Four Indonesians Steal $8,700 from A Japanese Tourist in Bangkok

Japanese

BANGKOK – Thonglor Police Station’s officers arrested four Indonesian men—Mr. Jaya Abidi, 61; Mr. Irsandi, 58; Mr. Suhenda, 41; and Mr. Iwan Susanto, 50—on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery after stealing money from a Japanese visitor.

Police arrested the suspects based on CCTV evidence showing they were conspiring to steal money from Mr. Yoshimune Yoshida. The Japanese visitor reported the theft of about 8,700 US dollars (about 310,000 Thai baht) from the Value Plus exchange office on the G floor of EmQuartier shopping mall on Sukhumvit Road on January 24.

Four Indonesian men were arrested for stealing a Japanese visitor’s money.

After checking CCTV footage from the Value Plus Exchange shop and the mall where the victim shopped, the four suspects were identified. They approached the Japanese tourist from various directions, took his belongings without his awareness, and left the mall in a pink cab.

Police followed the suspects’ trail on CCTV footage and found that the group got out of the cab at Soi Ekamai and later boarded a green-and-yellow cab towards Rama 9 before stopping in front of the Buddy Place Hotel at Ramkhamhaeng Soi 81/4, where they were arrested in front of the hotel’s lobby.

When the staff were questioned, it emerged that the criminal group consisted of Indonesians who had rented three hotel rooms for daily stays. The police then conducted a search, collected evidence and requested the arrest of the suspected group for conspiracy to commit robbery, with all individuals making statements during the course of the investigation.

The investigation revealed that all the suspects had traveled from Indonesia to commit the robbery. They targeted the victim by deceiving him while he had money in a backpack. After the crime, they divided the stolen money among themselves and transferred it to their families in Indonesia.

How to Tech: Why It’s Important To Turn On Apple’s New Stolen Device Protection

Stolen Device Protection

LONDON (AP) — You’re in a crowded bar when a thief watches you unlock your iPhone with your passcode, then swipes it. That sinking feeling hits when you realize it’s gone, along with priceless photos, important files, passwords on banking apps and other vital parts of your digital life.

Apple rolled out an update to its iOS operating system this week with a feature called Stolen Device Protection that makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to access key functions and settings. Users are being urged to turn it on immediately.

Here’s how to activate the new security option and why it’s so important:

SHOULD I TURN ON STOLEN DEVICE PROTECTION?

The software update for iPhones and iPads includes the essential new feature designed to foil thieves from wiping phones for resale or accessing Apple ID or other important accounts. Stolen Device Protection is a new setting that’s included with the latest iOS release, version 17.3.

This undated screenshot shows the location of the new iPhone Stolen Device Protection setting on iPhones. Apple rolled out an update to its iOS operating system this week that makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to access key functions and settings. (AP Photo)

Apple says the feature, buried in your iPhone’s settings, adds an extra layer of security for users. It addresses a vulnerability that thieves have discovered and exploited: allowing them to lock victims out of their Apple accounts, delete their photos and other files from their iCloud accounts and empty their bank accounts by accessing passwords kept in the Keychain password manager.

Apple is introducing the feature as anecdotal evidence suggests phone thefts are surging. Stories of stolen phones abound on Reddit groups and in news articles in places from Los Angeles to London, where police say pickpocketing, “table surfing” and moped snatching are common tactics.

The Wall Street Journal reported last year how criminals watched people use their passcodes to gain access to their personal information after stealing their phones.

HOW DOES STOLEN DEVICE PROTECTION WORK?

Stolen Device Protection keeps track of a user’s “familiar locations,” such as their home or workplace, and adds extra biometric security hoops to jump through if someone tries to use the device to do certain things when it’s away from those places.

AP24024723911415
This screenshot shows where to find the Stolen Device Protection on the iPhone SE settings menu. Apple rolled out an update to its iOS operating system this week that makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to access key functions and settings. (AP Photo)

It also reduces the importance of passcodes, which thieves can steal by peering over someone’s shoulder or threatening and forcing victims to hand them over, in favor of “biometric” features such as faces or fingerprints that are a lot harder to duplicate.

Let’s say the bar thief that snatched your iPhone tries to erase its contents and settings to sell it. With Stolen Device Protection turned on, the phone will now require a Face ID or Touch ID scan to verify that person is the rightful owner.

And that’s the only way — the new feature doesn’t let someone use the passcode or any other backup method.

Other actions that will trigger this feature if it’s not at a familiar place include using passwords saved in Keychain or payment methods saved in Safari, turning off Lost Mode, applying for a new Apple Card or using the iPhone to set up a new device.

