Opinion: Is Thailand Joining BRICS a Disaster?

The Thai government controversially submitted an application to join BRICS earlier this month – is it a MISTAKE and a DISASTER?

Well, the timing was awkward, if not bad, considering that Russia, a key BRICS member, is still waging a full-scale war against Ukraine and an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin has been issued by the International Criminal Court.

It seems the Srettha government (or de facto Thaksin government) cannot and would not wait, however, as Thailand needs to revive its economy. One way of doing this is to engage with countries beyond the Western’s immediate sphere of influence. Joining BRICS will deepen Thailand’s economic and political ties with not just Russia, but other major countries like India, Brazil, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.

This writer does not need to spell out how important China is to Thailand, considering its contribution to the Thai tourism industry, trade, and people-to-people exchanges. But we need to look further. India is one country Thailand can definitely deepen its ties in a mutually beneficial manner. The size of its economy is projected to surpass that of Japan next year and it is the most populous nation on earth.

According to the CIA World Factbook 2024-2025, India’s median age is only 28.7 years (compared to Thailand’s 41), so it will most likely keep on growing and it means more potential Indian tourists to Thailand. Currently it is, on and off, among the top five foreign visitors to Thailand and there is no reason why it cannot grow five to 10-fold in the years ahead as it has 1.4 billion people.

Brazil can serve as a gateway for Thailand to engage closer with the Central and South American countries. Brazil alone has 218 million people. The same can be said about South Africa. We can do much more than selling rice to countries in the African continent, which is almost like terra incognita to most Thais and there is so much to learn, to exchange, to grow, and to bond. Here, BRICS will be another alternative platform for Thailand to engage with countries outside the U.S. orbit.

It is right that Thailand recognizes and is part of the creation and growth of a multipolar world. Pax Americana is in decline, if not nearly over, and the sooner Thai people recognize this and adjust to a new geopolitical reality the better.

Clearly, Thailand’s joining BRICS will come at a price, but America has never fully trusted Thailand and our relationship with the United States has been far from equal or mutually beneficial. In the past, the Cold War saw the U.S. propping up one Thai military dictator after another, resulting in the rogue Thai becoming a state within a state up to the present and ready to stage more military coups when opportunity arises.

This is chiefly ‘thanks’ to America’s unwavering support and use of Thai military regimes to repel communism threats, real or imagined, in Indochina. Today, it is clear the U.S. does not really trust us. That is why in May 2023, the Americans refused to sell two of its top-of-the-range F-35 fighter jets to Thailand, citing training, technical requirements, and inability to deliver new ones for at least 10 years.

Less than a year later, in February 2024, Singapore’s Straits Times reported its air force will acquire not just one or two, but eight F-35 jets, which will be delivered in 2030. So, I guess it did not really take 10 years to deliver these expensive toys that cost upward of 82 million dollars a pop.

Not that I think Thailand needs F-35 or more F-16 jets as the current U.S. Ambassador to Thailand Robert F Godec is trying hard to sell earlier this week when he met with Defense Minister Suthin Klangsaeng on Friday as reported by Matichon. Money would definitely be better spent on education, public health, welfare, and not on more expensive fighter jets as we are not as insecure as some of our ASEAN friends like Singapore, which is surrounded by immediate neighbors who too easily get irritated by the island republic for the right or wrong reason.

I say the Americans most likely fear the F-35 sold to Thailand could be reverse engineered by Chinese spies or agents within weeks after the jets landed in Thailand if it were to be sold to the Royal Thai Air Force. (Which might be the case, I must admit.)

It is not that China or Russia is innately more sincere than the U.S. We will have to continue to maintain cordial relations with the U.S., but Thailand needs to forge alternative channels and platforms at the international stage as Pax Americana is on the decline. It is also the right decision (despite the bad timing but I guess Thaksin would not wait) for a unipolar world is innately a more repressive and exploitative world system with just one nation telling others what to do compared to a multipolar world with more voices to be heard.

Also, Vietnam and Malaysia are also interested in joining BRICS – ten more other countries have also applied so we are not alone and would not be alone.

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) — Germany went from despair to delight in the space of a minute as a couple of big video review calls set the host nation on its way to a storm-affected 2-0 win over Denmark and a place in the European Championship quarterfinals on Saturday.

Denmark defender Joachim Andersen had a goal disallowed for the narrowest of offside decisions in the 50th minute, before giving away a penalty for handball on Germany’s very next attack.

