KRABI — Ao Nang police have yet to determine the cause of the fall that killed Mr. Tim, an 18-year-old Dutch tourist, from the Khao Ngon Nak cliffs. In the meantime, the Dutch consulate has visited the parents of the deceased tourist and offered them support.
On August 2, Ao Nang Police Station revealed the tragic incident in which 18-year-old Tim, who had traveled to Thailand with his parents, fell to his death at Noppharat Thara Beach-Phi Phi Islands National Park, Moo 3, Nong Thale Subdistrict, Mueang District, Krabi Province.
The incident occurred on July 31 at around 5:00 p.m. Ao Nang police received a report from Phi Phi Islands National Park officials that Tim had been separated from his parents while they were visiting Khao Ngon Nak inside the park. The son had been feeling weak while hiking up the mountain, so his parents had let him sit and rest. They went down to get water and food for him, and when they returned they could not find him.
Authorities searched until 1:00 a.m. on August 1 and then temporarily suspended the search until daylight. The search resumed at 8:00 a.m. and at 2:00 p.m. officials found his body in a crevice 70 meters below the Khao Ngon Nak viewpoint. Tim’s parents wept with grief upon hearing this news.
Due to the steep cliffs at the crash site, it took a very long time before the body could be recovered. The body was finally transported to the Khao Ngon Nak Park office at 9:00 p.m. and then taken to Krabi Hospital for an autopsy by the investigating officers.
During the recovery, Seven Smulders, the Dutch Honorary Consul for Phuket, Phang Nga, Krabi and Suratthani, and Pol. Col. Jesada Saengsuri, Superintendent of Ao Nang Police Station, met with Tim’s parents and inquired about the incident.
Pol. Col. Jesada explained that authorities are still investigating the cause of Tim’s fatal fall. Initially, it was said that the spot where the tourist fell was a restricted area within the Noppharat Thara Beach-Phi Phi Islands National Park due to its dangerous nature.
