A Female Passenger Loses Her Leg in Shocking Accident at Don Mueang Airport

A serious accident occurred at Don Mueang Airport, Bangkok, about 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, June 29. A 57-year-old female passenger who was supposed to board a flight to Nakhon Srithammarat province lost her lower left leg above the knee after a suitcase hit her, causing her to fall and be pulled into a moving walkway.

The incident took place on the South Corridor between Pier 4 and Pier 5, Domestic Terminal 2. She was rushed to the Bhumibol hospital.

donmeung3

Karan Tanakuljirapat, director of the Don Mueang Airport said at a press conference that the moving walkway was made in Japan by a reputable firm and used by many other airports abroad and Airport staff check the moving walkway every three hours. After the incident, engineers have been deployed to investigate.

Karan said the moving walkway that crushed a passenger’s leg has been in service since 1996 and is due to be replaced in 2025. But when this happened, it may have to be moved to an urgent budget in 2024.

He has now ordered the temporary suspension of all 20 moving walkways to ensure their safety. And more investigation is needed to determine the cause of the incident, such as whether the wheel of the injured person’s baggage hit until the moving walkway spokes broke strongly or not, or whether the system was interrupted before the incident.

Karan also stated that the moving walkway was under the care and maintenance of Siam Hitachi Elevator Co., Ltd., a company in the Siam Motors Group and a representative of Hitachi of Japan. To determine if it can sue the corporation for damages, it must examine the terms of the trading deal.

Engineers have been deployed to investigate.

For the female passenger, the medical team at the Bhumibol hospital informed Karan that they could not reattach her leg, but the woman requested to be transferred to Bumrungrad Hospital, which is a private hospital, to assess the possibility.

Initially, the airport will be fully responsible for the woman’s medical costs and will be open for negotiations on other compensations.

“On behalf of Don Mueang International Airport, please accept my heartfelt condolences regarding the accident.” “I would like to emphasise that we will make certain that such an accident does not occur again,” Karan stated.

Back in 2019, a passenger narrowly escaped having his foot crushed after a partially broken skirt of a moving walkway sucked his slipper but he managed to let loose his foot just in time.

A Couple Is To Be Deported to Taiwan for a $112 Million Fraud Case

Taiwanese media outlets reported that a Taiwanese couple had been apprehended by Thai immigration officers upon their entry into Thailand. The couple had been on the run for over two decades after orchestrating a fraudulent scheme that defrauded victims in Taiwan of more than THB 4 billion, approximately USD 112 million.

Thai police said on June 29 that they are still waiting to hand over this couple to Taiwanese authorities for further legal action.

The Thai Immigration Department’s investigative team received a tip from the Office of Economic and Cultural Affairs in Taipei, Taiwan, which led to the successful arrest of the couple. It turned out that Chen, Chih-Tsan, 64, and Liu, Mei-Hsueh, 57, along with 12 accomplices, enticed individuals to invest in exchange for high returns, resulting in significant losses for victims in Taiwan. Other suspects have already been arrested.

The couple had established a company named Lien-chin-wen, claiming it to be a subsidiary of the renowned global financial institution, Richmond. The scam garnered significant attention in Taiwan, with numerous individuals expressing interest in investing, particularly due to the false association with Richmond. The total accumulated losses amounted to THB 4 billion.

The couple later closed the business and have avoided Taiwan for the past 20 years. They adopted new identities by traveling to Belize, a small coastal state in North America. They managed to obtain Belizean citizenship and passports, changed their names and settled there through investments.

In 2018, they entered Thailand with their Belizean passports and then applied to change their visa type to a Privilege Entry (PE) visa by becoming members of the Thailand Privilege Card program. They hid in a luxury condominium in the Bang Na area.

Thai police later discovered that the fugitive couple were the same people wanted by Taiwanese authorities, which led to the cancellation of their visas. When they learned of the visa cancellation, they booked airline tickets and prepared to travel to Singapore. However, they were arrested by the police in the parking lot of the apartment block.

After the arrest, investigators from the Thai Special Investigations Division and the head of the International Crime Coordination Division of the Taiwan National Police Agency conducted further interrogations into her financial transactions and other assets, including links to the nominee network in Thailand.

Preliminary investigations revealed valuable real estate, including a luxury condominium worth 15 million baht, and about 2 million baht in cash in bank accounts.

