Thailand’s LGBTQ+ Community Hopeful as Marriage Equality Bill Is Set To Be Discussed in Parliament

BANGKOK (AP) — Naphat Krutthai and Rasithaya Jindasri have been in a committed relationship for eight years, but only now can they consider getting married.

In a clothing shop in Siam Square, a commercial hub in Thailand’s capital, the happy couple excitedly eyed multi-colored garments as they discussed their potential wedding. Naphat, a transgender man, and Rasithaya, a woman, want to formalize their union, as Parliament is set to debate Thursday a final Cabinet-endorsed draft bill to pass landmark legislation allowing members of the LGBTQ+ community to get married.

The bill seeks to amend the Civil and Commercial Code, changing the words “men and women” and “husband and wife” to “individuals” and “marriage partners.”

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin told reporters Tuesday after the Cabinet meeting that it will grant LGBTQ+ couples the “exact same equal rights” as heterosexual couples. This would make Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to pass such a law and the third in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal.

Naphat — or “Jim” as he’s known — said he and Rasithaya planned to register their marriage as soon as the law allowed it. As an advocate for trans rights himself, Naphat told The Associated Press, the anticipated change was not just a formality. A marriage certificate would allow LGBTQ+ couples a range of benefits, including healthcare and inheritance rights, that they have long been denied.

“It means a lot. This is the eighth year of our relationship. But our status isn’t legally recognized,“ he said. ”When either of us gets sick or has an emergency, we can’t take care of each other properly. So it really matters to us.”

Thailand has a global reputation for acceptance and inclusivity. In June, downtown Bangkok staged its annual Pride Parade. It drew tens of thousands in a joyous, hourslong party. Srettha, the premier, has said after he took office in August that he supported Thailand’s bid to be a host of World Pride in 2028.

But once the crowds disappeared and the music stopped, the reality of being LGBTQ+ in Thailand may be less rosy than it might look.

“I think what foreigners see isn’t the reality,” said Nattipong Boonpuang, a 32-year-old fortune-teller and model. “People aren’t actually as open to gender diversity as they may think,” he said, adding they sometimes receive negative comments in both real life and online.

Nattipong is also a member of the Bangkok Gay Men’s Chorus which was founded about a year ago.

What bound the chorus together, beyond their love of music, was a mission to advocate for more acceptance of LGBTQ+ people in Thailand, according to the chorus leader Vitaya Saeng-Aroon.

Vitaya said attitudes toward the LGBTQ+ community in Thailand have definitely improved in recent years, but there was still a long way to go for misconceptions and legal discrimination remained.

“We don’t want privileges. People misunderstand that we are calling for special treatment. Our community just wants fair treatment, on a daily basis,” he said.

Thailand has struggled to pass a marriage equality law.

Last year, members of Parliament debated several legal amendments to allow either marriage equality or civil unions, which did not give LGBTQ+ couples all of the same rights as heterosexual couples. None of the proposed bills passed before Parliament was dissolved for election.

However, this year, Vitaya said things look more promising with the new draft bill being “very progressive.” He hoped it would be approved so the rights of the LGBTQ+ community be finally recognized by law.

In May’s general election, marriage equality was a hot topic for both the ruling party Pheu Thai and the opposition’s Move Forward.

The latest bill appeared to have general support. But it still needs to be debated several times in Parliament before approval. Once passed, the country’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn would endorse it to become a law.

The government said the next step may be an amendment to the pension fund law to recognize all couples.

The change might mean a lot to those affected, but it would barely shake Thai society, according to one analyst. Attitudes toward marriage have changed, said Khemthong Tonsakulrungruang, a law lecturer at Bangkok’s Chulalongkorn University, and the law was simply catching up.

“There’s already cultural marriage — it’s not legal — but there’s cultural ceremonies, religious ceremonies between LGBTs,” he said. “It makes headlines sometimes, but it’s become more and more common for two persons, regardless of gender, to get married. So, it would reflect the change that has already been here … for years.”

CP, True Leasing, SCG, Toyota, and CJPT sign Memorandum of Understanding to Further Accelerate Cross-Industry Efforts Towards Achieving Carbon Neutrality in Thailand

Charoen Pokphand Group (CP), True Leasing (TLS), Siam Cement Group (SCG), Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota), and Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Corporation (CJPT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to further accelerate collaboration towards achieving carbon neutrality in Thailand.