Kai Havertz converted the spot kick and Jamal Musiala added a second goal in the 68th of a match that was suspended for about 25 minutes in the first half because of a bout of thunder and lightning that sparked torrential rain at Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion.

It was Germany’s first win in the knockout stage of a major tournament since 2016 and another sign of the team’s growing belief that will excite the nation after years of underperformance on the highest stage.

The Germans will play Spain or Georgia next and became the second team to advance from the round of 16, after Switzerland beat defending champion Italy 2-0 earlier Saturday.

“We’re going to Berlin,” sang Germany’s fans — in reference to the location of the Euro 2024 final on July 14 — in the giant South Stand late in the final minutes of what proved to be a dramatic occasion, as much because of the weather as what happened on the field.

After huge claps of thunder and lightning, the referee took the players off the field around the 35th minute and there was about a 20-minute delay, during which fans in the front rows got battered by torrential rain and sleet. The players re-emerged and undertook warmups before play resumed.

The Danes weathered their own storm early in the match and, against the run of play, thought they took the lead when Andersen hooked home a shot from close range. The Video Assistant Referee spotted an offside in the buildup, a free kick was awarded and the ball was played downfield, leading to a cross by David Raum hitting Andersen’s outstretched right arm. The VAR got involved again and a penalty awarded.

Havertz converted and it was all Germany thereafter, with Musiala racing clear to score his third goal of the tournament, tied for the most.

Italy’s title defense limps away at Euro 2024

BERLIN (AP) — In the end, 10 months weren’t enough for Italy coach Luciano Spalletti to have the Azzurri playing like his title-winning Napoli club.

Or even like any of the title-winning Italy teams of old. The honors feature four World Cups, two European Championships.

Italy’s European title defense limped to an end on Saturday in a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in the round of 16.

“The responsibility is mine,” Spalletti said, accepting blame for yet another failure by the proud soccer-mad nation to live up to its reputation.

Saturday’s last 16 exit was less of a fight from Italy and more a whimper that recast its 2021 Euro title win as somewhat of an anomaly.

That triumph came sandwiched between two failed attempts to qualify for the World Cup — for the 2018 edition after losing to Sweden in the playoffs, and four years later with a shock defeat to North Macedonia at the same stage.

The team earned redemption at Wembley three years ago, in the pandemic-delayed Euro 2020, and many Italians were hoping for a repeat in Germany.

But those hopes were dashed in the same stadium where Italy defeated France on penalties to lift the World Cup in 2006. It was Switzerland’s first win over Italy for 31 years, and the first game in seven at Berlin’s Olympiastadion that Italy failed to score.

“It’s on my head in terms of what’s happened, but this is part of a process and I have to say this. Because otherwise it might seem that I’m looking to justify things in a certain way,” Spalletti said. “But all of the other coaches had 20 matches in charge before they took charge. Some coaches had 30 games.

“I only had 10 and we already were under fire. You have to win … and it’s only right that we have to win. But I probably need to get to know my team a bit better to be able to set things up better.”

Spalletti was the coach who masterminded Napoli’s spectacular Serie A title run last year. That was Napoli’s first league championship in three decades — since the glory days of Diego Maradona — and the southern team won in thrilling style.

He left Napoli at the end of the campaign, saying he needed a break, but was appointed Italy coach last August after Roberto Mancini suddenly resigned.

Spalletti appeared to have brought that Napoli sparkle back to the national team as a newfound attacking flair helped Italy to turn around its qualifying campaign and finish second in its group.

But there was little sign at all of that at the tournament in Germany.

Italy conceded the fastest goal in the tournament’s history in its opening 2-1 victory over Albania, was thoroughly outclassed in a 1-0 loss to Spain, and needed a last-ditch equaliser from Mattia Zaccagni to snatch a 1-1 draw against Croatia and advance to the knockout stages.

“Having tried out a number of things over the course of this experience, I do come away with the notion that I have to change things, I’m convinced that I have to change things now,” Spalletti said. “It’s not a scandalous result as now you’re trying to depict it to be.

“And when I’m told that we produced a scandalous performance against Croatia … no, no, I’ll say no. Today we were under par, against Spain we were under par, but not against Croatia. We made it through a tough group. Deservedly so.”

Thai Farmers to Benefit from Australian Low Carbon Management Expertise

Lertlit Farm in Saraburi

SARABURI — For decades, Thailand, long recognized as an agricultural nation, has been a cornerstone of its national economy. Today, with global attention shifting towards environmental conservation and carbon credits, integrating modern technology into Thai agriculture is crucial.