2,700 People Tricked Into Working For Cybercrime Syndicates Rescued In Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Philippine police backed by commandos staged a massive raid on Tuesday and said they rescued more than 2,700 workers from China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and more than a dozen other countries who were allegedly swindled into working for fraudulent online gaming sites and other cybercrime groups.

The number of human trafficking victims rescued from seven buildings in Las Pinas city in metropolitan Manila and the scale of the nighttime police raid were the largest so far this year and indicated how the Philippines has become a key base of operations for cybercrime syndicates.

Cybercrime scams have become a major issue in Asia with reports of people from the region and beyond being lured into taking jobs in countries like strife-torn Myanmar and Cambodia. However, many of these workers find themselves trapped in virtual slavery and forced to participate in scams targeting people over the internet.

In May, leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations agreed in a summit in Indonesia to tighten border controls and law enforcement and broaden public education to fight criminal syndicates that traffic workers to other nations, where they are made to participate in online fraud.

Brig. Gen. Sydney Hernia, who heads the national Philippine police’s anti-cybercrime unit, said police armed with warrants raided and searched the buildings around midnight in Las Pinas and rescued 1,534 Filipinos and 1,190 foreigners from at least 17 countries, including 604 Chinese, 183 Vietnamese, 137 Indonesians, 134 Malaysians and 81 Thais. There were also a few people from Myanmar, Pakistan, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan, Nigeria and Taiwan.

It was not immediately clear how many suspected leaders of the syndicate were arrested.

Police raided another suspected cybercrime base at the Clark freeport in Mabalacat city in Pampanga province north of Manila in May where they took custody of nearly 1,400 Filipino and foreign workers who were allegedly forced to carry out cryptocurrency scams, police said.

Some of the workers told investigators that when they tried to quit they were forced to pay a hefty amount for unclear reasons or they feared they would be sold to other syndicates, police said, adding that workers were also forced to pay fines for perceived infractions at work.

Workers were lured with high salary offers and ideal working conditions in Facebook advertisements but later found out the promises were a ruse, officials said.

Indonesian Minister Muhammad Mahfud, who deals with political, legal and security issues, told reporters in May that Indonesia and other countries in the region have found it difficult to work with Myanmar on cybercrime and its victims.

He said ASEAN needs to make progress on a long-proposed regional extradition treaty that would help authorities prosecute offenders more rapidly and prevent a further escalation in cybercrime.

Cyber Police Arrest Nigeria-Cote D’Ivoire Romance Scammers

Thai police from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau surrounded and investigated four areas in Bangkok on June 28, 2023, that are considered centres of love scammers, which cause damage worth over 300 million baht. One of the targeted locations is room number C407, 4th floor of JR Mansion, in Soi On Nut 25, Suang Luang district, Bangkok.

Police arrested Embema Phopana, 30, who is from the Cote d’Ivoire, on charges of committing a fraud offense by impersonating someone else, dishonestly or deceptively entering false or forged computer data into a computer system, and money laundering.

Investigations have revealed that Phopana entered Thailand on a student visa indicating a college in the northeastern region. Police are now working with immigration and the college to determine if he was studying or working illegally.

At other targeted locations, police arrested 2 more accomplices: Mr. Bright Chisom Nmerem, 30, from Nigeria, in a condominium at 39 Soi PhetKasem, and Ms. Angkana Kahn, 33, a Thai woman, in Rama 3.

The Romance Scammer lures victims into love and then asks them to transfer money. This is a systematic scam that involves several people. There are people who are responsible for creating fake profile accounts, fake bank accounts, fake electronic cards or sim cards that allow the scammers to receive or transfer money from the victims. There are also people who are responsible for falsifying the money transaction.

Lisa from BlackPink, Lalisa Manobal, Thai K-pop superstar, once again puts a spotlight on every item she touches after posting a picture of a mango salad with the caption, “Mango salad straight from Thailand”.

At a papaya salad store located across the street from the Phimai branch of Bangkok Bank in Phimai district, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, the vendor told a reporter that papaya salad has become popular after Lisa posted the mango salad.

Sri Sukjai, 45, the owner of the papaya salad store, had to prepare more ingredients immediately after Lisa posted the mango salad, because whatever Lisa touches quickly becomes famous. She said that customers are now ordering more mango salad, which has led to the significant increase in sales.

