Local elementary school students invited to preview a new Harry Potter theme park in Tokyo's Nerima Ward walk around a Hogwarts Castle experience on April 24, 2023, ahead of its official opening in June. (Kyodo)
A Harry Potter theme park was unveiled in Tokyo at a media preview ahead of its scheduled opening on June 16, park operator Warner Bros. Studios Japan LLC. said Monday.
The Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo – The Making of Harry Potter will be the company’s second attraction themed on its popular films, based on the famous novels by British author J.K. Rowling, following the success of a similar theme park in London.
The media and about 30 local elementary school students were invited to see a replica of Hogwarts Castle’s Great Hall, an iconic building that served as the stage for many of the adventures embarked upon by Harry and his friends.
The students got to see various features of the hall, such as animal-shaped candle holders, its flagstone floor and life-sized statues of the characters.
“I was impressed that everything was replicated in minute detail. I can’t wait for the opening,” said Setsuna Goto, an 11-year-old elementary school student.
The park, located in Tokyo’s Nerima Ward, is being built on what was the 30,000-square meter site of Toshimaen park, formerly one of the largest amusement parks in the capital, which was closed in August 2020 after nearly 100 years.
The Children’s Hospital Foundation receives 1,000,000-baht donation from KFC’s Fulfilling Meals to Fulfilling Hearts for Kids campaign to support the ‘One Heart to New Life’ campaign, helping infants with critical congenital heart disease receive surgery and intensive care treatment until fully recovered
Bangkok: 3April 2023 – Dr. Pavit Poonyarit, M.D., Managing Director of the Children’s Hospital Foundation, along with the foundation’s board members and Dr. Akarathan Jitnuyanont, M.D., Director of the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, recently received a donation of 1,000,000 baht from Mr. Piyapong Chitchumnong, Senior Vice President of QSR & Western Cuisine, KFC, under the operations of Central Restaurants Group Co., Ltd. (CRG) and management team to contribute to the ‘One Heart to New Life’ campaign.
‘One Heart to New Life’ helps infants with critical congenital heart disease receive surgery and treatment in intensive care units until making a full recovery. The donation was the proceeds from the KFC’s Fulfilling Meals to Fulfilling Hearts for Kids campaign carried out from 5 January to 28 February 2023,and contributed to by customers at all KFC branches nationwide, bringing happiness, smiles and a better quality of life to Thai children.
Dr. Pavit Poonyarit, M.D., Managing Director of the Children’s Hospital Foundation, said: “On behalf of the Foundation, we would like to express our gratitude to KFC for placing importance on contributing to society by making this donation to support the surgical funds for infants with critical congenital heart disease in Thailand, under the ‘One Heart To New Life’ campaign. Thank you, KFC, for encouraging contributions from people in Thailand to provide opportunities to underprivileged infants to undergo surgery and receive proper treatment in order to return to a normal healthy life.”
On this occasion, Dr. Pimpak Prachasilchai, M.D., Head of Pediatric Cardiology unit, pediatric cardiology consultant, Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, along with foundation board members welcomed KFC executives on their visit to the Pediatric Cardiac Center of Excellence and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health.
Mr. Piyapong Chitchumnong, Senior Vice President of QSR & Western Cuisine, KFC, under the operations of Central Restaurants Group Co., Ltd. (CRG) said:“Every parent expects their child to be born healthy, with fully-formed organs, however, not every child or every family is that fortunate. Congenital heart disease is found in 8 out of 1,000 new-born babies, and 25% of those are in critical condition.
The costs for specialized surgery and special equipment are very high and many families are unable to afford the cost of treatment; without the treatment, these babies eventually die.
However, we realized that we could help provide them with a completely new life, with KFC taking part in saving the lives of infants with critical congenital heart disease. We have always and will continue to give back to society, and the campaign has received great feedback from our customers, resulting in a donation amount as high as 1 million baht.”
The ‘One Heart to New Life’ campaign aims to help save 25 infants from critical congenital heart disease – which is fatal without treatment. These infants need specialized surgical treatment with special equipment, and need to receive post-operative care in intensive care units for a longer than normal period of time, resulting in high expenses of 700,000 baht to 1,000,000 baht per infant.
The Children’s Hospital Foundation, therefore, invites you to help give these underprivileged infants a chance to survive by making your donation to the Children’s Hospital Foundation, Siam Commercial Bank, account no.051-3-0051-5 or Krungthai Bank, account no.661-055841-8 or for more information, please contact: 02-354-8321 or email: [email protected]
Two teenagers, aged 11 and 17, were struck by lightning at the Khlong Khut-Mueang Satun airfield in the Khlong Khut subdistrict of the Mueang Satun province in southern Thailand.
A friend of the two dead teenagers, Nong, told reporters they were supposed to meet on Sunday, April 23. However, it was raining in the afternoon. Nong said he would meet the two teenagers at the meeting place a little later. The two teenagers were not there when Nong arrived at the meeting place. He thought that the two friends might find somewhere else to hide from the rain, so he went back to inform their parents.
Later, the families searched for the two teenagers but did not find them. The bodies were found on Monday under a big tree.
Mueang Satun police informed doctors at Satun Hospital before sending the two bodies for an investigation into the cause of death. It is initially suspected that the death was caused by lightning while playing a kite.
It is reported that the local authorities have scheduled a meeting to find a preventive measure for the incident so that it does not happen again. They could put up a warning sign to inform those who want to play with kites in an open area.
Authorities said older generations have always warned against hiding under a tree from the rain, but children may not be aware of it, leading to these casualties.
Thailand is currently experiencing a summer where some areas are experiencing extreme heat. The Thai Meteorological Department has issued constant warnings of summer thunderstorms. However, the Disease Control Department of the Ministry of Health has not yet released any new information on deaths from the thunderstorm.
According to 2013 Ministry of Health data retrieved from hospital networks in 33 localities, it was found that there were a total of 180 people with serious lighting injuries between 2008 and 2012, an average of 36 people per year. The total number of deaths was 46 people.
The percentage of deaths after lighting was 30 per cent due to heart failure from high-voltage electricity. Even if the lighting does not directly hit the person, it is still dangerous to be in the vicinity because the electricity can reach people in the vicinity in many ways.

