‘Anatomy of a Fall’ Wins Top Prize at Cannes Film Festival

Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” won the Palme d’Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in a ceremony Saturday that bestowed the festival’s prestigious top prize on an engrossing, rigorously plotted French courtroom drama that puts a marriage on trial.

“Anatomy of a Fall,” which stars Sandra Hüller as a writer trying to prove her innocence in her husband’s death, is only the third film directed by a woman to win the Palme d’Or. One of the two previous winners, Julia Ducournau, was on this year’s jury.

Cannes’ Grand Prix, its second prize, went to Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest,” a chilling Martin Amis adaptation about a German family living next door to Auschwitz. Hüller also stars in that film.

The awards were decided by a jury presided over by two-time Palme winner Ruben Östlund, the Swedish director who won the prize last year for “Triangle of Sadness.” The ceremony preceded the festival’s closing night film, the Pixar animation “Elemental.”

Remarkably, the award for “Anatomy of a Fall” gives the indie distributor Neon its fourth straight Palme winners. Neon, which acquired the film after its premiere in Cannes, also backed “Triangle of Sadness,”Ducournau’s “Titane” and Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite,” which it steered to a best picture win at the Academy Awards.

Triet was presented the Palme by Jane Fonda, who recalled coming to Cannes in 1963 when, she said, there were no female filmmakers competing “and it never even occurred to us that there was something wrong with that.” This year, a record seven out of the 21 films in competition at Cannes were directed by women.

After a rousing standing ovation, Triet, the 44-year-old French filmmaker, spoke passionately about the protests that have roiled France this year over reforms to pension plans and the retirement age. Several protests were held during Cannes this year, but demonstrations were — as they have been in many high-profile locations throughout France — banned from the area around the Palais des Festivals. Protesters were largely relegated to the outskirts of Cannes.

“The protests were denied and repressed in a shocking way,” said Triet, who linked that governmental influence to that in cinema. “The merchandizing of culture, defended by a liberal government, is breaking the French cultural exception.”

“This award is dedicated to all the young women directors and all the young male directors and all those who cannot manage to shoot films today,” she added. “We must give them the space I occupied 15 years ago in a less hostile world where it was still possible to make mistakes and start again.”

The jury prize went to Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s “Fallen Leaves,” a deadpan love story about a romance that blooms in a loveless workaday world where dispatches from the war in Ukraine regularly play on the radio.

Best actor went to veteran Japanese star Koji Yakusho, who plays a reflective, middle-aged Tokyo man who cleans toilets in Wim Wenders’ “Perfect Days,” a gentle, quotidian character study.

The Turkish actor Merve Dizdar took best actress for the Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “About Dry Grasses.” Ceylan’s expansive tale is set in snowy eastern Anatolia about a teacher, Samet (Deniz Celiloğlu), accused of misconduct by a young female student. Dizdar plays a friend both attracted and repelled by Samet.

“I understand what it’s like to be a woman in this area of the country,” said Dizdar. “I would like to dedicate this prize to all the women who are fighting to exist and overcome difficulties in this world and to retrain hope.”

Vietnamese-French director Tràn Anh Hùng took best director for “Pot-au-Feu,” a lush, foodie love story starring Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel and set in a 19th century French gourmet château.

Best screenplay was won by Yuji Sakamoto for “Monster.” Sakamoto penned Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda’s nuanced drama, with shifting perspectives, about two boys struggling for acceptance in their school at home. “Monster” also won the Queer Palm, an honor bestowed by journalists for the festival’s strongest LGBTQ-themed film.

Quentin Tarantino, who won Cannes’ top award for “Pulp Fiction,” attended the ceremony to present a tribute to filmmaker Roger Corman. Tarantino praised Corman for filling him and countless moviegoers with “unadulterated cinema pleasure.”

“My cinema is uninhibited, full of excess and fun,” said Corman, the independent film maverick. “I feel like this what Cannes is about.”

