Twitter Changes Rules Over Account Tracking Elon Musk’s Jet

Twitter on Wednesday suspended an account that used publicly available flight data to track Elon Musk’s private jet, despite a pledge by the social media platform’s new owner to keep it up because of his free speech principles.

Then, hours later, Musk brought back the jet-tracking account after imposing new conditions on all of Twitter’s users — no more sharing of anyone’s current location.

But shortly afterward, the account was suspended again. That came after Musk tweeted that a “crazy stalker” attacked a car in Los Angeles carrying his young son.

He also threatened legal action against Jack Sweeney, the 20-year-old college sophomore and programmer who started the @elonjet flight-tracking account, and “organizations who supported harm to my family.” It’s not clear what legal action Musk could take against Sweeney for an account that automatically posted public flight information.

Before Wednesday, the account had more than 526,000 followers.

“He said this is free speech and he’s doing the opposite,” Sweeney said in an interview with The Associated Press.

Sweeney said he woke up Wednesday to a flood of messages from people who saw that @elonjet was suspended and all its tweets had disappeared. Started in 2020 when Sweeney was a teenager, the account automatically posted the Gulfstream jet’s flights with a map and an estimate of the amount of jet fuel and carbon emissions it expended.

He logged into Twitter and saw a notice that the account was permanently suspended for breaking Twitter’s rules. But the note didn’t explain how it broke the rules.

Sweeney said he immediately filed an online form to appeal the suspension. Later, his personal account was also suspended, with a message saying it violated Twitter’s rules “against platform manipulation and spam.”

And then hours later, the flight-tracking account was back again, before it was shut down anew. Musk and Twitter’s policy team had sought to publicly explain Wednesday that Twitter now has new rules.

“Any account doxxing real-time location info of anyone will be suspended, as it is a physical safety violation,” Musk tweeted. “This includes posting links to sites with real-time location info. Posting locations someone traveled to on a slightly delayed basis isn’t a safety problem, so is ok.”

“Doxxing” refers to disclosing online someone’s identity, address, or other personal details.

For Sweeney, it was the latest in a longtime tangle with the billionaire. The University of Central Florida student said Musk last year sent him a private message offering $5,000 to take the jet-tracking account down, citing security concerns. Musk later stopped communicating to Sweeney, who never deleted the account. Their exchange was first reported by tech news outlet Protocol earlier this year.

But after buying Twitter for $44 billion in late October, Musk said he would let it stay.

“My commitment to free speech extends even to not banning the account following my plane, even though that is a direct personal safety risk,” Musk tweeted on Nov. 6.

Sweeney ran similar “bot” accounts tracking other celebrities’ airplanes. For hours after the suspension of the @elonjet account, other Sweeney-run accounts tracking private jets used by Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and various Russian oligarchs were still live on Twitter.

But by later Wednesday, Twitter suspended all of them, including Sweeney’s personal account. He also operates accounts tracking Musk’s jet on rival social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram.

Twitter didn’t respond to a request for comment. Musk has promised to eradicate automatically generated spam from the platform, but Twitter allows automated accounts that are labeled as such — as Sweeney’s were.

Its note to Sweeney about the suspension, which he shared with the AP, said “You may not use Twitter’s services in a manner intended to artificially amplify or suppress information or engage in behavior that manipulates or disrupts people’s experience on Twitter.” But that rationale was different from what Musk explained later Wednesday.

Sweeney had days earlier accused Musk’s Twitter of using a filtering technique to hide his tweets, and revealed what he said were leaked internal communications showing a Twitter content-moderation executive in charge of the Trust and Safety division ordering her team to suppress the account’s reach. The AP has not been able to independently verify those documents.

Sweeney said that he suspects the short-lived ban stemmed from anger over those leaks.

Musk has previously criticized that filtering technique — nicknamed “shadowbanning” — and alleged that it was unfairly used by Twitter’s past leadership to suppress right-wing accounts. He has said the new Twitter will still downgrade the reach of negative or hateful messages but will be more transparent about it.

In his push to loosen Twitter’s content restrictions, he’s reinstated other high-profile accounts that were permanently banned for breaking Twitter’s rules against hateful conduct, harmful misinformation or incitements of violence.

