PHUKET — Tourists welcomed the New Year with excitement after a green sea turtle came ashore to lay a large number of eggs on Karon Beach in Phuket.
At about 11 am on Jan. 3, 2026, Thai and foreign tourists gathered to watch as the adult female turtle emerged onto the sand at Karon Beach, in Karon subdistrict of Phuket’s Muang district.
After completing the nesting process, the turtle used her rear flippers to sweep sand over the nest, packing it down to conceal the eggs before crawling back into the sea.
Lifeguards stationed at Karon Beach later secured the nesting site by placing wooden stakes and rope around the area to prevent disturbance. They then notified the Karon municipality, which coordinated with officials from the Rare and Endangered Marine Animals Group under the Upper Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre in Wichit, Muang district.
Authorities are expected to monitor and protect the nest as part of ongoing marine conservation efforts.
