Thaksin Declares Drug Dealers and Red Wa Army ‘Enemies of Thailand’

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra delivers a lecture at a meeting of the Committee for Monitoring and Accelerating Drug Prevention, Suppression, and Resolution Operations at the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (Din Daeng) in Bangkok on May 27, 2025.

BANGKOKFormer Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on Tuesday called for an uncompromising approach to Thailand’s drug crisis, declaring that anyone involved in narcotics should be considered “an enemy of Thailand” and treated without mercy.

Being invited by the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), Thaksin appeared publicly after facing a barrage of political issues, including the Medical Council’s decision to punish the doctor who diagnosed him for his transfer to the 14th floor of Police Hospital instead of serving his sentence in prison last year, leading to rumors that he had left the country.

A Controversial War on Drugs

The ONCB stated that they invited Thaksin to deliver a lecture and provide guidance to the team because of his track record in drug suppression during his time as Prime Minister. Back then, Thaksin declared a war on drugs in 2003, which was popular among many people. However, he faced opposition from human rights groups because that war resulted in extrajudicial killings and over 1,400 deaths.

Meanwhile, current opposition party members warned that he should not use a hardline approach again, or he might end up like former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

During this latest meeting on drug prevention and suppression on May 27, Thaksin recommended focusing suppression efforts on external production sources while using rehabilitation methods for drug addicts within the country. He urged the government to declare war on Myanmar’s Red Wa Army, which he identified as the primary source of drugs entering Thailand.

Almost 100% of Drugs from Red Wa

The former premier highlighted a significant shift in drug production patterns, noting that while major traffickers were previously based in Thailand with production split between domestic and foreign sources, nearly all narcotics now originate from the Red Wa region in Myanmar’s Shan State.

“Knowing the source means we cannot remain indifferent,” Thaksin stated, emphasizing that Thailand has become the largest drug market in the region due to its economic strength.

Calls for Regional Cooperation

Thaksin proposed leveraging his relationships with neighboring countries to secure cooperation in combating drug production at its source. He suggested that if Myanmar cannot control the Red Wa minority group, Thailand should seek permission to take direct action.

“In the next 1-2 months, the Minister of Foreign Affairs will need to meet with all neighboring countries to unite forces to make the Red Wa stop producing drugs,” he said.

Systemic Reform Needed

The former PM criticized Thailand’s current approach, noting that 29 agencies currently handle drug-related issues, potentially creating coordination problems. He pointed to gaps in container inspection capabilities, with customs handling 6 million containers annually but lacking sufficient X-ray equipment.

Thaksin advocated for cutting electricity and communications to drug operations using Thai infrastructure, stating that anyone refusing to cooperate would be considered “an adversary to their own country.”

Community-Level Action

Emphasizing the need for community involvement, Thaksin proposed creating “white areas” (drug-free zones) at the village level and called for closer cooperation between police and local administration officials.

He offered to personally visit provinces to identify drug problems and report findings to the Interior Minister, describing himself as willing to be “a bit of a whistleblower.”

Budget Reallocation Suggestion

Thaksin suggested that a portion of the 157 billion baht digital wallet budget could be redirected to decisively solve the drug problem by the end of 2025, believing the public would accept this prioritization.

Multi-Ministry Approach

The former PM called for coordinated efforts across multiple ministries, including Education for prevention programs, Public Health for rehabilitation services, and Defense for border security operations.

He emphasized that the anti-drug campaign must be sustained rather than a temporary effort, concluding: “Today, anyone involved with drugs is an enemy of Thailand.

Indian Man Confesses to Bang Rak Currency Shop Robberies

Police arrest an Indian suspect who robbed currency exchange shops in Bangkok at an apartment complex in Samre Subdistrict, Thonburi District, on May 27, 2025.

BANGKOKAn Indian national was arrested at an apartment complex in Samre Subdistrict, Thonburi District, one day after he committed armed robberies in Bang Rak District. Initially denying the charges, he eventually confessed when confronted with evidence found in his room.

