According to the Global Overview Digital Report 2023 by We Are Social, Thais spend an average of 2 hours and 44 minutes on social media daily. Additionally, the Thailand Cyber wellness Index (TCWI) indicates that over 85.16% lack digital skills, particularly in time management on screens.”

Furthermore, the research reveals that students aged 10-18 spend the most inappropriate screen time, with an 86.11% need for skill development. This age group, particularly between 13-15 years old, shows the lowest average scores, coinciding with the age when most students start having their own phones. Excessive screen time is found to impact daily life, including learning and working, with 23.59% experiencing such consequences and 56.58% almost constant screen use.

Digital literacy, especially in terms of screen time management, is identified as one of the essential components of the 4P Digital Intelligence Skills, fostering appropriate online media use. Recognizing these challenges, on this Safer Internet Day, we choose to communicate the perspective of online and social media usage that should be appropriately balanced.

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer and has begun treatment, Buckingham Palace said Monday. Less than 18 months into his reign, the 75-year-old monarch will suspend public engagements but will continue with state business, and won’t be handing over his constitutional roles as head of state.

The palace didn’t disclose what form of cancer the king has, but said it’s not related to his recent treatment for a benign prostate condition.

The palace said “a separate issue of concern was noted” during Charles’ treatment for an enlarged prostate last month, when he spent three nights in a London hospital.

“Diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” it said in a statement.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” the palace said. “Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”

The king is being treated as an outpatient, the palace said.

It said Charles, who has generally enjoyed good health, “remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.”

The palace added that the king “has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

Charles became king in September 2022 when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died at the age of 96 after 70 years on the throne.

News of the king’s diagnosis comes as his daughter-in-law Kate, Princess of Wales, recovers from abdominal surgery that saw her hospitalized for about two weeks.

Kate is still taking a break from royal duties as she recovers. Her husband, Prince William, who is heir to the throne, also took time off to help look after the couple’s three children, but is due to preside over an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle and a charity dinner on Wednesday.

Charles took the throne intending to preside over a slimmed-down monarchy with fewer senior royals carrying out ceremonial public duties. But with Charles and Kate both temporarily sidelined, Prince Harry self-exiled to California and Prince Andrew largely banished from view because of his friendship with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, the royal “Firm” risks becoming severely overstretched.

The king personally called both William and Harry — as well as his siblings Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward — to share news of his health.

Harry, who quit royal duties in 2020, has spoken to his father about the diagnosis and “will be traveling to U.K. to see His Majesty in the coming days,” said the office of Harry and his wife, Meghan.

U.K. political leaders sent messages of support. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted: “Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well.”

U.S. President Joe Biden, traveling in Las Vegas on Monday, said he had just learned about Charles’s diagnosis and said he hopes to speak with him, “God willing.”

“I’m concerned about him,” Biden told reporters.

The president later posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Navigating a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship takes hope and absolute courage. Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying that His Majesty experiences a swift and full recovery.”

Charles departed from royal tradition with his openness about his prostate condition. For centuries Britain’s royal family remained tight-lipped about health matters.

When U.K. monarchs had real power, news of illness was withheld for fear it might weaken their authority. The habit of secrecy lingered after royals became constitutional figureheads.

The British public wasn’t told that Charles’ grandfather, King George VI, had lung cancer before his death in February 1952 at the age of 56, and some historians have claimed that the king himself wasn’t told he was terminally ill.

In the final years of Elizabeth’s life. the public was told only that the queen was suffering from “mobility issues.” The cause of her death was listed on the death certificate simply as “old age.”

Pat Price, founder of the Catch Up With Cancer campaign, said millions shared the “collective concern” for the king’s health.

“The king’s openness about his battle with cancer is a powerful reminder that one in two of us may face cancer at some point in our lives,” Price said.

