King Issues 2019 New Year’s Card

BANGKOK — His Majesty King Vajiralongkorn on Sunday issued a New Year’s Greeting Card to the public.

The card includes images of photo of him holding hands with his mother, Queen Sirikit, as his late father, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, looks down from the upper left corner, surrounded by a yellow aura.

On another page, the card contains one of the king’s sketches showing a happy family and the following message:

“Sending Happy Happiness for 2019 with a loving heart, with a pure heart for this new year to be a year of brightness, physical and mental happiness. For bright mind and emotional strength, for faith in creating happiness for oneself and everyone. With good wishes, a year of happiness and always.”

Chao Phraya and Saen Saep Canal to Get Air-Con Boat Taxis

BANGKOK — The operators of tourist boats on the Chao Phraya River announced they will launch air-conditioned commuter boats there and on the Khlong Saen Saep by early 2020.

Supapan Pichaironarongsongkram of the firm which operates the current river boats said the service would increase commuters’ use of the river and canal as viable routes.

“We want everyone to use public boat transport. … The company has operated for nearly 100 years and no boat has ever capsized. We want operators to compete more on quality and services,” Supapan said.

Commuters of the new air-conditioned boats will not have to bear the heat, rain and occasional splash of fetid canal water, Supapan said, adding that they will try to get included on the long-promised-but-forever-delayed universal transport ticket system planned for the Skytrain, subway and bus lines.

The operators plan to charge a minimum fare of 50 baht, however, which is roughly four times the current minimum fare for air-conditioned public buses. The current Chao Phraya boats cost 15 baht.

Supapan said she is aware that public transportation fares are state-regulated and urged understanding, given high petrol prices and the fact the planned boats will be made of aluminum instead of iron and wood to make them lighter and more fuel efficient.

She said the company plans to launch with four to six boats at the start.

Chinese Tourist Loses Arm in Sobering Reminder of Thai Road Safety

BANGKOK — Like many others, one Chinese tourist was looking to ring in the new year with a tropical respite. But as happens too often in these final weeks, her plans came to an abrupt end in a road accident that cost her an arm.

The Chinese woman recounted online in grisly detail the accident that befell her while traveling to Koh Chang on a family holiday in a Friday Weibo post picked up by Thai netizens.

“My fourth surgery is tomorrow,” she wrote in the original post.

According to Thai translators, the woman said she was on the way to the island when the driver “suddenly turned” and crashed into a tree. She was the only one injured.

Her account drew fresh attention both at home and abroad to Thailand’s treacherous roads at the beginning of one of their deadliest periods – the New Year’s holidays. The woman is followed by more than 127,000 people online, and her post drew many comments expressing both sympathy and shared anecdotes of Thai road scares.

“Whether the vehicle was operated by Chinese or Thai drivers, we all know that roads in some areas in Thailand are very dangerous, full of potholes and badly lit. In China, they’re very good at road maintenance. Roads in tourist cities have no holes, are well lit and have CCTVs,” wrote the admin of the Aizhong page, which posted the translated post.

Last year, 423 people died on Thai roads between Dec. 28 and Jan. 3, dubbed the year-end “seven dangerous days.”

Thai tourism has been trying to recover from its first decline in Chinese arrivals since the sinking of a ferry this past July.

NASA To Fly By Solar System’s Icy Edge on New Year Day

This image made available by NASA in March 2017 shows Pluto illuminated from behind by the sun as the New Horizons spacecraft travels away from it at a distance of about 120,000 miles (200,000 kilometers). (NASA/Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory/Southwest Research Institute via AP)

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The spacecraft team that brought us close-ups of Pluto will ring in the new year by exploring an even more distant and mysterious world.

NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft will zip past the scrawny, icy object nicknamed Ultima Thule (TOO-lee) soon after the stroke of midnight.

