PATTAYA — Police arrested a 39-year-old Chinese national, Mr. Zhang, after his Toyota Alphard van caused a devastating multi-vehicle collision that killed one person on Thep Prasit Road in Pattaya City, Chonburi Province, on Thursday night.
The fatal crash claimed the life of Mr. Sahaprom, 30, whose black MG car was hit and overturned in front of a gas station on Thep Prasit Soi. Witnesses reported that Zhang showed no emotion or signs of shock after the accidents. The crash also damaged seven cars, including a black Chevrolet Cruze, a black Suzuki sedan, a bronze Mitsubishi Pajero SUV, and five motorcycles nearby.
The trail of destruction continued about 200 meters down the road, where Zhang’s vehicle struck a black Suzuki sedan, sending it spinning into a residential building and injuring two foreign tourists. A bronze Mitsubishi Pajero SUV was also damaged in the incident.
During questioning at Pattaya City Police Station, Police Colonel Nawin Teerawit said Zhang claimed he was drowsy and fatigued before the accident. After the initial collision, he panicked and continued driving, causing multiple subsequent crashes. While alcohol tests were negative, authorities are awaiting drug test results from Bang Lamung Hospital.
More than 10 victims gathered at the police station for preliminary discussions and future negotiations. Concerned about potential evasion of responsibility, the victims have formed a LINE group chat to discuss legal proceedings.
Investigation revealed that Zhang, who previously held a work visa in Pattaya, had re-entered Thailand on a tourist visa after his work permit expired. Sources indicate he holds shares in local car rental and pub businesses. Those close to him reported he habitually used his phone while driving and had argued with his girlfriend on the day of the incident.
Police have charged Zhang with reckless driving causing death and property damage, with additional charges possible as the investigation continues.
