Military-ruled Myanmar Hosts Joint Naval Exercise With Russia, Its Close Ally And Top Arms Supplier

BANGKOK (AP) — The military-run Southeast Asian nation of Myanmar is holding its first joint naval exercise with Russia, state media reported Tuesday, with the countries carrying out maneuvers in the Andaman Sea.

Reports in the state-run Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper said that the maritime security exercise with Russia was being held until Thursday, 157 kilometers (85 miles) west of Myeik in Myanmar’s far south. Some Russian navy vessels sailed from Yangon to take part, state television MRTV reported.

The three-day joint drill involves aircraft and naval vessels and focuses on defending against threats from air, sea and land as well as other maritime security measures, the reports said.

Russia is a major supporter and arms supplier of Myanmar’s military government, which was installed after the army seized power and ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021. Russia defends Myanmar’s military government in international forums, and the ruling generals return the favor by generally supporting Moscow’s foreign policy agenda.

Myanmar has been treated as a pariah state by many Western nations since the military takeover and the violent suppression of protests against it, which has led to the deaths of thousands of civilians and given rise to an armed resistance movement in many parts of the country.

The Global New Light of Myanmar said the head of the military government, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, met on Monday with Adm. Nikolai Yevmenov, the commander-in-chief of Russia’s navy, at Thilawa port in the southern part of Yangon. The Russian officer welcomed an inspection by the Myanmar leader, who reviewed a guard of honor and toured one of the Russian vessels.

Min Aung Hlaing was briefed on the capacity of Russian weapons, the installation of modern systems and an anti-submarine helicopter, the reports said.

Tom Andrews, the U.N. independent investigator on human rights in Myanmar, in a report in May to the Geneva-based Human Rights Council identified $406 million in weapons and materiel that went to the Myanmar military from Russia, $267 million from China, $254 million from Singapore, $51 million from India and $28 million from Thailand.

Since the 2021 takeover, the report said, 28 Russian private and state-owned companies have transferred fighter jets and their spare parts, advanced missile systems, reconnaissance and attack drones, attack helicopters and other systems to Myanmar’s military.

As an example of what he called the military’s brutality, Andrews pointed to its April 11 air strike using a Russian Yak-130 fighter jet on a ceremony in northern Myanmar attended by some 300 opponents of army rule. It was quickly followed by an attack by Russian Mi-35 helicopters on those who came to help. He said at least 160 people were killed, including many children.

The joint exercises come at a time when Myanmar’s military is facing the coordinated offensives of the pro-democracy resistance fighters and ethnic minority armed organizations that have seized strategic towns in the northern region of Sagaing and Shan state in the east.

Russian-made fighter jets are used in attacks on both the resistance fighters and ethnic armed groups.

Grant Peck reported from Bangkok. This story has been corrected to say that Monday’s ceremony at Yangon port was hosted by Russia’s navy, not Myanmar’s.

This encompasses various purposes, such as public relations photography, crafting annual reports, capturing images for stock market listings, producing credentials, and building portfolios. Employing the same guiding principle as with other photography genres, namely the ‘Emotional in Details’ approach, these corporate portraits are meticulously crafted to deliver something distinctive and remarkable, and effectively communicate the intended messages of brands and clients in alignment with their objectives.

He added, “What sets my photography apart is the ‘Emotional in Details’ approach. It’s a way of storytelling that blends details, themes, and messages that need to be communicated. This method aims to create lasting memories and stir emotions. By capturing the essence of people, organizations, and brands, this technique tells captivating stories through engaging visuals.

This is made even stronger by a deep understanding of marketing and branding, along with using the ‘Emotional in Details’ method across all types of photography. This combination helps the images to build a clear corporate brand identity. It makes a difference in terms of corporate image; emotional depth in the photos leaves a strong impact, connecting with the target audience and effectively conveying the messages customers want to get across.”

25 Alleged Fraudsters Detained In Cambodia To Be Extradited To Japan

Twenty-five Japanese nationals detained in September in Cambodia for allegedly running a phone scam operation out of a Phnom Penh apartment will soon be extradited to Japan for arrest, investigative sources said Tuesday.

Three Japanese men are thought to have escaped the raid, with local authorities trying to track them in the belief they fled to neighboring Thailand.

Investigators from several Japanese prefectural police authorities were dispatched to the Cambodian capital to facilitate the transfer which will take place on Wednesday at the earliest. Damage from the alleged fraud scheme is thought to run to at least hundreds of millions of yen, the sources said.

The Japanese nationals detained by Cambodian authorities are men ranging from 20 to 42 years old. Investigators are trying to uncover the full extent of the operation including the group’s hierarchy, the sources said.

File photo taken on Sept. 13, 2023, shows an apartment building in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh where a group of Japanese nationals were detained for allegedly running a phone scam operation. (Kyodo)

The group is believed to have run an operation making phone calls from the Southeast Asian country aiming to defraud victims in Japan. Some of the men were responsible for giving commands and handling cash flows.

Allegations against the group include calling a then 70-year-old woman in Hokkaido in northern Japan around August, claiming she had won the right to move into a nursing home, and then defrauding her of 500,000 yen ($3,300) to resolve a dispute the suspects concocted regarding her transfer.

Local authorities in Cambodia raided the apartment and detained the men on Sept. 11 after receiving a tip-off.

Dozens of mobile phones as well as computers and documents that appear to be manuals detailing how to defraud victims were confiscated. About 20 phones had been destroyed apparently to delete evidence, local investigative sources have said.

Three Thais Falls Victim To Human Trafficking In Taiwan

Bangkok – Three Thais had been deceived by a human trafficking syndicate that promised them employment in Taiwan. When they arrived in Taiwan, they were abandoned on a mountain.

Ekaphop Leuangprasert, the founder of the Saimai Tong Rod (Sai Mai must survive)  foundation, succeeded in helping three Thais to report their situation to the Central Investigation Bureau of the Royal Thai Police on November 7.

The victims are asking the police and the Ministry of Labor for help to catch the culprits behind this human trafficking. This is worrying because these traffickers create seemingly legitimate profiles and use social media to deceive potential victims who hope to find better job opportunities abroad, for example in South Korea or Taiwan.

Many people have fallen for this scam and ended up losing money for traveling expenses, only to be stranded or even forced to work in terrible conditions.

Furthermore, it has been found that these trafficking groups often operate under the guise of travel companies before exploiting the workers they smuggle in. This has also had a negative impact on Thailand’s reputation and has led to misunderstandings among Thai tourists who may be falsely associated with these illegal activities.
