Drunk tourist smashes Pattaya officers’ vehicle

Drunk tourist smashes Pattaya officers’ vehicle

PATTAYA — Municipal officers in Pattaya detained a foreign tourist after he allegedly smashed an official vehicle while in a drunken state.

At about 01:20 on 21 January 2026, Pattaya municipal officers took the unidentified foreign man into custody and handed him over to investigators at Pattaya City Police Station. The suspect was reportedly heavily intoxicated when he damaged an officers’ car during a routine patrol along Soi 6, Pattaya Beach.

Udon Woratham, a Pattaya municipal officer, said the incident occurred as officers were driving through the middle of Soi 6. The foreign man suddenly became aggressive and approached the patrol vehicle, striking it without any apparent provocation. Officers exited the vehicle, restrained him and brought him to police.

Police initially attempted to question the suspect but were unable to communicate with him as he was severely intoxicated and incoherent. He was placed in a holding cell to sober up before further questioning and legal proceedings.

CCTV shows German tourist stealing cash at Phuket spa

PHUKET — Closed-circuit television footage showing a German tourist allegedly stealing cash from a spa in central Phuket has been widely shared online.

On 20 January 2026, the Facebook page “โหดจัง จังหวัดภูเก็ต” posted a CCTV clip recorded inside Thanya Spa and Massage on Ranong Road in Talat Nuea subdistrict, Mueang Phuket district. The footage shows a foreign male tourist entering the spa while no staff were stationed at the front counter.

In the video, the man is seen sitting and waiting for a short time before standing up, walking to the cashier’s counter and pulling open the cash drawer. He then takes cash from inside. A staff member later approaches him. The incident occurred at about 17:00.

Reporters later learned that Thanabat Pha Saeng, 32, acting on behalf of Piyawong Serisetiap, 35, an authorised director of Thanya Spa and Massage Co Ltd, filed a police complaint with investigators at Mueang Phuket Police Station. The business is located at 15 Ranong Road, Talat Nuea, Mueang Phuket district.

Thanabat said that at about 17:06 on the same day, the spa reviewed its CCTV footage and identified the suspect as a German tourist named Mr. Loszlo, whose details appeared on the service registration form. He is accused of stealing 2,000 baht in cash from the spa’s drawer while the cashier was away from the counter.

The incident came to light after staff found that the day’s cash takings did not match the system records, causing financial loss. The spa has reported the case to police so the suspect can be traced and prosecuted under the law.

ASEAN won’t endorse election in military-ruled Myanmar, Malaysia says

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — The Association of Southeast Asian Nations will not endorse elections in military-ruled Myanmar, Malaysia’s foreign minister said Tuesday, citing concerns over the lack of inclusive and free participation.

Myanmar’s military-backed political party appeared headed for a parliamentary majority after the second round of voting earlier this month in the country’s first general election since the army ousted a civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021. The takeover triggered widespread opposition that has grown into a civil war.

Human rights and opposition groups say the polls were neither free nor fair and are an effort by the military to legitimize its rule.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan told Parliament that ASEAN leaders decided at their summit in October not to send observers to Myanmar because conditions for a credible election were not met, though some member countries chose to do so individually. Myanmar’s Information Ministry said last month that ASEAN members Cambodia and Vietnam were among several nations that sent observers.

Mohamad Hasan said ASEAN has made clear that the election must be conducted with comprehensive and free participation, rather than being held in phases or under restrictive conditions that bar certain candidates.

“We didn’t send observers and by virtue of that, we don’t certify the election,” he said. His comments were the first clear statement from the 11-member regional bloc that it will not recognize election results.

ASEAN has repeatedly urged Myanmar’s military government to implement a peace plan that it had agreed on, which includes ending violence, allowing humanitarian access and holding inclusive dialogue with all parties. ASEAN suspended Myanmar’s military leaders from attending its summits but such efforts have been limited by divisions in the bloc, with some favoring engagement and others urging stronger pressure on Myanmar generals.

Final results for all seats in national and regional legislatures are expected to be announced this month.

A signal with meaning, True brings mobile connectivity to Ban Laosu Nok, unlocking better living in remote Lampang

True Corporation is driving the expansion of digital infrastructure to reduce connectivity gaps in remote areas, bringing reliable communication access to communities across the nation. The company has successfully installed and activated mobile network services in Ban Laosu Nok, a remote mountain village that had previously been beyond the reach of mobile coverage. This milestone represents a meaningful step toward narrowing the digital divide and improving quality of life for Akha and Mien ethnic communities living in Thailand’s remote and underserved regions.

