What We Know About Autism’s Causes and Any Potential Link to Tylenol

WASHINGTON (AP) — Many doctors and scientists were reeling Monday after President Donald Trump went on TV to insist that pregnant women should never take Tylenol and revive debunked theories about vaccines and autism.

Trump went beyond his own Food and Drug Administration’s more modest advice that doctors “should consider minimizing” the painkiller acetaminophen’s use in pregnancy — amid inconclusive evidence about whether too much could be linked to autism. His comments came as the administration also moved to make more available a possible but unproven autism treatment — and also announced more research into the disorder.

Dr. Steven Fleischman, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, worried that the Tylenol claims would terrify mothers-to-be and parents of children with autism.

“I don’t want you going back and looking and saying to yourself, ‘I shouldn’t have done this, I shouldn’t have done that.’ It’s nothing you did. It really is not,” he said. “Not treating the fever probably has more adverse effects that you need to worry about than taking the medication.”

As for vaccines, “studies have repeatedly found no credible link between life-saving childhood vaccines and autism,” said American Academy of Pediatrics president Dr. Susan Kressly. ”Any effort to misrepresent sound, strong science poses a threat to the health of children.”

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. promised earlier this year to determine the cause of autism by September. That baffled brain experts who say there is no single cause and that the rhetoric appears to ignore decades of science into the genetic and environmental factors that can play a role.

Here’s what we know about autism and the Trump administration’s new steps to address it.

What is autism?

Autism isn’t a disease. It’s a complex developmental condition better known as autism spectrum disorder that affects different people in different ways.

It can include delays in language, learning or social and emotional skills. For some people, profound autism means being nonverbal and having intellectual disabilities, but the vast majority of people experience far milder effects.

Autism rates have been going up for decades

There are two main reasons. First, the definition of autism broadened as scientists expanded their understanding of its wide range of traits and symptoms. That led to changes in the criteria doctors use to diagnose autism and improvements in screening.

At the same time, parents increasingly sought a diagnosis as autism became better known and schools began offering educational services they hoped could help their kids.

As late as the 1990s, only children with the most profound symptoms were considered to have autism. In the early 2000s, as the definition began changing, the autism rate was estimated to be 1 in 150 children. The latest count found 1 in about 31 children are affected by autism spectrum disorder.

The increase isn’t among the profound cases; it’s an increase in the milder cases that weren’t historically considered autism, said expert Helen Tager-Flusberg of Boston University.

There is no single test for autism, which is diagnosed mostly through developmental and behavioral assessments.

It’s hard to tell if there may be additional factors behind the increase.

What’s the state of autism research?

Science has shown autism is mostly rooted in genetics, with the discovery of several hundred genes that play a role. Those genes can be inherited, even if the parent shows no signs of autism, or mutations can occur as the brain is developing and its rapidly dividing cells make mistakes.

Experts say different combinations of genes and other factors can all affect how a fetal brain develops. They include such factors as the age of a child’s father, preterm birth and whether the mother had health problems during pregnancy such as fevers, infections or diabetes.

What about Tylenol?

Some studies have raised the possibility that taking the over-the-counter painkiller in pregnancy might be associated with a risk of autism — but many others haven’t found a connection. In addition, the Coalition of Autism Scientists said Monday that acetaminophen use during pregnancy hadn’t increased in recent decades like autism rates have. Acetaminophen is known in most countries outside the U.S. as paracetamol.

But untreated fevers in pregnancy, particularly the first trimester, increase the risk for miscarriages, preterm birth and other problems, according to the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

Part of the difficulty in settling the question is that studies using medical records can’t tell if the fever, or a drug to lower the fever, might be connected to later health.

The FDA wrote doctors on Monday advising them to minimize acetaminophen’s use during pregnancy but acknowledged uncertainty: “To be clear, while an association between acetaminophen and autism has been described in many studies, a causal relationship has not been established and there are contrary studies in the scientific literature.”

Tylenol’s label already advises women to ask their doctor about use in pregnancy, and the society continues to advise that it’s an appropriate option.

What is the possible new autism treatment?

Also Monday, the FDA announced it was taking initial steps to try to approve a folic acid metabolite called leucovorin as a treatment option for some people with autism. It’s based on a theory that some people have too little folate, a form of vitamin B, in the brain and that giving them more could alleviate some symptoms.

Women already are told to take folic acid before conception and during pregnancy because it reduces the chances of certain birth defects, advice that possibly could help lower autism risk as well, Tager-Flusberg said.