This is especially true for raising standards in the livestock industry through “Low Carbon Management in Livestock Systems.” Australia, a leader in this field, is collaborating with Thailand on an innovative project.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra, in partnership with Chulalongkorn University and Saraburi Province, is spearheading the AIC Chula Saraburi Expo 2024. From June 24-28 in Saraburi, the event aims to promote modern technology and innovation. The expo will feature exhibitions and academic seminars designed to create marketing channels, increase income, and reduce agricultural production costs.

The goal is to add value to raw materials from Saraburi Province, disseminate agricultural knowledge, and enhance public relations for the Agricultural Technology and Innovation Center.

Organized by the Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra, the event brings together experts from Australia to share their knowledge with Thai farmers. Four companies are participating in the seminar and farm visits

Eleanor Mak, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Venturenauts and Guru Advantage specializes Consulting in the livestock industry. David Davies, Founder and CEO of AgUnity, is an expert in integrating livestock supply chains to connect markets digitally. Reg Smyth, Founder and CEO of CirPro, which develops every part of the cattle product range into high-value products and new markets and Andrew Mason, CEO of AgCoTech, a company focused on improving livestock quality and reducing methane emissions.

Thai Ambassador to Australia, Ms. Arjaree Sriratanaban, highlighted the significance of this cooperation: “The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is honored to facilitate this knowledge exchange to elevate Thai agriculture.”

“The Thai-Australian relationship is robust, particularly in agriculture, where Australia excels in livestock management and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. We hope that the expertise shared by Australian companies will enhance production efficiency and benefit Thai farmers in the future,” Ms. Arjaree added.

In the discussion on “Low Carbon Management Using Agricultural Technology from Australia,” Eleanor Mak stated that this phase marks the second stage of Thai-Australian cooperation in bringing knowledge to students, farmers, and livestock experts in Thailand.

Australia excels in agriculture and livestock management, and we aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from these industries while creating a systematic cycle of carbon management in a Bio-circular economy.

“The role of Venturenauts is not just to facilitate this collaboration or bring Australian experts to Thailand and other ASEAN regions. We are also committed to building a knowledge network for mutual learning and advancing the industry together,” Mak explained.

“Each country faces unique challenges in livestock production. In Australia, we deal with extreme weather conditions and labor shortages in agriculture. However, these issues can be addressed through knowledge and technology. We can learn from each other and apply these solutions in Thailand as well,” she added.

Methane and cattle

Methane, a primary greenhouse gas emitted in grazing systems, poses a significant challenge in the livestock industry, particularly with ruminant livestock such as cattle, sheep, and goats. Effectively reducing methane emissions while increasing production remains a crucial goal in this sector.

In managing emissions while enhancing productivity. Andrew Mason, from AgCoTech, emphasized their focus on developing high-quality cattle breeds and innovative beef cattle production technologies aimed at reducing methane emissions. A standout innovation is their ‘Medicated Block,’ an animal feed block made from molasses that cattle lick. This technology not only boosts cattle productivity and welfare but also slashes methane emissions by up to 40%.

cattle aussie8
Lertlit Farm in Saraburi

“Our Medicated Block exemplifies our commitment,” Mason explained. “It enhances cattle productivity and welfare while significantly curbing methane emissions. We’ve seen success with this technology in Laos and Indonesia, where it has increased milk up to 30% production and cattle weight to 7%, leading to a 17% reduction in emissions.”

Furthermore, purchases of AgCoTech’s SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) carbon offsets contribute to offsetting carbon emissions, aligning with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments. He highlighted, “The income generated from SDG/carbon offsets allows us to provide Medicated Blocks for free to smallholder farmer families in developing nations.”

Looking ahead, AgCoTech aims to collaborate with Thai agencies, particularly universities and the Department of Livestock Development, to register and certify projects. They seek local farmers and businesses to adopt Medicated Blocks, ensuring effective performance monitoring and sustainable livestock management in Thailand.

Agri Superapp

Efficient livestock farming that boosts production without harming the environment is crucial. Managing farms and optimizing supply chains are equally vital. Thailand, a leader in ASEAN’s IT and internet infrastructure, is poised to benefit from agricultural digitalization

AgUnity, led by David Davies. Specializing in enhancing farm operations and supply chains, AgUnity leverages a smartphone-based digital platform ideal for rural settings, particularly in Thai villages.