S 166174785

Ban Laosu Nok is a small community of around 20 households, with approximately 60 residents including children, adults, and the elderly. Surrounded by mountainous terrain and forest, access to the village requires traveling along steep and winding mountain roads. While simplicity and tranquility define daily life here, remoteness has long meant severe limitations in communication, persisting for more than 31 years since the village was first established.

In the past, making a single phone call was never easy. Villagers often had to walk uphill to higher ground or travel to distant neighboring villages just to get a mobile signal, often for only a few minutes of conversation. Contacting hospitals, government agencies, or even speaking with family members working far away depended largely on timing and luck. For this community, the absence of mobile signal was not merely an inconvenience. It posed serious risks during illness and emergencies, and resulted in missed opportunities in education and livelihoods.

S 166174797

The Day True’s Signal Arrived, Life Began to Change

When True Corporation’s team installed the mobile base station and activated network services for the first time, the most immediate change was not high-speed internet, but the ability to make and receive calls instantly from home. Phones rang without villagers having to leave the village. Voices were clear. Communication that once required patience and effort became immediate and reliable.

S 166174796 0

The network deployment was led by Mr. Thongchai Kwanphut, Head of Network Rollout and Field Operation, together with the field operations team. To ensure confidence in real-world connectivity, the team conducted live testing, including video calls between villagers and True Corporation executives: Mr. Sigve Brekke, Group Chief Executive Officer; Mr. Khurrum Ashfaque, Chief Network Officer; and Mr. Manat Manavutiveth, Chief Customer Experience and Retail Officer. The demonstration confirmed that Ban Laosu Nok is now connected to the world beyond the mountains.

Mobile Signal as Tangible Safety and Quality of Life

With mobile communication no longer an obstacle, emergency reporting, hospital contact, and requests for assistance can now be made significantly faster. Internet access that comes with mobile connectivity allows villagers to stay informed, access news, and remain connected to the outside world, no longer isolated from society as before.

From Forest to Coffee to Community Income

Most residents of Ban Laosu Nok are farmers, primarily cultivating coffee while caring for and restoring the surrounding forest to preserve natural resources and build sustainable livelihoods. With mobile connectivity now available, agricultural activities are no longer confined to physical farmland alone. Farmers can directly contact buyers, monitor market prices, communicate with customers, and even trade their products independently through mobile phones.

S 166174787

Beyond market access, internet connectivity has also opened the door to knowledge. Villagers can search for information, learn new techniques, and continuously improve the quality of their coffee cultivation.

The community has also come together to establish the Ban Laosu Nok Coffee Community Enterprise Group, aiming to improve coffee quality, add value, and return income to the village. Mobile connectivity is therefore not merely a communication tool, but a critical enabler of livelihoods, market access, and long-term economic opportunity.

Children’s Opportunities and a Clearer Future

For children in Ban Laosu Nok, mobile connectivity opens a new door to learning. From education once confined to small classrooms in nearby village schools, they can now access online learning resources, watch instructional videos, submit homework, and explore knowledge from beyond their community. Many children have begun speaking seriously about their dreams, envisioning broader life paths and future possibilities.

True’s Commitment to Bridging the Digital Divide

Mr. Khurrum Ashfaque, Chief Network Officer of True Corporation Plc., said, “True places strong emphasis on reducing the digital divide and creating equal access for everyone. We are committed to expanding digital infrastructure into rural, remote, and underserved areas across the country. For Ban Laosu Nok, we deployed the 900 MHz low-band spectrum, which offers wide coverage and is well suited to mountainous and valley terrain. This enables communities that previously lacked access to connect to communications and the internet. We will continue developing network coverage in both urban and rural areas to ensure that everyone can access the digital world equally.”

Connectivity and Economic Growth

Research by the World Bank and multiple global studies indicate a strong correlation between broadband or high-speed internet access and economic growth. Findings show that every 10 percent increase in internet penetration can contribute approximately 0.25 to 1.4 percent growth in GDP across many countries worldwide.

S 166174786

True Corporation’s network expansion into rural and remote communities such as Ban Laosu Nok is therefore not merely about improving connectivity, but a long-term investment in closing the digital divide and creating sustainable economic opportunity. The approach aligns with the principle of “leaving no one behind” and supports inclusive national development by ensuring digital services are accessible and affordable for all.