Leucovorin is sold for other health conditions and already used by some families in hopes of helping autism. But Tager-Flusberg cautioned that only a few small, first-step studies have been done so far.

“Is this something worth pursuing? Yes, it is in potentially a subset of individuals,” she said. But there needs to be a large, very rigorous study to prove if it really works.

What about vaccines?

Any concern that vaccines could be linked to autism has been long debunked, stress scientists and leading advocacy groups for people with autism.

Childhood vaccines — and how and when to give them in combination — go through rigorous studies, and safety tracking continues for years as the shots are used.

“No doubt children will suffer” from Monday’s claims, said Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician and vaccine expert at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

France Recognizes Palestinian Statehood at UN Meeting to Revive Peace Efforts

Saudi Arabia Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, left, and France President Emmanuel Macron, center, prepare to lead a high-profile meeting at the United Nations aimed at galvanizing support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict Monday, Sept. 22, 2025, at UN headquarters. (AP Photo/Yuki Iwamura)

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — As the Gaza war rages on, France recognized Palestinian statehood on Monday at the start of a high-profile meeting at the United Nations aimed at galvanizing support for a two-state solution to the Mideast conflict. More nations are expected to follow, in defiance of Israel and the United States.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement in the U.N. General Assembly hall received loud applause from the more than 140 leaders in attendance. The Palestinian delegation, including its U.N. ambassador, Riyad Mansour, could be seen standing and applauding as the declaration was made.

“True to the historic commitment of my country to the Middle East, to peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians, this is why I declare that today, France recognizes the state of Palestine,” Macron said.

Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta, and Monaco also announced or confirmed their recognition of a Palestinian state, a day after the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Portugal did. Germany, Italy and Japan took part in the conference but did not recognize such a state.

The meeting and expanded recognition of Palestinian statehood are expected to have little if any actual impact on the ground, where Israel is waging another major offensive in the Gaza Strip and expanding settlements in the occupied West Bank.

U.N. secretary-general Antonio Guterres said “statehood for the Palestinians is a right, not a reward.” That appeared to push back against the Israeli government, which says recognizing statehood rewards Hamas after its Oct. 7 attack that set off the war in Gaza two years ago.

Abbas says ‘enough violence and war’

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, forced to address the meeting by video after the U.S. revoked his visa, again condemned the “killing and detention of civilians, including Hamas’ actions on Oct. 7, 2023.”

He said the Palestinian Authority is establishing a new social welfare system after abolishing payments to the families of Palestinians killed or imprisoned by Israel, a decision taken months ago that had been a longstanding demand from Israel and the U.S.

Addressing the Israeli people, he said “enough violence and war,” and he wished Jews around the world a happy new year on the occasion of Rosh Hashana.

Abbas’ internationally recognized Palestinian Authority is led by rivals of Hamas and administers parts of the West Bank. It recognizes Israel, cooperates with it on security matters, and is committed to a two-state solution. Israel accuses the Palestinian Authority of incitement to militancy and has ruled out any role for it in postwar Gaza. Many Palestinians view the leadership in the West Bank as corrupt and increasingly autocratic.

International community widely backs a Palestinian state

Around three-fourths of the 193-member United Nations recognizes Palestine, but major Western nations had until recently declined to, saying one could only come about through negotiations with Israel.

Palestinians have welcomed the moves toward recognition, hoping they might someday lead to independence. “This is a beginning, or a glimmer of hope, for the Palestinian people,” Fawzi Nour al-Deen said Sunday as he held a bag on his head, joining thousands of people fleeing south from Gaza City. “We are a people who deserve to have a state.”

The creation of a Palestinian state alongside Israel in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem — territories seized by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war — is widely seen internationally as the only way to resolve the conflict, which began more than a century before Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack.

Israeli government is opposed to statehood

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government opposed Palestinian statehood even before the war and now says such a move would reward Hamas, the militant group that still controls parts of Gaza. He has hinted Israel might take unilateral steps in response, including annexing parts of the West Bank, which would put a viable Palestinian state even further out of reach.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric brushed off such threats, saying efforts to bring about a two-state solution should continue regardless of Israel’s actions. “I think we have to be determined in achieving the goal that we want to achieve, and we cannot be distracted by threats and intimidation,” he said.

Netanyahu is under pressure from his far-right coalition to move ahead with annexation, but the United Arab Emirates — the driving force behind the 2020 Abraham Accords, in which the UAE and three other Arab states forged ties with Israel — has called it a “red line,” without saying how it could affect the two countries’ now close ties.