The incident began on May 26 at 7:36 p.m. when Bang Rak Police Station received reports of a foreign man on a motorcycle attempting to rob the X-ONE Currency Exchange Centre on Surawong Road, Suriyawong Subdistrict, Bang Rak District, Bangkok. Though unsuccessful in that attempt, he proceeded to the WISE Exchange on Silom Road, where he successfully stole 93,000 baht ($2,840) in cash before fleeing toward the Sala Daeng intersection.

Metropolitan Police investigators examined the crime scenes and reviewed CCTV footage, identifying the suspect as a foreign national approximately 180 cm tall, with tanned skin, short black hair, and facial hair. He was armed with a handgun of unknown make and model and could communicate in both Thai and English.

Further investigation revealed the suspect had committed an earlier robbery attempt at a KBank branch inside Asiatique shopping center in Wat Phraya Krai Subdistrict, Bang Kho Laem District, at approximately 6:14 p.m. on May 26.

During that incident, he sat in front of the store and sent a mobile phone message in English that translated to “need a certain amount of cash.” When staff refused to hand over money, he drew his weapon threateningly but left empty-handed. Bank employees reported the incident to Wat Phraya Krai Police Station at around 8:50 p.m.

Investigators identified the suspect as Mr. Aman, 23, an Indian national, and obtained a court-issued arrest warrant on charges including nighttime robbery with firearms, using a vehicle to facilitate the crime, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and carrying firearms in public without permission.

Initially, Aman denied all charges, even when police discovered approximately 50,000 baht ($1,525) remaining in his residence, claiming it was his personal savings. However, when officers found clothing and a motorcycle matching those used by the perpetrator, he confessed to acting alone and admitted to using the stolen money for nighttime entertainment. He was subsequently transferred to Bang Rak Police Station investigators for prosecution.

ASEAN Opens Summit with Gulf Nations and China Amid US Tariffs Threat

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A regional association of Southeast Asian nations held a three-way summit Tuesday with China and six Persian Gulf countries in efforts to expand economic engagement and bolster resilience as they grapple with a volatile global trading system due to U.S. tariff hikes.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his opening remarks, said the inaugural summit in Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur would open up a new chapter of dialogue and cooperation.

The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the GCC and China collectively has a combined GDP of nearly $25 trillion and a market of over 2 billion people, offering vast opportunities to synergize their markets and promote cross-regional investment, he said.

“I am confident that ASEAN, the GCC, and China can draw upon our unique attributes and shape a future that is more connected, more resilient, and more prosperous,” he told the summit, attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

Li said the three-way cooperation would benefit all sides, contributing to economic development and peace in the region. China is ASEAN’s top trading partner, and has sought to present itself as a reliable ally to the region amid its rivalry with the U.S. The GCC supplies over a third of China’s crude oil imports.

“China will join ASEAN and the GCC in forging synergies that multiply rather than simply at our own strength,” he said.

Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, one of the world’s wealthiest men and longest-reigning current monarch, was missing from the three-party summit. He attended ASEAN summits on Monday and the ASEAN-GCC meeting earlier Tuesday.

Anwar later told reporters that the sultan, 78, was hospitalized due to fatigue. “He is feeling a little tired, so he’s just resting” at the National Heart Institute, Anwar said. Brunei officials couldn’t immediately be reached for details.

Malaysia is the current chair of ASEAN, which also includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Earlier Tuesday, Anwar told a separate ASEAN-GCC forum that partnership between the two blocs would be key to navigate an increasingly complex global economy and geopolitical challenges. He later said the two sides planned to launch talks to establish a free trade area.

(Mohd Rasfan/Pool Photo via AP)

Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al Sabah said the two blocs, which held their first summit in Riyadh in 2023, would build on their momentum to deepen cooperation and “improve our ability to face crisis.” He said the GCC is ASEAN’s seventh-largest trade partner, with total trade reaching $130.7 billion in 2023.

The GCC comprises the oil-producing nations of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Anwar said last week the GCC already has strong links with the U.S. and “wants to be close to China too.”

ASEAN has maintained a policy of neutrality, engaging both Beijing and the United States, but U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats of sweeping tariffs came as a blow. Six of the bloc’s members were among the worst hit, with tariffs between 32% and 49%.

