Opinion: Shame or the Lack Thereof in Thai Politics

PM Prayut Chan-o-cha addresses the Parliament during a debate on Feb. 16, 2023.
PM Prayut Chan-o-cha addresses the Parliament during a debate on Feb. 16, 2023.

In a sane and democratic society, there is no way a former junta leader and his deputy could be running for the post of prime minister – not after they have committed treason by overthrowing an elected government.

In Thailand, former junta leader Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha is now trying to become PM again for the third consecutive term (if his first five years right after the 2014 coup with him being both junta leader and PM could be counted as his first term in the office as PM that is), competing with others, including his own former deputy junta leader, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, who is also currently the first deputy PM.

These are not just logic defying situation, but it pushed Thailand toward a new level of tolerance for shamelessness and political absurdity.

It should thus come as no surprise that Prayut would attack the opposition Pheu Thai Party for past corruption convictions during this week’s House Debate by saying he is neither corrupt nor had ever flee from corruption conviction – a reference to the two ousted and fugitive former premiers, Yingluck and Thaksin Shinawatra.

In his mind, or at least in an attempt to convince the public, staging a coup is no corruption, appointing the senators so they could later vote for Prayut to become PM again, as they did back in 2019, and could do it again in the months ahead after the general elections is also no corruption.

In reality, it is a mockery of the notion of corruption, however. Clearly the definition of what constitutes corruption in Thailand is too narrowly defined to the point where a person like Prayut could get away with many things and claim to be incorruptible despite his obvious flaws. Earlier this week, Prayut even told the House of Representatives that he can be scrutinized despite the fact that due to his junta leader status, he is not bound to declare his assets like (other) politicians. So, till today we do not know whether he is unusually rich or has ill-gotten wealth or not.

Nevertheless, it would be unfair to simply solely blame Prayut. It takes two to tango and the partners of this unconstitutional military intervention into Thai politics and the usurpation of people’s political rights are some of the Thai people themselves.

These Thais have such a high tolerance threshold to what is illegitimate and wrong to the point where almost anything is permissible in Thai politics.

That is why last Sunday, a prominent junta-appointed senator dared to publicly threaten the main opposition Pheu Thai Party by saying many senators will likely not vote for Pheu Thai PM candidate Paetongtarn Shinawatra to become PM even if the party wins most seats in the upcoming general election. Unelected senator Wanchai Sornsiri said Paetongtarn is “immature” and could cause political rifts if she becomes the next PM.

Or consider these questions, for example.

Is a military coup acceptable? No problem. Junta leader making himself PM? Okay, been there done that. Junta leader appoints senators so they could vote for him to become PM again after elections? Why not? Been there. Done that and could do it again soon. Then another possible round for Prayut to become PM yet again? These people no longer see what is very wrong with that. And that is what is wrong with Thai society today.

Things have become so messed up to the point where there is no point for some to talk about legitimacy, decency, shame and what’s right or wrong anymore. Some Thais have hardly learned anything over the past eight years since the 2014 coup led by Prayuth and Prawit. We should not count on them to rectify the situation anytime soon.

If you think Thailand has sunk low enough over the past eight years, things could get even worse in the months and years ahead and some would not even notice it.

Saudi Wealth Fund Becomes Biggest Outside Nintendo Investor

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A Saudi sovereign wealth fund now holds 8.26% of the stock in the video game maker Nintendo, making it the largest outside investor in the Japanese gaming outfit, a company filing said Friday.

The investment comes as part of efforts by the kingdom’s Public Investment Fund to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy away from oil, including billions already spent on video game firms. The fund has been a major component in the plans of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, himself said to be an avid gamer.

(AP Photo/Chris Pizzello)

The Public Investment Fund declined to comment Friday night about its increased stakes in Nintendo.

However, the purchase of Nintendo and other gaming stocks entangles the video game companies into the politics surrounding Saudi Arabia and its assertive 37-year-old crown prince. American intelligence agencies believe Prince Mohammed ordered the slaying of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

Nintendo did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding Saudi investment.

A filing to Japanese regulators on Friday revealed the Public Investment Fund’s holding in Kyoto-based Nintendo. Saudi Arabia has been steadily building its stake over recent months in the company, best known for its Super Mario Brothers franchise and its Nintendo Switch gaming console.

The Saudi fund remains behind Nintendo’s own holdings in the gaming company. Nintendo is valued at $52 billion.

Nintendo stock closed slight down Friday on the Tokyo Stock Exchange at $40.50 a share.

The Public Investment Fund did not immediately acknowledge increasing its holdings in Nintendo. It runs the Savvy Games Group, which aims to establish 250 gaming companies in Saudi Arabia and create 39,000 jobs. Savvy Games plans to invest some $38 billion into the gaming industry over the coming years.

Already, the Saudi wealth fund holds stock worth $2.9 billion in Activision Blizzard, $1.7 billion in Electronic Arts, $1.2 billion stake in Take-Two Interactive, according to data from the Nasdaq Stock Market.

The Saudi expansion into gaming, however, has sparked criticism. Riot Games, which makes the popular online multiplayer game League of Legends, cancelled a partnership with Prince Mohammed’s planned futuristic city Neom in 2020 after an outcry from gamers.

