ASIA PACIFIC GEN-ZS AND MILLENIALS SEEK TO UNLOCK VALUE AND MAXIMIZE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE WITH ONE LOYALTY PROGRAM

Regional survey by Marriott Bonvoy uncovers key traits of travel-oriented, value-driven Gen-Zs and Millennials

24 April 2024 – A survey by Marriott Bonvoy, the award-winning travel program of Marriott International, has found that a majority of Gen Zs and Millennials in Asia Pacific excluding China (APEC) prefer the simplicity of belonging to one comprehensive loyalty travel program.

While 60% of APEC Gen Zs and Millennials are actively subscribed to loyalty programs, the challenge of juggling several loyalty programs has led most (57%) to seek out one program that meets all their travel needs. Marriott Bonvoy carried out the survey of 1,000 respondents across ten markets in APEC to better understand the shifting attitudes of Millennials and Gen Zs and their travel behaviors. The survey identified an emerging generation of travel-focused, value-driven “Savvy Explorers” in APEC who seek to maximize their travel dollars and unique travel experiences.

Travel in 2024 is a priority for Gen Zs and Millennials: 73% report their intentions to take at least two trips in the next 12 months and 91% plan to spend the same, if not more, on their trips compared to the year before. Travel is viewed as an essential lifestyle component, and most are willing to reduce everyday spending on dining out (60%), shopping sprees (57%) and their daily coffee (54%) so as to spend more on a holiday.

“Survey results suggest that Gen Zs and Millennials in APEC are purposefully strategizing how they can channel value from their everyday spend toward rewarding travel experiences. They also prefer to be part of only one all-encompassing loyalty travel program which fulfills their needs. To this end, Marriott Bonvoy – which gives members access to over 30 brands in 10,000 destinations — is well positioned to deliver greater value and unlock more experiences for Gen Zs and Millennials,” says John Toomey, Marriott International’s Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Asia Pacific excluding China.

“As testament to the program’s appeal, we have seen Marriott Bonvoy’s membership base in APEC grow by more than 50% since 2019. What’s more encouraging is that our members are highly active. They earned 40% more points in 2023 compared to 2022, and are putting their points to good use, with points redemptions increasing by more than 55% in the same period,” he reveals.

The trend of greater member growth and activity extends to the Marriott Bonvoy app. APEC member enrolment via digital channels grew by more than 25%, with mobile app downloads and active users more than doubling in 2023 compared to pre-pandemic levels.

The regional survey also uncovered notable trends amongst Gen Zs and Millennials across the 10 APEC countries. Market-specific trends can be found in Annex A.

Travel value unlocked through everyday spend

Savvy Explorers take considered steps to unlock travel value through everyday spend. Leveraging on their familiarity with loyalty programs, APEC’s Gen Z and Millennials employ varied tactics to maximize their travel rewards: four in five say they have gone out of their way to use a travel-linked credit card for everyday purchases, and 67% actively use a travel loyalty program to book and redeem local experiences and staycations.

This trend is supported by usage behaviors of Marriott Bonvoy members in APEC. They accumulated points from stays across more than 8,800 Marriott International properties globally, and through everyday spend. Redemption for hotel stays in 2023 registered a 130% increase compared to pre-pandemic times, accounting for the majority of redemptions, followed by points-to-miles conversions on partner airlines.

Hotels become a key destination to explore

Hotel experience is key to winning the hearts and dollars of the Gen Z and Millennial segment, with 99% of respondents believing their hotel choice can make or break their holiday. Hotels are also increasingly viewed as a key destination for exploration, going beyond the role of ‘accommodation’. Nearly four in five respondents expect their hotel to provide curated local programming and experiences, whilst 84% prefer to stay at a hotel with designs and activities reflective of its destination.

The recent debut of Moxy Hotels – noted for its hallmark playful nature, innovative design and contemporary amenities – in key APEC markets exemplifies Marriott International’s commitment to continuously bring new hospitality experiences to the region.

Despite a desire to maximize their travel budgets where they can, their hotel is one area that APEC’s Gen Z and Millennials are willing to invest extra travel dollars towards. Top motivations for new-generation travelers to splurge include the hotel’s room offerings (48%) and location (42%). Whilst amenities remain key considerations, these guests value a seamless travel experience, with mobile-first customer service (61%), reliable WiFi (68%) and flexible check-out (64%) outpacing traditional benefits like lounge access (42%).

