SAMUT PRAKAN – Officials from the Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today jointly announced the results of a raid on a warehouse where counterfeit cosmetics of well-known brands were stored.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Witthaya Sriprasertphap, head of the CPPD, reported that the police had received complaints from people who bought products online but received substandard products instead. When they investigated, they found cosmetic products that weren’t registered, had no Thai labels and were being sold far below market prices.
They then traced the warehouse and distribution location before obtaining a search order from the Samut Prakan Provincial Court to search a warehouse in Tail Ban sub-district, Mueang Samut Prakan district.
During the raid, they found over 60 different types of counterfeit products, including toothpaste, skin care creams, and cosmetics. They found 2 clearly counterfeit cosmetic products, 18 that could be counterfeit, and 32 without registration numbers or Thai labels. In total, they confiscated around 31,000 pieces of evidence worth more than 20 million baht. They also arrested a woman who claimed to look after the warehouse.
The woman stated that all the products belonged to Mr. Qiu Chan Lin, a Chinese citizen who ordered trendy and popular products from China online. He then stored them in his warehouse and operated 44 online stores to advertise and sell them. The entire operation was run from China and had been running for about a year, shipping 2,000 to 3,000 items a day and potentially earning over 100 million baht a year.
The officers are gathering evidence to request an arrest warrant for Mr. Qiu. If he enters Thailand, they will take legal action immediately.