Ukraine-born Miss Japan Relinquishes Crown After Reported Affair

TOKYO – A Ukraine-born model with Japanese citizenship who won the 2024 Miss Japan beauty pageant has given up her title, competition organizers said Monday, in the wake of a weekly magazine report detailing her relationship with a married man.

Karolina Shiino, 26, was named the 2024 Miss Japan Grand Prix winner on Jan. 22. She was the first person of European descent to win the top prize in the contest organizers say is dedicated to crowning a representation of the “foremost beauty of all Japanese women.”

Born to Ukrainian parents, Shiino grew up in Nagoya, central Japan, after coming to the country at age 5.

Her Miss Japan victory had already been considered controversial due to her foreign roots, but she gave up the title following the Shukan Bunshun weekly magazine revelation on Thursday, which reported her relationship with a married influencer who is also a doctor.

In a statement on its website Monday, the Miss Japan Association said it has accepted her request to relinquish her title and “seriously reflects on our responsibility in bringing about the series of disturbances.”

The association also offered its “deep apologies” to concerned parties, including sponsors and judges, and said the competition’s top honor will remain vacant for the rest of the year.

Contest organizers had initially backed Shiino following the report, after she told her model agency Free Wave Co. that she had ended the relationship upon learning the man was married. But a new statement from the agency Monday said it had confirmed she continued to see him after learning his marital status.

In an apology posted to her Instagram, Shiino said she had been unable to tell the truth amid her confusion and fear after the article came out. “I am truly sorry for the huge trouble I have caused and for betraying those who supported me,” she wrote.

A naturalized Japanese citizen, Shiino has said her identity is that of a Japanese person. In a tearful acceptance speech upon winning, she said, “I had not been accepted as Japanese many times, but I am filled with gratitude to have been recognized as Japanese today.”

But her appointment ignited debate over what constitutes Japanese identity and led to polarized views on social media over whether her background made her an appropriate winner.

Eligible applicants must hold Japanese citizenship, be unmarried and be between 17 and 26 years old as of the end of their application year. In selecting its winners, the contest says it judges candidates based on their inner strength, looks and actions.

Shiino said in an interview with Kyodo News on Thursday before stepping down that she welcomes discussion over her selection and respects people who oppose her win on the basis that she does not match the image of Miss Japan.

“I don’t feel negative toward that way of thinking. Rather, I believe such views provide an opportunity for reflection,” she said.

Miss Japan was first held in 1950, though its current incarnation dates back to 1967. It is a domestic event that does not send its winner to represent Japan in international competitions.

Japanese beauty contests have previously been the subject of debate over identity including in 2015, when the Miss Universe Japan competition named Ariana Miyamoto, who was born to a Japanese mother and African-American father, as its first winner of mixed heritage.

PM Evaluates the Suvarnabhumi Issues With His Own Eyes

BANGKOK – Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin paid an unscheduled visit to Suvarnabhumi Airport on Monday morning, February 5, 2024, to evaluate the situation and examine the troubled immigration system.

Previously, the biometric system had failed twice, causing problems with the automated channels and rendering them unusable. This had a significant impact at times, with many arriving and departing flights, especially for departing passengers.

This was a good opportunity for him to gather first-hand information so he could make improvements and write a template.

 

The Prime Minister spent about one hour visiting the airport. He was received and briefed by Pol. Maj. Gen. Chengron Rimpadee, Commander of Immigration Division 2. The Prime Minister then returned to Government House to hold a meeting with all relevant parties involved in the matter. It has already been announced that the modernization of all airports in Thailand will be announced in early March.

“I do not just want to hear reports, I want to see it for myself. We have the opportunity to improve our services in many areas. Starting with the IT system, which is currently operated by several companies without any integration. This applies to both the backup system and the stability of the system. When the number of people increases, the system becomes slow. There is also a lack of immigration police officers,” said Srettha.