“Our technology is tailored for millions of low-income farmers globally, promoting fair trade,” Davies affirmed. Having successfully operated in less developed nations, including Thailand, AgUnity sees promise in leveraging its solutions across remote communities.

“With over 570 million farms worldwide, existing technologies mostly cater to larger operations,” Davies noted. “Our platform addresses the unique needs of smallholder farmers and cooperatives.”

The platform, integrated within super apps, streamlines farm management, facilitating direct purchases of supplies like animal feed from manufacturers, bypassing intermediaries, and fostering market accessibility.

“Smallholder cooperatives are vital in developing economies,” Davies emphasized, highlighting AgUnity’s focus on eliminating middlemen barriers. Reflecting on their global impact, he cited successes in coffee bean trading in Indonesia and Ethiopia, illustrating platform’s versatility beyond livestock.

While Thailand boasts robust digital infrastructure, challenges remain, particularly in regulating influential traders. AgUnity aims to collaborate closely with cooperatives, enhancing agricultural efficiency across diverse sectors like coffee and chocolate production.

Beyond the Cattle

Reg Smyth, Founder and CEO of CirPro, describes his company as dedicated to circular profession—transforming beef into diverse products like dietary supplements, vitamins, medical surgery, and nourishing creams. These innovations aim to maximize the value of beef and dairy cattle. which traditionally have slower growth rates and fluctuating production costs linked to feed prices and emissions.

cattle aussie2
Reg Smyth, Founder and CEO of CirPro

“The market for meat consumption grows slowly at 3%, posing a significant challenge to increasing product value,” Smyth noted.

CirPro operates across three main areas: livestock production, farm management for carbon reduction, and expanding product lines including bones, skins, and offals. Notably, CirPro has successfully brought medical-grade protein from Southern Australia’s livestock to market, significantly enhancing value by up to 80%.

Traditionally, a single cow utilizes 55% for human-grade output, 35% for non-human-grade, and wastes 10%. With CirPro’s innovations, utilization increases to 88% for human-grade output, 7% for non-human-grade, and 5% for medical-grade output.

An environmental breakthrough includes using Asparagopsis to create Methane Tamer, a vitamin supplement for cows that reduces methane emissions. Testing with 70 cows over 100 days in South Australia showed a reduction of approximately 105 metric tons of CO2 emissions—equivalent to the carbon absorbed by over 1,700 trees in a decade.

Looking ahead, CirPro plans to expand its Circular Utilization model beyond cattle to include sheep and other livestock. Smyth emphasized their goal as a fully integrated livestock utilization company, aiming to maximize agricultural value by utilizing animal waste, such as converting manure into fertilizer.

CirPro seeks partnerships with educational institutions, factories, and cooperatives to implement these processes in Thailand, tailored to the unique livestock cycle of the country.

New Thai Senators: A New Power Base, Not Red or Orange, But Blue

senator
The senatorial election on June 26, which was complex and time-consuming, lasted overnight until the morning of June 27, 2024.

BANGKOK — Looking at the list of 200 winners from the new Thailand’s indirect senatorial elections this week, we see mostly little-known former appointed governors, army generals, and ex-senior government officials.

On the international stage, apart from former National Human Rights Commissioner Angkhana Neelapaijit, hardly anyone is recognizable.

The selection of 200 national-level senators, which began at 20:00 on June 26 at Impact Forum, Building 4, Muang Thong Thani, concluded with the vote count for the final group by the Election Commission finishing at 04:52 on June 27.

angkana
Former National Human Rights Commissioner Angkhana Neelapaijit

Many candidates were exhausted and went home during the complex and time-consuming multi-stage selection process, in which many well-known figures were surprisingly eliminated. This includes Somchai Wongsawat, former Prime Minister and brother-in-law of former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, who was expected to potentially become the Senate President.

The Blue-line senators

Many observers have clearly noted that more than half of the elected senators are linked to the Bhumjaithai Party. Many come from Buriram province, and several have close ties to the ‘Chidchob’ family, founders of the Bhumjaithai Party, a coalition government party that uses blue as its party color.

Hence, there’s a saying that this batch of senators is the ‘blue-line senators’.

Bhumjai Thai Party leader Anutin Charnveerakul on Friday denied his party has manipulated the indirect sectoral senatorial elections, despite pundits classifying at least around half of the new 200 senators-elect as being linked to the party. Anutin said he knows no more than 20-30 of them.

senators3
The senatorial election on June 26, which was complex and time-consuming, lasted overnight until the morning of June 27.

