PAI — A Dutch tourist was rescued Monday after falling from a canyon in Pai in the northern province of Mae Hong Son, an official said.
Renata Dykstra, a 46-year-old tourist from the Netherlands reportedly fell off the narrow ledges of the Grand Canyon of Pai into an approximately six-meter-deep hole at about 5:30pm, Thanakrit Chantajumrussin, the Pai district chief said Monday.
The official said emergency crews were able to rescue and hospitalize her at about 7pm.
“No one had ever fallen in that area before. She probably slipped because of the sand,” said Thanakrit said Tuesday.
The district chief said he has now ordered to install caution signs and fences in hazardous areas.
Pai Canyon, locally known as Kong Lan, is a maze of slabs popular among tourists for its narrow walkway over the deep cliffs.
On Monday night, Thanakrit went to visit Dykstra at the hospital and posted on Facebook that she had hurt her back and was undergoing an x-ray at Chiangmai Ram Hospital.