LONDON (AP) — Manchester United advanced to the FA Cup final on Sunday by beating Brighton 7-6 on penalty kicks at Wembley.
Defender Victor Lindelof struck the winning spot kick after the semifinal match ended 0-0 through extra time.

Solly March had fired over the bar for Brighton after both teams had converted their previous six penalties, leaving Lindelof to set up a final showdown with Manchester City in June.
Victory saw United immediately bounce back after being dumped out of the Europa League by Sevilla on Thursday and sets up an enticing all-Manchester final.
It also gives Erik ten Hag the chance to win his second trophy in his first season at the club after lifting the League Cup in February.

But it was a cruel way for Brighton to lose after creating the best chances in regulation time, forcing David de Gea to make three saves to keep the game goalless after 90 minutes.
The United goalkeeper pushed away an early free kick from Alexis Mac Allister and then pulled off another flying save to deny Julio Enciso in the second half.
March’s low effort was also goalbound late on but pounced on by De Gea.

Bruno Fernandes had United’s best chances and should have hit the target with an effort from inside the box shortly before halftime.
In extra time Marcus Rashford came close to breaking the deadlock, but Robert Sanchez tipped his deflected effort from the edge of the box round the post.
It needed penalties to separate the teams, and with neither ’keeper making a save during the shootout, it was March’s wayward strike that proved the difference.
Man United will play Man City at Wembley on Saturday, 3 June.