When asked about Lt. Gen. Kriangkrai Srirak, former 4th Army Area Commander, who is expected to become the Senate President and was an advisor to the Interior Minister (a position Anutin holds), he said that Lt. Gen. Kriangkrai resigned to apply for the Senate position himself, adding that ‘a friend is a friend, but he can’t interfere with anything.’

Result of distrusting the people

Move Forward Party leader Chaithawat Tulathon gave the newly elected senate a thumbs down on Thursday and said the majority were connected to politicians. He added that this leads to the question of whether having a senate in the future is necessary.

Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra told reporters the much-criticized convoluted indirect sectoral elections of the new senate demonstrates how the military junta distrusts the people.

Asked if his influence is waning as former premier Somchai Wongsawat failed to get elected as a senator, Thaksin said he’s just a 75-year-old man with no special powers.

thaksin senator
Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra

‘This election teaches us that every coup stems from distrust in the people. When people elect a government and it’s not trusted, a coup occurs. After a coup, rules are created where the central authority tries to control what people do according to their wishes,’ Thaksin said.

He added that the rules for this senatorial election were similarly set after the coup, and the rule-makers thought their rules were the best and smartest, but the end result is distrust in the people.

‘It’s not a good thing. We must return to trusting the people. The foundation of democratic governance must trust the people. Don’t look down on the people, they can think for themselves, and the decisions of the majority will be the most correct.’

Bhumjaithai Party Branch 2

Surachart Bamrungsuk, a political science academic from Chulalongkorn University, offered a similar view, saying that the design of the senatorial election rules is a direct result of the coup makers’ design, which seems to be a senatorial election that will likely face the most ‘allegations’ and negative criticism in another way.

These rules were designed to create inherent ‘confusion,’ with the Election Commission, who holds these rules, having to make decisions, and confusion about individuals’ professions, as seen in the news. For example, whether a village-level public address announcer would be considered a mass media professional, or what qualifies a person to run in the science and technology professional category.

senators2
The senatorial election on June 26, which was complex and time-consuming, lasted overnight until the morning of June 27.

He pointed out that in the election results, senators from the ‘political line’ such as from the ‘Pheu Thai Party’ and ‘Move Forward Party’ didn’t win, but the ‘Bhumjaithai Party’ won unexpectedly. In other words, parties opposing the coup makers didn’t win, but a ‘new power base’ in the Senate, or ‘Bhumjaithai Party Branch 2,’ is being born in the Senate.

‘Thai politics from now on is therefore very interesting and has a significant impact on the Srettha government and the Pheu Thai Party,’ Prof. Surachart pointed out.

Election Commission secretary-general Sawaeng Boonmee said on Thursday the formal announcement of the 200 newly elected senators will be made on July 3.

There have been over six hundred complaints related to election irregularities so far. Sawaeng advised that complaints should be made within three days of the election.

Thai Media Abuzz with Details of Lisa’s Bangkok-Shot ‘ROCKSTAR’ Video

Yaowarat, Bangkok's Chinatown, appears in Lisa's MV 'ROCKSTAR'.

BANGKOK — Netizens and Thai Media are thrilled by Lisa’s release of the ‘ROCKSTAR’ music video. They are highlighting every detail about this MV.

Since the official MV of Thai superstar and K-pop sensation Lisa’s song ‘ROCKSTAR’, 2:48 minutes long, was released on Friday morning, June 28, 2024, Thai netizens and media have shown their excitement.

The video, which quickly surpassed one million views 27 minutes after its release, features Yaowarat, Bangkok’s Chinatown, as a backdrop, along with scenes from the New World department store in Banglamphu.

Lisa’s fan clubs praised the MV for its many Thai team members, including the art director, production coordinator, production assistants, travel coordinator, set manager, camera assistants, cameramen, lighting technicians, electricians, prop masters and suppliers, assistants, dancers, seamstresses, and even nail technicians.

Behind-the-scenes

The media also shed light on various behind-the-scenes aspects of the shoot, including interviews with a group of Harley riders who were invited to take part in the scenes. The leader of the group revealed that the MV was filmed on May 23 from 4 p.m. until the morning, without revealing whose MV it was.

A member named Tum, Thanawat Wongsuk, 31, said he drove through the rain from Chonburi, causing the engine of his motorcycle to break down and costing him over 40,000 baht to repair. Out of respect for his leader’s instructions and the group’s project, he reluctantly came along.