Netanyahu said he would decide on Israel’s response to the Palestinian statehood push after meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House next week, their fourth meeting since Trump returned to office. The Israeli leader is set to address world leaders at the U.N. on Friday.

The Trump administration is also opposed to growing recognition of a Palestinian state and blames it for the derailment of ceasefire talks with Hamas. Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, walked away from the talks in July, and earlier this month an Israeli strike targeted Hamas negotiators in Qatar, a key mediator.

The Palestinians are politically fragmented

France and Saudi Arabia have advanced a phased plan in which a reformed Palestinian Authority would eventually govern the West Bank and Gaza with international assistance. It was overwhelmingly supported by the General Assembly on Sept. 12 by a vote of 142-10. Twelve members abstained.

Hamas, which won the last Palestinian national elections in 2006, has at times hinted it might accept a state on the 1967 lines but remains formally committed to a Palestinian state in all of the territory between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River, including Israel.

Israelis and Palestinians held U.S.-brokered peace talks beginning in the early 1990s, but those efforts repeatedly stalled because of outbreaks of violence and Israel’s expansion of settlements aimed at cementing its control over the West Bank. There have been no substantive peace talks since Netanyahu returned to office in 2009.

Advocates of the two-state solution say that without a Palestinian state, Israel will have to decide between the status quo, in which millions of Palestinians live under military occupation without equal rights, or a binational state that might not have a Jewish majority.

Super Typhoon Ragasa Slams Northern Philippines and Taiwan

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Thousands of people were evacuated from northern Philippine villages and schools and offices were closed Monday in the archipelago and neighboring Taiwan as one of this year’s strongest typhoons threatened to cause flooding and landslides on its way to southeastern China.

Super Typhoon Ragasa had sustained winds of 215 kph (134 mph) with gusts of up to 295 kph (183 mph) when it slammed into Panuitan island off Cagayan province on mid-afternoon Monday, Philippine forecasters said.

Tropical cyclones with sustained winds of 185 kph (115 mph) or higher are categorized in the Philippines as a super typhoon, a designation adopted years ago to underscore the urgency tied to such extreme weather disturbances.

Ragasa was heading west and forecast to remain in the South China Sea at least into Wednesday while passing south of Taiwan and Hong Kong before landfall on the Chinese mainland.

The Philippines’ weather agency warned of coastal inundation, saying “there is a high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights exceeding 3 meters (nearly 10 feet) within the next 24 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal localities” of the northern provinces of Cagayan, Batanes, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

Power was knocked out on Calayan island and in the entire northern mountain province of Apayao, west of Cagayan, disaster-response officials said. There were no immediate reports of casualties or further damage from Ragasa, which is locally called Nando.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. suspended government work and all classes Monday in the capital and 29 provinces in the main northern Luzon region.

More than 8,200 people were evacuated to safety in Cagayan while 1,220 fled to emergency shelters in Apayao, which is prone to flash floods and landslides. Domestic flights were suspended in northern provinces lashed by the typhoon while fishing boats and inter-island ferries were prohibited from leaving ports due to rough seas.

Ragasa, the 14th weather disturbance to batter the Philippines this year, comes while authorities and both chambers of Congress investigate a corruption scandal involving alleged kickbacks that resulted in substandard or non-existent flood control projects.

Taiwan’s southern Taitung and Pingtung counties ordered closures in some coastal and mountainous areas as well as on the outlying Orchid and Green islands. Ragasa also forced the cancellation of afternoon flights to outlying islands and suspended various ferry services, the Central News Agency reported.

In Fujian province, on China’s southeast coast, 50 ferry routes were suspended. Officials in Shenzhen, the southern Chinese tech hub, planned to relocate about 400,000 people, including residents living in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Shenzhen’s airport said it will halt flights, starting Tuesday night.

China’s National Meteorological Center forecast the typhoon would make landfall in the coastal area between Shenzhen city and Xuwen county in Guangdong province on Wednesday.

China’s ruling Communist Party chief in Guangdong, Huang Kunming, urged departments across the region to minimize harm and “fully enter emergency state and war-ready state.”

Ragasa is expected to sweep south of Hong Kong and Macao. While Hong Kong’s airport is expected to remain open, the city’s airport authority said flights would be significantly reduced after 6 p.m. Tuesday and most flight operations would be affected on Wednesday.

Hong Kong’s flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways said passenger flights scheduled to depart and arrive in the city after 6 p.m. Tuesday will be suspended, with more than 500 flight cancellations expected.