Voices from the Community as Opportunity Arrives

Mr. Somchai Phongthanwalai, a resident of Ban Laosu Nok, said, “Today, we are very happy that Ban Laosu Nok finally has mobile signal. In the past, life was very difficult. In emergencies, we could not call a doctor and had to walk up the mountain or travel to other villages. Now we can make calls directly from home. It is much more convenient. With mobile phones and internet, we can read news, learn about the outside world, and gain knowledge about farming. Making a living has become easier. We can call traders, check prices, negotiate, and even sell products ourselves through mobile phones. Mobile phones are not just for communication. They truly improve our lives, our livelihoods, and help us see a better future.”

S 166174789 0

The Beginning of Broader Opportunities

For Ban Laosu Nok, mobile connectivity is not simply technology. It marks the beginning of better quality of life, greater safety, and new opportunities in education and livelihoods. Seamless communication supports learning, work, healthcare, and daily life with greater confidence and hope.

And on the day phones begin ringing without the need to search for signal, the villagers of Ban Laosu Nok know that this small connection is opening the door to a much wider world.

Bangkok steps up mpox surveillance and hospital readiness

Bangkok steps up mpox surveillance and hospital readiness

BANGKOK — 20 January 2026, Bangkok health authorities are stepping up surveillance and preparedness to prevent the spread of mpox, with all city-run hospitals ordered to heighten monitoring and rapidly isolate suspected cases, an official said.

Kriengkrai Tangjitramaneesakda, director of the Medical Service Department, said the department is closely tracking the situation and has instructed all hospitals under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to screen patients in emergency rooms and outpatient departments. Specialised clinics, including those for sexually transmitted infections, dermatology and HIV care, have also been placed on alert.

Suspected cases must be sent for laboratory confirmation through the Urban Disease Prevention and Control Institute, with disease investigations launched immediately to curb any spread, he said. Sirindhorn Hospital has been designated to operate an emerging disease control centre to monitor and manage the mpox situation closely. Patients with suspected symptoms are to be isolated at once and reported to senior officials and the Ministry of Public Health.

Authorities urged people who have had close contact with suspected mpox patients — including contact within 1 metre without a face mask or providing care — to monitor themselves for symptoms for 21 days. Warning signs include rashes, blisters or pustules on the genitals or anus, or on the hands, feet, chest, face or mouth, as well as fever and swollen lymph nodes behind the ears, in the neck or groin. Anyone with such symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

Kriengkrai warned that people with weakened immune systems or underlying health conditions face a higher risk of severe complications such as pneumonia or death. Suspected cases will be isolated and reported under established guidelines.

The department is also campaigning to raise public awareness on prevention, urging people to avoid close contact with others outside their homes, not to share food or personal items, practise safe sex and observe whether those they meet show signs of illness. Wearing face masks can significantly reduce the risk of infection, he said.

While vaccination against smallpox can reduce the risk of mpox infection, it is recommended only for people with occupational exposure or close contact with infected individuals or animals. Vaccination can also be given within 14 days after exposure.

People with symptoms can seek care at any of the 24 Bangkok Gender Diversity Health Clinics or consult doctors via the “Doctor BMA” telemedicine application. Further information is available through the Bangkok health hotline at 1646, which operates 24 hours a day.

Phuket police arrest Russian cybercrime suspect

Phuket police arrest Russian cybercrime suspect

PHUKET — Police have arrested a 25-year-old Russian national suspected of involvement in a cybercrime gang and seized assets worth several hundred thousand baht, authorities said.

Acting under the direction of provincial police commander Maj. Gen. Sinlert Sukhum, officers from Kathu police station and the Phuket Provincial Police Investigation Division launched a crackdown on technology-related crime following reports of suspicious financial transactions.

Police said that at about 17:00 on 12 January 2026, Kathu police were alerted to an abnormal transaction involving a cash withdrawal of 110,900 baht from a Siam Commercial Bank ATM in Kathu district.

On 15 January 2026 at about 14:00, officers executed a search warrant issued by the Phuket Provincial Court and searched a targeted location in Kathu. They identified the suspect as Mr. Kairat Zhumagaliev, a Russian national, along with a Thai woman, Phatsaporn Permphon.

During the search, police seized 34 mobile phones, 27 ATM cards, one MacBook computer, 60,000 baht in cash, one motorcycle, one gold bracelet and a gold bar weighing 1 salung, or 3.811 gram.

On 17 January 2026, Kathu police, working with provincial investigators and Phuket immigration officers, arrested Zhumagaliev under an arrest warrant issued by the Lampang Provincial Court the same day.

He is charged with conspiracy to defraud the public and dishonestly or fraudulently inputting false computer data in a manner likely to cause damage to the public.

The suspect was arrested at a condominium in Kathu district and transferred, along with the seized evidence, to Kathu police investigators for further legal proceedings.

