Waving to the crowd for support, it was MC Youngohm’s turn to take apart his opponent on the stage. Circling across from him, MC Ken Noi of Chiang Rai listened anxiously and prepared to fire back at the end of the 45-second round. It all made for a very rude six minutes as the two took turns freestyling rap full of braggadocio, disses and punchlines.

BANGKOK — The city’s nightlife funzone next month will bring the hype of Goa-psychedelic trance culture to town.

When it comes to underground electronic tunes in Bangkok, it was always the smaller, independent clubs brave enough to say “fuck you” to commercial music and do something different. In the mid-’90s, Deeper in Soi Silom 4 sparked the flame for the city’s rave scene, in the early 2000s cafe Democ gave local crews a venue to perform, and in 2014 Dark Bar became the place that gave Bangkok’s next-gen DJs and promoters a place to be heard.

In 2009, London-based producer Stray earned props in the Drum ‘n’ Bass, or DnB, scene with his debut work “Timbre.” Released as a B-side, the track’s abstract atmospherics, off-kilter beats and climactic amen breakbeats had the scene waxing lyrical over the producer's studio wizardry.

BANGKOK — An outpost of Bangkok’s once-vigorous late-night scene will soon go dark – or at least, darker than usual.

For the past three decades the UK’s port city of Bristol has become known for innovative talent, with the likes of Portishead, Tricky, Roni Size and Massive Attack credited as part of the “Bristol sound.”

Besides the heat, April’s brought us quite a few interesting events. So far this month, we’ve set sail on Sunju Hargun’s Karma Kruise, bass music pioneer Addison Groove rocked Beam on Songkran, and Highland’s third 420 Festival was a complete success.