Other Hong Kong-based airlines announced their flights would be disrupted, including budget airline HK Express, which reported a cancellation of over 100 flights between Tuesday and Thursday.

All schools in Hong Kong and Macao will be closed for the next two days. More than the usual number of sandbags have been provided to flood-prone areas in Hong Kong, while Macao police urged people living in low-lying areas to prepare for possible evacuation.

Ragasa is expected to bring torrential rains and heavy winds to China’s mainland coastal areas, starting Tuesday. Multiple cities such as Jiangmen, Yangjiang, Zhongshan and Zhuhai in southern Guangdong province ordered the suspension of schools, offices, factories and means of transportation.

The typhoon could make landfall in Guangdong more than once, China’s weather agency said.

Twin Lotus: 52 Years of Thai Herbal Innovation Goes Global

Twin Lotus products in English packaging designed for export markets.

BANGKOK — From pharmacy beginnings to international success, the Thai brand Twin Lotus has spent 52 years transforming perceptions of herbal products through innovation and persistence.

Twin Lotus has traveled far from its humble pharmaceutical origins to become Thailand’s leading herbal brand, now recognized across 24 countries through what Managing Director Bundit Leelertphand calls simple “word of mouth.”

After more than five decades in the herbal industry, the company has evolved from producing traditional dark brown toothpaste that many were hesitant to try, to offering over 150 products spanning oral care, beverages, and medicines that compete on the global stage.

From Medicine to Personal Care

The Twin Lotus story began in 1973 when founder Dr. Boonkij Leelertphand, inspired by his grandfather’s herbal knowledge, established Chai Boonkij Pharmacy to market herbal medicines under the Theppanom brand.

Regulatory changes in pharmaceutical distribution prompted a strategic pivot in 1977, leading the company to focus on personal care products, starting with herbal toothpaste and soap.

“My father wanted to get into the herbal business from the beginning,” Bundit Leelertphand told Prachachat Business in an exclusive interview. The mechanical engineering graduate from Imperial College London joined the family business in 2000, initially managing factory operations before taking over marketing leadership in 2015.

Second-Generation Innovation

Under Bundit’s leadership, Twin Lotus underwent significant modernization. Production lines were upgraded, warehouses expanded, and new machinery procured both domestically and internationally.

A crucial restructuring separated research and development from quality control, creating specialized teams for formulation research, active ingredient development, and food and beverage products.

“Scientific expertise has been applied to ensure credibility,” Bundit explained, noting the company’s collaboration with universities, research institutions, and innovation centers, supported by an in-house testing department.

Today, the Twin Lotus Group operates three companies:

  • Twin Lotus Co Ltd: Oral care, body care, hair care, and health drinks
  • Boonsunanta Co Ltd: Nutritional supplements and herbal medicines
  • Bua Siam Trading Co Ltd: China distribution operations

Reinventing Thai Toothpaste

The transformation of Twin Lotus toothpaste exemplifies the brand’s evolution. Where the original dark brown herbal formula once deterred consumers, the company now offers diverse formulations targeting specific oral health needs.

New products emerge through consumer research, including in-store surveys and focus groups, with flavors designed to be “refreshing, unique and suitable for everyday use without being too overpowering.”

Beyond the classic green box formula, variants now include Everfresh, Andrographis paniculata, and gold medal-winning Herbal Salt, plus children’s toothpaste with fruit enzymes.

This innovation has secured Twin Lotus the second-largest share of Thailand’s herbal toothpaste market, with approximately 38 million tubes sold annually, generating around 1.5 billion baht ($47.2 million) in sales.

twin lotus 3

Diversification Success

About a decade ago, Twin Lotus expanded beyond personal care into beverages and nutraceuticals—a move that proved prescient.

The diversification began when Bundit’s father built bird’s nest houses in southern Thailand, using proceeds to support underprivileged communities. His older brother transformed this into a successful ready-to-drink bird’s nest product, tapping into Thailand’s 3.5 billion baht bird’s nest market.

The company later launched herbal-refined chicken essence with a milder taste profile, leveraging decades of herbal medicine experience to enter dietary supplements and pharmaceuticals, backed by laboratory and clinical testing.

Conquering China and Beyond

Twin Lotus now exports to 24 countries across Asia, Europe, and America, with China emerging as the most promising market despite initial challenges.

“My father had already targeted China as a key market decades ago,” Bundit recalled. “Despite initial difficulties, perseverance eventually paid off with the success of bird’s nest drinks.”

