Celebrity Wild Elephant Probe Over Suspected Gunshot Wounds

Photos show two wounds on Plai Biang Lek's hindquarters, raising suspicions that he may have been shot.

NAKHON RATCHASIMA — A local politician allegedly threatened to shoot the elephant ‘Plai Biang Lek’ to drive wild elephants out of the area. The head of Khao Yai National Park calls in veterinarians to examine the wounds and announces legal action if the gunshot wounds are confirmed.

A Facebook page called “This is Khao Yai” recently posted photos and statements claiming that a local politician had used violence against a wild elephant roaming outside protected areas. The post warned that such actions, if left unchecked, could lead to the elephant becoming aggressive and potentially endangering people.

The elephant is ‘Plai Biang Lek,’ who made international headlines when he entered a grocery shop in Moo Si sub-district in search of food. This time Plai Biang Lek was spotted several kilometres outside the boundaries of Khao Yai National Park.

A well-known wild elephant from Khao Yai National Park, Plai Biang Lek, wanders into a local grocery store in Nakhon Ratchasima Province for an impromptu snacking session on June 2, 2025.

According to initial reports, the shooter is the younger brother of a local politician and he himself is a Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO) member. Volunteers managed to take photos of the shooter holding a gun and collected spent shell casings as evidence. These were handed over to the park authorities.

Community Response

The post caused great outrage among elephant lovers. Many of them demanded that the authorities prosecute the person responsible. Wild elephants are protected under Thailand’s Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act.

On June 23, Chaiya Huayhongthong, chief of Khao Yai National Park, confirmed that he had received a report from a volunteer elephant deterrence team (not official park rangers) about an incident in Khao Wong, Village 3, Nong Nam Daeng Subdistrict, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima. It was suspected that Plai Biang Lek may have been shot.

Photos and videos show two wounds on the elephant’s hindquarters, prompting the park authorities to call in veterinarians to determine whether they were gunshot wounds.

“If the elephant was indeed shot, we will press charges against the suspect,” Chaiya said. “It is then up to the police to investigate further. The incident happened outside the park boundaries, but we already have surveillance and deterrence teams working in these areas. Volunteers help monitor and report such cases as the park covers a huge area and animals often migrate unnoticed.”

Following the report, veterinary teams were dispatched to assess the elephant’s condition.

Monitoring for Next 3 Days

According to Chaiya, the veterinary team found the elephant but could not examine the wounds closely as Plai Biang Lek had covered the injuries with dirt to keep insects away. However, he was still wandering around near Khao Wong, close to where the report was first received.

Atthapol Charoenchansa, Director General of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, later said that no wounds were found today. It is suspected that the elephant covered them with mineralised soil.

“If wounds are present, pus discharge may be visible. However, if there are no such signs, this indicates that there were no injuries. I have ordered Plai Biang Lek to be monitored closely for the next three days,” said Atthapol.

Wildlife Is Protected

Pak Chong district chief Phairat Inpanja added that if it is confirmed that a weapon was used against the elephant, a court case must follow. He insisted that no one is above the law, not even local officials or politicians. Village chiefs and officials are well aware that wildlife is protected by law and cannot plead ignorance.

He explained that the communities surrounding Khao Yai National Park have long had agreements with the park to implement joint measures to monitor and deter wildlife. The district office has instructed village chiefs to raise public awareness and take special precautions in areas where wildlife is common.

When a report is received, park rangers are dispatched to assess the situation and guide the wildlife safely back into the park to minimise human-wildlife conflict and ensure the safety of people and wildlife. Local village level teams have also been mobilised to assist the park in safely managing these encounters.

Thailand Busts Major Drug Ring with 2.4-Ton Crystal Meth at Sea

Thai authorities seize 2,399 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, which were disguised as bags of corn flour, on the suspected vessel at Prasae River mouth in Klaeng District, Rayong Province, on June 21, 2025.

BANGKOK — Thai authorities have intercepted nearly 2.4 tons of crystal methamphetamine with an estimated international street value exceeding $91 million USD during a maritime smuggling operation in the Gulf of Thailand.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced the successful operation during a press conference at the Ministry of Justice on Monday, emphasizing the government’s serious commitment to combating drug trafficking.