Trump announced a 90-day pause on tariffs in April for most of the world, and this month struck a similar deal with key rival China, easing trade war tensions. ASEAN is seeking a summit with Trump on the tariffs, while moving to expand trade ties with China and others.

Anwar told a news conference at the end of the summit that ASEAN wasn’t pivoting towards China but it works with both Beijing and Washington because it makes economic sense.

“I don’t think (ASEAN) is tilting in anyway,” he said.

Collins Chong Yew Keat, a foreign affairs, strategy and security analyst with Universiti Malaya, said the ASEAN-GCC-China summit underscored Beijing’s efforts to strengthen support during its trade battle with the U.S. He noted it came on the heels of Trump’s recent charm offensive in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

While relying on U.S. defense support, ASEAN is increasing reliance and partnership with China and other U.S. rivals, Chong said. The bloc has failed to take strong action against Beijing’s aggression in the disputed South China Sea, he said. ASEAN members Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei have overlapping claims with China, which asserts sovereignty over almost the entire South China Sea.

“If this continues under the current Trump administration, it will create further room for Washington to distance itself from the region, which will spell disaster and create an even deeper Chinese presence,” he said. ___

Thai Police Target Chinese and Australian Crime Networks in Phuket

Phuket authorities investigate a tattoo parlor associated with an Australian suspect in the province.

PHUKET  — Phuket has become a focus of the Royal Thai Police as local authorities step up efforts to crack down on illegal businesses run by foreigners in the province.

Pol.Maj.Gen. Pornchai Khajornklin, Deputy Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 8, together with Police Maj-Gen Sinlert Sukhum, Commander of Phuket Provincial Police, and other relevant officers, held a press conference on May 26 announcing the results of coordinated raids and searches at locations linked to foreign mafia groups illegally operating businesses in Phuket and taking jobs from Thai nationals.

The extensive investigations led to operations at seven locations, resulting in four arrests and the seizure of 255 items. The main cases include:

Raid Against “Grey Chinese” Networks

Police raided a luxury car rental company (TOYOTA ALPHARD) linked to a Chinese national previously arrested in Phuket. As revealed in April, the suspect used Thai proxies to operate various businesses, including restaurants, international schools, car hire companies, hotels and luxury villas, worth over 1 billion baht.

Further investigation revealed that the suspect operated a high-end car rental business under the name “GRQ ALPHARD CLUB” and used unexplained funds to purchase vehicles and solicit foreign customers through social media. This disrupted local car hire businesses and displaced Thai operators. Police filed charges against seven members of the network and issued arrest warrants for all of them. Two have been arrested, four have fled the country and one is still at large.

Australian Case of Mafia and Gun Ownership

Investigations into a case involving illegal firearms and an Australian gang that stole cryptocurrencies from another Australian citizen led police to identify the gang’s leader, Mr Billy, as the owner of several businesses. Search warrants were issued for a cannabis growing facility, a bud boutique, a tattoo shop and a flat in Patong.

Authorities also raided a car rental company in Choeng Thale, Phuket, based on leads from a similar case in Bophut, Koh Samui, where an Israeli-owned car rental company had previously been busted. The investigation revealed that the foreign suspect had also opened a business in Phuket. At the EDRIVE RENTAL branch in Choeng Thale, a Russian national was arrested and the authorities confiscated 9 cars and 46 motorbikes for further investigation.

Over 200 cannabis-derived products and various pieces of equipment are seized.

Unauthorised Cannabis Processing Plant

Officers from Provincial Police Region 8, Phuket Provincial Police and Phuket Health Department raided a cannabis processing factory operating without a licence. Although the company claimed to be Thai-owned, investigators suspect that it is actually a foreign company using a Thai authorised agent.

Police Major General Pornchai explained that these raids were based on previous cases and are just the beginning. The authorities are preparing further operations targeting even larger foreign criminal networks that interfere with Thai livelihoods.

