Truck Hits Elephant Near Khao Yai, Driver Critically Injured

Truck Hits Elephant Near Khao Yai, Driver Critically Injured

PAK CHONG — A pickup truck carrying ice collided with a wild elephant near Khao Yai National Park early Saturday, seriously injuring the driver, police said.

The crash occurred before dawn on Jan. 4, 2026, on a rural highway along the boundary of Khao Yai National Park near a hotel in the Heo Pla Kang area of Moo Si subdistrict, Pak Chong district, in Nakhon Ratchasima province, said police Lt. Col. Saharat Suphannahphasat of Moo Si police station.

Officers and rescue volunteers found a box-style pickup truck heavily damaged at the front, with debris scattered across the road. The driver, identified as Suriya Lertrittha, 63, was trapped inside the vehicle with severe head injuries and heavy bleeding. Rescue workers freed him and rushed him to Bangkok Hospital–Khao Yai for treatment.

The elephant fled into the forest after the collision and had not been located, police said. The damaged truck was taken to Moo Si police station for further examination.

Police said preliminary information from local residents indicated the truck was travelling from the Thanarat Road intersection in Kut Khla village toward Klang Dong when the elephant likely crossed the road while returning to the park after foraging overnight. The driver may not have seen the animal in low light, leading to the crash.

The road runs alongside the boundary of Khao Yai National Park, where vehicle collisions with wild elephants have occurred before. Police noted that a similar incident several years ago resulted in a driver’s death.

Khao Yai National Park chief Chaiya Huaihongthong said park officials had been instructed to search the area to assess whether the elephant was injured. As of Saturday morning, the animal had not been found.

Woman Injured in Power Bank Explosion in Si Racha

Woman Injured in Power Bank Explosion in Eastern Thailand

SI RACHA  — A woman was injured after a power bank connected to her mobile phone exploded while she was carrying it in her bag, rescue officials said.

The incident occurred at about 7 pm on Jan. 3 at the Sahapat Airport area in Moo 5, Bueng subdistrict, in Si Racha district of Chonburi province. The Sawang Prateep Si Racha Rescue Radio Centre said it received reports from the public that a woman had been injured and required assistance.

Rescue workers arrived at the scene and found the woman suffering burn injuries. She was given first aid before being taken to Phyathai Hospital for further treatment.

Officials said an initial inspection found that the power bank exploded while it was charging the phone inside her bag. The phone was not damaged, but the explosion caused flames that spread to her bag, clothing and personal documents. The woman sustained burns to her arms and face.

A witness, Suphang Kaewwan, 33, a market vendor, said the woman ran to seek help near the market entrance while her clothes were on fire. The clothing, made of knitted fabric, caught fire quickly. People nearby used water to extinguish the flames before emergency workers arrived.

Another witness, Kritsaphon Wisetnakorn, 46, a drink seller, said he also helped pour water on the woman after seeing her clothes on fire. He said the blaze was caused by the power bank.

Witnesses urged the public to use power banks that meet safety standards and to avoid low-quality or cheap products, warning that such accidents can happen without notice.

Police rescue five passengers from a van stranded in floodwaters after following a GPS route into danger.

SAMUT SONGKHRAM — Highway police and local volunteers rescued five people from an electric van that became submerged in floodwaters under a bridge along Rama 2 Road on Saturday, authorities said.

Police said the KIA van, registered in Bangkok, was carrying four women and one man who were returning from Hua Hin. The driver, following GPS directions, attempted to make a U-turn under a bridge in Khlong Khon district, unaware that the water was deeper than expected due to high tide.

As the vehicle began to float, passengers opened the doors and called for help. Officers arrived promptly and safely evacuated all five people along with their valuables.

Authorities said the electric van will be recovered by a tow service coordinated with the insurance company, as removing it improperly could pose an electrical hazard.

Thai Esports Player Admits Standing In for Women’s Team Member at SEA Games

Cheerio (left) admitted he stood in for Tokyogurl (right) during the SEA Games competition.

BANGKOK — A Thai esports player has admitted he played under another person’s account during the women’s Arena of Valor (RoV) competition at the 33rd Southeast Asian Games in Thailand, leading to the disqualification of a national team athlete.

The player, known as “Cheerio,” posted a statement on TikTok confirming that he acted as a stand-in for “Tokyogurl” a member of Thailand’s women’s RoV team who competed in the Dark Slayer Lane position.

“I admit that I did it,” Cheerio said in his statement. “I deeply regret my actions and sincerely apologize to society, the Thai people and everyone affected.”

He said he accepts responsibility for the consequences and criticism, apologized to the Thailand Esports Federation, the women’s teams who lost opportunities because of the incident, tournament organizers and fans, and said the incident would serve as an important life lesson.

“I promise that I will never again act in a way that causes harm or brings embarrassment to the country,” he said, adding that he plans to reflect on his actions and improve himself.