The joint operation involved the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), Royal Thai Navy, and Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB). DSI Director-General Police Colonel Yutthana Praedam revealed that naval intelligence had tipped off the DSI about suspicious activities involving a 90-ton gross recreational vessel.

According to investigators, the smuggling network transported the drugs from the Prasae River mouth in Klaeng District, Rayong Province, sailing south through the Gulf of Thailand toward Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, where a larger vessel was waiting to transfer the narcotics for export to a third country.

The drugs were cleverly disguised as bags of corn flour. DSI teams tracked the operation and determined the exact timing of the transfer, which occurred on June 21 at approximately 11:00 p.m.

Four Royal Thai Navy surveillance vessels monitored the suspected boat in the Gulf of Thailand, approximately 5 nautical miles from shore near the Prasae River mouth. When the target vessel was spotted, authorities moved in and arrested eight Thai nationals aboard the boat, seizing 2,399 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine.

Simultaneously, another team inspected the suspected “Luk Yod” pier and discovered a six-wheeled truck with an enclosed cargo area used for drug transportation, along with a four-door pickup truck believed to be connected to the criminal operation. The vehicles have been transferred to DSI for further investigation.

Authorities have obtained leads suggesting foreign nationals are involved in the network, though investigations are ongoing.

The seized methamphetamine has an estimated domestic value of approximately 239 million baht ($7.25 million), while its international market value exceeds 3 billion baht ($91 million).

Prime Minister Paetongtarn noted that DSI has preliminary information about the drug owners but will hold another press conference once the investigation is complete. She praised the increasing success in intercepting large-scale drug shipments, attributing it to the patience and dedication of law enforcement agencies and effective inter-agency coordination.

“This criminal network was attempting to smuggle drugs through our country for sale in another nation, which would have increased the street price and caused harm to people worldwide,” the Prime Minister stated. “Our officers’ success in stopping this smuggling operation represents a tremendous service in protecting our nation. I must commend and thank all sectors involved once again.”

Surat Thani police arrested a Norwegian man at Surat Thani Bus Terminal on June 23, 2025, on suspicion of firing a crossbow at a fellow Norwegian tourist.

SURAT THANI — Police in Surat Thani have arrested a 56-year-old Norwegian man suspected of firing a crossbow at a fellow Norwegian woman while heavily intoxicated. The victim’s iPhone Mini took the hit, likely saving her life.

The incident occurred at 1:30 a.m. on June 19 in the living room of a residence in Koh Samui District, Surat Thani Province. Norwegian tourist Ms. Pia narrowly escaped being shot with a crossbow, with Mr. Simon serving as a witness while lying on a sofa watching a movie.

The suspect, identified as Mr. Elmer, had initially been drinking alcohol in his bedroom. After becoming heavily intoxicated, he emerged from his room shouting incoherently and displaying increasingly aggressive behavior. Fearing for her safety, Pia picked up her mobile phone to call police, dialing 191.

Simon, seated on the sofa, attempted to calm him down while Pia continued speaking with police officers on the phone. At that moment, Elmer raised the crossbow, aimed it at Pia’s head, and fired. The arrow struck her iPhone 12 Mini, which she was holding to her left ear, damaging the device. Elmer then fled the scene.

Investigators from Mueang Surat Thani Police Station gathered evidence and requested an arrest warrant from Koh Samui Provincial Court on charges of attempted murder. The court approved the warrant on June 23.

Arrest teams tracked down the suspect and found him aboard a van attempting to flee Surat Thani Province. He was apprehended at Surat Thani Bus Terminal and transferred to Samui Police Station investigators for prosecution.

Thailand Announces Measures To Crack Down on Cambodia-Based Cybercrime as Border Tensions Soar

Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra arrives at Government house in Bangkok, Thailand, Monday, June 23, 2025. (Thailand's Government Spokesman Office via AP)

By JINTAMAS SAKSORNCHAI

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand’s Prime Minister announced heightened measures to crack down on cybercrime that target neighboring Cambodia, including barring travel by casino tourists and cutting internet services to Cambodian military and security agencies.