This MOU is based on achievements to date in our joint efforts, including logistics efficiency at CP and SCG sites and the introduction of carbon-neutral mobility based on usage in Thailand.

Based on an agreement built on the deep trusting relationship between CP’s Senior Chairman Dhanin Chearavanont, President and CEO of SCG Roongrote Rangsiyopash, and then-President Akio Toyoda of Toyota; CP, TLS, SCG, Toyota and CJPT have been promoting initiatives in the three areas of data, mobility, and energy.

This MOU is signed by Soopakij Chearavanont, Chairman of CP Group; Koji Sato, CEO of Toyota; Roongrote Rangsiyopash, CEO of SCG; Hiroki Nakajima, President of CJPT; and Kachorn Chiaravanont, President of True Leasing. Efforts are underway while considering how they can contribute to the happiness of the 67 million Thai citizens under the concept of doing what can be done now, together with like-minded partners

There are three areas of focus: Data Solutions, Mobility Solutions, and Energy Solutions. In Data Solutions, we improved loading efficiency and optimized delivery routes by utilizing big data from CP and SCG’s retail and logistics operations as well as traffic flow and vehicle data. At the stores where we conducted the demonstration, we confirmed approximately 15%*1 immediate reduction in CO2 emissions.

For Mobility Solutions, we introduced a variety of vehicles, including FC Trucks, the Hilux Revo BEV concept, the JPN TAXI LPG-HEV, and mini-commercial light vans (Kei) based on how they are used in Thailand. The vehicles were used in the demonstration for logistics and human flow operations. We confirmed approximately 68 tons/year*2 reduction in CO2 emissions. In addition, we succeeded in flight verification of the FC Drone for fertilizing, seeding, and other tasks at a CP Farm.

image3 20

For Energy Solutions, we introduced, for the first time in Thailand, equipment to produce hydrogen using biogas derived from Charoen Pokphand Foods poultry farm manure and food waste at Toyota’s bases, for the effective use of energy unique to Thailand. The hydrogen was used as fuel for FC Trucks and the FC Drone—and in a racing car at the end of December. In addition, we have plans to conduct a demonstration on energy management at our sites using solar power generation and a Battery Energy Storage System.

As the next step, under the concept of various approaches and depending on the usage in Thailand, we will contribute to carbon neutrality using HEVs or Kei that are immediately required in Thai society, as well as the further introduction of FCEVs and BEVs.

image6 10

We are also taking on the challenge of energy efficiency improvement and cost reduction throughout the entire process of producing, transporting, and using energy by using renewable energy suited to resource conditions and usage in Thailand.

To improve logistics efficiency through data, we will utilize CP and SCG’s data in retail and logistics as well as Toyota’s Digital Twin Technology to optimize the flow of personnel, logistics, and energy by collaborating with a social system, such as energy management and traffic control, etc.

image5 12

To accelerate those initiatives, under the unified MOU and with the new company Commercial Japan Partnership Technologies Asia Co., Ltd. established in Thailand, we join forces across industries to realize a carbon-neutral society that is unique to Thailand, starting from Thailand and needed by other countries.

AIS Supports The Tourism And Ocean Economy

AIS supports the tourism and ocean economy, showcasing the strengths of Intelligence network to elevate “SEA COVERAGE” on the coastal areas of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea for all customers’ needs

AIS is advancing a crucial mission, aiming to develop and expand the 5G smart network to have comprehensive coverage in every area—widest, farthest, highest, and deepest in Thailand. The latest announcement reinforces its actual position as a leader by declaring the success of “SEA COVERAGE” on the coastal areas of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.

It promotes innovative intelligence network infrastructure and cutting-edge technology ready to serve in all aspects, including speed, strength, and  coverage. Being the first and foremost in Thailand, it meets the needs of various user groups, including the Tourism Sector, Fisheries Sector, and Local Community Sector such as ferry services, yacht operators, hoteliers, and restaurant owners, both from Thailand and abroad. This initiative supports the growth of the ocean economy in every dimension.

image3 19

Mr. Wasit Wattanasap, Head of Nationwide Operations and Support Business Unit, AIS stated, “The critical mission at the core of AIS Team is the continuous delivery of services with signal quality and innovation that is always ready to connect without limitations. Therefore, we never cease in the ongoing development of the network to continually enhance its capability to meet evolving and diverse needs, including improving coverage in areas where it was already present. This is in response to the ever-changing and varied demands.”

image2 24

For the coastal areas of the Thai seas, spanning over 3,000 kilometers, including both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, recognized for their amazing splendor and abundance in the natural world, they are fantastic travel destinations for travelers across the world. These areas have contributed significantly to the country, generating up to 1.21 trillion baht in the past year. Moreover, they play a crucial role in fostering the economic growth of the coastal region through various industries such as coastal and deep-sea fisheries, land development, tourism-related activities, and associated services.