Stolen Device Protection
This screenshot shows the security delay feature on Apple’s stolen device protection update for iPhones. The delay is triggered by attempts to change critical settings when the user is away from familiar locations. The update makes it a lot harder for phone thieves to access key functions and settings. (AP Photo)

There’s also a second layer designed to slow down thieves trying to access critical security settings. If someone tries to, say, sign out of an Apple ID account, change the passcode or reset the phone while it’s in an unfamiliar location, they’ll have to authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID, wait an hour, then do a second facial or fingerprint scan.

Changing an Apple ID password, updating Apple ID security settings, adding or removing Face or Touch ID, and turning off the Find My device feature or Stolen Device Protection also will trigger this feature.

“The security delay is designed to prevent a thief from performing critical operations so that you can mark your device as lost and make sure your Apple account is secure,” the company said. “When your iPhone is in a familiar location, these additional steps will not be required and you can use your device passcode like normal.”

HOW DO I ACTIVATE STOLEN DEVICE PROTECTION?

It’s simple — if you know where to look.

First, download and update your iPhone or iPad with the latest iOS update. Then go to your settings, scroll down to “Face ID & Passcode” or “Touch ID & Passcode” and enter your passcode. Scroll down and you’ll see Stolen Device Protection.

Depending on your iPhone model, you’ll need to tap or toggle to turn it on or off. Make sure you’ve first activated two-factor authentication and Find My device for your Apple ID account, or it won’t show up.

WHAT DEVICES DOES IT APPLY TO?

IPhone XS and newer models, including second- and third-generation SE models.

Pol. Gen. Surachate stated that the allegations from Mr. Jens’ interview with the DW documentary, in which he said the Thai judiciary had accepted one million baht to let him escape to Germany, have been proven to be false.

“The German public prosecutor’s office confirmed to me on talk that Mr. Jens was taken into custody and investigated after his return to Germany. The authorities assured that no payments were made to anyone, except for legal fees for bail, and emphasized the cooperation of Thai officials in the process,” Pol. Gen. Surachate said.

Pol. Gen. Surachate Hakparn, deputy commander of the Royal Thai Police, attended a meeting with German authorities at the Serious and Organised Crime (SO) Federal Criminal Police Office in Wiesbaden, Germany, on January 25, 2024.

Jens told the German public prosecutor that he did not know how old the Thai girl was. He explained that he had asked for bail because he had health problems and needed to take care of some business. He was then placed on a travel restriction due to COVID-19, so he could not return to Thailand as ordered by the Thai court.

Jens also wrote a letter clarifying the situation and explicitly pointing out that the information contained in the documentary had been manipulated to damage Thailand’s image. He regretted having participated in an interview without fully understanding the situation and apologized for the damage caused.

The German prosecutor also stated that they are willing to work with the National Police Office in Thailand to combat human trafficking and maintain Thailand’s reputation as a tourist destination.

Man Sentenced To Death Over 2019 Kyoto Animation Arson That Killed 36

Kyoto

TOKYO – A Japanese court on Thursday sentenced Shinji Aoba to death for the 2019 arson attack on a Kyoto Animation Co. studio that killed 36 people, finding him mentally competent to be held accountable for his crimes.

Aoba, 45, earlier admitted to setting the blaze at the animation firm’s premises in Kyoto, western Japan, on July 18, 2019. In addition to the deaths, 32 employees were injured in the attack that has gone down as one of Japan’s worst mass murders.

As the defendant confessed to his role in the incident, the focus of the trial at the Kyoto District Court had been on whether he could be declared mentally competent.

Aoba had told the court he was motivated to carry out his crimes under the belief that Kyoto Animation had plagiarized a novel he entered into a contest run by the firm.

While Presiding Judge Keisuke Masuda acknowledged that Aoba did suffer from a delusional disorder, his conduct was little affected by it, and the defendant was “not in a state of mental incompetence or diminished capacity” at the time.

The court concluded there was no reason to avoid the death penalty even after considering circumstances favorable to the defendant, such as showing remorse, ruling his responsibility for taking 36 lives is “extremely heavy.”

The defense team had sought an acquittal or lesser sentence, arguing Aoba was not of sound mind and suffering from delusions. The 45-year-old has said he believed he was fighting back against a “dark figure” who was the architect of his book’s failure in the competition and its alleged theft.

Although Aoba apologized to the bereaved for the first time during the trial on Dec. 6, he continued to assert that the firm copied his novel.