Destination ‘dupes’ fuel intra-regional travel demand

International travel has returned but APEC’s Gen Z and Millennials remain committed to destinations closer to home. While iconic holiday locations like the Swiss Alps and Bora Bora maintain their appeal, 55% are opting for destinations within the region that provide a similar experience. These so-called “destination dupes” are fast gaining traction amongst this segment because they allow Gen Zs and Millennials to stretch their travel expenses (69%), discover something new (63%) and are easily accessible (62%).

As a reflection of robust intra-regional travel demand in 2023, Marriott International saw over 60% of bookings in APEC coming from within the region.

Corporate backpackers on the rise

Gen Zs and Millennials are also taking bleisure travel up a notch by capitalizing on the opportunity of a business trip to embark on multi-destination tours. In addition to extending their travel plans (68%), 84% plan to explore nearby cities and countries as part of their post-work itinerary.

With more than 560 properties across 24 brands in 22 countries and territories in APEC to choose from, Marriott International offers customers a myriad of options to mix work with pleasure.

Off-peak travel maximizes destination experience

Gen Zs and Millennials are also carefully planning when to travel to maximize their trip experience. The majority (71%) of Gen Z and Millennials say they would opt to travel during off-peak seasons so as to beat the crowds and get more out of their trip. 67% feel they can do more during low-peak seasons, and 77% leave their holidays feeling more relaxed and rejuvenated.

From Witness to Suspect: Thai Man Helps Yakuza Hide Body Parts

NONTHABURI – Police officers have arrested the first suspect in the grisly case in which human body parts were found stuffed in black bags in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok. Forensic results identified the deceased as a member of the Japanese Yakuza gang.

Mr. Kritsakorn Jaipitak, or Game, 31, who was originally a witness in the murder case, has become a suspect involved in hiding the body parts, including hands and bones, dumped in the area of Soi Jadsan Teedin 2, Bang Bua Thong district, Nonthaburi province.

The first piece of the body, the right hand bone with a tattoo on the wrist, was found by a boy on April 19. The boy told his mother, who is a housekeeper at a furniture factory in the alley. She quickly alerted the police, resulting in the discovery of further body parts in the neighbourhood. On April 23, the police found the skull in Soi Puyai Liam, Moo 4, Pimlaraht sub-district.

Meanwhile, officers from Region 1 police and Bang Bua Thong police jointly arrested Mr. Game and confiscated the vehicle he was driving. He was then interrogated at Bang Bua Thong Police Station later that evening.

In his preliminary statement, he claimed to have been hired by a group of three Japanese men to pick them up and take them to a factory on the outskirts of Bangkok on March 28. The deceased was sitting in the front passenger seat next to him, while the other two perpetrators, also Japanese nationals, were sitting in the back seat.

During the journey, the three Japanese men got into a heated argument in the car, which escalated into violence. When they reached the factory, the Japanese man sitting in the back of the car signaled him to stop and got out first.

Report from the latest World Tourism Cities Federation summit is upbeat about global tourism growth this year, forecasting revenue to reach 139.6 percent of the pre-pandemic level in 2019.

WELLINGTON – Global tourism revenue is estimated to total 5.8 trillion U.S. dollars in 2024, or 139.6 percent of the pre-pandemic level in 2019, according to a report released by an international tourism summit held here.

The Report on World Tourism Economy Trends (2024) predicted that international tourist arrivals would amount to 13.579 billion in number this year, recovering to 103.9 percent of 2019.

At the same time, the report called for efforts by the global tourism industry to turn challenges from technology advancements and climate change into growth opportunities, proactively incorporating them into reshaping the industry.

KMUTNB, BYD, and FXB Establish MoU Partnership for Electric Vehicle and Automation Systems

On 23 April 2024, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Suchart Siengchin, President of KMUTNB, represented the university in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BYD CO., LTD., and FXB CO., LTD.

The signing ceremony, held at BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen, China, was attended by Mr. Xun Meng, Deputy General Manager of BYD Human Resources Division, and Mr. Wang Yubiao, CEO of FXB Co., Ltd., alongside KMUTNB’s executive team, including Prof. Dr. Teravuti Boonyasopon, Chairman of KMUTNB Council Committee, Dr. Somyos Keratichewanun, Member of KMUTNB Council Committee, Asst. Prof. Preecha Ong-aree, Director of KMUTNB Techno Park, Prof. Dr. Saowanit Sukparungsee, Vice President for Academic Affairs, together with distinguished representatives from both companies.

