BANGKOK (AP) — Thousands of protesters gathered in Thailand’s capital on Saturday to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, part of the brewing political turmoil set off by a leaked phone call with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Paetongtarn faces growing dissatisfaction over her handling of a recent border dispute with Cambodia involving an armed confrontation May 28. One Cambodian soldier was killed in a relatively small, contested area.

The recorded phone call with Hun Sen was at the heart of the demonstration Saturday and has set off a string of investigations in Thailand that could lead to Paetongtarn’s removal.

Outrage over the call mostly revolved around Paetongtarn’s comments toward an outspoken regional army commander and her perceived attempts to appease Hun Sen, the current Cambodian Senate president, to ease tensions at the border.

Protesters held national flags and signs as they occupied parts of the streets around the Victory Monument in central Bangkok. At a huge stage set up at the monument, speakers took turns expressing love for Thailand following the intensified border dispute. Protesters chanted, sang and danced to songs stoking nationalist sentiment.

Tatchakorn Srisuwan, 47, a guide from Surat Thani province, said he arrived in Bangkok by an overnight train to demand Paetongtarn’s resignation over the leaked call.

“From a heart of a Thai person, we’ve never had a prime minister who’s so weak,” he said. “We don’t want to invade anyone, but we want to say that we are Thai and we want to protect Thailand’s sovereignty.”

Many of the leading figures in the protest were familiar faces from a group popularly known as Yellow Shirts, whose clothing color indicates loyalty to the Thai monarchy. They are longtime foes of Paetongtarn’s father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who reportedly has a close relationship with Hun Sen.

Yellow Shirts rallies turned violent and led to military coups in 2006 and 2014, which respectively ousted the elected governments of Thaksin and Paetongtarn’s aunt, former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Hun Sen responds

Hun Sen on Saturday vowed to protect his country’s territory from foreign invaders and said the action by the Thai army was a serious violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, despite the country’s good will in attempting to resolve the border issue.

“This poor Cambodia has suffered from foreign invasion, war and genocide, been surrounded and isolated and insulted in the past, but now Cambodia has risen on an equal face with other countries,” Hun Sen told an audience of thousands at the 74th anniversary celebration of the founding of his long-ruling Cambodian People’s Party in the nation’s capital, Phnom Penh.

There is a long history of territorial disputes between the countries. Thailand is still rattled by a 1962 International Court of Justice ruling that awarded Cambodia the disputed territory where the historic Preah Vihear temple stands. There were sporadic though serious clashes there in 2011. The ruling from the U.N. court was reaffirmed in 2013, when Yingluck was prime minister.

Political fracture and investigations

The scandal has broken Paetongtarn’s fragile coalition government, costing her Pheu Thai Party the loss of its biggest partner, Bhumjaithai Party. Its departure left the 10-party coalition with 255 seats, just above the majority of the 500-seat house.

Paetongtarn also faces other investigations that could lead to her removal from office.

Sarote Phuengrampan, secretary-general of the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission, said Wednesday that his agency is investigating Paetongtarn for a serious breach of ethics over the Hun Sen phone call. He did not give a possible timeline for a decision.

Reports said the Constitutional Court could decide as early as next week whether it will take a petition requesting Paetongtarn’s removal due to the phone call, enabling the court to suspend her from duty pending an investigation. The prime minister said Tuesday she is not worried and is ready to give evidence to support her case.

“It was clear from the phone call that I had nothing to gain from it, and I also didn’t cause any damage to the country,” she said.

The court last year removed her predecessor from Pheu Thai over a breach of ethics. Thailand’s courts, especially the Constitutional Court, are considered a bulwark of the country’s royalist establishment, which has used them and nominally independent state agencies such as the Election Commission to cripple or sink political opponents.

Thailand Export-Import Index Rises Ahead of US Tariff Negotiations

BANGKOK — Countries around the world are trying to avoid retaliatory tariffs as part of former President Donald Trump’s trade policy stance, and global import and export activity has surged, pushing up Thailand’s trade value in May.