He added that during his inspection this morning he saw very long queues, from passport control to baggage x-ray and even when leaving the airport. There are two main problems: People overstaying their visas and people wanted for crimes and trying to leave the country. The IT system can link all this information together, so the systems need to be integrated.

The system crashing issue is needs to be fixed holistically. He personally believes that it will take about 12 months for the whole system to be complete and ready.

The inspection revealed that it normally takes about 45 seconds for a person to enter Suvarnabhumi Airport. However, when there are many people on all channels, the time increases to more than 1 minute per person, causing further delays. The number of tourists is now comparable to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, so all the parties need to find ways to manage the situation.

Srettha said the government has already set KPIs that the entire process, from queuing to stamping of passports, should not take more than 30 minutes. Passengers should be able to collect their luggage and leave immediately. The cab system that picks up passengers should also be improved. Everything is part of the overall plan.

The Prime Minister also said that he had the opportunity to see the rest rooms where officers take breaks during shift changes. He noted that the living conditions were not very good. He therefore ordered that improvements be made.

For departing passengers, the Prime Minister wants the process to take no longer than two  hours. Currently it can take up to 3 hours. If Thailand wants to promote tourism, the country must be considerate of tourists’ time. They should have the opportunity to spend their time sightseeing and spending money instead of wasting it at the airport. This is a good opportunity to improve Thai tourism.

According to Miss Sudawan Wangsuphakitkoson, Minister of Tourism and Sports, foreign tourists visiting Thailand during the first month of 2024 (January 1-31) were 3,035,296 people, a 42% increase from the same month in 2023. There was 147,922 million baht in total revenue from foreign visitors.

The top five countries with the most foreign tourists entering Thailand are China (508,563), Malaysia (321,704), South Korea (222,571), Russia (219,167), and India (162,831).

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has set a target for the Thai tourism sector to generate 3.5 trillion baht in total tourism income by 2024, with 2.3 trillion baht coming from foreign markets from the target number of 35 million foreign tourists and 1.2 trillion baht coming from the domestic market from the target number of 205 million Thai tourists.

Former Miss Universe Talks About Being a Single Mother

BANGKOK – The Russian-Canadian beauty Natalie Glebova, Miss Universe 2005, has been living in Thailand for over 20 years since she won the Miss Universe crown there. She recently spoke about her life as a single mother for the first time in an interview on the WOODY FM show with Woody Milintachinda, a famous Thai host.

Natalie said that she never thought her marriage to Dean Kelly, a businessman, would end this way.

“He was the person I would grow old with and spend the rest of my life with, but not everyone is that lucky, so it’s a bit difficult to talk about,” she said.

Miss Universe 2005 was previously married to Paradorn Srichaphan, a former top Thai tennis player, and divorced. She said it was different this time because she had a child.

“As you know, I’ve been through a marriage before, and I’ve been divorced before, but I’ve never had a child. This is a very different and new life, and I can handle my emotions to a certain extent better than before because I’m older and more mature now. I have learned to be responsible for another life, which is very valuable. It’s not easy, so I’m really focusing on making sure my daughter isn’t affected by it, or as little as possible.”

Natalie said that this is a sensitive topic, especially when she sees her daughter having to face the separation of her parents. Natalie said that her daughter doesn’t deserve any pain and that is the hardest part for her.

“I want her to have a stable idea of what family is, what marriage is, what love is, but unfortunately I feel like I can’t give her that because her father and I are separated and divorced. And even though I think we can give her that at some point, it’s hard, it’s not easy. I can tell you my whole idea of love and relationships…”

The beauty queen, nicknamed “Fah” in Thai for her blue eyes, said she is currently writing a book about love and life.

“If you can first build a temple of love within yourself, embrace yourself and love completely, you can do it without conditions. Whether you are together or not. I feel like in this case I’m still trying to build a temple of love 50 percent of the time. The rest has to come from someone else.”

Natalie also said that she will continue to live in Thailand, which she feels is her home since she came to compete in Miss Universe.