Sweeney said he originally started the Musk jet tracker because “I was interested in him as a fan of Tesla and SpaceX.”

In the weeks since the Tesla CEO took over Twitter, the @elonjet account has chronicled Musk’s many cross-country journeys from his home base near Tesla’s headquarters in Austin, Texas, to various California airports for his work at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters and his rocket company SpaceX.

It showed Musk flying to East Coast cities ahead of major events, and to New Orleans shortly before a Dec. 3 meeting there with French President Emmanuel Macron.

In a January post pinned to the top of the jet-tracking account’s feed before it was suspended, Sweeney wrote that it “has every right to post jet whereabouts” because the data is public and “every aircraft in the world is required to have a transponder,” including Air Force One that transports the U.S. president.

Europe Hosts Southeast Asian Leaders as Own Crises Mount

BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union and southeast Asian countries commemorated 45 years of diplomatic ties Wednesday at a summit overshadowed by political distractions in Europe, ranging from the war in Ukraine to a bribery scandal.

EU leaders hosted counterparts from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, in a nod to Asia’s economic rise. But the meeting took place amid increasing challenges for the 27-nation European bloc and a day before its own final summit of the year.

“We have to make sure that we have a strong position in our relationship with ASEAN,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte told reporters in Brussels. “We are talking about worldwide supply chains. We are talking about growth potential.”

The EU is seeking to expand trade and investment with much of the world, especially emerging economies, after being battered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, the war in Ukraine has added to Europe’s economic headwinds and put the bloc at risk of a recession.

Disrupted Russian energy supplies have affected financial markets and fueled inflation, driving up the consumer cost of everything from food to heating. Along with seeking out new energy sources abroad and at home, the EU is weighing devoting extra funds to help businesses in Europe cope with high fuel prices and to counter an American subsidy spree.

But the bloc’s struggle to impose a price cap on Russian natural gas and a European Parliament corruption case distracted attention away from Wednesday’s one-day EU-ÁSEAN summit.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who flew to Qatar to watch France’s semifinal match against Morocco in the World Cup on Wednesday evening, did not attend the event. On the side of the 10-nation ASEAN, Myanmar’s junta leader — Min Aung Hlaing — was absent because the EU refused to invite him.

The other ASEAN members are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The members, which together represent 660 million people, rank among the world’s top 10 economies.

“We identify the same priorities — ASEAN does — as the EU,” Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said. “Although we come from very different places, from very different conditions, we have a very similar world view of the challenges that we all face.”

High on the agenda was a push for deeper infrastructure ties between the EU and ASEAN. Europe announced 10 billion euros ($10.6 billion) for ASEAN-region projects under its “Global Gateway” program, which is something of a European answer to China’s “Belt and Road Initiative.”

“In the global world that we are living in today, it is very important that we are connected to like-minded countries,” Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas said.

Both sides also focused on creating more clean energy to fight climate change and on deepening economic relations through greater trade. An EU push more than a decade ago for a free-trade agreement with ASEAN as a whole gave way to targeted deals with individual members.

The EU has negotiated trade pacts with Singapore and Vietnam and is in talks with Indonesia on a similar accord. European free-trade negotiations with Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines are on hold.

“Trade is a powerful tool for promoting growth and closer ties between our regions,” said Charles Michel, who chairs meetings of EU leaders. “Our trade agreements with Vietnam and Singapore have already boosted our common trade and continue to help drive our recovery.”

CP Foods demonstrates the success of its biogas system in combating climate change.

Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited or CP Foods is promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable food production in line with the Bio-Circular-Green economy model (BCG) by producing biogas at animal farms and food manufacturing plants across Thailand producing biogas system. This year marks the company’s second decade use of biogas at all farm operations including hog, poultry, and layers, to convert animal manure and wastewater to energy allowing it to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Somporn Jermpong, executive vice president for swine business of CP Foods said the Company prioritizes environmentally friendly and sustainable food production system. The company promotes energy efficiency and increases the use of renewable energy. The company has treated animal manure and wastewater in the farm-processing and food businesses though biogas system which convert to power generation to use in its operations in a bid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

CP Foods’ swine business has been a pilot business for using biogas system for 21 years and has transferred knowledge to small-scale swine farmers to install the system and help combat global climate change. The biogas system is an important role of the Green Farm system, which was initiated by the swine business unit to make hog farms more environmentally friendly. The company’s 98 hog farms have been producing biogas for conversion into farm electricity, allowing the farm to save electricity cost by 50-80% as well as    reduce odors, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Treated water from biogas system is recycled and reused in biogas system for mixing with manure. Furthermore, the operations provide residual and treated water to nearby farmers who want to increase their plant yield and save fertilizer cost.