Phunphong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) and spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce, announced Thailand’s export and import price index for May 2025. Compared to the same period last year, both indices have increased due to higher global demand from trading partners. This is partly due to a rush of exports ahead of possible tariff hikes by the United States as well as a steady increase in imports for production purposes.

However, the Ministry of Commerce warned that several risk factors could impact Thailand’s future price growth, including global economic and trade uncertainties, ongoing geopolitical tensions, climate change, protectionist trade policies, and exchange rate volatility.

Export Price Index

In May 2025, the export price index stood at 111.0, an increase of 0.4% compared to the previous year. Key factors included a recovery in global demand for electronics and computer products as well as continued growth in processed food exports.

  • Industrial products rose by 1.6%, including gold (as a safe haven), computers and parts due to rush orders ahead of US tariffs and demand for AI and data centre infrastructure and air conditioning due to rising global temperatures and humidity.
  • Agro-industrial products increased by 1.4%, such as tinned fish and processed seafood (long shelf life and food safety), premium and functional pet food (health orientated) and soft drinks (growing health awareness).
  • The commodities that declined include: Minerals and fuels, down 15.8%, especially refined and crude oil, due to global oversupply and weakening demand. Agricultural products, down 4.0%, particularly rice (due to high global supply and price competition from India and Vietnam) and cassava products (due to falling demand from key markets such as China).

Import Price Index

The import price index reached 114.1 in May 2025, an increase of 1.4% compared to the previous year. This was largely due to the behaviour of domestic manufacturers importing raw materials and electronic equipment ahead of the full introduction of US tariffs.

Increases were seen across almost all categories:

  • Consumer goods, up 8.5%, including household electronics, pharmaceuticals, jewellery and fruit/vegetable products, due to increased domestic demand and tourism growth.
  • Raw materials and semi-finished goods, up 4.9%, especially gold (due to a weaker USD and tensions in the Middle East) and electronic components such as printed circuit boards (needed for domestic production). Fertiliser prices also rose due to higher production costs and increasing demand.
  • Capital goods, including electrical machinery, computers and related components, rose 4.3% in response to export production needs and global tech trends (AI and data centres). Vehicles and transport equipment also rose by 0.8%, driven by strong demand for auto parts for domestic assembly and export.
  • Fuel prices, on the other hand, fell by 14.6%, particularly for crude oil. This is in line with global trends and the expected oversupply, which exceeds global demand.

Outlook for June 2025

The positive factors that are likely to favour further growth in the price index include

  1. A short-term increase in Thai exports due to front-loading by trading partners ahead of the introduction of reciprocal tariffs.
  2. Continued growth in processed agricultural products.
  3. Sustained global demand for technology-related industrial goods.
  4. Rising production costs, which could drive prices up further.

However, the Ministry also warns of various risk factors:

  1. Economic slowdowns worldwide and in key trading partners.
  2. Ongoing geo-political conflicts in several regions.
  3. Uncertainty about the USA’s trade and customs policy.
  4. Oversupply of important agricultural goods.
  5. Increased price competition on the global markets.

Volatility of the baht and possible appreciation of the currency.

US Tariff Negotiations

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira posted on Facebook on June 27, explaining Thailand’s ongoing negotiations with the US over reciprocal tariffs.

pichai chun
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira meets with US Ambassador Robert Godec on June 27, ahead of his trip to negotiate with US trade representatives next week.

Thailand’s tariff negotiations with the United States have not yet been finalized, with detailed discussions currently underway with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).

Key points FM Pichai highlighted include:

Complex Negotiations: Multiple US agencies are involved, including the Commerce Department, USTR, and Treasury. Thailand must coordinate through two main agencies – the Fiscal Policy Office and Trade Negotiations Department – to handle negotiations at all levels.