This encompasses government services for the public, as well as tourists, including public utilities, port services, and various types of water transport like ferries, yachts, and speedboats. It also involves businesses in the hotel, restaurant, and various tour services sectors. Therefore, the management of the network quality in the coastal and maritime areas, known as SEA COVERAGE, has been a primary mission for us to support the optimal economic growth of these coastal regions.”

image5 11

Mr. Wasit elaborated on the development of digital infrastructure in the maritime area, stating, “Expanding the SEA COVERAGE, poses significant challenges due to the unique geographical features, ranging from coastal areas, islands, and extending to the open sea, including energy sources. This requires our engineering team to apply skills and experience in designing the architecture of the network. It involves integrating transmission systems and selecting innovative, eco-friendly energy solutions that align with the geography and behaviors of customers in each sector.

This ensures that the AIS 5G intelligence network is not only communication-ready but also capable of meeting the digital experiences of customers and businesses in every segment. We can categorize users based on behavior and geographical location, allowing us to tailor the network to address the specific needs of each group.”

Tourism Sector, covering over 95% of the usage area beyond tourists themselves, will benefit from the digital experience on the AIS 5G network. Government agencies, such as national parks and the Port Authority, as well as water police, can also connect to communication systems and digital services, including IoT and Tourism Smart Data, to facilitate services for both Thai and international tourists.

This extends to businesses like yacht and ferry services, where the AIS communication network provides continuous coverage along all routes. Introducing innovations like Super Cell, the network is now capable of transmitting signals between points over a maximum distance of more than 70 kilometers, as demonstrated in real-world testing starting today.

image4 18

Fisheries Sector and safety in the coastal areas of both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are of great importance. The fisheries industry plays a crucial role in the coastal economy, also known as the Ocean Economy. This includes both small-scale coastal and village fisheries, utilizing small boats for fishing within a range of approximately 3-12 nautical miles, as well as commercial or deep-sea fisheries that venture beyond the coastal fishing zone.

Both groups require effective communication for various purposes, including business transactions with fish buyers, ensuring safety, and maintaining contact with families onshore. Additionally, this encompasses the responsibilities of state authorities, including the military and the coast guard, who oversee maritime security. AIS is capable of providing comprehensive coverage and services in these areas.

image6 9

Local Community Sector, situated along the coastline and on islands, has developed a network covering over 98% of service users. This includes both mobile and high-speed internet services that cater to the business needs of local entrepreneurs. The digital infrastructure has elevated local businesses and public utilities to a higher level, responding to the demands of the community.

Mr. Wasit concluded by stating, “We sincerely hope that the quality of AIS SEA COVERAGE will be ready for the crucial upcoming period at the end of this year when both domestic and international tourists will be traveling for vacations. This period marks the peak of the tourism industry, reinforcing the growth and resilience of the coastal economy moving forward.”

BEIJING (AP) — An overnight earthquake killed at least 127 people in a cold and mountainous region in northwestern China, the country’s state media reported Tuesday.

Search and rescue operations were underway in Gansu and neighboring Qinghai provinces. The earthquake left more than 500 people injured, severely damaged houses and roads, and knocked out power and communication lines, according to media reports.

The magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck near the boundary between the two provinces at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (six miles) just before midnight on Monday, the China Earthquake Networks Center said. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the magnitude at 5.9.

State broadcaster CCTV said 113 were confirmed dead in Gansu and another 536 injured in the province. Fourteen others were killed and 198 injured in Qinghai, in an area north of the epicenter, according to the People’s Daily, the Communist Party’s official mouthpiece.