Cheerio said he delayed speaking publicly because the backlash spread rapidly and he was unsure how to respond, but said he intends to livestream later to apologize and explain further.

Cheerio is a semi-professional RoV player who previously competed as a carry — a key damage-dealing role — for teams including Bangkok ESC in the Thailand Esports Pro League 2025, and is known among fans for his strong in-game performance.

The incident has sparked public criticism and renewed calls for stricter identity verification and fair-play enforcement in Thai esports competitions.

Green turtle lays large clutch of eggs on Phuket beach

PHUKET — Tourists welcomed the New Year with excitement after a green sea turtle came ashore to lay a large number of eggs on Karon Beach in Phuket.

At about 11 am on Jan. 3, 2026, Thai and foreign tourists gathered to watch as the adult female turtle emerged onto the sand at Karon Beach, in Karon subdistrict of Phuket’s Muang district.

After completing the nesting process, the turtle used her rear flippers to sweep sand over the nest, packing it down to conceal the eggs before crawling back into the sea.

Lifeguards stationed at Karon Beach later secured the nesting site by placing wooden stakes and rope around the area to prevent disturbance. They then notified the Karon municipality, which coordinated with officials from the Rare and Endangered Marine Animals Group under the Upper Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research Centre in Wichit, Muang district.

Authorities are expected to monitor and protect the nest as part of ongoing marine conservation efforts.

Thai Navy Detains 67 Cambodian Migrants Crossing Border Illegally

Officers provide drinking water to Cambodian migrants after they were detained near the Thai-Cambodian border in Chanthaburi.

CHANTHABURI — Thai authorities detained 67 Cambodian nationals who were attempting to enter Thailand illegally to seek work, the Royal Thai Navy said Saturday.

Rear Adm. Parat Rattanachaiphan, a Navy spokesperson, said the arrests were made around 5 a.m. in Pong Nam Ron district in Chanthaburi province, near the Thai-Cambodian border. The operation was carried out by a Marine task force in coordination with police and immigration officers.

The group consisted of 35 men, 25 women and seven children who were walking across the border into Thailand without authorization, he said.

Parat said the operation followed legal procedures and complied with Thailand’s law on preventing torture and enforced disappearance, with particular attention given to the welfare of women and children. Authorities provided basic humanitarian assistance, including food, water and first aid, before transferring the migrants to investigators at Ban Plaeng police station for legal processing and eventual repatriation.

The Navy said preliminary questioning indicated the migrants were Cambodians facing economic hardship, unemployment and lack of income in their home country, prompting them to risk illegal entry into Thailand in search of work to support their families.

The Navy said illegal migration poses risks to national security and public safety and can expose migrants to exploitation by transnational criminal networks. Authorities said enforcement would continue alongside a humanitarian approach that respects human rights.

The Navy said it will maintain strict border controls to safeguard national security while supporting long-term solutions through appropriate international cooperation.

Taxi Driver Ejects Tourists After Alleged Sexual Behaviour

PHUKET — A taxi driver in Phuket forced two foreign tourists out of his vehicle after they allegedly engaged in sexual behaviour during a late-night ride, according to a local social media post and the driver’s account.

On Jan. 3, 2026, the Facebook page Phuket Times shared photos with a caption claiming the incident took place inside a taxi on the island, alleging that the couple ignored repeated requests from the driver to stop their behaviour.

During the trip, the couple allegedly began behaving inappropriately inside the vehicle. The driver said he switched on the interior light and asked them to stop, but they refused and became increasingly agitated.

The driver said he eventually stopped the taxi on the roadside and ordered both passengers to get out. He added that the male tourist appeared angry and attempted to confront him, prompting the driver to say he would contact police.

According to the driver, the male tourist responded by saying he had money and would pay for the ride, insisting on continuing the journey. The driver declined, left the couple at the roadside and drove away.

Bangkok Retains Title as World’s Most Visited City in 2025 With 30 Million Visitors

Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace — the timeless heart of Bangkok.

Bangkok was named the world’s most visited city in 2025, welcoming about 30.3 million international arrivals, according to the Euromonitor International Top 100 City Destinations Index 2025.

The annual index, produced with Lighthouse, ranks 100 cities using more than 50 indicators across six areas, including tourism performance, infrastructure, safety, sustainability, economic activity and policy environment.

Euromonitor said global travel to the top 100 cities is expected to reach 702 million trips this year, up 8% from 2024 and accounting for nearly half of all international tourism worldwide.

Despite challenges such as a stronger baht, safety concerns and growing competition from regional hubs, Bangkok retained its top position, reflecting its continued appeal as a major global tourism and business destination.

The report noted that cities are shifting from high-volume tourism toward higher-value, more sustainable travel, while the adoption of artificial intelligence is becoming a key advantage in improving infrastructure, transport and visitor experience.

Hong Kong ranked second with 23.2 million visitors, followed by London, Macau and Istanbul. Kuala Lumpur was ranked 10th with 17.3 million arrivals.