One billion miles beyond Pluto and an astounding 4 billion miles from Earth (1.6 billion kilometers and 6.4 billion kilometers), Ultima Thule will be the farthest world ever explored by humankind. That’s what makes this deep-freeze target so enticing; it’s a preserved relic dating all the way back to our solar system’s origin 4.5 billion years ago. No spacecraft has visited anything so primitive.

“What could be more exciting than that?” said project scientist Hal Weaver of Johns Hopkins University, part of the New Horizons team.

Lead scientist Alan Stern of Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, expects the New Year’s encounter to be riskier and more difficult than the rendezvous with Pluto: The spacecraft is older, the target is smaller, the flyby is closer and the distance from us is greater.

NEW HORIZONS

NASA launched the spacecraft in 2006; it’s about the size of a baby grand piano. It flew past Pluto in 2015, providing the first close-up views of the dwarf planet. With the wildly successful flyby behind them, mission planners won an extension from NASA and set their sights on a destination deep inside the Kuiper Belt. As distant as it is, Pluto is barely in the Kuiper Belt, the so-called Twilight Zone stretching beyond Neptune. Ultima Thule is in the Twilight Zone’s heart.

ULTIMA THULE

This Kuiper Belt object was discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2014. Officially known as 2014 MU69, it got the nickname Ultima Thule in an online vote. In classic and medieval literature, Thule was the most distant, northernmost place beyond the known world. When New Horizons first glimpsed the rocky iceball in August it was just a dot. Good close-up pictures should be available the day after the flyby.

ARE WE THERE YET?

New Horizons will make its closest approach in the wee hours of Jan. 1 — 12:33 a.m. EST. The spacecraft will zoom within 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers) of Ultima Thule, its seven science instruments going full blast. The coast should be clear: Scientists have yet to find any rings or moons around it that could batter the spacecraft. New Horizons hurtles through space at 31,500 mph (50,700 kph), and even something as minuscule as a grain of rice could demolish it. “There’s some danger and some suspense,” Stern said at a fall meeting of astronomers. It will take about 10 hours to get confirmation that the spacecraft completed — and survived — the encounter.

POSSIBLY TWINS

Scientists speculate Ultima Thule could be two objects closely orbiting one another. If a solo act, it’s likely 20 miles (32 kilometers) long at most. Envision a baked potato. “Cucumber, whatever. Pick your favorite vegetable,” said astronomer Carey Lisse of Johns Hopkins. It could even be two bodies connected by a neck. If twins, each could be 9 miles to 12 miles (15 kilometers to 20 kilometers) in diameter.

MAPPING MISSON

Scientists will map Ultima Thule every possible way. They anticipate impact craters, possibly also pits and sinkholes, but its surface also could prove to be smooth. As for color, Ultima Thule should be darker than coal, burned by eons of cosmic rays, with a reddish hue. Nothing is certain, though, including its orbit, so big that it takes almost 300 of our Earth years to circle the sun. Scientists say they know just enough about the orbit to intercept it.

COMPARING FLYBYS

New Horizons will get considerably closer to Ultima Thule than it did to Pluto: 2,220 miles versus 7,770 miles (3,500 kilometers vs. 12,500 kilometers). At the same time, Ultima Thule is 100 times smaller than Pluto and therefore harder to track, making everything more challenging. It took 4 ½ hours, each way, for flight controllers at Johns Hopkins’ Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland, to get a message to or from New Horizons at Pluto. Compare that with more than six hours at Ultima Thule.

WHAT’S NEXT

It will take almost two years for New Horizons to beam back all its data on Ultima Thule. A flyby of an even more distant world could be in the offing in the 2020s, if NASA approves another mission extension and the spacecraft remains healthy. At the very least, the nuclear-powered New Horizons will continue to observe objects from afar, as it pushes deeper into the Kuiper Belt. There are countless objects out there, waiting to be explored.

Pro-Prayuth Party Candidate Shot Dead Outside Home

A photo of Prao Babpan posted on his Facebook.

MUKDAHAN — Police said Sunday they’re investigating the apparent murder of a politician slated to run in the upcoming election for a pro-establishment party.