“I don’t think it will be Russia. I don’t think it will be Canada. Maybe it will be Thailand because I love it here. Thailand has changed me in many ways in a positive way. The place I want to die will probably be Thailand. I would be happy to spend the rest of my life here and die here.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Taylor Swift won album of the year at the Grammy Awards for “Midnights,” breaking the record for most wins in the category with four.

She began her speech by thanking her producer and friend Jack Antonoff and added, “I would love to tell you this is the happiest moment of my life,” she told the crowd, but said she feels this happy when she creates music and plays shows.

Earlier in the night, Taylor Swift used her 13th Grammy win on Sunday to announce her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” will arrive April 19.

“I know that the way that the Recording Academy voted is a direct reflection of the passion of the fans,” she said while accepting the best pop vocal album award. “So, I want to say thank you to the fans by telling you a secret that I’ve been keeping from you for the last two years.”

One of the night’s biggest awards, record of the year, went to Miley Cyrus for “Flowers,” her second-ever Grammy and second of the night.

“This award is amazing. But I really hope that it doesn’t change anything because my life was beautiful yesterday,” she said in her speech.

Victoria Monét won best new artist. “Thank you to the champagne-servers tonight,” Monét began her acceptance speech. “Thanks to my mom, a single mom raising this really bad girl.” Then she started to cry, telling the room that this award was “15 years in the making.”

Billie Eilish won song of the year for writing the “Barbie” hit, “What Was I Made For?” She thanked director Greta Gerwig for “making the best movie of the year.”

It was just one of several standout moments from Sunday’s show, hosted by Trevor Noah and broadcast live from Cypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles.

Karol G made Grammy history Sunday by becoming the first female performer to win best música urbana album for her blockbuster “Mañana Será Bonito” record.

“This is my first time at the Grammys,” she told the audience in English. “And this is my first time holding my own Grammy.”

Performances were many. Olivia Rodrigo brought her bloodsucking ballad “vampire” – or in this case, bloodletting, as red liquid dripped from the walls behind her. Joni Mitchell, 80, made Grammy history by performing “Both Sides Now” from her 1969 album “Clouds”; Travis Scott did a medley of “My Eyes,” “I Know?,” and “Fein.” Burna Boy was joined by Brandy and 21 Savage and did “On Form,” “City Boys,” and “Sittin’ on Top of the World.”

A long and touching In Memoriam segment celebrated many of the musical greats lost last year. Stevie Wonder performed “For Once in My Life” and “The Best Is Yet To Come” in honor of Tony Bennett; Annie Lennox delivered “Nothing Compares 2 U” for Sinéad O’Connor. “Artists for ceasefire, peace in the world,” Lennox said at the end of the song, her fist extended in the air.

Jon Batiste did a medley of “Ain’t No Sunshine,” “Lean On Me,” and finally “Optimistic” with Ann Nesby for the late great music exec Clarence Avant. Oprah introduced a fiery Tina Turner tribute of “Proud Mary” by Fantasia Barrino and Adam Blackstone.

SZA also took the stage – performing a medley of her larger-than-life hits “Snooze” and “Kill Bill,” joined by dancers wielding katanas. Later, she’d take home the trophy for best R&B song — for “Snooze,” handed to her by Lizzo. SZA ran to the stage and gave a charming, out of breath speech because she was “changing, and then I took a shot.”

Luke Combs’ delivered a heartfelt rendition of “Fast Car” with Tracy Chapman – his cover of the Chapman classic has dominated country radio and won him song of the year at the 2023 CMAs. In 1989 the song won Chapman best female pop vocal performance.

Dua Lipa opened the show with a high-octane medley: first, a tease of her forthcoming single, “Training Season,” then, her most recent single, “Houdini,” and finally, her disco-pop “Barbie” hit “Dance the Night.”

Eilish and Finneas also brought “Barbie” to the Grammys stage with live string accompaniment. They were followed by Cyrus, who performed “Flowers” for the first time live on television.

