Visa Regulations for High-end Group Tourists from Southeast Asian Countries will be extended for a further year through December 31, 2025, and the conditional visa-free entry through the TAC scheme will remain in place.
MOFA will continue to review and fine-tune visa policies, with a view to strengthening bilateral exchanges and attracting more visitors while ensuring border and public security. MOFA will also continue to communicate with the governments of related countries to enhance visa treatment for Taiwan nationals and make their overseas travel more convenient.

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who claimed victory for his alliance in an election seen as a referendum on his decade in power, is a popular but polarizing leader who has presided over a fast-growing economy while advancing Hindu nationalism.
Modi, 73, is only the second Indian prime minister to win a third straight term.
His Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party failed to secure a majority on its own — as it did in 2014 and 2019 — after facing a stronger than expected challenge from the opposition. But together with other parties in his National Democratic Alliance, his bloc won enough seats for a slim parliamentary majority and to form his third consecutive government, Election Commission data showed Tuesday.
To supporters, Modi is a larger-than-life figure who has improved India’s standing in the world, helped make its economy the world’s fifth-largest, and streamlined the country’s vast welfare program, which serves around 60% of the population. To some, he may even be more than human.
FILE – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi greets supporters during a roadshow in Varanasi, India, on May 13, 2024.
But to critics, he’s a cult leader who has eroded India’s democracy and advanced divisive politics targeting the Muslims who make up 14% of the country’s population. They say he has also increasingly wielded strong-arm tactics to subdue political opponents, squeeze independent media and quash dissent.
Modi’s government has rejected such accusations and says democracy is flourishing.
Political analysts say Modi’s victory was driven by social welfare programs that provided benefits from food to housing, and the strident Hindu nationalism that has consolidated a majority of Hindu votes for his party. Hindus make up 80% of India’s population.
The economy is growing by 7% and more than 500 million Indians have opened bank accounts during Modi’s tenure, but that growth hasn’t created enough jobs, and inequality has worsened under his rule, according to some economists.
Modi began his election campaign two months ago by promising to turn India into a developed country by 2047 and focused on highlighting his administration’s welfare policies and a robust digital infrastructure that have benefited millions of Indians.

But as the campaign progressed, he increasingly resorted to anti-Muslim rhetoric, calling them “infiltrators” and making references to a Hindu nationalist claim that Muslims were overtaking the Hindu population by having more children. Modi also accused the opposition of pandering to the minority community.
Conspicous piety has long been a centerpiece of Modi’s brand, but he’s also begun suggesting that he was chosen by God.
In a TV interview during the campaign, he said “When my mother was alive, I used to believe that I was born biologically. After she passed away, upon reflecting on all my experiences, I was convinced that God had sent me.”
In January, he delivered on a longstanding Hindu nationalist ambition by leading the opening of a controversial temple on the site of a razed mosque.
After campaigning ended last week, Modi went to a Hindu spiritual site for a televised 45-hour meditation retreat. Most Indian TV channels spent hours showing the event.

Born in 1950 to a lower-caste family in western Gujarat state, as a young boy Modi joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a paramilitary, right-wing group which has long been accused of stoking hatred against Muslims. RSS is the ideological parent of Modi’s BJP.
The tea seller’s son got his first big political break in 2001, becoming chief minister of his home state of Gujarat. A few months in, anti-Muslim riots ripped through the region, killing at least 1,000 people. There were suspicions that Modi quietly supported the riots, but he has denied the allegations.
In 2005, the U.S. revoked Modi’s visa, citing concerns that he did not act to stop the communal violence. An investigation approved by the Indian Supreme Court later absolved Modi, but the stain of the dark moment has lingered.
Thirteen years later, Modi led his Hindu nationalist party to a spectacular victory in the 2014 national elections after promising sweeping reforms to jumpstart India’s flagging economy.
But Modi’s critics and opponents say his Hindu-first politics have bred intolerance, hate speech and brazen attacks against the country’s minorities, especially Muslims.
Months after securing a second term in 2019, his government revoked the special status of disputed Kashmir, the country’s only Muslim-majority state, and split it into two federally governed territories. His government passed a law that grants citizenship to religious minorities from Muslim countries in the region but excludes Muslims.
Decision like these have made Modi hugely popular among his diehard supporters who hail him as the champion of the Hindu majority and see India emerging as a Hindu majoritarian state.
Modi has spent his political life capitalizing on religious tensions for political gain, said Christophe Jaffrelot, a political scientist and expert on Modi and the Hindu right. During his time as a state leader, he pioneered a embrace of Hindu nationalism unlike anything seen before in Indian politics.
“That style has remained. It was invented in Gujarat and today it is a national brand,” Jaffrelot said.

Khaosod Political News Digest on June 4, 2024
PM satisfied with govt’s 6-month performance
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin expressed satisfaction with the government’s 6-month performance in agriculture, drug seizures, and combating cybercrime. However, he highlighted the need to focus on improving education and reducing household debt, as it is a significant burden on the people.
Regarding the economy, he noted that efforts to attract investors through the BOI and Thai trade negotiations are ongoing. Meanwhile, Thailand needs to stimulate production, create jobs, and explore new global markets to address the low capacity utilization in the industrial sector.
He also mentioned the government’s support for the “Equal Marriage Act” draft, aimed at promoting diversity.

Wissanu returns to start his job at the Government House
Government chief legal advisor Wissanu Krea-ngam, who was also chief legal advisor to the junta, attended the Cabinet meeting for the first time. He insisted that his return to work this time does not have any negative impact on the nation. There is nothing to be excited about being an ordinary advisor, not a political official advisor. He will mostly work from home and will come to the Government House only on Tuesdays.
He also denied he accepts the job in exchange for the government’s promise to procure him a kidney for a transplant.
He said he has already reviewed the defence paper of PM Srettha Thavisin to be submitter to the Constitutional Court but will not divulge on the details because it may affect the case.

Please use facts, not politics to justify cannabis, says Anutin
Interior Minister Anutin Charnveerakul, the man who, as Public Health Minister two years ago, successfully pushed for the decriminalization of marijuana for medical purposes, warned on Tuesday that the current government’s move to recriminalize marijuana for recreational purposes will affect the economy negatively. He urged those against cannabis to use facts and not politics in deliberating the issue.
“To those who say medication costs have gone up as a result [of healing those affected by marijuana], I can also say that there were plenty who recovered from cancer by using cannabis, or countless now enjoy a better quality of life. Many recover from Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s, not to mention the contribution made to the economy,” said Anutin, adding that those who want to recriminalize marijuana will have to answer to people who have invested money in the weed trade and industry.

Tax measures to encourage tourists in low season
The Thai Government cabinet meeting on June 4, 2024, approved draft legislation related to tax measures to boost domestic tourism. These measures include tax benefits for individuals and juristic partnerships traveling to less visited areas, especially during the low season from May to November.
This decision comes as part of the government’s strategy to leverage tourism to stimulate economic growth, following the finance ministry’s urgent recommendation and subsequent forwarding of it to the Council of State. These initiatives could generate 1,500 million baht in taxes, with expectations that full government support could increase this revenue further, particularly for secondary cities/provinces.

EC urged to investigate alleged fake senatorial candidates
Pheu Thai Party MP Chaturon Chaisaeng called for the Election Commission to seriously probe the allegation made by some that at least over a hundred senatorial candidates were, in fact, fake candidates who filed their candidacy in order to manipulate the upcoming indirect elections. In these elections, peers from the same 20 professional sectors will vote to choose winning candidates to advance to the second and third rounds.
Chaturon said this could lead to a failed election with no new Senate.
