A Look at the Parties and Issues in Thailand’s Election on Sunday

AP PHOTO

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand votes Sunday in an election many see as an opportunity to break free from military-dominated governments that have held power for most of the nation’s modern history.

THE BASICS:

Some 52 million eligible voters will choose among candidates from 70 parties to serve a four-year term in the House of Representatives. It will have 400 members directly elected by constituencies and 100 chosen by proportional representation on a nationwide party preference ballot.

Parties that win at least 25 seats are qualified to nominate a prime minister and can name up to three candidates.

The prime minister is selected by a simple majority of a joint vote of the lower house and the Senate, whose 250 members were not elected but appointed by a military government. That means the winning candidate needs at least 376 votes.

THE BACKSTORY:

Political turmoil has persisted since the 2006 army coup ousting Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. The billionaire populist was accused of corruption and abuse of power, but his popularity also rattled the traditional royalist ruling class, who felt the king and their privilege were threatened.

Thaksin went into exile to avoid prison, but his supporters and opponents continued to fight for power, in the streets and at the ballot box. Thaksin proxy parties won elections, but then were kicked out of office due to controversial legal rulings by the highly conservative courts.

A government that came to power with Thaksin’s sister Yingluck Shinawatra was deposed by a coup in 2014 led by then-army commander Prayuth Chan-ocha. The Thaksin-linked Pheu Thai Party won the most seats in the 2019 election, but a military-backed party cobbled together a coalition government with Prayuth as prime minister.

THE CONTENDERS:

Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, is squaring off against Prayuth, who is running for reelection with the United Thai Nation Party.

Opinion polls show Paetongtarn favored to become the next prime minister and her Pheu Thai Party set to grab the lion’s share of house seats.

The Move Forward Party, led by businessman Pita Limjaroenrat, is surging in the polls, galvanizing especially younger voters as it boldly advocates for reform of the military and monarchy, the latter a sensitive subject since the institution has traditionally been regarded as sacrosanct.

Other parties lag behind but may factor in the wheeling and dealing to assemble a coalition government. They include the Palang Pracharath Party, backing Prayuth’s Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan as its nominee; and the Bhumjaithai Party, which controls a large bloc of votes in the northeast.

THE ISSUES:

In many respects, the election is seen as referendum on Prayuth’s last four years in power, during which his government turned back several no-confidence motions but was widely scorned for mishandling the economy and botching Thailand’s response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Most voters are probably concerned about the ailing economy, and the major parties all promote populist policies generally involving cash handouts.

Move Forward stands out in pushing ideological issues front and center, attracting voters tired of the anti-democratic means by which Prayuth came to and stayed in power, and by extension, the decades of military interference in politics.

POSSIBLE OUTCOMES:

All signs are that Pheu Thai will capture the greatest number of House seats, but forming the next government will be a challenge. The party has little chance of winning votes from the Senate, which gave unanimous support to Prayuth in 2019.

An alliance with Move Forward would be natural because of their shared enmity for the military, but the smaller party’s more radical stance, especially calling for reform of the monarchy, would make other parties reluctant to join.

Pheu Thai could propose one of its alternates as prime minister, playing down the links to the Shinawatra family, which is loathed by royalist conservatives.

It could also back former general Prawit as prime minister in an effort to win the trust and votes of a bloc of otherwise unfriendly senators.

If none of those options work, Prayuth or another figure could emerge as prime minister with a minority government, which would be a recipe for instability.

Thailand – Australia Collaboration on Agriculture Trade Ceremony

On 11 May 2023, Dr. Somchuan Ratanamungklanon, Director General of Department of Livestock Development, Mr Rapibhat Chandarasrivongs, Director General of Department of Agriculture, and Ms. Amber Parr, Counsellor (Agriculture), Australian Embassy Bangkok, have joined the ‘Thailand – Australia Collaboration on Agriculture Trade’ ceremony.

This ceremony has marked close collaboration between two countries on opening trade opportunities for Thai cooked duck meat into Australia and Australian avocado into Thailand. It is pleasing that technical processes to establish import conditions for both commodities have been finalised.

image3 7

image2 8

During the ceremony, the Director General of Department of Agriculture signed the Notification of Department of Agriculture Re: Conditions for Import of Avocado Fruit from Australia. Once this document is published on the royal gazette, and verification is successfully conducted by Thailand, Hass avocado from Western Australia can be imported into Thailand.

image5 3

Australian agriculture counsellor also presented a letter from Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry on Thai cooked duck meat to Director General of Department of Livestock Development. This official letter concludes the health certificate for the importation of cooked duck meat from Thailand into Australia. Once import conditions are uploaded onto Australia’s import condition database, then trade can commence.