Investigators say they’ve yet to identify a suspect and haven’t ruled out any motive in the killing of New Alternative Party candidate Prao Babpan, according to police spokesman Krissana Pattanacharoen. Prao, 56, was found shot to death Thursday near his home in Mukdahan.

“The investigating officers have questioned a number of witnesses. Please give the police some time to investigate and bring the perpetrator to justice,” Col. Krissana said at a news conference, adding that the police chief is giving the case his full attention.

Party leader Rachen Trakulviang flew to the northeastern province yesterday to follow up on the case. Rachen, who has voiced support for junta chairman Prayuth Chan-ocha to serve another term as prime minister, told reporters he believes Prao’s killing could be politically motivated.

“One cannot rule out politics in his death,” Rachen said. “I wonder why the killing isn’t big news. It’s very unusual.”

Krissana said Prao was last seen by his family at home Wednesday night when he went outside to feed his dogs. Prao didn’t return and was later found dead with three gunshot wounds at about 7am the following day, the police spokesman said.

Soldiers Shot, Woman Killed in Fourth Day of Deep South Attacks

Security officers on Saturday inspect the site of a roadside bombing in Narathiwat province.

HAT YAI — Violence presumed carried out by Muslim separatists has hit southern Thailand for the fourth day in a row, with three paramilitary soldiers wounded and a female civilian shot dead Saturday.

The soldiers in Narathiwat province were hurt in an ambush of their pickup truck, while the woman was killed in Pattani province.

On Friday night, four people in Narathiwat were wounded by one of several bombs suspected of being planted by the Muslim insurgents, security officials said, and there was a shootout between security forces and suspected insurgents who attacked a defense outpost at a small rural village.

The bombs mostly targeted utility poles and caused a blackout in one village.

Nearby Songkhla province on Wednesday and Thursday nights experienced similar small bombing attempts, including two that damaged well-known statues at a popular beach but caused no casualties.

No arrests have been reported for any of the attacks.

Drive-by shootings, roadside ambushes and bombings of utility poles have been common tactics used by Muslim separatists who since 2004 have been engaged in an insurgency that has wracked Thailand’s deep south and left about 7,000 people dead.

The insurgency has mostly affected the three southernmost provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat, which have Muslim majorities in predominantly Buddhist Thailand. Songkhla, with a substantial Muslim population, has generally been spared the violence, though its biggest city, Hat Yai, has suffered several bombings.

Muslim-Led Party Vows to Resume Saudi Ties

A southern Thai woman says goodbye to her family July 24, 2017, before leaving for hajj.

CHIANG MAI — The head of a young political party pledged Saturday to restore relations with Saudi Arabia if they win seats in the upcoming election.

Pichet Sathirachawala, leader of Prachathamthai Party – or the Thai People Justice Party, in its official English name – said he wants the Gulf State kingdom to allow more Thais – up to 100,000 – to travel for hajj and seek work there. He also vowed to form cordial ties with the Islamic world.

“Muslims currently make up a third of the world’s population,” Pichet, who formerly led the Islamic Council of Thailand, told reporters. “I know what they want.”

Pichet spoke after his party, founded in March, opened a branch in the northern province of Chiang Mai. Citing his experience as a co-founder of the successful Thai Rak Thai Party, Pichet said he’s confident he can lead the country. He also envisioned Narathiwat Airport as a regional hub for travelers flying out to make hajj.

The decades-long enmity between the two kingdoms dates back to 1989 when a Thai gardener working in a Saudi royal palace allegedly stole a trove of jewels and other treasures before fleeing to Thailand.

Most of the jewels were never recovered, including the prized Blue Diamond. Two Saudi diplomats were later gunned down in Bangkok, and a Saudi businessman was abducted. In retaliation, Saudi Arabia froze ties with Thailand in 1990 and expelled Thai workers.

A criminal court in May 2015 cleared a group of policemen of kidnapping and murdering the businessman, Mohammad al-Ruwaili.