The festival’s Un Certain Regard section handed out its awards on Friday, giving the top prize to Molly Manning Walker’s debut feature, “How to Have Sex.”

Saturday’s ceremony drew to close a Cannes edition that hasn’t lacked spectacle, stars or controversy.

The biggest wattage premieres came out of competition. Martin Scorsese debuted his Osage murders epic “Killers of the Flower Moon,” a sprawling vision of American exploitation with Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone. “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” Harrison Ford’s Indy farewell, launched with a tribute to Ford. Wes Anderson premiered “Asteroid City.”

The festival opened on a note of controversy. “Jeanne du Barry,” a period drama co-starring Johnny Depp as Louis XV, played as the opening night film. The premiere marked Depp’s highest profile appearance since the conclusion of his explosive trial last year with ex-wife Amber Heard.

BERLIN (AP) — Jamal Musiala scored in the 89th minute to fire Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title with a 2-1 victory in Cologne after Borussia Dortmund could only draw on the final day of the season.

Dortmund, which was leading by two points before the last round, was held 2-2 at home by Mainz on Saturday, allowing Bayern to finish in first place because of its better goal difference.

Dortmund needed to win to be sure of ending Bayern’s 10-year reign as champion.

It’s just the third time Bayern managed to jump to first place on the last day of the season after it edged Werder Bremen to the title in 1986 and Bayer Leverkusen in 2000.

Dortmund fans were celebrating when Cologne’s Dejan Ljubicic scored a penalty in the 81st minute against Bayern – which needed to win – but Musiala came on as a substitute four minutes later and scored four minutes after that to send the title Bayern’s way.

Dortmund had started in pole position, but Sébastien Haller had a first-half penalty saved after Andreas Hanche-Olsen stunned the home fans by heading in Mainz’s opening goal in the 15th minute.

Karim Onisiwo then got Mainz’s second goal in the 24th with another header and the visitors looked capable of scoring more against the mistake-prone Dortmund defense. There was nothing but pride at stake for Mainz.

Raphaël Guerreiro pulled one back in the 69th for Dortmund, but by the time Niklas Süle equalized in the sixth minute of injury time, it was far too late for the “black and yellows.”

Rani Khedira fired Union Berlin into the Champions League with a late winner over Werder Bremen for 1-0. Union finished fourth, ahead of Freiburg, which lost 2-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt.

Schalke was relegated after a 4-2 loss at Leipzig, and Stuttgart will contest the relegation/promotion playoff against the team that finishes third in the second division. Stuttgart drew with Hoffenheim 1-1.

Bochum secured survival with a 3-0 win over 10-man Bayer Leverkusen.

Srettha Thavisin Reveals Lessons Learned from First Defeat: How Will Pheu Thai Fix It?

The political entry of prominent businessman Srettha Thavisin, who was expected to become the 30th prime minister in the 2023 general election as a candidate of the Pheu Thai party, alongside Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, deviated from the original predictions.

The Pheu Thai Party, formerly known as “Thai Rak Thai” before being renamed the People Power Party (Palang Prachachon), was a dominant political force for several election cycles since 2001. However, it suffered its first defeat in the 2023 elections and failed to come out on top.

srettha prachachat3

This result was influenced by the emergence of the “Pita Mania” and “Dom Som” (Orange supporters) movements, which represented the voices of the new generation. These movements resulted in another party with a larger number of parliamentary seats than Pheu Thai taking first place, surpassing it by 10 seats.

Srettha spoke out for the first time about the lessons he learned this year during his foray into politics. He shared his insights during a seminar “Journey to Transform” organised by the Prachachat Business, Matichon Media Group on 24 May, just before he left for a holiday abroad to recuperate before returning to major political engagements. As a member of the Pheu Thai Party, he wants to contribute to the party’s efforts to rebrand itself.