Relations between the countries have deteriorated following an armed confrontation May 28 in which one Cambodian soldier was killed in a relatively small, contested territory.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said Monday that officials will tighten border restrictions with Cambodia by stopping cars and individuals attempting to enter or leave Thailand with exceptions for students, medical patients or others who need to purchase essential goods.

Thailand will block tourists who intend to visit Cambodia’s casinos and impose stricter screening measures on air passengers who wish to fly to Siem Reap, Cambodia, to gamble. She did not elaborate on how authorities will separate casino tourists from people visiting the country for other types of tourism.

Cambodia has blocked internet services, electricity and fuel supplies from Thailand in response to the border dispute, which could have economic implications for both nations.

The average monthly imports of gasoline and other fuel to Cambodia from Thailand is 85,426 metric tons (94,166 tons), which is 30% of all national imports. The average monthly liquid natural gas import from Thailand is 1,848 metric tons (2,037 tons), which is 4% of the national total, according to the Cambodian Ministry of Commerce.

An April U.N. report says transnational organized crime groups in East and Southeast Asia are spreading lucrative scam operations across the globe. Scam centers bilking victims out of billions of dollars through false romantic ploys, bogus investment pitches and illegal gambling schemes are now being reported in Asia, Africa and Latin America. The report mentions Cambodia as one of the world’s major cybercrime hubs.

Paetongtarn said Thailand will consider blocking exports of goods that could facilitate scam operations in Cambodia and will coordinate with other countries and international agencies for operations to crack down on cybercrime based in Southeast Asia.

Cambodian and Thai authorities have engaged in saber-rattling since the deadly clash in May. While the two countries said afterwards they have agreed to de-escalate the situation, they continue to implement or threaten measures short of armed force, keeping tensions high.

Paetongtarn has been attacked over her perceived soft stance toward Cambodia, especially by right-wing nationalists who are longtime foes of her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

phone call leaked last week between Paetongtarn and Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, the former prime minister who ruled over four decades, sparked outrage and calls for Paetongtarn’s resignation.

Critics said she tried to appease Hun Sen, a longtime friend of her father, and made Thailand look weak by calling a Thai army commander in charge of the disputed border area as “an opponent.” Several nationalist activist groups have planned a rally this week to demand Paetongtarn’s resignation.

Heroin packages disguised as sausages, hidden in a stretcher frame belonging to a Latvian tourist, are discovered by Thai authorities at Suvarnabhumi Airport on June 22, 2025.

SUVARNABHUMI — Thai authorities arrested a 71-year-old Latvian man attempting to smuggle approximately 3 kilograms of heroin through Suvarnabhumi Airport while in transit from Laos to Malaysia.

The Investigation and Suppression Division at Suvarnabhumi Airport under the Customs Department received intelligence reports about a suspected drug smuggler planning to use Thailand as a transit route. Officials coordinated with immigration authorities at Suvarnabhumi Airport to conduct a joint inspection.

The suspect, identified as Guntars, a 71-year-old Latvian national, arrived from Laos on flight TG571 at 3:20 PM on June 22, with plans to connect to Malaysia on flight TG417 departing at 4:40 PM.

During the baggage search, authorities discovered a red canvas bag containing what appeared to be a camping stretcher. Hidden within the metal tubes of the stretcher frame were 47 packages of a sausage-like substance wrapped in brown plastic. Laboratory testing confirmed the material was heroin weighing approximately 3 kilograms.

During initial questioning, the suspect provided no cooperation. Speaking only Russian with no English communication ability, investigators suspect he collected the drugs from Laos, noting that while he had no checked luggage on his outbound journey, he returned with a 9-kilogram checked bag.

The suspect has been transferred to the Investigation and Suppression Division of the Customs Department for prosecution.