On the day of the sentencing, Aoba entered court in a wheelchair pushed by a prison officer, his face and neck showing red scars caused by burns he sustained in the fire. He remained seated when bowing with others present at the start of court proceedings.

When asked if he had anything to say before the court announced his sentence, an emotionless Aoba said he did not. Similarly, he showed little reaction when the court delivered its verdict.

Amid interest in the high-profile trial, 409 members of the public lined up outside the courtroom in snowy conditions in a bid to secure tickets for one of 23 seats made available for observing proceedings.

Kyoto Animation, often referred to as “KyoAni,” is known worldwide for producing hit anime works including “K-On!” and “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.”

The company’s President Hideaki Hatta said in a statement that the court gave an “appropriate response and decision in accordance with the law,” but added, “Even after the ruling, our sorrow has not changed in the slightest.”

He paid tribute to all who took part in the trial and mourned the loss of lives in the attack before pledging that the company will continue to produce work while treasuring its employees.

According to the ruling, Aoba entered the firm’s Studio 1 at around 10:30 a.m. and started the fire using gasoline. There were 70 employees in the building at the time.

The trial began last September, more than four years after the incident, as Aoba sustained life-threatening burns and needed to undergo intense treatment and rehabilitation.

Two More Lions Appear on the Road in Chonburi

lions
The two lions, one male and one female, were pets at a house in Moo 4, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi Province.

CHONBURI – On January 25, 2024, two more lions were spotted in Chonburi province, Thailand, causing concern among locals. The incident occurred after a video went viral showing a foreigner driving a Bentley convertible with a lion cub through a busy street in Pattaya.

Residents in Moo 4, Huay Yai district, found two large lions roaming the streets of Soi Khao Ma Kok 13 before being led home by a caretaker.

Police officers from Huay Yai Police Station, the Tourist Police, and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP) responded to the incident and found that the two lions were pets at a house in Moo 4, Bang Lamung district. The lions were a male and a female, and there were also two Rottweilers in the house.

Miss Sky, 28, the lions’ owner, said she has had the two lions since they were about 45 days old. They were originally kept at Sattahip, but she brought them to this home six months ago. The lions are now about 10 months old and she keeps them with the dogs. She said the lions have never shown any aggression towards her or anyone else. She added that people can touch the lions when she is around.

She said the lions had escaped because the automatic gate to the property opened by itself. The caretaker quickly brought them back into the house and locked the gate to prevent it from opening again.

Miss Sky then showed the officers documents showing that she had obtained the two lions from a lion breeding farm. She also told the officers that she wanted to sell the lions back to the farm within the next two days.

lion couple2
The owner said that people can touch the lions when she is around.

The officials said they would carefully consider how to proceed with the case.

Kongkiat Temtamnan, Director of the Office of Conservation Area 2 (Sriracha), announced later the preliminary examination results: Both lions were implanted with microchip numbers, but only one of them matched. The other one does not match the document transferring the lion from the farm to the owner.

Furthermore, the lion was kept without permission, as the lion possession timetable requires anyone who owns a lion before October 18, 2022, to notify National Park Service officials by March 2023.

Since the owner has been in possession of the lions since December 29, 2022, she must have notified them immediately. But in this case, the owner hasn’t been notified. Therefore, it is considered an offence to possess controlled wild animals.

According to the Wildlife Act, officials were required to seize them. Then they’ll be housed in the Bang Lamung Wildlife Breeding Station. The veterinary team must first get the owner’s approval before loading the animal into the car.

lion couple1
The lion couple has been raised with Rottweilers in the house.

In the Pattaya lion cub case, Prasert Sornsathapornkul, director of the DNP’s Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department, announced on January 25 that officials have charged three people with possessing a controlled wildlife species without a permit.

The three individuals are Miss Pupe, the owner of the lion, Miss Albina, a Ukrainian national, the lion’s keeper and a Sri Lankan businessman who drives the car in the video. The charges carry a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of 100,000 baht (about 2,700 dollars) or both.

The DNP also accused the owner of the farm, Mr. Kitt, of possessing a lion and moving it without permission. The charges carry a maximum penalty of six months in prison, a fine of 50,000 baht (about $1,350) or both.

“The lion cub is still in the house where it was found,” Prasert said. “It is being cared for by someone familiar with it until the investigation is complete. Then it will be returned to the farm.”

According to data from January 23, 2024, there are 38 people statewide who have reported owning 224 lions. There are 14 lions in Chonburi Province, with one owner claiming to own two of them for recreation; the remaining lions live on three farms and one zoo.

The DNP said it will expedite its inspections of all lion owners to ensure the lions are kept in safe and secure conditions.