“When I arrived on set, my phone was confiscated, which made me very angry. But after I had rehearsed the scene 4-5 times, a woman came down with her bodyguards. When she turned around and I saw it was Lisa… Oh dear, all my anger and frustration disappeared,” he said. “I stood there stunned, watching Lisa dance in front of me, and Yaowarat lit up.”

Yaowarat, Bangkok’s Chinatown, appears in Lisa’s MV ‘ROCKSTAR’.

As for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), they are preparing to take care of and facilitate various aspects throughout Bangkok, especially on Yaowarat Road, which has problems with traffic congestion, pedestrian crossings without push-button traffic signals, tricycles and public taxis parking to wait for passengers and obstructing traffic, insufficient garbage disposal points, odor from sewers, and insufficient toilets.

Therefore, the BMA is coordinating with the police to improve traffic management. The Samphanthawong District will arrange sufficient and appropriate garbage disposal points, as well as coordinate with property owners and private entities in the area to provide public toilet services with directional signs. They will also create maps showing toilet locations to make it easier for tourists to find them.

Cyclist’s Encounter with Foreigner’s Dogs Leads to Trat Beach Dispute

Mr. Mario, a 52-year-old Belgian man, performed a wai (Thai greeting gesture) to Mr. Thakorn at the beach and apologized on June 28, 2024.

TRAT  — In the eastern Thai seaside province of Trat, a new dispute has arisen over a public beach area involving a conflict between a Thai and a foreigner. However this case ended well, with the foreigner agreeing to apologize to the Thai man.

on June 28, officers at Mai Rood police station in Trat Province investigated the incident and summoned both the Thai man and the Belgian man involved to the station for mediation after the story broke in the media.

The incident began when Mr. Thakorn, a 60-year-old Thai man, reported through the media that he had a confrontation with Mr. Mario, a 52-year-old Belgian man, on Wednesday morning as he was riding his bicycle past the foreigner’s resort. A pack of 5-6 dogs charged at him and tried to bite him, causing him to fall off his bike.

As he stood up, a foreigner came out of the resort and shouted at him in English to leave the beach area. The foreigner pushed him three times, causing him to fall and injure his left leg. He also threatened: “Do not disturb the beach area. Don’t disturb me. I have a gun.”

Afraid of the dogs and the foreigner, Thakorn went home to Khlong Takian, intending to get his bike later. When he returned with a friend, he found that the foreigner had thrown his bike into the sea, not far from the scene. He then reported the matter to the Mai Rood police station.

The police summoned Mario for questioning on June 26. He admitted to releasing the dogs, threatening Thakorn and pushing him three times. The police recorded the incident and fined Mario 1,000 baht before releasing him.

Thakorn expressed his concern and hoped that this incident would not happen to others, especially locals passing by or cycling on the public beach. He advised people to be wary of the resort’s dogs, which roam the beach and attack people.

He also criticized the police for using Mario’s Thai wife as an interpreter without checking Mario’s background and only checking his passport, not his visa or CCTV footage from the scene.

A Channel 3 reporter later interviewed Mario, who claimed that the incident did not happen as Thakorn had described it. He denied having a gun and said he had only asked Thakorn to turn his bike around. However, he expressed a desire to apologize to Thakorn.

The reporter also interviewed a 78-year-old woman named Bat, a local resident who stated that she had been bitten on the thigh by Mario’s dog while she was walking along the beach near the resort collecting garbage to sell. She said that at the time, Mario’s Thai wife gave her 200 baht for wound treatment medication. Now, villagers are afraid to walk past this foreigner’s resort for fear of being bitten by dogs like she was.

After the media reported this news, the police at Mai Rood Police Station invited both parties involved to come to an agreement. It took nearly 1 hour to reach a resolution. Mario agreed to apologize to Mr. Thakorn, admitting that he had pushed Mr. Thakorn, causing injury.

The Belgian man then performed a wai (Thai greeting gesture) to Mr. Thakorn at the beach and apologized. The two then shook hands to resolve the conflict. The police officers will record at Mai Rood Police Station that Mario has promised not to cause such incidents again.

Mr. Thakorn said he hopes this case will be the last of its kind where foreigners mistreat Thai people, as has happened several times before. He added that he welcomes all foreigners who come to travel in Thailand and Trat province.

Previously, a similar dispute occurred in Phuket Province when a Swiss man named David kicked a Thai female doctor while she was sitting on the steps near the beach in front of his villa. This led to a major legal case where the police had to investigate the encroachment of public beach areas. It also sparked a social media backlash against foreigners who come and assert their dominance over local people.