Police Major General Choengron Rimpadee, Commander of Immigration Division 2, stated that operations involve coordination and support with related agencies to prevent and suppress criminal activities, particularly targeting foreigners who use Thailand as an origin, transit, or destination point for transnational crimes.

BEDO continues to work with UNDP as a strategic partner in the project’s execution.

She emphasized that BEDO’s core mission is to promote the sustainable use of biodiversity to strengthen local economies, especially those with direct access to natural ecosystems. Biodiversity-based tourism serves as a key service-sector strategy to generate income for communities. BEDO’s initiative aims to integrate tourism—a major sector in Thailand’s economy—into grassroots economic development by focusing on biodiversity as a key selling point. The pilot sites are in Kui Buri, Sam Roi Yot, and Pran Buri districts of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

image1 30

“This innovative approach to tourism development requires insight, experience, and guidance from all relevant stakeholders to address both opportunities and limitations. It must balance ecological conservation with economic sustainability for local communities. Today’s forum provides a platform for sharing ideas, perspectives, and best practices. BEDO will utilize the outcomes to work collaboratively with provincial authorities, local governments, community networks, and tourism businesses,” Ms. Suwanna concluded.

Thailand Tourism Faces Middle East and Cambodia Challenges

tourism
Tourists enjoy sunset views at Mae Hi viewpoint in Pai, Mae Hong Son, on Feb. 21, 2025.

BANGKOKThailand’s tourism industry is confronting new challenges as Chinese tourist arrivals decline due to negative news coverage about scam operations, while the latest crisis involves strained relations with Cambodia following multiple border checkpoint closures, compounded by escalating tensions between Israel and Iran with US intervention.

Middle East Conflict Impact

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong reported that the Israel-Iran conflict escalated to direct combat from June 13, 2025, raising concerns among Middle Eastern and Western nations about potential regional war that could impact global economic stability, including Thailand.

The Foreign Market Analysis Department has closely monitored the situation and projected significant impacts on Israeli tourist arrivals to Thailand, particularly severe effects expected from late June through the third quarter of 2025 due to direct combat in the region, with Q3 potentially declining by 29%. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has conducted a preliminary impact assessment divided into 2 scenarios:

Scenario 1: Recovery within Q3 2025

  • Overall annual growth rate: 24% increase
  • Expected Israeli tourists: approximately 350,000 visitors
  • Tourist loss: approximately 77,000 visitors from the projected 52% growth trend (427,000 visitors compared to 2024)

Scenario 2: Extended conflict without negotiated ceasefire

  • Severe impact expected for 6 months from mid-June to November 2025
  • Recovery to normal travel patterns in December (5-6 months recovery time, similar to Israel-Hamas conflict)
  • Overall annual growth rate: 19% increase
  • Expected visitors: approximately 335,000
  • Tourist loss: approximately 92,000 visitors from the original 52% growth projection (427,000 visitors compared to 2024)
samui white lotus1 scaled
International tourists enjoying Koh Samui beach on February 20, 2025.

Despite Q3 2025 contractions in both scenarios, overall annual growth rates are not expected to decline compared to 2024, due to accumulated 76% increase in Israeli tourists during the first five months of 2025. The conflict’s primary effect will be slowing growth momentum rather than causing actual decline.

Iran Market Analysis

Iranian tourist arrivals in the first five months of 2025 (January-May) totaled 28,259 visitors, down from 28,786 in the same period last year. Total Iranian tourists in 2024 numbered 64,962.

Mahan Air operates direct flights to Thailand serving Bangkok and Phuket routes with 6 weekly flights total. Direct flight services from Iran will end in June 2025, with airspace closures resulting in the loss of 1,800 passenger seats weekly.

Historical data from 2018, when the US imposed sanctions on Iran to curtail nuclear activities, showed Iranian tourist numbers to Thailand immediately dropped 60%. Based on this precedent, Iranian tourists in late 2025 may decline up to 60% due to war factors and absence of direct flights from July-December 2025.

Temple

Cambodia Border Tensions

Following adjusted operating hours at various checkpoints connecting to Cambodia since June 7, average daily tourist numbers decreased 43% compared to the previous week.