Driver Arrested After Car Plows into Celebrating Liverpool Fans

Police and emergency personnel deal with an incident on Water Street near the Liver Building in Liverpool after a car collided with pedestrians during the Premier League winners parade, in Liverpool, England, Monday May 26, 2025. (Danny Lawson/PA via AP)

LONDON (AP) — A 53-year-old white British man plowed a minivan into a crowd of Liverpool soccer fans who were celebrating the city’s Premier League championship Monday, injuring more than 45 people as shouts of joy turned into shrieks of terror.

The driver arrested was believed to be the only one involved in the incident and it was not being investigated as an act of terrorism, police said.

Ambulances took 27 people to the hospital, including two with serious injuries, and another 20 people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, said Dave Kitchin of North West Ambulance Service. At least four children were injured.

Four of the victims, including a child, were trapped under the van and firefighters had to lift the vehicle to free them. A paramedic on bicycle was also struck but was not injured.

“It has cast a very dark shadow over what had been a joyous day for the city,” City Council leader Liam Robinson said at a late night news conference.

As the parade was wrapping up, a gray minivan turned onto the parade route and plowed into the sea of fans wrapped in their red Liverpool scarves, jerseys and other memorabilia. A video on social media showed the van strike a man, tossing him in the air, before veering into a larger crowd, where it plowed a path through the group and pushed bodies along the street before coming to a stop.

A video on social media appeared to show a gray minivan strike at least one pedestrian and then veer into a larger crowd of people, carving a path through the group and pushing bodies along the street like a plow before coming to a stop.

Harry Rashid, who was at the parade with his wife and two young daughters, said the car began ramming people about 10 feet (3 meters) away from him.

“It was extremely fast,” Rashid said. “Initially, we just heard the pop, pop, pop of people just being knocked off the bonnet of a car.”

Rashid said after the car struck it’s initial victims, it came to a halt and the crowd charged the vehicle and began smashing windows.

“But then he put his foot down again and just plowed through the rest of them, he just kept going,” Rashid said. “It was horrible. And you could hear the bumps as he was going over the people.”

Rashid said it looked deliberate and he was in shock and disbelief.

“My daughter started screaming and there were people on the ground,” he said. “They were just innocent people, just fans going to enjoy the parade.”

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he was being updated on the situation and thanked police for their quick response.

“The scenes in Liverpool are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected,” Starmer said.

“Everyone, especially children, should be able to celebrate their heroes without this horror,” Starmer said. “The city has a long and proud history of coming together through difficult times. Liverpool stands together and the whole country stands with Liverpool.”

Liverpool Football Club’s legacy is overshadowed by a disaster 36 years ago when 97 of its fans were killed in a stadium crush during a match against Sheffield at Hillsborough Stadium. The tragedy was compounded by a coverup into the cause of the incident and missteps by police.

Supporters were denied the chance to publicly celebrate the club’s last league title in 2020 due to restrictions in place during the COVID pandemic.

This time, flag-waving fans braved wet weather to line the streets and climb up traffic lights for a view of Liverpool’s players, who were atop two buses bearing the words “Ours Again.”

AP25146634404897

The hours-long procession — surrounded by a heavy police presence — crawled along a 10-mile (16-kilometer) route and through a sea of red smoke and rain. Fireworks exploded from the Royal Liver Building in the heart of the city.

The team in a short statement said its thoughts and prayers were with those affected. The Premier League issued a similar statement expressing shock at the “appalling events in Liverpool.”

Police identified the suspect as white, in a possible decision to prevent misinformation from flooding social media.

Last summer, a teen in the nearby town of Southport killed three girls in a stabbing rampage at a dance class and wounded 10 others, including two adults. An incorrect name of the suspect was spread on social media and people said he was an asylum seeker. In fact, he had been born in the U.K. Rioting spread across England and Northern Ireland, targeting Muslims and refugees in hotels of asylum seekers and lasted about a week.

Thai Man Smuggled Cash Through “Doraemon Door” from Myanmar

The suspect points to the 'Doraemon Door' used for smuggling cash from Myanmar into Thailand on Kaset Phanit Soi 9, Sangkhlaburi district, Kanchanaburi province, May 26, 2025.