Sheriff: Gunman Kills 6, Including Ex-wife, in Mississippi

Law enforcement personnel investigate the scene of multiple shootings on Arkabutla Dam Road in Arkabutla, Miss on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023. Six people were fatally shot Friday at multiple locations in a small town in rural Mississippi near the Tennessee state line, and authorities blamed a lone suspect who was arrested and charged with murder. (AP Photo/Nikki Boertman)

ARKABUTLA, Miss. (AP) — A lone gunman killed six people including his ex-wife and stepfather Friday at multiple locations in a tiny rural community in northern Mississippi, the sheriff said, leaving investigators searching for clues to what motivated the rampage.

Armed with a shotgun and two handguns, 52-year-old Richard Dale Crum opened fire at about 11 a.m. and killed a man in the driver’s seat of a pickup truck parked outside a convenience store in Arkabutla, near the Tennessee state line, Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance said.

Deputies were working the crime scene when a second 911 call alerted authorities to another shooting a few miles away. After arriving at a home, they found a woman, whom the sheriff identified as Crum’s ex-wife, shot dead and her current husband wounded.

Lance said deputies caught up with Crum outside his own home and arrested him. Behind the residence they found two handymen slain by gunfire — one in the road, another in an SUV. Inside a neighboring home, they discovered the bodies of Crum’s stepfather and his stepfather’s sister.

“Everybody has crime, and from time to time we have violent crime, but certainly nothing of this magnitude,” Lance said in an interview. He added: “Without being able to say what triggered this, that’s the scary part.”

Crum, 52, was jailed without bond on a single charge of capital murder, and Lance said investigators were working to bring additional charges. It was not immediately known if Crum had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

That initial murder charge was for the killing of Chris Eugene Boyce, 59, the man who was shot outside the store. Boyce’s brother was in the truck with him at the time and fled, according to the sheriff. Lance added that Crum chased the brother through a wooded area before he escaped unharmed.

Deputy Tate County Coroner Ernie Lentz identified the others killed as Debra Crum, 60; Charles Manuel, 76; John Rorie, 59; George McCain, 73; and Lynda McCain, 78. Lentz also said Boyce was from Lakeland, Florida.

Ethan Cash, who lives near the store, told WREG-TV he heard a gunshot from inside his house.

“I had just woken up and I look back here, and I see dude walking back here with a shotgun,” he said.

Cash added that he went to the scene and found one person who had been shot. He checked for a pulse, but found none.

In the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office, Norma Washington told The Associated Press that Boyce was her nephew. She said he and the brother, Doug, who lives in Alaska, had been in town cleaning up a property they inherited from their deceased uncle.

“I lost my brother, and now this one,” Washington said. “This has been something else.”

It was unclear whether Crum knew either of the brothers.

The killings stunned residents of Arkabutla, home to 285 people and located about 30 miles (50 kilometers) south of Memphis, Tennessee. It’s the hometown of famed actor James Earl Jones, and nearby Arkabutla Lake is a popular fishing and recreational destination.

An elementary school and a high school in nearby Coldwater both went on lockdown while the suspect was being sought, according to the Coldwater Elementary School Facebook page. A short time later, a second post on the page said the lockdown had been lifted and “all students and staff are safe.”

April Wade, who lives in Arkabutla and grew up in Coldwater, said both are small communities where most people know each other, “but if you don’t, you know somebody who knows somebody.”

Speaking from a local tire store in the afternoon, Wade said she and her husband were aware of the shootings but had not yet heard the names of the suspect or victims.

“I think it’s crazy,” Wade said. “You do not expect something like that to happen so close to home.”

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said its agents were providing assistance to the sheriff’s department and state investigators. Lance said one of their top priorities was to determine a motive.

The sheriff, who has lived in the area his entire life and served in law enforcement for 25 years, said he could recall no prior problems with Crum.

The U.S. has seen a deadly start to 2023, including six mass killings in a three-week period in January, according to an Associated Press/USA Today database. It defines a mass killing as four or more people dead, not including the perpetrator.

There have also been a number of mass shootings in which fewer people were slain, such as Monday’s shooting at Michigan State University in which three people were killed and five were wounded.

In a statement, President Joe Biden said he and first lady Jill Biden were mourning the six victims and praying for the survivors. He urged Congress to act now on gun law reforms to address what he called “an epidemic” of gun violence.

Military Finishes Recovering Chinese Balloon Debris

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. has finished efforts to recover the remnants of the large balloon that was shot down off the coast of South Carolina, and analysis of the debris so far reinforces conclusions that it was a Chinese spy balloon, U.S. officials said Friday.

Officials said the U.S. believes that Navy, Coast Guard and FBI personnel collected all of the balloon debris off the ocean floor, which included key equipment from the payload that could reveal what information it was able to monitor and collect.

U.S. Northern Command said in a statement that the recovery operations ended Thursday and the final pieces are on their way to the FBI lab in Virginia for analysis. It said air and maritime restrictions off South Carolina have been lifted.