Consultant Fees: Normal US consulting and lobbying rates range from $20,000-$300,000 monthly. Current reciprocal tariff negotiations command higher fees due to their urgency, competition with other countries, and Thailand’s billions of dollars in annual trade at stake.

Transparency: All foreign consulting contracts must be disclosed under US FARA (Foreign Agents Registration Act) laws on the Justice Department website.

High Stakes: Pichai warned that without proper assistance and strong negotiating tools, Thailand risks losing export markets and harming farmers and businesses. He emphasized that modern international policy requires technical understanding, careful attention, and timely decision-making.

BANGKOK — Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held a telephone discussion with French President Emmanuel Macron on June 27, where France agreed to help coordinate with Cambodia on bilateral talks to resolve border issues and support Thailand’s efforts to combat transnational crime and call center gangs.

According to Thai Government Spokesperson, beyond confirming intentions to elevate Thai-French relations to a strategic partnership level, a key focus of the conversation was Thailand’s efforts to ease tensions with Cambodia.

The Thai leader outlined the Thai-Cambodian border situation, emphasizing Thailand’s commitment to peaceful resolution with good faith, based on good neighborly friendship, ASEAN unity, and international law principles.

Thailand Starts Banning the Sale of Cannabis Without a Prescription

By JINTAMAS SAKSORNCHAI

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand has started banning the sale of cannabis to those without a prescription, three years after becoming the first country in Asia to decriminalize the plant.

The new order, signed by Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin earlier this week, came into effect Thursday after it was published in the Royal Gazette. It bans shops from selling cannabis to customers without a prescription and reclassifies cannabis buds as a controlled herb.

Sellers that violate the new order could face a maximum one-year jail term and a 20,000-baht ($614) fine.

The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine, in charge of enforcing regulations related to cannabis, held an online meeting Friday with officials across the country to prepare them for the change.

Officials said during the meeting that shops that are currently licensed can continue to operate but they must get their products only from pharmaceutical-grade farms that are certified by the department, and must declare sources of their products to authorities every month. Those farms must also acquire a license for selling cannabis. The order says shops can only sell a limited amount of cannabis to those with a prescription, enough for personal use in 30 days.

They also said the department is setting up clear guidelines for the prescription of cannabis and enforcement of the new regulations. They said they will give time for the shops to adjust, but did not say exactly how long that timeframe would be.

Chokwan “Kitty” Chopaka, a cannabis advocate who used to own a dispensary in Bangkok, said there is still a lot confusion about the new rules, with some officials themselves apparently unsure what to do.

“Owners are freaking out, a lot of them are scared,” she said.

The move to decriminalize in 2022 had boosted Thailand’s tourism and farming industries, and spawned thousands of shops.

But the country has faced public backlash over allegations that a lack of regulation made the drug available to children and caused addiction.

Treechada Srithada, spokesperson for the Health Ministry, said in a statement Thursday that cannabis use in Thailand would become “fully for medical purposes.”

She said shops that violate the order will be closed and the ministry will also tighten requirements for approval of a new license in the future. She said there are curently about 18,000 shops that hold a license to sell cannabis.

Chokwan argued that the rules were already in place, but what was lacking was the enforcement. She also said the abrupt change was politically motivated.

“We know we need regulation. We need control. The existing rule that is in the announcement previously needs to be enforced. Can we enforce that first? Before we move on to something that is harder and people don’t understand what’s going on,” she said.

The ruling Pheu Thai Party previously promised to criminalize the drug again, but faced strong resistance from its former partner in the coalition government, the Bhumjaithai Party, which supported decriminalization.

Bhumjaithai quit the coalition last week over a leaked phone call between Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and former Cambodian leader Hun Sen. Health Minister Somsak signed the new order just days after Bhumjaithai left the government.

The move to restrict cannabis sales came after officials last month revealed that cannabis smuggling cases involving tourists had soared in recent months. Somsak told reporters Tuesday he would like to relist cannabis as a narcotic in the future.

Thailand’s Office of the Narcotics Control Board said a study conducted by the agency last year found the number of people addicted to cannabis had spiked significantly after it was decriminalized.