These joint achievements are an evident of collaborative spirit between two countries in facilitating agricultural trade while managing biosecurity risks which could have negative impact on economy and environment.

Thailand and Australia have established strong relationship on agriculture for decades. With the elevation of the Thailand-Australia relationship to a Strategic Partnership in November 2020, there are new opportunities to foster closer ties and build more prosperous and sustainable agriculture and agri-food sectors.

Trade has an essential role in building this prosperity and supporting lasting food security. Both countries are net exporters of agriculture, fisheries and forestry products with two-way trade in agriculture worth nearly 80 billion baht in 2022, increasing by 66 per cent in value since 2018.

image4 4

Apart from the trade, both parties have continued constructive exchanges in the areas of mutual interests, including biosecurity management, young smart farmer, agricultural data, dairy, beef and irrigation, as well as sustainable agriculture.

Army Chief Gen Narongpan Jitkaewthae

Army Chief Gen Narongpan Jitkaewthae told reporters on Thursday he cannot guarantee that the military will not intervene again if the country is facing political upheaval in the next five months while the army is under his command.

“I cannot guarantee. That means [we must consider] whether the country is orderly not. All sides must cooperate…”

When asked by reporters more specifically whether there will be military coup or not, the army chief said he has told reporters numerous times that they should stop asking about coup “because it will continuously ferment conflicting ideas”

The Army chief said reporters should stop using the words “military coup”. Reporters then asked if the words have been removed by the army.

The words “military coup” have been “removed [from the army’s dictionary] under his command, Narongpan replied. The remark came amidst growing speculations about a possible coup if Move Forward Party leads the next government as it seeks to reform the lese majeste law and end compulsory military conscription.

Narongpan said whoever is in government has the power to push for their policies including ending compulsory military conscription. “There are matters that soldiers have to discuss. There are those who agree and disagree. That’s normal…”

Asked if he’s worried there’ll be political upheaval leading to the military to intervene again or not, the army chief said “I’m not worried because we had a lot of lessons in the past… Politics under democratic system must proceed but everyone must be alert and know what’s appropriate and what’s inappropriate for  our country. That is, the country needs peace and order.”

A Former Pilot Arrested For Luring 29 Women Into Sex For Filming

A former commercial airline pilot Pattarawit Pipittaphan, 38, was arrested at dawn Thursday, May 11, 2023 in Bangkok, for luring 29 women to have sex with him and video recorded the acts for online sales.

His collaborator Atthapol Laprathao, 33, was arrested for recording and selling the sex video clips. The police confiscated objects such as notebook computers, mobile phones, hard disk drives, and hidden car keyless cameras.

At a news conference, Thailand’s Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau reported the arrest of the two individuals for indecent conduct and defamation by advertising using sound recordings, photos, or text records. Also done by broadcasting, picture distribution, or other forms of publishing by importing them into a computer system.

For these allegations, the offender faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison and a fine of two hundred thousand baht.

A female victim filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, claiming that prior to the 2020-2022 incident, she had known and talked to the accused via dating apps such as Tinder, Instagram, Facebook, and LINE, with the intention of simply making an appointment to have sex at a hotel in the Ratchathewi area.

Then she had intercourse with him, unaware of the hidden video camera, until she discovered a pornographic film clip of her with face-blurred of the man appeared on VK, Telegram, and numerous pornographic sites. In addition, there is a cost to watch or trade video.

captain
Many pornographic film clips have been sold online.

Police investigators then gathered evidence prior to asking the court to issue arrest warrants for the two accused persons. It is also found that Mr. Pattharawit had been prosecuted in the similar manner at the North Samrong Police Station and the Khok Kram police station.

According to the investigation, Mr. Pattarawit opened a hotel room in the Ratchathewi neighbourhood 13 times to arrange for victims to videotape recordings of themselves having sex. In 2021, rooms at the hotel were also used seven times. It happened to coincide with the sale of the sex clips in a private group.

captain
The police confiscated objects such as notebook computers, mobile phones, hard disk drives, and hidden cameras.