The MoU formalizes collaboration on human resource development and research within the electric vehicle and renewable energy industries. This partnership aims to advance technology and facilitate the exchange of experiences, knowledge, and technology among the three parties.

It also establishes the Center of Excellence in Electric Vehicle and Automation Systems, which will provide training programs for students and staff from public and private universities and technical colleges across Thailand.

Additionally, the partnership will provide consultancy and training for engineers and technicians at BYD CO., LTD.’s maintenance service centers in Thailand, enhancing their competence and enabling them to deliver quality service to customers.

The collaboration also focuses on Cooperative and Work Integrated Education (CWIE), offering students internships at the Center of Excellence in Electric Vehicle and Automation Systems, KMUTNB, as well as at FXB CO., LTD. and BYD CO., LTD. factories. These internships will equip students with practical skills and experience for their future careers.

Tesla 1Q Profit Falls 55%, but Stock Jumps as Company Moves To Speed Production of Cheaper Vehicles

Tesla’s first-quarter net income plummeted 55%, but its stock price surged in after-hours trading Tuesday as the company said it would accelerate production of new, more affordable vehicles.

The Austin, Texas, company said it made $1.13 billion from January through March compared with $2.51 billion in the same period a year ago.

Investors and analysts were looking for some sign that Tesla will take steps to stem its stock’s slide this year and grow sales. The company did that in a letter to investors Tuesday, saying that production of smaller, more affordable models will start ahead of previous guidance.

The smaller models, which apparently include the Model 2 small car that is expected to cost around $25,000, will use new generation vehicle underpinnings and some features of current models. The company said it would be built on the same manufacturing lines as its current products.

On a conference call with analysts, CEO Elon Musk said he expects production to start in the second half of next year “if not late this year.”

New factories or massive new production lines won’t be needed for the new vehicles, Musk said.

“This update may result in achieving less cost reduction than previously expected but enables us to prudently grow our vehicle volumes in a more capex efficient manner during uncertain times,” the investor letter said.

But Musk gave few specifics on just what the new vehicles will be and whether they would be variants of current models. “I think we’ve said all we will on that front,” he told an analyst.

He did say that he expects Tesla to sell more vehicles this year than last year’s 1.8 million.

The company also appears to be counting on a vehicle built to be a fully autonomous robotaxi as the catalyst for future earnings growth. Musk has said the robotaxi will be unveiled on Aug. 8.

Shares of Tesla rose 11% in trading after Tuesday’s closing bell, but they are down more than 40% this year. The S&P 500 index is up about 5% for the year.

Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein said the company gave guidance about its future that was clearer than in the past, allaying investor concerns about production of the Model 2 and future growth. “I think for now we’re likely to see the stock stabilize,” he said. “I think Tesla provided an outlook today that can make investors feel more assured that management is righting the ship.”

But if sales fall again in the second quarter, the guidance will go out the window and concerns will return, he said.

Tesla reported that first-quarter revenue was $21.3 billion, down 9% from last year as worldwide sales dropped nearly 9% due to increased competition and slowing demand for electric vehicles.

Excluding one-time items such as stock-based compensation, Tesla made 45 cents per share, falling short of analyst estimates of 49 cents, according to FactSet.

The company’s gross profit margin, the percentage of revenue it gets to keep after expenses, fell once again to 17.4%. A year ago it was 19.3%, and it peaked at 29.1% in the first quarter of 2022.

Over the weekend, Tesla lopped $2,000 off the price of the Models Y, S and X in the U.S. and reportedly made cuts in other countries including China as global electric vehicle sales growth slowed. It also slashed the cost of “Full Self Driving” by one third to $8,000.

Tesla also announced last week that it would cut 10% of its 140,000 employees, and Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja said Tuesday the cuts will be across the board. Growth companies build up duplication that needs to be pruned like a tree to continue growing, he said.

Musk has been touting the robotaxi as a growth catalyst for Tesla since the hardware for it went on sale late in 2015.