BANGKOK (AP) — A top election official in Myanmar was fatally shot in his car in Yangon, the country’s commercial capital, in the latest attack attributed to militants opposed to military rule.
Sai Kyaw Thu, deputy director-general of the military-appointed Union Election Commission, was shot multiple times on Saturday, according to the military’s information office, media reports and a statement of responsibility from an urban guerrilla group.
Many opposition forces including local People’s Defense Force groups operate autonomously from the National Unity Government but the military labels them all as “terrorists.”
A resistance group calling itself “For The Yangon” said it carried out the attack on Sai Kyaw Thu, a former lieutenant colonel. It declared “Mission: Accomplished” in a Facebook post on Saturday evening that was illustrated with three photos of their target.
Sai Kyaw Thu is believed to be the most senior official of the Election Commission to be shot since the army seized power on Feb. 1, 2021, from the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi.
Resistance groups earlier this year attempted to disrupt preparations for a new election the military had promised by attacking personnel conducting a population survey that could be used to assemble voter rolls and other low-level election workers. Plans for the polls, whose date was never set, were set back indefinitely in February when the military government announced it was extending a state of emergency due to security problems.
Urban guerrillas have carried out many targeted killings, acts of arson and small bombings. Victims included officials and members of the military and their cronies, as well as people believed to be informers or military collaborators.
In November 2021, a former navy officer who was the chief finance officer of Myanmar’s military-linked Mytel telecommunications company was fatally shot on a Yangon street. Than Than Swe, then a deputy governor of Myanmar’s Central Bank, was shot at her home in Yangon in April 2022. She survived and was promoted to the bank governor.
Most recently, a veteran corporate lawyer accused of helping military leaders was shot dead in Yangon by self-proclaimed urban guerrillas in March.
After its takeover, the army clamped down harshly on opponents in the cities, arresting thousands and using deadly force even against nonviolent demonstrators. The repression, which has now accounted for more than 3,400 civilian deaths, triggered widespread armed resistance.
The military dismissed the members of the previous election commission — which had ratified the victory of Suu Kyi’s party in a November 2020 general election — and appointed new ones. It also detained several members of the old commission, and according to reports in independent Myanmar media, pressured them to say there had been election fraud.
The new military-appointed commission declared the 2020 election results invalid and prosecuted Suu Kyi and 15 other senior political figures for alleged fraud.
In the statement, “For The Yangon” claimed Sai Kyaw Thu had been a plaintiff in the election fraud case against Suu Kyi. She and ousted President Win Myint and the former minister of the president’s office, Min Thu, received three-year sentences in September last year in that case.
A member of guerrilla group said in a text message on Sunday that Sai Kyaw Thu was assassinated “for being the deputy director-general of the illegal election commission of the military council, which disrespected the votes of the people in 2020 general election and abused the people unjustly, and also for being the one who falsely prosecuted President Win Myint and Aung San Suu Kyi as an accessory of the military council.”
“The one who insults the public will be punished by the people,” said the member of group, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he fears arrest by the authorities.
According to reports in Myanmar’s independent media, Sai Kyaw Thu was cross-examined as a prosecution witness in the trials against Suu Kyi last year.

CHICAGO (AP) — Twitter has long been a way for people to keep track of tornado watches, train delays, news alerts or the latest crime warnings from their local police department.
But when the Elon Musk-owned platform started stripping blue verification checkmarks this week from accounts that don’t pay a monthly fee, it left public agencies and other organizations around the world scrambling to figure out a way to show they’re trustworthy and avoid impersonators.
High-profile users who lost their blue checks Thursday included Beyoncé, Pope Francis, Oprah Winfrey and former President Donald Trump. But checks were also removed from accounts for major transit systems from San Francisco to Paris, national parks like Yosemite, official weather trackers and some elected officials.
Twitter had about 300,000 verified users under the original blue-check system. In the past, the checks meant that Twitter had verified that users were who they said they were.
While Twitter is now offering gold checks for “verified organizations” and gray checks for government organizations and their affiliates, it was not always clear why some accounts had them Friday and others did not.

Fake accounts claiming to represent Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, the city’s Department of Transportation and the Illinois Department of Transportation all began sharing messages early Friday falsely claiming that Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive — a major thoroughfare — would close to private traffic starting next month.
A critical eye could spot obvious hints of the fraud. The account handles are slightly different from the authentic ones representing Lightfoot and the transportation agencies. The fakes also had far fewer followers than the legitimate accounts. But the fakes used the same photos, biographical text and home page links as the real ones.
The genuine, long-standing accounts for Lightfoot and the transportation agencies did not have a blue or gray checkmark as of Friday. Requests for comment were not immediately returned.
Other agencies said they were awaiting more clarity from Twitter, which has sharply curtailed its staff since Musk bought the San Francisco company for $44 billion last year. The confusion has raised concerns that Twitter could lose its status as a platform for getting accurate, up-to-date information from authentic sources, including in emergencies.
As a tornado was about to strike central New Jersey earlier this month, a go-to account for safety information was run by the National Weather Service branch in Mount Holly, New Jersey. It had a blue check at the time. It no longer has any check, though the main NWS account and some other regional branches now sport a gray check marking them as official accounts.