While toothpaste launched the China expansion, bird’s nest beverages now represent the company’s best-selling export product. Overcoming regulatory barriers and costly distribution, Twin Lotus pivoted to online marketing and influencer campaigns that resonated with Chinese consumers.

twin lotus 5

Bundit outlined four principles for international success:

  • Finding trustworthy, transparent partners
  • Aligning product standards with local requirements
  • Supporting partners within their budgets while maintaining sincerity
  • Building strong, lasting relationships

The company targets 20% annual growth in international markets while adapting products to local demand.

Staying Competitive

In today’s crowded herbal market, Twin Lotus maintains its edge through several strategies:

  • Positioning as a “natural innovation leader” through credible research and awards
  • Leveraging digital platforms and influencers to communicate product benefits
  • Conducting ongoing market research to identify new product opportunities
  • Continuously updating flavors, fragrances, and eco-friendly packaging
  • Developing cost-effective yet impactful marketing strategies
  • Adapting to diverse customer psychology across market segments

The company emphasizes corporate governance, employee welfare, and business integrity alongside product innovation.

twin lotus 8

Vision for the Future

After 52 years, Twin Lotus aims for recognition as a true international leader in natural innovation—validated not just through marketing claims, but proven research trusted by academic and government institutions.

A key objective involves advancing herbal medicine by developing alternatives to chemical pharmaceuticals.

Reflecting on two decades of experience competing against global giants in the toothpaste industry, Bundit emphasized that success requires “clear differentiation and a deep understanding of consumer psychology.”

“Competition has taught us that success depends on accurately identifying market segments and tailoring strategies to each target audience,” he concluded.

Twin Lotus stands as proof that traditional Thai herbal knowledge, combined with modern innovation and persistent international expansion, can build a globally recognized brand that bridges ancient wisdom with contemporary consumer needs.

Abandoned Newborn Elephant Calf Rescued in Kanchanaburi

Rescue team member tends to the injured elephant calf named 'Khao Tom' who was discovered abandoned in in Kanchanaburi's Lam Khlong Ngu National Park, on September 22, 2025.

KANCHANABURI — Thai Wildlife officials are providing intensive care to a day-old female elephant calf found abandoned in Lam Khlong Ngu National Park after her mother left the weak newborn behind and rejoined her herd.

The calf was discovered on September 22 in the middle of Huai Suea village forest in Chalae subdistrict, Thong Pha Phum district, prompting an immediate rescue operation involving park officials, Buddhist monks, village volunteers, and elephant monitoring teams.

Mother Abandons Weak Calf

Prathom Han Klang, an elephant behavior expert at the Elephant Conservation Foundation, said the calf was born at 2:30 p.m. on September 21. Her mother, believed to be 20-year-old “Mae Suksant,” abandoned the baby because it was not strong after birth before following her herd toward Thungyai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary.

“The mother elephant left the calf behind because it was not strong after birth,” Han Klang explained, noting this behavior occurs when mothers assess their offspring cannot survive the journey with the herd.

The rescue team has named the elephant calf “Khao Tom” (Rice Porridge), though officials acknowledge the grim reality facing the newborn. Based on similar cases, they know the likelihood of survival remains low, but caregivers are committed to providing every possible chance for recovery.

khao tom elephant 3
Wildlife officials provide care to the newborn elephant calf found alone in Kanchanaburi’s Lam Khlong Ngu National Park, on September 22, 2025.

Critical Care Operation

The rescue team, coordinated by Akkanit Klangpraphan, head of Lam Khlong Ngu National Park, transported the calf to the Forest Protection Unit for emergency treatment. Veterinarians discovered the baby suffers from physical weakness and a right hind leg injury preventing it from standing.

Elephant lover Kanchana Silpa-archa, advisor for the Chartthaipattana Party who is funding the rescue effort, said the calf initially received rice water and Enfagrow baby formula before being switched to more suitable Enfalac. Elephant mother’s milk has been donated from Wang Chang Lae Paniat elephant camp in Ayutthaya province.

Gradual Recovery

Care teams provided detailed updates on the calf’s progress throughout the night. At 3:00 AM, officials fed approximately 300ml of rice water after the calf had consumed a large amount at 11:30 p.m. The baby urinated 30-50ml, indicating normal bodily functions, though the injured leg remained unable to bear weight.

khao tom elephant 2
Rescue team members accompany the injured elephant calf during transport from Lam Khlong Ngu National Park to the wildlife protection facility in Kanchanaburi Province on September 22, 2025.

By 6:00 a.m., caregivers administered an additional 600-700ml of milk. The calf showed improving strength and could attempt sitting up independently, with staff helping maintain proper positioning to prevent bloating from prolonged lying.