She stressed that the store will prepare all the ingredients to meet the demand of customers, and that the store will continue to sell at the same price, which is 40 baht per dish. She added that today, when a customer orders the mango salad, she asks if they want the original recipe or Lisa’s, and most customers choose Lisa’s.

Actor Julian Sands Died While Hiking on California Mountain, Authorities Confirm

By ANDREW DALTON in LOS ANGELES — Actor Julian Sands, who starred in several Oscar-nominated films in the late 1980s and ’90s including “A Room With a View” and “Leaving Las Vegas,” was found dead on a Southern California mountain five months after he disappeared while hiking, authorities said Tuesday.

An investigation confirmed that it was Sands whose remains hikers found Saturday in wilderness near Mount Baldy, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said. The 65-year-old actor was an avid and experienced hiker who lived in Los Angeles and was reported missing Jan. 13 after setting out on the peak that rises more than 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) east of the city. Crews aided by drones and helicopters had searched for him several times, but, severely hampered by wintry conditions that lasted through spring, no sign of him was found until the civilian hikers came upon him.

The chances of Sands being discovered alive had long since diminished to nearly nothing, but the Sheriff’s Department, which conducted an official search the day before he was found, emphasized that the case remained active.

An autopsy has been conducted, but further test results are needed before the cause of death can be determined, authorities said.

Sands, who was born, raised and began acting in England, worked constantly in film and television, amassing more than 150 credits in a 40-year career. During a 10-year span from 1985 to 1995, he played major roles in a series of acclaimed films.

After studying at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, Sands embarked on a career in stage and film, playing small parts in films including “Oxford Blues” and “The Killing Fields.” He landed the starring role of George Emerson, who falls in love with Helena Bonham Carter’s Lucy Honeychurch while on holiday in Tuscany, in the 1985 British romance, “A Room With a View.”

The film from director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant won the British Academy of Film and Television Arts award for best film, and was nominated for eight Oscars, winning three.

In the wake of its success, Sands moved to the United States to pursue a career in Hollywood.

He played the title role in the 1989 horror fantasy “Warlock” and its sequel. In the 1990 horror comedy “Arachnophobia,” with Jeff Daniels and John Goodman, Sands played an entomologist specializing in spiders.

The following year he appeared in director David Cronenberg’s surreal adaptation of the William Burroughs novel “Naked Lunch” in 1991.

In 1993, Sands starred in the thriller “Boxing Helena,” a movie that drew major media attention during production when Madonna and Kim Basinger each accepted the title role before backing out. The part would go to “Twin Peaks” actor Sherilyn Fenn. The film flopped.

Author Anne Rice championed Sands to play the titular Lestat in the much-hyped 1994 Hollywood adaptation of her novel “Interview With the Vampire,” but the role would go to Tom Cruise.

In 1995’s “Leaving Las Vegas,” Sands played an abusive Latvian pimp alongside Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue. The film was nominated for four Oscars, with Cage winning best actor.

Sands touted his love of the outdoors in a 2020 interview with the Guardian, saying he was happiest when “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning” and that his biggest dream was scaling “a remote peak in the high Himalayas, such as Makalu.”

The actor said in the interview that in the early 1990s, he was caught in an “atrocious” storm in the Andes and was lucky to survive when three others near his party didn’t.

After “Leaving Las Vegas,” the quality of the films Sands was cast in, and the size of his roles, began declining. He worked steadily, appearing in director Wim Wenders’ “The Million Dollar Hotel” and director Dario Argento’s “The Phantom of the Opera.”

He also appeared as a guest star or in recurring roles on TV series including “24,” “Medici,” “Smallville,” “Dexter,” “Gotham” and “Elementary.” His final film was 2022’s “The Ghosts of Monday.”

Sands was born in Yorkshire, the middle child of five brothers raised by a single mother. He had three children of his own.

He had been married since 1990 to journalist Evgenia Citkowitz, with whom he had two adult daughters, Imogen Morley Sands and Natalya Morley Sands. His eldest child was son Henry Sands, whom he had with his first wife, journalist Sarah Harvey.

A few days before he was found, Sands’ family issued a statement saying, “We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer.”

Thai Court Acquits 5 Who Were Accused of Blocking the Queen’s Motorcade During 2020 Protests

By JINTAMAS SAKSORNCHAI — A court in Thailand on Wednesday acquitted a student activist and four other people of impeding the motorcade of the country’s queen during pro-democracy demonstrations in 2020, an offense that could have seen them sentenced to 16 years in prison or even the death penalty.