Biogas production at hog farms and layer complexes is part of the company’s strategy for combating climate change as well as reducing waste to landfill and incineration. Biogas systems developed by the company have the potential to replace 69 million units of electricity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 490,000 tons of CO2 equivalent per year. Police Raid More EU Parliament Offices in Corruption Probe

BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgian police conducted more raids at European Parliament offices Monday as the legislature’s president pledged to launch an internal investigation into corruption allegations and the bloc’s top official called for the creation of an EU-wide independent ethics body.

Prosecutors investigating alleged influence peddling by a Gulf country at the European Parliament charged four people over the weekend with corruption, participation in a criminal group and money laundering. Parliament Vice President Eva Kaili of Greece was relieved of her duties.

The prosecutors declined to identify the country suspected of offering cash or gifts to parliament officials in exchange for political favors. Several members of the assembly and some Belgian media linked the investigation to Qatar, which is currently hosting soccer’s gala event, the World Cup.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied any wrongdoing.

Police conducted Monday’s raids at European Parliament offices in Brussels to seize computer data belonging to 10 parliamentary assistants, prosecutors said. Officers have conducted 20 raids in total as part of an investigation launched four months ago.

“Several hundred thousand euros have been seized in three different places: 600,000 euros at the home of one of the suspects, several hundred thousand euros in a suitcase seized in a room of a Brussels hotel, and about 150,000 euros in an apartment belonging to an MEP,” prosecutors said.

Kaili, who was relieved of her duties over the weekend, was expelled Monday from the legislature’s Socialists and Democrats group with immediate effect.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the EU’s executive arm, said the accusations against Kaili threatened the confidence EU citizens have put in the 27-nation bloc’s institutions.

She said the independent ethics body she proposed establishing would cover lobbying activities at the European Commission, the European Council and European Parliament, as well as at the European Central Bank, the European Court of Justice and the European Court of Auditors.

The EU does not already have comprehensive lobbying regulations.

“The principles of having such an ethics body where there are very clear rules on what has to be checked, how and when and what has to be published, how and when would be a big step forward,” she said.

As the European Parliament began its last plenary session of the year in Strasbourg, France, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola promised “there will be no sweeping under the carpet.”

She said the Parliament and European democracies were “under attack” by “malign actors, linked to autocratic third countries.”

“We will launch a reform process to see who has access to our premises, how these organizations, NGOs and people are funded, what links with third countries they have,” Metsola added. “We will ask for more transparency on meetings with foreign actors and those linked to them. We will shake up this Parliament and this town, and I need your help to do it.”

On Friday, police in Belgium’s capital carried out multiple raids as part of the investigation and reported seizing cash, computer equipment and mobile telephones.

The federal prosecutor’s office, without identifying any individual, said four of six people detained that day were subsequently charged, and two were released.

Raids also took place in Italy on Sunday.

Prosecutors have confirmed that a parliament member was arrested but declined to confirm it was Kaili, 44, a former TV news anchor. They said they suspect “the payment of large sums of money, or the offer of significant gifts” to people holding with influential positions at the European Parliament.

Metsola relieved Kaili of her duties over the weekend. Kaili’s party in Greece also suspended her and publicly distanced itself from remarks she made in the EU parliament last month praising Qatar,

Qatar came under heavy international pressure to introduce labor reforms in recent years as it sought to build new World Cup stadiums in record time, often using migrant workers who toiled for long hours under harsh conditions.

The EU and Qatar have strengthened their economic relationships since the start of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Moscow slashed supplies of natural gas used to heat homes, generate electricity and power industry in Europe in response to EU sanctions, worsening an energy crisis that is fueling inflation.