Ongoing Treatment

Despite multiple attempts to stand, the calf’s hind legs cannot yet support its weight. Veterinarians continue assessing the right leg injury and developing treatment plans to help the elephant eventually walk and move normally.

The delicate rescue highlights the challenges facing Thailand’s wild elephant population, where mothers sometimes must make difficult survival decisions that leave vulnerable offspring requiring human intervention.

Officials emphasized that collecting and transporting elephant mother’s milk requires precise hygiene and temperature control, as any mistakes could prove fatal to the recovering calf.

Later, at 7:00 p.m. Monday, baby elephant Khao Tom was transported to the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Management Development Center in Suphan Buri Province, where she is under the care of veterinarian Dr. Phatthraphon Mani-on, Head of Wildlife Health Management at the Wildlife Conservation Office.

He posted a video with the caption: ‘We’ve arrived at our destination. She’s acting like a child playing in the car, flapping her ears back and forth, with people taking care of her.

Bangkok Police Raid Uncovers Massive Fake Silicone Trade

Police display confiscated silicone chin implants alongside other seized contraband during the raid on an illegal medical device operation in Bangkok, on September 22, 2025.

BANGKOK – Police have dismantled a major illegal operation selling unregistered silicone implants and medical products online to beauty clinics across Bangkok, seizing contraband worth 8 million baht ($251,525).

Police Lieutenant Colonel Weerapong Klaithong, Chief of the Consumer Protection Police Bureau (CPPB) Division 4, executed a search warrant from the Bangkok South Criminal Court alongside Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials, targeting an illegal online distributor supplying unregistered medical devices and pharmaceuticals to multiple beauty clinics in Bangkok.

During the search of a suspicious building in Soi Sathu Pradit 57, Bang Phong Phang Subdistrict, Yan Nawa District on September 22, authorities arrested 34-year-old Ekasit, who admitted to managing the operation.

Large-Scale Seizure

The search operation uncovered a substantial cache of illegal medical products, including 13,021 nose silicone implants, 1,404 chin silicone implants, and 1,192 pieces across 15 different pharmaceutical products, with authorities estimating the total value at 8 million baht ($251,525).

The investigation began after authorities received intelligence about the illegal distribution of substandard cosmetic implants and unregistered medications to more than 20 beauty clinics throughout Bangkok, an operation that had reportedly been running for over three years.

Multi-Year Illegal Sales Network

During questioning, Ekasit admitted to overseeing the distribution network that supplied both established beauty clinics and individual customers through online sales channels. The 34-year-old suspect now faces multiple charges including selling unlicensed medical devices, distributing modern pharmaceuticals without authorization, and trafficking unregistered medications.

The case has been transferred to CPPB investigators for further legal proceedings as authorities work to trace the full extent of the distribution network.

Health Risks of Illegal Implants

Police Colonel Pattanasakdi emphasized that all silicone implants for cosmetic procedures must meet “Medical Grade Silicone” standards – specially manufactured to be sterile and safe for human body use.

“Cosmetic silicone implants are classified as medical devices requiring FDA inspection and licensing to ensure quality, standards, and safety,” he warned. “Using illegal silicone or unregistered drugs poses serious health risks including inflammation, infection, disfigurement, or even death.”

Authorities vowed to continue intensive crackdowns on such illegal operations to protect public health and safety.

Body of Missing Bahraini Tourist Found After 3-Day Search Off Phuket Beach

Rescue teams search among rocks at Karon Beach where the body of Bahraini tourist Jasim was discovered on September 22, after going missing for three days following a drowning incident during dangerous sea conditions.

PHUKET — Thai officials have recovered the body of a Bahraini man who went missing after drowning off Karon Beach on September 19, following a three-day search operation.

The Karon Municipality rescue team reported the discovery to local authorities after locating the victim’s remains among rocks near the shoreline on the morning of September 22.

According to Karon Police Station investigations, three Bahraini brothers had been vacationing in Phuket since September 14, staying in the Patong area. On Friday evening, all three went swimming at Karon Beach despite red flag warnings indicating dangerous conditions with strong waves and winds.

During the incident, lifeguards successfully rescued two of the brothers and transported them to hospital, where they remain in good condition. However, the eldest brother, identified as Jasim, was swept away by powerful waves.

Following the incident, authorities launched an intensive search operation that continued for three days. The search team discovered his body lodged among coastal rocks before moving it back to shore.

