Israel Deports Greta Thunberg after Gaza-Bound Ship She Was on Was Seized

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel deported activist Greta Thunberg on Tuesday, the country’s Foreign Ministry said, a day after the Gaza-bound ship she was on was seized by the Israeli military.

Thunberg left on a flight to France and was then headed to her home country of Sweden, the Foreign Ministry said in a post on X. It posted a photo of Thunberg, a climate activist who shuns air travel, seated on a plane.

Speaking upon arrival at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport, Thunberg called for the release of the other activists who were detained aboard the Freedom Flotilla. She described a “quite chaotic and uncertain” situation during the detention.

She said the conditions they faced “are absolutely nothing compared to what people are going through in Palestine and especially Gaza right now.”

Thunberg calls on supporters to mobilize

“We were well aware of the risks of this mission,” Thunberg said from the Paris airport. “The aim was to get to Gaza and to be able to distribute the aid.” She said the activists would continue trying to get aid to Gaza.

Thunberg said it appears she is headed back to Sweden, hasn’t had access to a phone in a few days, and wants a shower. The activists were held separately and some had trouble accessing lawyers, she added. Asked why she agreed to deportation, she said, “Why would I want to stay in an Israeli prison more than necessary?”

Thunberg called on supporters to ask their governments to mobilize “to demand not only humanitarian aid being let into Gaza but most importantly an end to the occupation and an end to the systemic oppression and violence that Palestinians are facing on an everyday basis.”

She said recognizing Palestine is “the very, very, very minimum” that governments can do to help.

She was escorted by police out of the terminal, carrying no bags, as a few supporters applauded.

Thunberg was one of 12 passengers on the Madleen, a ship carrying aid to Gaza that was meant to protest Israel’s ongoing war there and shed light on the humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the group behind the journey.

Israeli naval forces seized the boat without incident early Monday about 200 kilometers (125 miles) off of Gaza’s coast, according to the coalition, which along with rights groups, said Israel’s actions were a violation of international law. Israel rejects that charge because it says such ships intend to breach what it argues is a lawful naval blockade of Gaza.

The boat, accompanied by Israel’s navy, arrived in the Israeli port of Ashdod Monday evening.

Other activists face deportation

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition said three activists, including Thunberg, had been deported along with a journalist. It said it had encouraged some of the group to do this so they could speak freely about their experiences.

Eight other passengers refused deportation and were being held in detention before their case is to be heard by Israeli authorities. Adalah, a legal rights group in Israel representing the activists, said the eight were expected to be brought before a court later Tuesday.

“Their detention is unlawful, politically motivated and a direct violation of international law,” the coalition said in a statement. It called for the remaining passengers to be released without deportation and said their lawyers would demand that they be allowed to complete their journey to Gaza.

Sabine Haddad, a spokeswoman for Israel’s Interior Ministry, said the activists who were being deported Tuesday had waived their right to appear before a judge. Those who did not will face one and will be held for 96 hours before being deported, she said.

Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament who is of Palestinian descent, was also among the passengers on board the Madleen. She has previously been barred from entering Israel because of her opposition to Israeli policies toward the Palestinians. It was not clear whether she was being immediately deported or detained.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said Tuesday that one of the detained French activists signed an expulsion order and will leave Israel on Tuesday for France. The other five refused. He said all the activists received consular visits.

Sergio Toribio, a Spanish activist who was deported, slammed Israel’s actions after he arrived in Barcelona.

“It is unforgivable, it is a violation of our rights. It is a pirate attack in international waters,” he told reporters.

Questions over a breach of international law

On Monday, Adalah, the rights group, said that Israel had “no legal authority” to take over the ship, because the group said it was in international waters and it was headed not to Israel but to the “territorial waters of the state of Palestine.”

“The arrest of the unarmed activists, who operated in a civilian manner to provide humanitarian aid, amounts to a serious breach of international law,” Adalah said in a statement.

Amnesty International said Israel was flouting international law with the naval raid and called on Israel to release the activists immediately and unconditionally.

Israel said its actions were consistent with international law.

Israel viewed the ship as a publicity stunt, calling it the “selfie yacht” with a “meager” amount of aid that amounted to less than a truckload.

“This was nothing but a ridiculous gimmick. A publicity stunt and nothing more,” said Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. “In any case — it is our intention to deliver to Gaza the tiny amount of aid on the yacht that they did not consume.”