The EU has looked for alternatives to buy liquefied natural gas on a long-term basis, notably in Qatar.

In April, the European Commission proposed lifting visa requirements for short EU stays by Qatari nationals. Metsola said negotiations with the Parliament on the proposal would be postponed.

“I was scheduled today to announce the opening of the negotiating mandate for the visa waiver report with Qatar and Kuwait,” she said. “In light of the investigations, this report must be sent back to committee.”

Asked whether Belgian authorities were in touch with the European Commission as part of their investigation, von der Leyen said she had no clue. She added that rhe commission was reviewing its own political transparency register.

“If any kind of new information occurs, we will have to act and react to that,” she said.

Several Socialists and Democrats lawmakers fell on their swords after the group said that any member being investigated should be suspended, or should give up certain of their duties if any of their staff members were under investigation.

Belgian EU lawmaker Marc Tarabella suspended himself outright. His compatriot, Maria Arena, stepped down as chair of the assembly’s Human Rights Committee

“Following the revelations of suspicion of corruption linked to Qatar and the European Parliament, and the search of one of my assistants in the framework of this affair, I have decided that temporarily I will no longer preside over meetings of the Human Rights Committee,” Arena tweeted.

Italian S&D lawmaker Pietro Bartolo also temporarily stepped down as shadow rapporteur for the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee. Another Italian member of the European Parliament, Andrea Cozzolino, stopped performing certain tasks temporarily.

Ghent University Professor Hendrik Vos, an EU expert, told The Associated Press the case could have lingering repercussions on the generally positive image of the European Parliament.

“There has never been such a massive corruption scandal hitting the Parliament,” he said. “It is so profound because it jars so fundamentally with what Parliament pretends to stand for. The Parliament pretends to stand for transparency, unable to be bribed, to defend fundamental values. And then, you get something like this.”

Former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried Arrested in the Bahamas

NEW YORK (AP) — The former CEO of failed cryptocurrency firm FTX, Sam Bankman-Fried, has been arrested in the Bahamas at the request of the U.S. government, U.S. and Bahamian authorities said Monday.

The arrest was made Monday after the U.S. filed criminal charges that are expected to be unsealed Tuesday, according to U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. Bankman-Fried had been under criminal investigation by U.S. and Bahamian authorities following the collapse last month of FTX. The firm filed for bankruptcy on Nov. 11, when it ran out of money after the cryptocurrency equivalent of a bank run.

“We expect to move to unseal the indictment in the morning and will have more to say at that time,” Williams said.

Bahamian Attorney General Ryan Pinder said the Bahamas would “promptly” extradite Bankman-Fried to the U.S. once the indictment is unsealed and U.S. authorities make a formal request. FTX is headquartered in the Bahamas and Bankman-Fried has largely remained in his Bahamian luxury compound in Nassau since the company’s failure.

A spokesman for Bankman-Fried had no comment Monday evening. Bankman-Fried has a right to contest his extradition, which could delay but not likely stop his transfer to the U.S.

Bankman-Fried’s arrest comes just a day before he was due to testify in front of the House Financial Services Committee. Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., chairwoman of the committee, said she was “disappointed” that the American public, and FTX’s customers, would not get to see Bankman-Fried testify under oath.

Bankman-Fried was one of the world’s wealthiest people on paper, with an estimated net worth of $32 billion. He was a prominent personality in Washington, donating millions of dollars toward mostly left-leaning political causes and Democratic political campaigns. FTX grew to become the second-largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world.

That all unraveled quickly last month, when reports called into question the strength of FTX’s balance sheet. Customers moved to withdraw billions of dollars, but FTX could not meet all the requests because it apparently used its customers deposits to cover bad bets at Bankman-Fried’s investment arm, Alameda Research.

Bankman-Fried said recently that he did not “knowingly” misuse customers’ funds, and said he believes his millions of angry customers will eventually be made whole.

The House Financial Services Committee will still hear testimony Tuesday from current CEO, John Ray III. Ray, who took over FTX on Nov. 11 and is a long-time restructuring specialist, has said in court filings that the financial conditions at FTX were worse than at Enron.

Bahamian authorities plan to continue their own investigation into Bankman-Fried.