Forensic doctors from Vachira Phuket Hospital conducted a preliminary examination at the scene before transporting the body to the hospital for a detailed autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Officials are coordinating with the Bahraini embassy to notify the victim’s family.

The incident highlights ongoing safety concerns at Phuket’s beaches during monsoon season, when red flag warnings are frequently issued due to hazardous swimming conditions.

Dozens Arrested and Hurt in Clashes with Police Near Philippine Presidential Palace

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine police arrested 49 people suspected of hurling rocks, bottles and fire bombs at officers and blocking heavily guarded roads and bridges leading to the presidential palace Sunday while a peaceful anti-corruption rally took place in the capital, officials and witnesses said.

The melee outside the country’s seat of power unfolded while more than 33,000 other protesters rallied in a historic park and a democracy monument in Manila. They expressed outrage over a corruption scandal involving lawmakers, officials and construction company owners who allegedly pocketed huge kickbacks from flood-control projects in the impoverished Southeast Asian country that is regularly buffeted by storms and typhoons.

The hourslong rampage by about 100 mostly club-wielding people, some of whom waved Philippine flags and displayed carton posters with anti-corruption slogans, wounded about 70 Manila law enforcers, according to the Manila police. Schools were canceled due to the violence.

Police said they lobbed tear gas to try to disperse the attackers, who sprayed graffiti on walls, toppled steel posts, shattered glass panels and ransacked the lobby of a budget inn along a popular road dotted with university campuses, banks and restaurants before dispersing at night.

Hours after the assault, police have yet to identify the attackers, some of whom carried black flags with the caricature of a skull and crossbones. It was also unclear if they had earlier participated in the peaceful protests before heading toward the presidential office. It was not immediately known if President Marcos Jr. was in the Malacanang presidential palace during the chaos.

Police said in a statement after the arrests that the situation was “contained” but warned that violence and vandalism would not be tolerated.

Protesting corruption

“I feel bad that we wallow in poverty and we lose our homes, our lives and our future while they rake in a big fortune from our taxes that pay for their luxury cars, foreign trips and bigger corporate transactions,” student activist Althea Trinidad told The Associated Press in Manila.

Trinidad lives in Bulacan, a flood-prone province north of Manila where officials said the most flood-control projects were being investigated either as substandard or nonexistent.

“Our purpose is not to destabilize but to strengthen our democracy,” Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, the head of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said in a statement. He called on the public to demonstrate peacefully and demand accountability.

Marcos first highlighted the flood-control corruption scandal in July in his annual state of the nation speech.

He later established an independent commission to investigate what he said were anomalies in many of the 9,855 flood-control projects worth more than 545 billion pesos ($9.5 billion) that were supposed to have been undertaken since he took office in mid-2022. He called the scale of corruption “horrible” and accepted his public works secretary’s resignation.

Public outrage erupted when a wealthy couple who ran several construction companies that won lucrative flood-control project contracts showed dozens of European and American luxury cars they owned during media interviews. The fleet included a British luxury car costing 42 million pesos ($737,000) that they said they bought because it came with a free umbrella.

Chinese Man Tricked into Myanmar Scam Ring Escapes to Thailand

Military officials escort a Chinese man who escaped from a scammer base in Myanmar into Thailand, handing him over to Phob Phra Police Station, Tak Province on September 21, 2025.

TAK — A Chinese man who thought he was heading to a job in Laos ended up trapped in a scam compound in Myanmar before making a desperate escape across the border into Thailand.

Thai soldiers on patrol along the Moei River discovered 43-year-old Zhou near a broken bridge at Ban Mo Koe Thai village in Phob Phra district on Sunday. The exhausted man had just swum across the river illegally, seeking help after escaping what he realized was a criminal operation.

Zhou told authorities he had been duped by what seemed like a legitimate job offer. On September 16, he arranged to meet a friend for work in Xishuangbanna, which he believed was in Laos. After traveling to the Thai border town of Phob Phra, he crossed into what he thought was Laos territory, where a car was waiting to pick him up.

“He had no idea he was actually entering Myanmar,” said a military source. “By the time he realized he’d been tricked into a scam operation, it was too late.”

Zhou managed to escape from the compound and made his way back to the river, swimming across to reach Thai territory where he hoped to find safety. However, since he crossed illegally at a prohibited border point, Thai authorities had to detain him.

Military officials turned Zhou over to local police, who charged him with entering Thailand without permission, even though he holds a valid Chinese passport.

The area where Zhou was held operates under the control of the Karen Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) and has become a major hub for online scam operations targeting victims worldwide. These criminal networks often trick people with fake job offers, then force them to participate in fraud schemes.