Srettha explained that he had learnt the art of communicating with the media and recognized himself as straightforward, unlike seasoned politicians who often play with words when they respond. On his first day in the Pheu Thai Party, he candidly stated that he would only accept the post of prime minister in this election and no other. This direct statement provoked strong reactions. Many accused him of being ambitious and opportunistic, especially considering that he had only recently entered politics.

srettha prachachat2

“The younger generation values clarity, and I assure you that my answers that day were correct. In summary, I have gained more experience in politics in the last 2-3 months,” Srettha said.

He mentioned that he has been a businessman for over 30 years. At present, all three of his children are successful in their education and professional life. However, he has seen difficulties in his country for the last 8-9 years. When he realized that he himself had reached a satisfactory status and did not need more, he realised that his true happiness lies in seeing others having a home and witnessing social growth under good management.

He believes that Thailand needs change and needs people with new perspectives.

During the interview, when asked about which politician, after being in the political arena for 2-3 months, garnered the highest level of respect and admiration, Srettha mentioned Nuttawut Saikua. He described Nattawut as an individual with extensive knowledge and a deep understanding of Thai politics. Srettha explained that it was Nattawut who enlightened him as to why he should enter the political arena, and so he did.

The most memorable experience for Srettha was the opportunity to interact with the public, especially during his visit to the Taxi Co-op, where he gained insights into the problems faced by taxi drivers and their underlying frustrations. He also noted that technological progress in Thailand lags significantly behind. He emphasised that transformative reforms are needed in these areas to promote development. Having experienced these problems first-hand, he was eager to help and contribute to the solution.

srettha prachachat4

As for the future of the Pheu Thai Party after its defeat by the Move Forward Party, Srettha expressed his concerns. He mentioned that the biggest challenge is to develop a strategy for the next four years. He has started to realise the need for adjustments and structural adjustments. He stressed that such adjustments are not only limited to the economic aspect. It is widely known that the Pheu Thai Party has demonstrated its ability in dealing with economic matters. However, the crucial aspect lies in the ability to bring about structural changes.

In a clear statement during an interview with CNN, Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the Move Forward Party, expressed his sincere appreciation for three important aspects: securing the country’s independence from the military, resolving monopoly issues and decentralizing power. These statements were met with enthusiastic applause and showed that certain things go beyond purely financial interests.

“Pheu Thai is a full-fledged party whose management methods resemble those of large companies. However, the results of the 14 May elections have shown that we may only get 100 seats or even less in the next elections if we do not change. This is because there are significant changes and other parties are taking different approaches,” Srettha said.

Pita To Push Thailand’s Minimum Wage to 450 Baht

Another controversial issue during the formation of the government came as the Move Forward Party (MFP) was pushing for a minimum wage of 450 baht (13 U.S. dollars) per day.

Pita Limjaroenrat, Leader of the Move Forward Party, met with a network of workers from 45 organisations and over 200 people on Friday, May 26, at the Bang Sao Thong municipal office in Samut Prakan Province to discuss the MFP’s labour policy.

The network of workers participating in the discussion included trade unions from a variety of industries, including automotive, steel, food and pharmaceuticals, electricity and electronics, textiles, publishing, packaging, plastics, state enterprises, informal workers, the service sector, and many others.

S 188981303
Pita Limjaroenrat, Leader of the Move Forward Party, met with a network of workers in Samut Prakan Province on May 26, 2023.

Then, in an interview, Pita stated that he is confident in his ability to enact a wage-increasing policy in the first 100 days of taking office. Considering figures such as the rate of economic growth and inflation rate, as well as labour products over the last 7-8 years, the suitable wage is 450 baht per day.

The 30th PM candidate said this issue must look at both sides of the coin, including the dimension of helping to heal SMEs, as well as evaluating measures following the 2013 wage hike. Following discussions with the Federation of Thai Industries and the Youth Industry Council, he will embark on a tour to meet with the Chamber of Commerce and the Employers’ Council to gain a comprehensive understanding of both sides of the coin.