A group of cannabis advocates said they will rally at the Health Ministry next month to oppose the change and any attempt to make it a criminal offense again to consume or sell cannabis.

BANGKOK — A Chinese national wanted in connection with the death of a 22-year-old Thai woman found dead in a Bangkok hotel has surrendered to police after fleeing to Laos for several months.

Mr. Douying, 37, turned himself in at Chok Chai Police Station on June 27 accompanied by his lawyer, following an arrest warrant issued on April 16, 2025. He faces charges including distribution of Category 1 narcotics (methamphetamine and MDMA), distribution of Category 2 psychotropic substances (ketamine), and negligent homicide.

Hotel Death Investigation

The case originated on the morning of February 10 when hotel staff in Ladprao district discovered an unresponsive woman identified as Airada. Initial police investigation found the deceased unclothed with no visible signs of physical trauma, but ketamine and “happy water” drugs were discovered at the scene.

Hotel records showed that Airada had checked in with the Chinese national at 11:16 PM the previous night. Mr. Douying reportedly alerted hotel staff about the woman’s condition before hastily departing after she was pronounced dead.

Investigation revealed chat messages indicating Airada had been hired through a modeling agency for a 4-5 hour service worth 6,000 baht ($184). The messages showed she expressed reluctance about drug use but was allegedly pressured to comply.

Arrests and Escape

On February 17, police arrested 18-year-old Ms. Panita, also known as “Alin,” a model who had recruited the victim for the job. She was charged with procuring prostitution. However, the Chinese suspect had already fled to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, prompting ongoing surveillance and pressure until his eventual surrender.

Police Colonel Pornthawee, chief of Chok Chai Police Station, said that during questioning, Douying denied the allegations. He admitted only to using drugs with Airada but claimed she consumed the substances voluntarily without coercion or threats from him.

The suspect has been remanded to investigators at Chok Chai Police Station for legal proceedings according to the law.

Thai Neighbor’s Spider-Man Rescue Saves South African Teacher from Fire

South African
A man climbs across the third-floor balcony back to his room after successfully waking his foreign neighbor to extinguish the fire at Soi Na Mueang, Chachoengsao Province, on June 26, 2025.

CHACHOENGSAO — A heroic neighbor climbed across apartment balconies to rescue a sleeping South African teacher after spotting flames erupting from his third-floor room in Chachoengsao province.

Police from Mueang Chachoengsao Station received reports of a fire at a commercial building offering room rentals in Soi Na Mueang, Na Mueang Sub-district, Mueang Chachoengsao District, around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday. Three fire trucks from Chachoengsao Municipality and rescue workers from Chachoengsao Rescue Unit were dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found flames blazing on a third-floor balcony and deployed hoses to combat the blaze. During the incident, a neighbor attempted to alert the occupant of the burning room but received no response. The man then made the daring decision to climb across the third-floor balcony to reach his neighbor’s unit, where a foreign language teacher resided, and knocked and shouted until the room’s owner finally woke up.

Power Bank Explosion Caused Blaze

Nattharit Nunpradech, a volunteer from Chachoengsao Rescue Unit who documented the incident, said the foreign teacher identified himself as Mr. Budhoo, a 43-year-old South African. At the time of the fire, he was asleep and was startled awake by the neighbor’s calls. Upon seeing the flames on his balcony, he rushed to fetch water to extinguish the fire.

Firefighters and rescue personnel subsequently inspected the building’s rooftop area around the fire’s origin to prevent the flames from spreading further. They discovered melted plastic debris in a dustpan.

spider save3
Melted plastic debris remains after a power bank explosion sparked the apartment fire in Chachoengsao Province.

The foreign teacher explained that the fire was caused by a damaged power bank he had discarded in the trash bin along with other waste and paper scraps. He hadn’t anticipated that the power bank would swell and explode, creating sparks that ignited the surrounding materials.