Hundreds of police seal off Hua Hin in hunt for suspect in hotel worker murder-robbery

HUA HIN — Police in Prachuap Khiri Khan province have launched a major manhunt, deploying more than 100 officers to seal off Hua Hin as they hunt for a suspect accused of killing a female hotel worker during a robbery in the town centre.

Provincial police commander Maj. Gen. Athorn Chinthong ordered the large-scale operation at noon on 20 January 2026, mobilising investigators from Hua Hin police, Region 7 police, provincial units and nearby stations under an operation dubbed “Hua Hin lockdown”.

news104447 kzDg0aXUvK1768891718

Police said the suspect allegedly attacked the victim with a metal pipe, killing her before fleeing with stolen property. The crime has sparked fear among residents and tourists in the popular resort town.

Officers have been conducting sweeping searches in high-risk areas, reviewing CCTV footage along possible escape routes, gathering intelligence and tracking mobile phone signals linked to the suspect. Police said the latest signal was traced to the Nong Khon community, raising suspicions that the suspect may still be hiding in the area.

Authorities have also coordinated with Cha-am police in neighbouring Phetchaburi province, warning that the area could be used as an escape route.

Police urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious individuals to the emergency hotline 191, available 24 hours a day.

Maj. Gen. Athorn cautioned the public about images circulating on social media allegedly showing the suspect dressed as a woman, saying the information appeared to originate solely from Facebook and could cause confusion.

news104447 QW92BCZdJo1768891718

Police said preliminary background checks show the suspect has a history of violent crimes in his home province of Nakhon Ratchasima, including assault, grievous bodily harm, trespass and sexual offences, with similar patterns of violence.

Investigators said they have gathered sufficient evidence and obtained an arrest warrant from the Hua Hin Provincial Court. The suspect faces charges including premeditated murder, murder with extreme cruelty, and murder committed to facilitate another crime, namely robbery, resulting in death.

Authorities said all units in Prachuap Khiri Khan have been placed on alert as the search continues, urging the public to prioritise safety and immediately inform police if the suspect is spotted.

Six countries confirm participation in Trump’s “Board of Peace”

Six countries have confirmed their participation in the “Board of Peace”, a new body established under an initiative by US President Donald Trump, following invitation letters sent to leaders of multiple countries.

So far, at least six countries have publicly agreed to join: Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Hungary, Argentina, Morocco and Belarus.

Many other recipients of the invitation, including Thailand, the executive branch of the European Union and Slovenia, have taken a similar position, saying they are still seeking to understand how the board would operate. They are also trying to clarify concerns over whether the body could become an organisation Trump intends to create as a replacement for the United Nations (UN), as some observers fear.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has also received an invitation from Trump. The Kremlin said it is studying the details and will seek clarity on all aspects through further contact with the United States.

Israel has likewise confirmed receiving an invitation to join Trump’s new board, which is expected to oversee the next phase of the peace plan for the Gaza Strip. Israeli officials said, however, it remains unclear whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accepted the invitation.

Opposition within Israel to the proposed board has become increasingly evident. Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s far-right finance minister, said the Board of Peace would be a disadvantageous arrangement for Israel and called for it to be dissolved.

Previously, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said the establishment of an executive committee tasked with implementing the board’s vision had not been coordinated with the Israeli government and ran counter to government policy, without elaborating on the objections.

Turkey, a key regional rival of Israel, is among the countries invited to join the board. Netanyahu said that despite differing views with the United States over the composition of the advisory committee that would oversee the next phase in Gaza, this would not harm his relationship with Trump. He reiterated that there must be no Turkish or Qatari troops in the Gaza Strip.

Olof Gill, spokesperson for the European Commission, said Commission President Ursula von der Leyen would discuss the situation in Gaza with other EU leaders. Gill did not say whether the invitation had been accepted, but said the Commission wanted to be involved in developing a comprehensive plan to end the conflict in Gaza.

An official close to French President Emmanuel Macron said France currently has no plans to join the Board of Peace, despite receiving an invitation, as the proposal raises questions, particularly regarding respect for UN principles and structures.

It remains unclear how many national leaders have been invited to join the board. The wide distribution of invitations, including to countries that are themselves in conflict, has raised questions about the board’s authority, mandate and decision-making processes. It is also unclear what role Israel would play in a body tasked with implementing a ceasefire agreement that directly concerns Israel.

Language in Trump’s invitation letter stating that the organisation would “embark on a bold new approach in resolving global conflict” has fuelled speculation that the board could act as a rival to the UN Security Council, the UN’s most powerful body, established after the Second World War.

The United States is expected to announce the official list of Board of Peace members in the coming days, likely during the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