The Bangkok Criminal Court verdict was rendered in a case brought under a little-used law that targets actions intended “to harm the liberty of the queen, the heir apparent and the regent.” Legal experts were unable to recall any previous prosecutions under the law.

The verdict represented a rare legal victory for Thailand’s pro-democracy movement, which has often faced an uphill battle in the conservative courts, which are widely seen as representing a bulwark against political and social change.

After the verdict was read, people in the courtroom clapped and cheered, as the smiling defendants hugged each other, and the judge had to call for order.

The defendants thanked the court, with one, Ekachai Hongkangwan, saying he always had confidence the courts would be just, and that the judges showed that people can still rely on the justice system.

The case stemmed from an incident on October 14, 2020, on the fringes of a rally in Bangkok that was calling for democratic reforms, including over the privileges of the country’s powerful monarchy.

One of the defendants, 23-year-old international relations student Bunkueanun Paothong — widely known by his nickname Francis — had insisted all along the case was misguided.

He had denied knowing a royal motorcade was due to pass by, and said that when he saw it he urged people to move away.

Prosecutors had alleged that he knew the royal motorcade, with a limousine carrying Queen Suthida, wife of King Maha Vajiralongkorn, and his son, Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, then 15, was due to pass the area and that he and his fellow defendants had broken away to block its route.

They also charged that they tussled with police officers who were securing the path, then urged other protestors to sit in the road to stop its passage.

The court ruled that an examination of the evidence showed there was no clear announcement to the public that there would be a motorcade in the area and that the defendants were likely unable to see the motorcade approaching because there were layers of police surrounding the cars.

It said police officers at the scene told the protesters to make way for a royal motorcade and didn’t say it was the queen’s. The protesters briefly blocked the way because they mistakenly believed the police were trying to disperse their rally, but they quickly backed off once they realized the motorcade was there, the court said.

The court concluded the incident was likely caused by miscommunication, not an intentional attempt to impede the motorcade.

The court acquitted the five on all charges, even a minor one of blocking traffic, an offense often brought against those arrested for involvement in street protests.

The royal family is traditionally revered in Thailand. Its sacrosanct status is backed by harsh defamation laws. But ever since the ascension of King Vajiralongkorn in 2016, there’s been growing disquiet over the extent of this privileged position.

Beginning in 2020, large-scale protests challenged the status quo. In unprecedented scenes, tens of thousands gathered, again and again, to demand a list of changes. A combination of the pandemic and the arrest of protest leaders tamped down the dissent but it didn’t go away.

Lawyer Poonsuk Poonsukcharoen from Thai Lawyers for Human Rights said after the court session concluded that she was happy the five defendants, who always insisted on their innocence, received justice, and that the case was handled in a straightforward way strictly based on evidence that was presented.

MFP Postpones The House Speaker’s Conclusion Meeting With Pheu Thai

The Move Forward Party (MFP) announced late Tuesday night that it had postponed the meeting with the Pheu Thai Party over the House Speaker’s conclusion on Wednesday indefinitely.

The postponement came after the MFP nominated second-term MP Padipat Santipada as the new House Speaker, and Pheu Thai stated that the House Speaker should come from the Pheu Thai Party, which has a number of MPs in second place, only 10 seats behind the MFP.

The Pheu Thai representatives intended to insist on the quota of 14 ministers plus 1 prime minister for Move Forward and 14 ministers plus 1 Speaker of the House of Representatives for Pheu Thai. They announced that the selection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives must be based on knowledge, competence, experience, fairness, and equality.

PThai speaker

Padipat, 41, was elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in 2019 as a Pitsanuloke province MP, defeating Warong Dechkitvigrom. He entered politics after he witnessed social and economic disparities, particularly under the military junta.

Padipat remarked on his vision as the House Speaker candidate that the Thai parliament should not be the same. Efficiency, transparency, and people must all be part of the mission.

MFP speaker
Padipat Santipada showed his vision as a House Speaker candidate.

Although the two pro-democracy parties have agreed to put forward Pita Limcharoenrat, leader of the MFP, as Prime Minister, two parties have been at odds over the position of Speaker of the House since the beginning of coalition negotiations.

The deadlock continues as the selection date for the next speaker is slated for July 4.