A longstanding blockade of Gaza

Israel and Egypt have imposed varying degrees of a blockade on Gaza since Hamas seized power from rival Palestinian forces in 2007. Israel says the blockade is needed to prevent Hamas from importing arms, while critics say it amounts to collective punishment of Gaza’s Palestinian population.

During the 20-month-long war in Gaza, Israel has restricted and sometimes blocked all aid into the territory, including food, fuel and medicine. Experts say that policy has pushed Gaza toward famine. Israel says Hamas siphons off the aid to bolster its rule.

Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the Oct. 7 attack that ignited the war and took 251 hostages, most of whom have since been released in ceasefire agreements or other deals. Hamas is still holding 55 hostages, more than half of them believed to be dead.

Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which doesn’t distinguish between civilians and combatants but has said that women and children make up most of the dead.

The war has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and displaced around 90% of the territory’s population, leaving people there almost completely dependent on international aid.

Indian Tourist Loses $1,269 to Transgender Women in Pattaya Hotel Scam

Indian tourist who reported being deceived and robbed by transgender women leads reporters to the scene of the incident on Pattaya Beach Road on June 10, 2025.

PATTAYA — An Indian tourist filed a police report in the early morning hours of June 10 at 4:00 a.m., claiming he was robbed by two transgender women who worked together to steal money from his hotel room.

Mr. Sachin told police he encountered two transgender women near Pattaya Beach late at night, who then accompanied him to his hotel room in a Pattaya side street. One of the women invited him to shower together while the other waited on the bed outside the bathroom, which he believes was part of a premeditated plan.

When he emerged from the bathroom, Mr. Sachin noticed his wallet was not in its original position. Upon inspection, he discovered that a significant amount of money was missing: 600 euros (approximately 22,300 Thai baht or $685 USD) and 50,000 Indian rupees (approximately 19,000 Thai baht or $584 USD).

When he confronted the transgender woman who had been waiting on the bed, she deflected his questions before opening the door and fleeing. He attempted to chase after her, but the other woman tried to hold him back and distract him by suggesting he might have misplaced the money elsewhere.

Taking advantage of his momentary confusion, she also escaped and joined her accomplice in a waiting vehicle. Both suspects quickly fled the scene.

The heartbroken tourist, visiting Pattaya for the first time, filed his complaint with local authorities. Police are currently investigating and pursuing both suspects in the case.

Siriraj Targets Global Patients with Bangkok’s Medical Hub Plans

Siriraj
Architectural rendering of the Siriraj International Medical Institute (Bangpho)

BANGKOK  — Siriraj Hospital is forging ahead with its major 17-billion-baht ($520 million) “Bangpho Medical Hub” project in Bangkok, which is currently awaiting Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) approval. Construction is expected to be completed within five years, with the aim of attracting international patients.

The fees will be similar to those of Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital. All profits will be ploughed back into the running of the original Siriraj Hospital.

Professor Dr.Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital at Mahidol University, told Prachachat Business that the Siriraj International Medical Institute (Bangpho), which is currently at the EIA approval stage, is progressing.

Once the approval is received, the contractors will be appointed. It is expected that the design work will be completed by 2025 and the entire project will be finalised by 2031.

The new facility will be a large hospital on land donated by two unnamed donors on the Chao Phraya River. Given Siriraj’s medical expertise, the land will be used to build a new hospital to maximise the benefit to the public.

Foreign Patient Influx Is the Key

Prof. Dr. Apichat pointed out that Thailand can only become a real medical centre if it is able to accept foreign patients. Currently, many migrant workers are being treated under various welfare programmes. In addition, there is a growing demand from foreigners, especially from the US, Europe and all over Asia, travelling to Thailand specifically for medical care that cannot currently be provided by any other public hospital in Thailand.

Aphichat
Professor Dr.Apichat Asavamongkolkul, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital

In the initial phase, the institution expects about 10–20% of patients to be foreigners, but Prof. Dr. Apichat emphasised that the institute’s main mission is to serve Thai citizens.

“In the future, international patients will understand that this is a state-run hospital, even if it operates on a private model. They will know that the profits go back into helping many other patients. Siriraj has always served patients from all backgrounds and is currently the largest referral hospital for those using Thailand’s 30-baht health care system,” said Prof. Dr. Apichat.

The institute will not only provide healthcare services, but will also serve as a centre for medical education, research and training of future medical professionals.
Fees will be the same as Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital and every baht of profit will be reinvested in the original Siriraj Hospital.