Police have identified 29 similarly abused victims of VK videos, and more than 1,000 secret videos of similar rooms have been found. All victims are good-looking. and have a good job. Some of them are Miss Grand contestant, FHM model, and Pretty models.

Mr. Pattarawit told the police that he contacted women via LINE groups, which included photographs of women for him to choose from, before scheduling an appointment through the group’s agent, Mr. Atthapon, for a service fee of roughly 2,000–3,000 baht per time.

The former plane captain stated that he had never communicated with any woman before meeting her in the room. Mr. Atthaphon, on the other hand, recommended the hotel, which was always assigned the same room.

Mr. Pattarawit said that he had no awareness of a concealed camera and had no idea who installed it. He had also been a victim.

The police said sextortion crimes are on the rise now. Victims are often tricked into sending them private pictures and then threatened with revealing them. As a result, the victim loses money or submissive sex in exchange for not publishing the pictures or clips.

The Complainants in the Final Phase of the Election Campaign

One of the trends in the Thai political landscape in recent years has been the increase in “complainants”, or “singer” in Thai, objecting to various cases of political parties or politicians, which have gone from minor issues to hot topics.

Activist lawyer Srisuwan Janya and former senator Ruangkrai Leekijwattana rank top as the complainer.

On May 11, 2023, Srisuwan was punched by a 67-year-old man named Todsapol when he went to provide more data to the Election Commission (EC) in the Pheu Thai election campaign case, where the party introduced a policy of giving away 10,000 baht. He referred the case to the Election Commission to investigate whether or not the policy violated the Election Act or other laws.

Todsapol said he was running some errands at Government Complex and saw Srisuwan, whom he described as someone with whom he had been dissatisfied for a long time. He added that Srisuwan has been implicated in too many cases so he is not sure if he was hired for that, but added that what Srisuwan has done is not good for society and is destroying democracy.

He said he had recently seen that Srisuwan had appealed against the Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties. He was about to punch Srisuwan more when people came nearby to stop him. If no one stopped him, he said, he would do more. He also stressed that he hit Srisuwan out of personal intention.

srisuwan2
Srisuwan Janya

Srisuwan was similarly violated at the Cyber Crimes Investigation Division office on 18 October 2022 by a man who was unhappy with Srisuwan’s movements. The public debated whether violence should be used in politics. However, some people feel that Srisuwan deserved the violation.

However, the case of more concern is that Ruengkrai Leekitwattana filed a petition with the Election Commission on May 10, asking the EC to decide before the general election whether Move Forward PM’s candidate, Pita Limjaroenrat, can or cannot run for office because of his ownership of media shares (ITV). He said he had spent 5 days and several thousand baht investigating and Pita had admitted to owning the share.

reungkrai
Ruengkrai Leekitwattana

Although Pita stressed he was not worried and was ready for the declaration, the situation is causing concern among the public as people now fear that the pro-democracy parties may not be able to form a government after the election. Some fear that it could be as bad as when the Future Forward party was dissolved and Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit was dismissed from parliament because he had a stake in a media company, even though that media company had gone bust long ago.

Srettha Thavisin, a Pheu Thai candidate for prime minister, said he had faith in the democratic system, although he distrusted independent organisations. He added that he supported Pita for the declaration and hoped he would get justice. However, he said he was worried about Move Forward as the party could only put forward one candidate for prime minister.

Mommy Blogger Heather Armstrong, Known as Dooce, Dead at 47

This image released by Peter Ashdown shows a selfie of mommy blogger Heather Armstrong in Salt Lake City on April 1, 2023. (AP)

NEW YORK (AP) — The pioneering mommy blogger Heather Armstrong, who laid bare her struggles as a parent and her battles with depression and alcoholism on her site Dooce.com and on social media, has died at 47.

Armstrong’s boyfriend, Pete Ashdown, told The Associated Press that he found her Tuesday night at their Salt Lake City home.

She had two children with her former husband and business partner, Jon Armstrong, began Dooce in 2001 and built it into a lucrative career. She was one of the first and most popular mommy bloggers, writing frankly about her children, relationships and other challenges at a time that personal blogs were on the rise.

She parlayed her successes with the blog, on Instagram and elsewhere into book deals, putting out a memoir in 2009, “It Sucked and then I Cried: How I Had a Baby, a Breakdown and a Much Needed Margarita.”