“Why are you acting like you don’t know this song?” she teased the crowd — John Legend and wife Chrissy Teigen were among those in the audience who got up to dance — and later cheered mid-song, “I just won my first Grammy!”

Best country album went to Lainey Wilson for “Bell Bottom Country,” — her very first Grammy — as presented by Kacey Musgraves. “I’m a fifth-generation farmer’s daughter,” she told the crowd, adding that she’s a “songwriting farmer,” and that’s where the musical magic came from.

Jay-Z was awarded the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award and used his speech to talk about the hip-hop greats that came before him – and heavily suggesting at the Grammys history of placing rap on the backburner – or at the very least, not in the televised version of the show. (This year, there were no rap categories on the telecast, but two pop, one Latin, one country and one R&B.)

“We want you all to get it right,” he said. “At least get it close to right,” before switching focus to Beyoncé. “Most Grammys, never won album of the year. How does that work?”

Bridgers took an early lead at the Grammys, quickly winning four trophies ahead of the main telecast, with her and her boygenius bandmates bringing an infectious energy to the pre-telecast Premiere Ceremony.

Jack Antonoff took home producer of the year, non-classical for a third year in a row, tying Babyface as the only other producer to do so consecutively. “You need the door kicked open for you,” he said in his acceptance speech. “Taylor Swift kicked that (expletive) door open for me,” he said.

The first of three new categories in 2024, best pop dance recording, went to Kylie Minogue for “Padam Padam” — her first win in 18 years.

About 80 Grammys were handed out pre-broadcast. Regional Mexican star Peso Pluma won his first Grammy for his first and only nomination, for best música Mexicana album for his “Genesis.”

Best African music performance, a new category which aims to highlight regional musical traditions and recognizing “recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent,” went to South African singer Tyla for her ubiquitous hit, “Water.”

“I never thought I’d say I won a Grammy at 21 years old,” she said in her acceptance speech. “Last year God decided to change my whole life.”

Killer Mike won three awards in quick succession Sunday night, but ended up in police custody before the main Grammys ceremony began because of an altercation, police spokesperson Officer Mike Lopez said.

The rapper won his first first Grammy in 21 years, for best rap performance for “Scientists & Engineers,” which featured André 3000, Future and Eryn Allen Kane. Soon afterward, they won for “best rap song.” Killer Mike also took home best rap album for “Michael,” cheering, “It is a sweep! It is a sweep!”

Billy Joel was both the penultimate and final performance of the night. First, he brought his new track “Turn the Lights Back on” — his first new music in decades — live to the Grammy stage. Then, after album of the year was announced, he returned to the stage for his 1980 classic, “You May Be Right.”

A welcome surprised was the inclusion of Celine Dion, who handed Swift her record-breaking trophy. “When I say I’m happy to be here, I really mean it from my heart,” she told the audience. In 2022, Dion revealed she was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called stiff person syndrome, which causes spasms that affect her ability to walk and sing.

Following nearly 15 years with Amouage, the renowned Omani global fragrance brand, Mr. Crickmore made the strategic decision to return to London amidst the onset of the pandemic. This move facilitated his appointment as the CEO of THAMEEN London. 

Positioned at the cusp of the brand’s expansion into the burgeoning Asian market, particularly in Thailand, Mr. Crickmore highlighted the region’s burgeoning middle class, characterized by robust purchasing power and a burgeoning appetite for luxury goods.

“We initiated our foray into Asia, commencing with key markets such as Jakarta, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Taiwan,” Mr. Crickmore revealed. “In particular, Indonesia stands out due to its rapidly growing economy and the increasing purchasing power of its populace.”

Reflecting on his extensive experience in the high fashion and luxury sectors, Mr. Crickmore underscored the evolving landscape of the Thai market.

“Thailand has witnessed a remarkable transformation over the decades.
