Manila (DPA) — Eight trapped workers died Friday in a padlocked room in a warehouse razed by a fire in the Philippines, the Bureau of Fire Protection said.

The victims' room on the second floor was locked from the outside, preventing them from escaping the fire that struck in the Manila suburban city of Pasay before dawn, the bureau said.

Nine other workers escaped after the owner did not padlock their separate room, allowing them to jump to the roof of a nearby building, an initial investigation showed.

The bureau said the warehouse was being used to store DVDs and DVD players.