The earthquake was felt in much of the surrounding area, including Lanzhou, the Gansu provincial capital, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of the epicenter. Photos and videos posted by a student at Lanzhou University showed students hastily leaving a dormitory building and standing outside with long down jackets over their pajamas.

“The earthquake was too intense,” said Wang Xi, the student who posted the images. “My legs went weak, especially when we ran downstairs from the dormitory.”

The quake struck in Gansu’s Jishishan county, about 5 kilometers (3 miles) from the provincial boundary with Qinghai. The epicenter was about 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) southwest of Beijing, the Chinese capital. There were nine aftershocks by 10 a.m., about 10 hours after the initial earthquake, the largest one registering a magnitude of 4.1, a Gansu official said.

The remote and mountainous area is home to several predominantly Muslim ethnic groups and near some Tibetan communities. Geographically, it is in the center of China, though the area is commonly referred to as the northwest, as it is at the northwestern edge of China’s more populated plains.

Tents, folding beds and quilts were being sent to the disaster area, state broadcaster CCTV said. It quoted Chinese leader Xi Jinping as calling for an all-out search and rescue effort to minimize the casualties. The overnight low in the area was minus 15 to minus 9 degrees Celsius (5 to 16 degrees Fahrenheit), the China Meteorological Administration said.

At least 4,000 firefighters, soldiers and police officers were dispatched in the rescue effort, and the People’s Liberation Army Western Theatre set up a command post to direct its work.

Han, the Gansu spokesperson, said the rescue work was proceeding in an orderly manner and asked people to avoid going to the quake-hit areas to prevent traffic jams that could hinder the effort.

A video posted by the Ministry of Emergency Management showed emergency workers in orange uniforms using rods to try to move heavy pieces of what looked like concrete debris at night. Other nighttime videos distributed by state media showed workers lifting out a victim and helping a slightly stumbling person to walk in an area covered with light snow.

Middle school student Ma Shijun ran out of his dormitory barefoot without even putting on a coat, according to a Xinhua report. It said the strong tremors left his hands a bit numb, and that teachers quickly organized the students on the playground.

CCTV reported that there was damage to water and electricity lines, as well as transportation and communications infrastructure.

Earthquakes are somewhat common in the mountainous area of western China that rises up to form the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau.

Last year in September, at least 74 people were reported killed in a 6.8 magnitude earthquake that shook China’s southwestern province of Sichuan, triggering landslides and shaking buildings in the provincial capital of Chengdu, where 21 million residents were under a COVID-19 lockdown.

China’s deadliest earthquake in recent years was a 7.9 magnitude quake in 2008 that killed nearly 90,000 people in Sichuan. The tremor devastated towns, schools and rural communities outside Chengdu, leading to a years-long effort to rebuild with more resistant materials.

How Dating Apps/Dating Website Can Lower Self-esteem

The increasing use of dating apps/dating websites has been associated with a decline in self-esteem according to the psychologist study.  Bangkok Matching often emphasized that before loving someone else, individuals must first learn to love themselves correctly.

The key to this self-love is having “self-esteem,” defined as having self-respect, accepting oneself in various aspects, recognizing one’s self-worth, and being confident in one’s abilities. Self-esteem encompasses self-respect, decision-making in life and relationships, and serves as a cornerstone for a healthy mental state, predicting success in life through one’s worldview, thinking, and perception.

Individuals with high self-esteem are perceived as confident and capable in various aspects of life. They handle work responsibilities well, manage their relationships effectively, and exude confidence in their abilities.

This confidence shields them from becoming subservient to toxic relationships. This is because individuals with high self-esteem possess the potential for positive thinking, decisive actions, and a proactive approach to life, increasing their likelihood of success compared to those lacking self-respect or confidence in their abilities.

In a research article focusing on the attitudes of the millennial generation in Thailand using dating apps/dating websites conducted by Thammasat University, it was found that some people used dating apps to boost their confidence and fulfill emotional needs.

Bangkok Matching observed that individuals often turn to dating apps to enhance their self-esteem. When initiating conversations and starting relationships through these dating apps, individuals experience a boost in confidence, similar to a self-rating mechanism.

However, tying one’s confidence to the use of dating apps can have consequences. As individuals gain confidence through these dating platforms, it can also be diminished. This is particularly true in apps where people make rapid judgments based on profile pictures or engage in brief conversations.