That year, Armstrong appeared on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and was on the Forbes list of the most influential women in media.

In 2012, the Armstrongs announced they were separating. They divorced later that year. She began dating Ashdown, a former U.S. senate candidate, nearly six years ago. They lived together with Armstrong’s children, 19-year-old Leta and 13-year-old Marlo. He has three children from a previous marriage who spent time in their home as well.

Ashdown said Armstrong died by suicide. He told the AP that she had been sober for more than 18 months, and recently had a relapse. He did not provide further details.

Armstrong didn’t hold back on Instagram and Dooce, the latter a name that arose from her inability to quickly spell “dude” during online chats. Her raw, unapologetic posts on everything from pregnancy and breastfeeding to homework and carpooling were often infused with curses. As her popularity grew, so too did the barbs of critics, who accused her of bad parenting and worse. One of her posts on Dooce spoke of a previous victory over drinking.

“On October 8th, 2021 I celebrated six months of sobriety by myself on the floor next to my bed feeling as if I were a wounded animal who wanted to be left alone to die,” Armstrong wrote. “There was no one in my life who could possibly comprehend how symbolic a victory it was for me, albeit … one fraught with tears and sobbing so violent that at one point I thought my body would split in two. The grief submerged me in tidal waves of pain. For a few hours I found it hard to breathe.”

She went on: “Sobriety was not some mystery I had to solve. It was simply looking at all my wounds and learning how to live with them.”

In her memoir, she described how her blog began as a way to share her thoughts on pop culture with faraway friends. Within a year, her audience grew from a few friends to thousands of strangers around the world, she wrote.

More and more, Armstrong said, she found herself writing about her personal life and, eventually, an office job for a tech start-up, and “how much I wanted to strangle my boss, often using words and phrases that would embarrass a sailor.”

Her employer found the site and fired her, she wrote. She took it down but started back up again six months later, writing about her new husband, Armstrong, and how unemployment had forced them to move from Los Angeles to her mother’s basement in Utah.

She was soon pregnant. The pregnancy offered “an endless trove” of content, she wrote, “but I truly believed that I would give it all up once I had the baby.”

She didn’t, going on to chronicle her highs and lows as a new mother.

“I don’t think I would have survived it had I not offered up my story and reached out to bridge the loneliness,” she wrote.

At its peak, Dooce had more than 8 million monthly readers, a healthy following that allowed her to monetize her online presence.

Armstrong was raised in Memphis, Tennessee, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but left the faith after graduating from Brigham Young University and moving to Los Angeles. She suffered chronic depression for much of her life but wasn’t diagnosed and treated until college, according to her book.

In 2017, after the unraveling of her marriage, the internet star dubbed “the queen of the mommy bloggers” by The New York Times Magazine took a tumble in popularity as social media came into its own.

Her depression grew worse, leading her to enroll in a clinical trial at the University of Utah’s Neuropsychiatric Institute. She was put in a chemically induced coma for 15 minutes at a time for 10 sessions.

“I was feeling like life was not meant to be lived,” Armstrong told Vox. “When you are that desperate, you will try anything. I thought my kids deserved to have a happy, healthy mother, and I needed to know that I had tried all options to be that for them.”

In 2019, she wrote her third book, “The Valedictorian of Being Dead: The True Story of Dying Ten Times to Live,” about her experiences with the treatment.

“I want people with depression to feel like they are seen,” she told Vox.

Armstrong attributed, in part, some of her past emotional spirals to sharing her life online for so long.

“The hate was very, very scary and very, very hard to live through,” she said in the interview. “It gets inside your head and eats away at your brain. It became untenable.”

Video footage from the Honda Jazz showed that the Honda Accord had already crashed into the barrier. The Mercedes-Benz then hit the motorbike before it crashed violently into the rear of the Honda Accord. The owner of the Honda Accord, who was standing near the car, was able to save himself in time.

Later, Sujinda Luangpratum, 46, Raewat’s wife, arrived at the scene crying. She said that her husband usually went to the Bang Yai market by motorbike to buy chickens and prepare for the morning sale. However, today he took quite a long time, so she asked a motorbike taxi driver to look for him until the driver found his bike. She said she did not think her husband would die this way.

The police recorded the scene and will question the foreign driver again.