“The Bahamas and the United States have a shared interest in holding accountable all individuals associated with FTX who may have betrayed the public trust and broken the law,” said Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis, in a statement.

Ways to build a rehabilitation facility “Wat Tham Krabok Model.”

Permanent Secretary for Interior discusses ways to build a rehabilitation facility, raising the model of Wat Tham Krabok, Saraburi province and expanding the treatment effect for drug patients nationwide, emphasizing the need to synchronically develop the body and the heart.

On December 11, 2022, Mr. Suttipong Juljarern, Permanent Secretary for Interior revealed after visiting the area of Wat Tham Krabok, Khun Klon Subdistrict, Phra Phutthabat District, Saraburi Province on December 10, 2022, to discuss ways to establish a rehabilitation treatment facility to reduce the number of drug users.

The approach has received blessed mercy from Phra Ajarn Boonsong Thanjaro, the president of the Tam Krabok foundation, who joined in giving advice and participated in discussion. The discussions were attended by high-ranking executives and civil servants in the area, such as Mr. Manrat Rattanasukhon, Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, Mr. Phol Damtham, Governor of Saraburi Province, Pol. Maj. Gen. Wichit Bunchinwuttikul, Saraburi Provincial Police Commander, Mr. Polwat Thienchaimongkol, Deputy Governor of Saraburi Province, District Chief of Phra Phutthabat District and related network partners.

Mr.Suttipong said that the Ministry of Interior has a clear policy in taking part of the war on drugs, since the beginning of November 2022 has ordered all mechanisms to increase the level of intensity and various measures, including “repressive measures” by bringing drug traffickers to prosecution according to the law : “Prevention measures and social orderings” by setting up checkpoints, extraction points and continuously creating awareness to prevent children, youth and risk groups from getting involved in drugs and “treatment measures to rehabilitate the patient” so that those who have been treated will not return to be involved in drugs and to return good people to the hearts of their parents, families, communities and society.

In order for the government and the Ministry of Interior to have complete and maintain accurate information, the Department of Provincial Administration has been ordered to survey the number of drug dealers in all areas across the country. The process was completed on October 31, 2022, with approximately 18,000 traders and approximately 120,000 addicts identified, along with conducting a survey to find a place to be established as a treatment, rehabilitation, care for addicts and narcotics with a fenced area and also build facilities with hygienic utilities which now has 158 locations.

359632

Mr. Manrat Rattanasukon, Director-General of the Department of Provincial Administration, said that the Department of Provincial Administration has instructed every district to provide at least one treatment and rehabilitation center in order to prepare for the initial introduction of approximately 120,000 drug users into the process. The Permanent Secretary for Interior has determined to provide 15 days of treatment, for not more than 50 cases per location, in 878 places, at the same time, which will receive about 43,900 people per class and will continue to organize training for all 3 series of treatments. In addition, each area has set up a mechanism at the level area, with officials responsible for driving according to the above guidelines. At present, the Department of Provincial Administration has proposed requesting budget support from the government and is ready to take action immediately.

Phra Ajahn Boonsong Thanjaro, the president of the Tham Krabok Foundation, said that the key to making drug patients turn back to normal people has two main factors: physical factors, which people must first understand that the drug directly affect the body, especially the nervous system. In a treatment facility of Tham Krabok had to use medicinal water mixed with herbs called anti-poison and panacea in which the treated must drink four times a day after activity and the treated must be exercised in which can help keep the body healthy, prevent diseases and can also stimulate many types of hormones in the body : such as Growth hormone, a hormone that is important to repair and strengthen the body, Testosterone, a hormone that makes the body awake and help in strengthening the muscles, Insulin and Thyroid Hormone), hormones that control sugar levels and metabolic processes in the body.

In addition, exercise can also stimulate the brain to release happy hormones such as Dopamine, a hormone that makes you feel good, Serotonin, a hormone that reduces depression, Endorphin, a hormone of happiness that can reduce muscle pain and injury. The next factor is the mental state. The goal is to make patients realize the value of life and see the love and care from their families and changing to be a good person who does not turn back to drugs. In this aspect of the mind, it is important to make the patient to be truthful to themselves and generate self-respect, which will be the best immune to drugs.