The announcement capped three dramatic weeks that saw U.S. fighter jets shoot down four airborne objects — the large Chinese balloon on Feb. 4 and three much smaller objects about a week later over Canada, Alaska and Lake Huron. They are the first known peacetime shootdowns of unauthorized objects in U.S. airspace.

The officials also said the search for the small airborne object that was shot down over Lake Huron has stopped, and nothing has been recovered. U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations.

The U.S. and Canada have also failed to recover any debris so far from the other two objects which were shot down over the Yukon and northern Alaska.

While the military is confident the balloon shot down off South Carolina was a surveillance airship operated by China, the Biden administration has admitted that the three smaller objects were likely civilian-owned balloons that were targeted during the heightened response, after U.S. homeland defense radars were recalibrated to detect slower moving airborne items.

Due to their small size and the remote areas where they were shot down, officials acknowledge that recovering any debris is difficult and probably unlikely. Those last two searches, however, have not been formally called off.

Much of the Chinese balloon fell into about 50 feet (15 meters) of water, and the Navy was able to collect remnants floating on the surface, and divers and unmanned naval vessels pulled up the rest from the bottom of the ocean. Northern Command said Friday that all of the Navy and Coast Guard ships have left the area.

Lao Kip Boosts Travel; High-Speed Train Brings More Tourists to Thailand

The number of Chinese tourists visiting Vientiane in Laos, Nong Khai, and Udon Thani in Thailand has increased now.

Suganda Punsue, chairman of the Nong Khai Travel Trade Promotion Association, and executives from the Nong Khai-based travel company Kantana Tour explained that the Lao kip is currently devalued, trading at 1 baht for 500 kip. Previously, it was 1 baht for 250 kip, boosting the travel industry.

Tourists have to exchange into local currency to pay for accommodation and food while travelling in Vientiane or Luang Prabang. Tour operators usually advise tourists to swap travel expenses for local currency at the checkpoint in Laos. They can exchange the money back into Thai baht at a slightly higher rate.

nongkai3

Suganda said that after the situation under COVID-19 improved and Laos reopened its land on May 9, 2022, the travel business has become busier, thanks to tourists who have not traveled for so long, the ongoing mid-year holiday season, and the arrival of the Lao-Chinese bullet train, which is boosting demand from medium-sized tour groups of about 40 to 100 people.

These tourists travel along the Nong Khai—Vientaine—Laung Prabang route. Thai tourists are eager to take the high-speed train and visit the historic city of Luang Prabang.

nongkai2

Access to China from the bullet train is still not clear. Since China has opened its country, the train can only reach Boten station, which is on the border between Laos and China.

Moreover, there is no tourist attraction in Boten to deter travelers. This prompts tourists to change their journey from a long-distance trip to a shorter trip or a day trip from Nong Khai to Vientiane. The price starts at 19,900 baht, excluding the ticket fee and accommodation fee.

nongkai5

However, the number of Chinese tourists visiting Vientiane, Nong Khai, and Udon Thani has increased because the train is relatively cheap compared to the flight from China to Vientiane, which costs about 20,000 baht per person.

The number of Korean tourists has also increased as they flee the winter season in the country to spend a short stay in Nong Khai and play golf in Vientiane, giving the travel industry a bit of a boost.

CHENGDU, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) — China’s pioneer in ecological and biological research of giant pandas, Professor Hu Jinchu, also known affectionately as the “panda papa,” died of illness at 94 on Thursday night.

The revered zoologist passed away at a hospital in Nanchong City, southwest China’s Sichuan Province, according to China West Normal University.

Hu is internationally recognized as the founder of the ecological and biological research of giant pandas and is hailed as the “first man to study giant pandas in China.”

He was appointed by the forestry department of Sichuan as the lead expert of a survey team for precious animal resources in 1974.

Based on the field research and findings by Hu and his research team, Wolong National Nature Reserve was expanded from 20,000 hectares to 200,000 hectares. Several national nature reserves attained approval due to his efforts.

According to Hu, each giant panda has different chewing habits, which means the length, thickness and chewing degree of bamboo residue vary accordingly. Therefore, researchers could obtain information on the number, age and activity range of giant pandas by comparing bamboo residue.

The method, which was named after Hu later, proved to be very helpful in studying the living situations of the wild giant panda.

In 1978, Hu Jinchu led the establishment of the world’s first field ecological observation station for giant pandas in Wolong National Nature Reserve.

In 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature downgraded the giant panda from “endangered” to “vulnerable” on the global list of species at risk of extinction thanks to China’s decades of efforts.

Currently, fewer than 2,000 pandas live in the wild, mostly in Sichuan and Shaanxi.

“Research on giant pandas is one mission that the era gifts. We should work hard on it,” Hu said.

In September 2019, Hu, along with three others, received lifetime achievement awards for their unrelenting efforts and outstanding achievements in the scientific research and conservation of giant pandas.

The award was launched by the Sichuan Provincial Bureau of Forestry and Grassland, the World Wide Fund for Nature as well as other institutions, as China marks the 150th anniversary of the scientific discovery of giant pandas.

“We believe that protecting pandas is protecting ourselves,” said Hu, who has spent 45 years on the research and conservation of giant pandas in China.