When asked about the Chamber of Commerce’s concerns about wage increases, which may lead to a shift in production to Vietnam, Pita stated the minimum wage was not the only factor; all personnel must be examined, including corruption, taxation, exports, and the domestic market.

Foreign Direct Investment Has Declined

Previously, Tanit Sorat, Deputy President of the Employer’s Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry (ECONTHAI), reveals that the assembly emphasizes a careful and step-by-step consideration by the new government regarding the proposed minimum wage increase policy.

He stated that the proposed rate of 450 baht per day is considered relatively high, and an immediate adjustment could lead to a repetitive pattern similar to the wage increase in 2013 (300 baht per day nationwide), which resulted in production base relocation to neighboring countries. Similarly, new investments that heavily rely on labor may not materialize.

“When the minimum wage was raised to 300 baht a day, there was a significant relocation of labour-intensive industries, including textiles, footwear, fish canning factories and certain component manufacturers, to neighbouring countries, especially Vietnam.

tanit2
Tanit Sorat, Deputy President of the Employer’s Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry (ECONTHAI)

This is because most of our industries still rely heavily on local labour. We have lost whole lines of workshops that used to do the sewing work for famous sportswear brands. This time, the same pattern will repeat itself because our industrial structure is still primarily dependent on labour without moving towards high-tech industries,” Tanit said.

He explained that as a result of previous high wage increases, Thailand’s export performance, which used to lead the region, including foreign direct investment (FDI), has declined, leaving Vietnam as the leading agent.

labour2

Meanwhile, Thailand’s economic structure relies heavily on high exports. This is the reason why the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth has declined over the last 10 years.

“We must not forget another crucial point: The question of raising the minimum wage is about providing for vulnerable workers who currently receive less. If the minimum wage is raised, the wages of those who already earn 450 baht a day must also be raised. however, 90% of the Thai industry is medium and small enterprises (SMEs), which cannot afford such sudden wage increases.

“Consequently, these factors will be reflected in product prices due to increased costs. This situation causes dissatisfaction among the public and also affects the labour force. However, the economy will suffer even more from the increased costs, affecting Thailand’s competitiveness in exports. At the same time, Vietnam enjoys various tax benefits, which further undermines Thailand’s competitiveness,” the Deputy President of ECONTHAI stated.

labour2

Danucha Pichayanan, Secretary General of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), said that wage increases need to be carefully considered as they can have a significant impact on the business sector, including employment policies. The positive and negative consequences of cost increases should be carefully assessed as they can affect FDI and have an impact on the overall economy.

The Secretary-General also acknowledged that the Thai economy is currently facing challenges and uncertainties and that survival in a fluctuating global economy requires strengthening the country’s resilience.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A passenger opened an emergency exit door during a plane flight in South Korea on Friday, causing air to blast inside the cabin and slightly injure 12 people, officials said. The plane landed safely.

Some people aboard the Asiana Airlines Airbus A321 aircraft tried to stop the person, who was able to partially open the door, the Transport Ministry said.

The person was detained by airport police on suspicion of violating the aviation security law, a ministry statement said. The person’s identity and motive weren’t immediately released.

The law bars passengers from handling exit doors and other equipment on board and provides for penalties of up to 10 years in prison, the ministry said.

The plane with 194 people aboard was heading to the southeastern city of Daegu from the southern island of Jeju. The flight is normally about an hour, and the incident occurred when the plane was reaching the Daegu airport at an altitude of 700 feet (213 meters).

A video apparently taken by a person on board that was posted on social media shows some passengers’ hair being whipped by the air blowing into the cabin through the open door.

The passengers included teenage athletes on their way to a track and field competition. Some screamed and cried in panic, Yonhap news agency reported, citing their unidentified coach.

Yonhap quoted other passengers as saying they suffered severe ear pain after the door opened. It said some cabin crew shouted for help from passengers to prevent the door from being opened.

Twelve people were taken to hospitals for treatment, according to the Transportation Ministry. Emergency officials in Daegu said the injured people suffered breathing problems and other minor symptoms.