Susan Buchanan, director of public affairs for the weather service, said the agency is in the process of applying to get the gray check mark for government agencies. She declined to answer why some regional NWS branches lost their marks and others have them.
The costs of keeping the marks range from $8 a month for individual web users to a starting price of $1,000 monthly to verify an organization, plus $50 monthly for each affiliate or employee account. But the meaning of the check has changed to symbolize that the user bought a premium account that can help their tweets be seen by more people. It also includes other features such as the ability to edit tweets.
Celebrity users, from basketball star LeBron James to author Stephen King and Star Trek’s William Shatner, have balked at joining — although all three still had blue checks on Friday after Musk said he paid for them himself.
For users who still had a blue check, a popup message indicated that the account “is verified because they are subscribed to Twitter Blue and verified their phone number.” Verifying a phone number simply means that the person has a phone number and they verified that they have access to it — it does not confirm the person’s identity.
Fewer than 5% of legacy verified accounts appear to have paid to join Twitter Blue, according to an analysis by Travis Brown, a Berlin-based developer of software for tracking social media.
Musk’s move to end what he’s called the “lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark” has riled up some high-profile users and pleased some right-wing figures and Musk fans who thought the marks were unfair. But it is not an obvious money-maker for the social media platform that has long relied on advertising for most of its revenue.
While a few prominent users said they would stop using Twitter over the lost check, many public agencies appeared to be sticking to the service.
Asked Friday about the German government’s continued use of Twitter, spokesperson Christiane Hoffmann said: “Of course we are watching very closely what’s happening on Twitter and we continually ask ourselves if it’s right to have channels there and how they should continue.”
Hoffmann said the government was “concerned” about developments on Twitter in recent weeks and months, adding that the ministries, spokespeople and Chancellor Olaf Scholz now have gray ticks “for which nothing is paid.”
After previously raising concerns about the loss of verification, emergency management agency in the state of Washington was granted a gray check and said it would keep using Twitter.
“Given that anyone can now buy a blue checkmark, we’ll be monitoring it much more closely to ensure bad actors aren’t creating fake accounts under our name but we still find it to be a valuable tool to share important, life-safety information especially during an emergency,” said Karina Shagren, communications director for the Washington Emergency Management Division.