In 2019, Musk promised a fleet of autonomous robotaxis by 2020 that would bring income to Tesla owners and make their car values appreciate. Instead, they’ve declined with price cuts, as the autonomous robotaxis have been delayed year after year while being tested by owners as the company gathers road data for its computers.

Neither Musk nor other Tesla executives on Tuesday’s call would specify when they expect Tesla vehicles to drive themselves as well as humans do. Instead, Musk touted the latest version of Tesla’s autonomous driving software — which the company misleadingly brands as “Full Self Driving” despite the fact that it still requires human supervision — and said that “it’s only a matter of time before we exceed the reliability of humans, and not much time at that.”

It didn’t take the Tesla CEO long to begin expounding on the possibility of turning on self-driving capabilities for millions of Tesla vehicles at once, although again without estimating when that might actually occur. BANGKOK – A huge pile of money was displayed at a press conference held on Tuesday at the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau’s (CCIB) headquarters in Muang Thong Thani where cyber police announced the results of “Operation Black Hat,” a crackdown on a criminal network that lured elderly people into investing in cryptocurrency. They seized assets worth 125 million baht.

Pol. Lt. Gen. Worawat Wattanakornbancha, Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau commissioner, said that the case originated from complaints filed last year by victims who were deceived into investing in digital assets or cryptocurrency by scammers using fake profiles. The victims were unable to withdraw their investments, resulting in losses of over 530 million baht.

The investigation revealed that the scam operated across multiple jurisdictions and followed a similar modus operandi.

Investigators found that 308 million baht of the losses were attributable to elderly victims. They obtained arrest warrants for 90 suspects and arrested more than 23, mostly Chinese, Singaporean, Laotian, Vietnamese and Thai nationals.

During the investigation, the CCIB also seized the websites “ufabetjc” and “play beer777,” which had an annual turnover of over 13 billion baht. Seven suspects were arrested, including beneficiaries, financial managers and account holders. Cash worth 117.8 million baht, a Porsche worth about 8 million baht and other items were also seized, bringing the total value of assets to over 125 million baht.

After the arrests, investigators discovered a link between the financial traces of the cryptocurrency investment scam and those of online gambling websites. They found that the money obtained through the investment fraud was laundered through the online gambling sites.

The investigation reveals that the criminal group had a clear division of work. Suspect Kanchanipit, who was also involved in the online gambling websites, acted as the financial manager for various transnational criminal groups. The money laundering process involved converting criminal proceeds into cryptocurrency.

The CCIB works with the Anti-Money Laundering Office to seize and freeze the assets associated with the offense. Once the investigation is complete, the assets are distributed to the victims.

French Man Caught Selling Drugs to Koh Phangan Tourists

KOH PHANGAN – Surat Thani police officers and the Pa Cha Da Special Operation Unit jointly arrested Mr. Ilan, age 41 years, French nationality at the bar of a hotel in Koh Phangan District, Surat Thani Province on April 23.

The evidence used in the arrest included 19.7 grammes of cocaine, 23 ecstasy pills, a digital scale, 6,000 baht in cash, and a waist bag. Some of the evidence was recovered from the suspect’s leased house in Village No. 1, Subdistrict Ban Tai, Koh Phangan.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Sermphan Sirikong, commander of Surat Thani Provincial Police, stated that police at Koh Phangan Police Station charged Mr. Ilan with distributing Class 1 narcotic drugs (ecstasy) without permission, an act of trade that spreads among the people, and selling Category 2 narcotics (cocaine) without permission, another act of trade that spreads among the people.

According to the Narcotics Code and the Act Promulgating the Narcotics Code, B.E. 2564 (2021), any individual who produces, imports, exports, distributes, or possesses category 1 narcotics without permission faces a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a fine of 1,500,000 baht.

Whoever produces, imports, exports, sells, or possesses Category 2 narcotics without permission faces imprisonment for one to fifteen years and a fine of 100,000 to 1,500,000 baht.

Police officers have been urged to adhere to tourism regulations, or quick-win, according to the policy of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, to maintain the safety of life, and property for tourists.

In addition, the deputy commander of Provincial Police Region 8, Pol. Maj. Gen. Saranyu Chamnanrat, has ordered the establishment of a rapid mobile team, the “Pa Cha Da Special Operation Unit,” to inspect entertainment venues, hotels, service establishments, risky spots, and precarious spots in order to prevent and suppress crimes that have an impact on the people.
