BANGKOK — In a significant anti-money laundering operation dubbed “Gateway Laundering,” Thai Cyber Police have uncovered a sophisticated scheme involving Malaysian nationals who married Thai women to establish shell companies for laundering online gambling proceeds.

The operation, conducted on December 17, involved raids at five locations across four provinces: Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, and Ayutthaya. A key target was Fox Ekkamai Company Limited, located in Grand Bangkok Boulevard, Ratchapruek-Rattanathibet.

Police arrested a Malaysian-Chinese national identified as Mr. Hao and his Thai wife, Ms. Patama, seizing assets worth approximately 13.3 million baht ($389,000). The confiscated items included 4 million baht in cash, gold jewelry, luxury watches including a Patek Philippe worth 2 million baht and a Rolex GMT Root Beer valued at 600,000 baht, 16 designer handbags, imported liquor, and a Toyota Alphard vehicle.

According to investigators, the couple had been living together for three years and operated several businesses, including a liquor store in Ekkamai and a shrimp fishing pond in Ramkhamhaeng, which served as fronts for their money laundering activities.

Police Lieutenant General Trairong Phiwphan, Acting Commander of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, highlighted a concerning trend where foreign nationals marry Thai citizens to gain legal business ownership rights.

In this case, the Thai wife held 51% of the company shares as a nominee shareholder while claiming ignorance of her husband’s illegal activities. She reportedly received a monthly salary in the hundreds of thousands of baht for managing the company.

The investigation revealed a network of more than 10 shell companies across Bangkok and surrounding areas, operating entertainment venues in Ekkamai and Ayutthaya, and seafood restaurants in Ladprao. Many of these registered companies showed no signs of actual business operations.

Police have issued 27 arrest warrants, with seven suspects currently in custody. Additional arrests include Ms. Saowalak, the wife of another Malaysian suspect named Jeffrey, who was apprehended at Aspire Asoke-Ratchada condominium.

The investigation continues as authorities work to track down remaining suspects and uncover potential links to other criminal operations, including call center scams and additional online gambling networks.

Pattaya Police arrested a group of Cambodian beggars consisting of 10 adults, including two disabled persons, and nine children aged from infancy to 10 years old, on December 16, 2024.

PATTAYA — A group of foreign beggars who had already been arrested several times by the Chonburi Immigration Department were arrested again. Meanwhile, Pattaya Tourist Police arrested an unlicensed Chinese tour guide and a Thai tour guide who allowed the Chinese national to use his identity as a cover.

Immigration Department investigators and Chonburi Provincial Immigration Department volunteers raided the hideout of a Cambodian beggar gang located in a row house in the Wat Tham Samakkhi community in South Pattaya, Chonburi Province.

On December 16, they arrested a total of 10 Cambodian adults, including both men and women – including 2 people with disabilities – and 9 children ranging in age from infants to about 10 years old. All in all, there were 19 people. Some of them were sitting outside the house chatting as usual, while others were sleeping in air-conditioned rooms.

Pattaya Police arrested a group of Cambodian beggars consisting of 10 adults, including two disabled persons, and nine children aged from infancy to 10 years old, on December 16, 2024.

After checking the suspects, the authorities found that 5 of them had entered the kingdom illegally, 3 were foreigners who were in the country without proper authorization or had overstayed their visas, and 2 people had valid passports and visas. The remaining 9 children were confirmed to be descendants of Cambodian nationals.

The officers found that some people had been arrested when their children were very young. Even though the children have now reached school age, these families continue to sneak into Pattaya with their children to beg.

The Chonburi Immigration Department then coordinated with the Chonburi Children and Family Home and the Chonburi Protection Center for the Destitute to take two mothers and their nine children into temporary protective custody at a children’s home before taking legal action and arranging for their deportation to their country of origin.

On the same day, Pattaya Tourist Police also arrested an illegal Chinese tour guide and a Thai tour guide who had allowed the Chinese man to use his name and pose as a licensed tour guide during an inspection of various tourist attractions such as Pattaya Beach, Walking Street, Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple) and The Sanctuary of Truth.

The police accused the Chinese man of acting as a tour guide without a license and engaging in employment while in the kingdom on a temporary visa. The Thai tour guide was charged under the Tourism Business and Tour Guide Act for allowing another person without a license to work in his place as a tour guide.

In addition, tourism police have ordered a crackdown on 10 banned groups conducting criminal activities during the peak season before Christmas and New Year, between December 16 and 22, 2024. The aim is to enforce strict measures and achieve clear, demonstrable results.

Tactical Police Go Full PUBG to Capture Sexual Assault Suspect

A Metropolitan Police officer donned military-style camouflage uniform reads the arrest warrant to the suspect at a house in Don Chimphli, Bang Nam Priao District, Chachoengsao Province on December 16, 2024.

BANGKOK — In a strategic operation reminiscent of tactical combat games, an Metropolitan Police officer donned military-style camouflage uniform to successfully apprehend a sexual assault suspect in a rural area. The specialized approach came after previous attempts at capture had failed.

The case began when Police Major General Theeradej Thammasutee received a report of a 12-year-old girl being sexually assaulted. The suspect, identified as Noppadol “Bang Din,” age 20, had allegedly abandoned the victim on a roadside after the assault.

According to the police report, the victim had befriended someone known as “Ree” on Facebook. On September 1, 2024, Ree invited her to hang out near her home in the Nong Chok area. Upon arrival, she met Ree and another man, Sharif, age 26.

The three traveled by motorcycle to a resort in Nakhon Nayok province. While there, the two men briefly left, returning with Bang Din. After Ree and Sharif stepped out again, Bang Din allegedly sexually assaulted the girl before abandoning her in the Nong Chok area.

The Min Buri Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Bang Din on December 11 on multiple charges, including human trafficking of a minor, deception, kidnapping, and sexual assault of a person under 15 years of age.

After several failed attempts to capture the suspect, including a motorcycle pursuit where he evaded police, investigators tracked him to Don Chimphli Sub-district, Bang Nam Priao District, Chachoengsao Province. The area’s rural terrain posed a significant challenge for conventional pursuit tactics.

In a final decisive operation, an officer employed military-style tactics, crawling through rice fields for over 300 meters in full camouflage gear. Using long-range optics, he located the suspect hiding beneath a house and successfully made the arrest. Bang Din has since confessed to all charges.

This isn’t the first time the Metropolitan Police have employed creative tactics for undercover operations. In a previous case, an officer successfully dressed as Japanese wrestler to infiltrate a swinging party, leading to the arrest of a Chinese national who had sexually assaulted and blackmailed a Thai female university student.
