BANGKOK – The People’s Party has condemned an attack on a leader of the Myanmar migrant workers’ group Bright Future during a demonstration outside the United Nations office on Monday morning (2 November), calling for those responsible to face legal action regardless of their nationality or political views.
According to the party’s statement, a group of individuals physically assaulted a leader of Bright Future while the group was holding an activity to press for policy changes concerning Myanmar nationality verification centres, known as CI centres.
The party said political differences must never be used to justify violence, stressing that everyone, whether Thai citizens or migrant workers, is entitled to equal protection under the law.
“Regardless of whether people agree with the protesters’ demands, everyone has the right to life and physical safety and must receive equal protection under the law without discrimination,” the party said.
It added that any legal concerns surrounding demonstrations or political demands should be addressed through dialogue or lawful procedures rather than physical confrontation.
The party also stressed that freedom of political expression is protected under the constitution, but no political ideology should place anyone above the law or serve as an excuse to violate the rights of others.
It urged police and security authorities responsible for the area to go beyond simply stopping the violence and to collect evidence, including footage of the incident, to pursue legal action against those responsible.
The party said investigations must be conducted impartially, without discrimination based on nationality, legal status or political affiliation.
“The rule of law becomes meaningless if the country’s laws protect only those who share the same views while neglecting the rights and safety of those who think differently,” the party said.