The incident comes as authorities on both sides of the border crack down on these operations. Earlier this year, Thai officials cut electricity and internet access to suspected scam compounds in Myanmar, while Chinese authorities have repatriated over 2,800 Chinese nationals who were caught up in similar schemes, many from the border city of Myawaddy.

UK, Australia and Canada Recognize a Palestinian State

LONDON (AP) — The U.K., Australia and Canada confirmed Sunday that they are formally recognizing a Palestinian state despite vociferous opposition from the U.S. and Israel.

The coordinated initiative from the Commonwealth nations and long-time allies of Israel reflects growing outrage at Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza and the steps taken by the Israeli government to thwart any efforts to create a Palestinian state, including by the continued expansion of settlements in the West Bank.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who has faced pressure to take a harder line on Israel within his own governing Labour Party, said the U.K.’s move is intended “to revive the hope of peace for the Palestinians and Israelis,” while insisting that it wasn’t a reward for Hamas.

“Today, to revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution, I state clearly as prime minister of this great country that the United Kingdom formally recognizes the state of Palestine,” Starmer said in his video message. “We recognized the state of Israel more than 75 years ago as a homeland for the Jewish people. Today we join over 150 countries who recognize a Palestinian state also. A pledge to the Palestinian and Israeli people that there can be a better future.”

The announcement was widely anticipated after Starmer said in July that the U.K. would recognize a Palestinian state unless Israel agreed to a ceasefire in Gaza, allowed the U.N. to bring in aid and took other steps toward long-term peace.

More countries are expected to do so at the U.N. General Assembly this week, including from France, which like the U.K., is one of the five permanent members of the Security Council.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in his statement that the three announcements Sunday were “part of a coordinated international effort to build new momentum for a two-state solution.”

Palestinian and Israeli reactions

President Mahmoud Abbas welcomed Britain’s announcement, stressing that it constitutes an important and necessary step toward achieving a just peace in accordance with international law.

There was no immediate reaction from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but ahead of the decision Sunday his spokeswoman, Shosh Bedrosian, said the leader considered the maneuver “absurd and simply a reward for terrorism.”

Not universally agreed

The U.K.’s recognition of a Palestinian state comes just days after a state visit to Britain by U.S. President Donald Trump, during which he voiced his disapproval of the plan.

Critics, including the U.S. and the Israeli government, which has shown no interest in a two-state solution, have condemned the plans, saying it rewards Hamas for its attack on Oct. 7, 2023.

As well as arguing that recognition is immoral, critics argue that it’s an empty gesture given that the Palestinian people are divided into two territories — the West Bank and Gaza — with no recognized international capital.

Historical overlay

The U.K. and France have a historic role in the politics of the Middle East over the past 100 years, having carved up the region following the defeat of the Ottoman Empire in World War I.

As part of that carve-up, the U.K. became the governing power of what was then Palestine. It was also author of the 1917 Balfour Declaration, which backed the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people.”

However, the second part of the declaration has been largely neglected over the decades. It noted “that nothing shall be done, nothing which may prejudice the civil and religious rights” of the Palestinian people.

“It’s significant for France and the U.K. to recognize Palestine because of the legacy of these two countries’ involvement in the Middle East,” said Burcu Ozcelik, senior research fellow for Middle East Security at London-based Royal United Services Institute. “But without the United States coming on board with the idea of a Palestine, I think very little will change on the ground.”

The Palestinian head of mission in the U.K. Husam Zomlot told the BBC that recognition would right a colonial-era wrong.

“The issue today is ending the denial of our existence that started 108 years ago, in 1917,” he said. “And I think today, the British people should celebrate a day when history is being corrected, when wrongs are being righted, when recognition of the wrongs of the past are beginning to be corrected.”

Change of tack

The U.K. has for decades supported an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel, but insisted recognition must come as part of a peace plan to achieve a two-state solution.

However, the government has become increasingly worried that such a solution is becoming all but impossible – not only because of the razing of Gaza and displacement of most of its population during nearly two years of conflict, but because Israel’s government is aggressively expanding settlements in the West Bank, land Palestinians want for their future state. Much of the world regards Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, which is ostensibly run by the Palestinian Authority, as illegal.

“This move has symbolic and historic weight, makes clear the U.K.’s concerns about the survival of a two-state solution, and is intended to keep that goal relevant and alive,” said Olivia O’Sullivan, Director of the U.K. in the World Programme at the London-based think tank, Chatham House.