A royal motorcade drives through a crowd of anti-government protesters in front of Government House on Oct. 14, 2020.
In late March, I took an oath and stood as a defense witness in front of three presiding judges at the Criminal Court in one of the rarest criminal cases in Thailand.
Five people, including a well-known activist Ekachai Hongkangwan and Mahidol University student leader Francis Bunkueanun Paothong, are on trial for attempting to harm the freedom of Her Majesty the Queen on October 14, 2020.
Basically, they were accused of blocking the Queen’s motorcade in front of the Government House shortly after 5pm on that day. The maximum punishment under the law, Article 110 of the Criminal Code, is life imprisonment. All told, the defense attorney from Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, May Poonsukcharoen, told me there has been no record of any previous invocation of the law so this might very well be the first-time people are on trial under the law.
The five were among the 200 or so monarchy-reform protesters on the streets on that day. They pushed ahead of the larger and main group of demonstrators, numbering in thousands, who were still behind at Nang Lerng Intersection, some five minutes’ walk behind. The front-line protesters found themselves in front of the Government House, the office of the Prime Minister, and no one had any clue a royal motorcade was soon to approach. This is what I told the judges.
As a defense witness, I stressed to the judges that the circumstances were most unusual on that late afternoon. BTW, I was asked to stand as a witness because on that fateful day, I and my colleague, Tappanai Boonbandit, were there in front of the Government House covering the event live on Facebook for Khaosod English.
A 17-minute clip from a longer Facebook Live footage was presented to the court by the defense attorney as evidence to prove that neither Ekachai nor Francis or the three others by any chance had or intended to hold the royal motorcade against Her Majesty’s will.
Back to my testimony, I noted that there was no warning at all by any of the hundreds of police officers deployed in the area that a royal motorcade will soon pass Phitsanulok Road.
Normally, police wearing formal uniform will arrive on site to ensure order at the area where a royal motorcade will pass but not this time, I noted.
When suddenly the first two cars arrived, I noticed a royal insignia of the King on the side of the vehicles and yet there was still no announcement by any of the officers. Probably not all protesters had seen it because you have to be on the side of the vehicles to see the emblem on the cars’ doors.
Soon after, dozens of police began forming themselves into a human wall, four-to-five men deep, and started to push the protesters back. Behind these police officers was the vintage beige Rolls-Royce with the Queen and HRH Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti on the back seats.
I only saw the two passengers after the push by police and prior to that moment, most protesters on the streets would have little or no clue that the Queen’s limousine was wafting towards their direction but would have thought the police officers were simply trying to disperse them from the front of the Government House and so they got upset.
When the protesters finally saw with their very own eyes that it was the Queen’s vehicle wanting to pass, they did not try to stop the motorcade although some were visibly unhappy about the situation and some shouted.
“Why was there no announcement or warning in advance? Why did the police seem so relaxed and clueless until the very moment the vehicle approached?” I mentioned it to the judges.
The most senior of the three judges then asked me why I think that was the case. I then replied saying it is possible that someone may have wanted the situation to escalate into violence so martial law could be declared, thus justifying another period of full-fledged dictatorship.
“If that happened there wouldn’t be a general election this May,” I told the judges.
For the record, PM Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has declared a short-lived severe state of emergency before dawn of the following day. The defense lawyer also told me after I testified that a police witness also told the court he did not know about the coming royal motorcade until the very last minute.
Postscript: The verdict will be announced on June 28.
Thosapone Dansuputra, director-general of the Business Development Department, in his capacity as the Secretary of the Board of Investment of Foreign Business, revealed that in the first quarter of 2023 (January – March), a total of 174 foreign businesses were granted permission to invest in Thailand under the Foreign Business Act of 1999, with a total investment value of 33 billion baht (960 U.S.dollars).
Out of these, 56 businesses obtained investment licenses and 118 received a certificate of permission to operate their business. These businesses also created job opportunities for 1,932 Thai people.
When comparing the same period in 2022, it was found that there were 28 more foreign businesses granted permission to invest in Thailand, representing a 19 per cent increase. The total investment value also increased by 6,664 million baht, a 25 per cent increase.
The top five foreign investors are:
1) Japan with 46 businesses (26%), investing 12,172 million baht.
2) Singapore with 30 businesses (17%), investing 4,507 million baht.
3) United States with 25 businesses (14%), investing 1,687 million baht.
4) China with 10 businesses (6%), investing 10,987 million baht.
5) Switzerland with 9 businesses (5%), investing 1,677 million baht.
Businesses that received 2023 licences from January to March were mostly in line with the country’s infrastructure development. This is in line with the policy to encourage investment to improve the country’s competitiveness.
The projects are:
Petroleum drilling service within the surveyed area in the Gulf of Thailand.
Design, procurement, installation, improvement, system testing, system integration, commissioning, and management services for the railway project.

Police investigate the area where two women were attacked in Hino, western Tokyo, on April 21, 2023. (Kyodo)
The body of a missing brother suspected of attacking his two elderly sisters with an ax was found by a river in Tokyo on Saturday, a day after the assault, local police said.
The body of the man in his 70s was discovered at around 9:05 a.m. on the banks of Tama River in Tachikawa, western Tokyo. There were no external wounds, and his body and his clothes were wet.
The sisters, also in their 70s, were taken to hospital on Friday night with injuries to their neck and back after the sudden attack at their home in the neighboring Hino, but they were not life-threatening.
The police had been searching for the brother, who had been living with his sisters. They are investigating the case as attempted murder.