Some individuals become engrossed in conversations, assuming that the other person is genuinely interested and confident about the connection, only to find them disappearing without a trace. Such experiences lead to waiting, confusion, and ultimately a sense of loss, contributing to self-doubt and a decline in self-esteem.

Main Reasons Online Dating Apps/Dating Websites could Lower Self-esteem:

  1. Continuous External Judgment: The primary reason for a decline in self-esteem is the constant external judgment individuals face when using dating apps. The initial decision to engage with someone is often based on external appearances – profile pictures, introductory videos, and written bios. People make rapid judgments, deciding whether someone is interesting or worth pursuing within seconds. Knowing that one is continuously subjected to such evaluations from a large group can lead individuals to reshape themselves, unintentionally projecting an image that may not align with their true selves.
  2. Comparisons with Others: Even if there were no external judgments, the nature of dating apps encourages constant comparison with others. Seeing attractive profiles or those seemingly leading interesting lives can make individuals feel inadequate. The act of swiping left or right based on these comparisons may lead individuals to question their own worth and position in the dating pool. Comparing oneself to others in the dating app environment can generate negative emotions, contributing to stress, self-doubt, and a diminished sense of self.
  3. Neglecting Self-care for Love: The convenience of dating apps allows individuals to spend extensive amounts of time searching for love. This pursuit may lead them to neglect self-care and well-being. Believing that their profile is acceptable and attractive enough, individuals may forego personal development and self-improvement. The continuous search for external validation through the dating apps might make individuals forget the importance of self-love and personal growth, as genuine love may find its way without the need for constant app-driven searching.
  4. Impact of Rejection: Experiencing rejection, whether it be through lack of responses or being blocked after initiating contact, can significantly impact self-esteem. Receiving little to no feedback from others on the dating apps, or being rejected even before a conversation begins, can lead to negative self-perceptions. The repetitiveness of rejection can instill feelings of inadequacy, and individuals may start to blame themselves, thinking they are not good enough or appealing to the people they are interested in.

In conclusion, while dating apps/dating websites offer a convenient way to connect with potential partners, individuals should be mindful of their impact on self-esteem. Continuous external judgments, comparisons with others, neglecting self-care for the sake of love, and the potential for rejection can contribute to a decline in self-esteem. Balancing the use of dating apps with a focus on self-love, personal growth, and genuine connections can help individuals maintain a healthy sense of self-worth and confidence

Dangers Arising from Low Self-esteem

Persistently lacking self-esteem is akin to a prolonged illness left untreated, leading to almost irreparable consequences. Bangkok Matching has compiled information on the detrimental effects of relying on others to bolster one’s self-esteem, transforming individuals into those lacking self-confidence, often without self-awareness. The three main underlying causes are outlined as follows:

  1. Falling into the grip of anxiety disorders or depression and experiencing emotional instability. The absence of self-esteem is analogous to losing the central core in one’s psyche, potentially giving rise to various adverse effects. This can begin with a lack of confidence in communication, dressing, and living with others, as the fear of making mistakes or facing rejection prevails, resulting in heightened stress and anxiety.
  2. Feeling socially disconnected or unwilling to engage in social activities due to the loss of self-confidence. Social interaction, viewed as establishing relationships with those around us, becomes daunting when one has lost confidence. Opening up to new experiences becomes intimidating, as the fear of non-acceptance and the inability to connect with others prevents the initiation of healthy relationships.
  3. A pervasive sense of wrongdoing, indicating severe self-doubt. Individuals with low self-esteem often lack the confidence to express their opinions, assuming their thoughts are incorrect. This can make them vulnerable to exploitation by those with ill intentions or lead them into toxic relationships where they are easily manipulated, controlled, and abused.

Bangkok Matching emphasizes the significance of this issue, underscoring that dating apps serve a purpose beyond mere enjoyment and excitement. While the thrill of meeting new people persists, the company warns of potential psychological dangers for those with sensitive mental states.

Bangkok Matching, a high-end matchmaking service, reiterates the importance of safeguarding one’s mental well-being, self-confidence, self-respect, and self-love. Rejections are a part of life, similar to job hunting, and should not erode one’s confidence.

Therefore, for those using dating apps, the advice is to establish a strong foundation, preventing oneself from being treated as an easily expendable plaything and ensuring that rejections on the dating apps do not undermine self-confidence or self-respect.

Enjoy the ride.