KANCHANABURI — Police in Sangkhlaburi district have arrested a 25-year-old Thai man for illegally transporting nearly 18 million baht ($552,000) in cash across the border from Myanmar into Thailand. The suspect confessed to repeatedly using what locals call a “Doraemon Door” – a house with its front entrance in Thailand and back door opening directly into Myanmar.

The arrest took place on May 26 with assistance from the Lad Ya Special Forces unit, which had intensified checkpoint operations in the area. Authorities stopped a vehicle driven by the suspect, identified as Thanawat, as he traveled from Ban Phra Chedi Sam Ong toward Sangkhlaburi town center.

During the search, officers discovered two cloth bags containing 17,994,000 baht in cash hidden inside the vehicle.

Unique Cross-Border Route

Thanawat told investigators he operates an import-export business between Thailand and Myanmar. He explained that after collecting payment from sales in Myanmar, he would store the money in a warehouse before smuggling it across the border to deposit in Thai banks for business investment purposes.

The suspect regularly used an unusual route through a house located on Kaset Phanit Soi 9, where the front entrance sits on the Thai side of the border while the back door opens directly onto a Myanmar road. Locals have dubbed this passage the “Doraemon Door,” referencing the popular Japanese cartoon character known for his magical gadgets.

Thanawat admitted to using this route multiple times, paying 500 baht per trip to workers who guard the property. His luck ran out during this latest attempt when authorities intercepted him.

Legal Consequences

Officials have charged Thanawat under the Customs Act for bringing money into the kingdom without going through proper customs procedures. The offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years imprisonment or a fine equivalent to four times the value of the goods plus import duties.

Authorities plan to question the homeowner to determine whether they were complicit in the smuggling operation.

Thailand Balances International Education Growth with Immigration Control

Thai government aims to address the problem of student visa abuse by foreign nationals by issuing a new regulation titled “Criteria and Guidelines for the Administration of Short-Term (Non-Degree) Study Programs for Foreign Students in Higher Education Institutions 2025."

BANGKOKAfter authorities discovered that some foreigners who have violated Thai laws have used student status as an excuse to stay in the country long-term and work illegally, the Thai government is moving to close this loophole by enforcing stricter controls over short-term education programs.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Karom Phonphonklang announced that the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) aims to address the problem of student visa abuse by foreign nationals by issuing a new regulation titled “Criteria and Guidelines for the Administration of Short-Term (Non-Degree) Study Programs for Foreign Students in Higher Education Institutions 2025,” which came into effect on May 14.

The regulation provides a legal framework for the issuance of residence permits for foreign students based on cooperation between MHESI and the Immigration Department.

Key points of the new regulation include:

1. Institutions offering short-term courses must demonstrate professional competence and preparedness in terms of curriculum content, qualified teaching staff and clearly defined learning outcomes.

2. Institutions must submit detailed course information to the Office of the Secretary of State of MHESI. This includes the course name, responsible department and faculty, objectives, structure and content, instructional format with at least 60% on-site and no more than 40% online, length of program with no more than 180 days, daily and weekly schedules, student qualifications, application period, number of foreign students admitted, language of instruction, learning location, and methods of assessment. Attendance records must also be submitted.

3. Institutions must issue formal certificates and apply for a temporary residence permit for foreign students for study purposes. Each stay must not exceed 180 days and must be consistent with the need and structure of the course. Academic records must be verified, especially for students who were previously enrolled in other programs at a Thai higher education institution.

4. Once the Immigration Bureau grants permission to stay, institutions must report the foreign student’s information to MHESI within 30 days.

5. Institutions are required to monitor attendance and submit monthly progress reports through the MHESI international student tracking system. These reports must clearly list all currently enrolled students, those who have withdrawn, and those who have completed the course.

6. If a facility is not in compliance, MHESI will notify the facility’s Board of Directors to consider terminating the program.

Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, explained that the government aims to raise the standards of short-term education in Thailand with transparency and legal clarity. The aim is to prevent the entry of foreigners under false pretenses and ensure that education programs are managed efficiently.

“This regulation requires higher education institutions to follow strict procedures and report regularly to the MHESI. This will help build confidence in the integrity and quality of Thailand’s education system and make it more attractive to international students,” she said.