Officials believe the power bank exploded after being exposed to direct sunlight in the garbage container for several days, causing the internal battery to swell until it eventually exploded and caught fire.

Ezy Airlines Launches Inaugural Hat Yai-Betong Flight

Ezy Airlines inaugural flight EZT111 from Hat Yai arrives at Betong Airport on Friday, June 27, 2025.

YALA — Ezy Airlines made aviation history on Friday, June 27, 2025, with the launch of its inaugural flight EZT111 on the Hat Yai-Betong route, marking the return of commercial flights to Thailand’s border region after a nearly three-year hiatus.

The milestone flight carried Justice Minister Police General Tawee Sodsong and Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensi aboard a 12-seat Cessna Grand Caravan from Hat Yai International Airport to Betong Airport in Yala province. The two ministers presided over the inaugural flight ceremony, which drew a large crowd of attendees.

“This represents another crucial step that will enhance economic opportunities, travel accessibility, and tourism in the southern border provinces, particularly in Betong district, which sits at Thailand’s southernmost tip and is rich in natural potential, culture, and distinctive local identity,” said Minister Tawee.

ezyair 1
Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensi and Justice Minister Police General Tawee Sodsong disembark from a 12-seat Cessna Grand Caravan after arriving at Betong Airport in Yala province on Friday, June 27, 2025.

The new air service dramatically reduces travel time from the previous six-hour road journey to just 45 minutes, providing significant convenience for residents, tourists, and business travelers seeking faster and safer access to Betong district.

Thailand’s Shortest Commercial Flight Route

Thani Tharapak, Managing Director of M-Landarche Co., Ltd., explained that market research revealed significant growth in tourist arrivals to Betong and strong travel demand from local residents. He emphasized the potential of Betong Airport, describing it as a beautiful international facility the company aims to help reopen for the benefit of local communities through tourism promotion and convenient travel options.

After receiving its Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) from the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand, Ezy Airlines launched what will be Thailand’s shortest commercial flight route at 152 kilometers. The airline specializes in short-haul flights under 60 minutes, connecting major and secondary cities in southern Thailand using Hat Yai International Airport as its primary hub.

The new route transforms a challenging 250-kilometer road journey through 1,066 mountain curves, typically taking four hours, into a convenient one-hour flight. Initially operating on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, tickets are available through the airline’s website starting at 3,100 baht (excluding VAT).

Overcoming Historical Challenges

Despite Betong’s high tourism and economic potential, with an average of 1.6 million visitors annually, air connectivity from Bangkok to Betong Airport has faced significant limitations including aviation economics, infrastructure constraints, and market demand challenges.

Betong Airport previously operated during the Prayuth Chan-ocha administration, with its last commercial flight on October 28, 2022, before resuming commercial service today after a gap of approximately two years and eight months.

betong airport
Betong Airport resumes commercial service on June 27, 2025, after a gap of approximately two years and eight months.

Previous attempts by major commercial airlines to operate direct Don Mueang-Betong routes were discontinued due to high operational costs, particularly fuel and airport fees.

The airport lacks on-site refueling facilities, requiring aircraft to stop elsewhere for fuel, significantly increasing costs. Additionally, Betong’s 1,800-meter runway can only accommodate small aircraft such as ATRs or Cessnas.

This initiative represents an important step toward expanding travel options and promoting economic development in Thailand’s border regions while providing greater convenience for authorities, deep south residents, and domestic and international tourists.

Bruno Menard, a three-Michelin-starred chef from France, shared, “DINNER INCREDIBLE brings us together to celebrate the very best that Thailand has to offer, especially its extraordinary local ingredients. For this special menu, I chose to work with kaffir lime, curry paste, and coconut milk, as these ingredients are distinctive and carry rich, layered flavors that beautifully capture the charm of Thai cuisine.”

Thierry Voisin, another three-Michelin-starred chef from France, described his experience at “DINNER INCREDIBLE THAILAND 2025” as truly phenomenal.