Siriraj Hospital currently treats around 15,000 patients per day, while Piyamaharajkarun Hospital treats around 2,500 patients. Together with the Golden Jubilee Medical Centre, the Siriraj Centre for Geriatric Medicine in Samut Sakhon and Siriraj H Solutions in the ICS Lifestyle Complex (opposite ICONSIAM), the entire Siriraj system treats around 22,000 patients a day, making it the busiest healthcare network in Thailand.

siriraj bangpho2
A project sign for Siriraj International Medical Institute is displayed on construction barriers along Pracharat Road Sai 1 in Bang Sue district, Bangkok.

Projected Timeline and Profitability

Prof. Dr. Apichat explained that the Cabinet has approved a 16.96 billion baht ($518 million) budget for the project. The funding will be split between 11.05 billion baht ($338.6 million) from the state budget – allocated over 2026-2031 – and 5.91 billion baht ($181 million) from Siriraj’s own resources, representing a 65-35 percent split respectively.

The project will require around 3,397 medical staff, who will be gradually recruited through networks with other hospitals across Thailand.

The Siriraj International Medical Institute (Bangpho) will be a large healthcare facility on the Chao Phraya River, accessible by boat and train and located close to the Thai Parliament. The hospital’s high standards are expected to attract both local and international patients and boost the surrounding economy.

The facility will accommodate at least 650,000 outpatient visits and 20,000 inpatient stays per year. It will be a 19-storey building with a total floor space of 150,000 square metres. It will house 442 regular beds, 352 private beds, 90 beds in the intensive care unit, 22 operating theatres and a three-storey underground car park for 800 vehicles.

Although it may take some time for the project to generate strong financial returns, it is expected to be profitable within four to five years of opening if performance follows the current plan.

In comparison, Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital only started to generate profits in its fifth or sixth year of operation and is now in its 14th year of operation. It represents a big leap forward as a large number of patients are being treated there.

Biometric System Catches Mongolian Serial Thief in Bangkok

Distinctive tattoos are part of the evidence police use alongside biometric data verification and facial recognition matches to identify the Mongolian suspect who stole items from various locations in Bangkok, captured on June 9, 2025.

BANGKOK — Thai immigration authorities have successfully apprehended a Mongolian national suspected of orchestrating a theft spree across Bangkok, utilizing cutting-edge facial recognition technology integrated with the national biometric system.

Police Lieutenant General Panumas Boonyaluck, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, announced the arrest alongside Deputy Commissioners Police Major General Prachaya Prasansuk and Police Major General Pannana Nuchanart. The operation was part of intensified efforts to target foreign nationals involved in criminal activities, particularly transnational organized crime.

Targeting High-Value Electronics

The investigation began when Police Major General Prasart Kemaprasit, Commander of Immigration Division 1, and Police Colonel Rapeepat Utsaha, Deputy Commander, received reports of a Mongolian theft gang operating in the capital. The suspects were systematically targeting electronics including mobile phones and laptops at shopping malls, medical clinics, hotels, and other commercial establishments.

The breakthrough came following a theft on May 22, 2025, when the suspect stole a laptop from a prominent department store near the Ratchaprasong intersection while staff members were distracted.

Technology Cracks the Case

Police Colonel Polasit Sutti-art, Superintendent of Investigation of Immigration Division 1, and Police Lieutenant Colonel Suriya Puangsombat, Deputy Superintendent, deployed Thailand’s sophisticated biometric facial recognition system combined with enhanced video analysis software to identify the perpetrator.

Cross-verification with the victim confirmed the suspect as a Mongolian man using the alias “Mr. Batuyakar,” who had entered Thailand through Chanthaburi Immigration Checkpoint on an expired visa. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued for nighttime theft charges.

Final Capture During Latest Crime

The suspect was finally apprehended on June 9, 2025, after attempting another theft at a beauty clinic in the Rama 9 area. Posing as a customer, he stole a staff member’s mobile phone before fleeing the scene.

Immigration officers, working in coordination with Huai Khwang Police Station, arrested Batuyakar while he was attempting to sell the stolen merchandise. Despite initial denials, he confessed when confronted with conclusive evidence including facial recognition matches, distinctive tattoos, and biometric data verification.

The suspect admitted to entering Thailand specifically to commit theft and resell stolen goods. Authorities suspect he may be connected to a larger Mongolian theft network responsible for numerous pickpocketing and snatch theft incidents throughout Bangkok.

Ongoing Investigation

The Immigration Bureau continues its proactive investigation into the criminal organization, leveraging internal intelligence networks and biometric systems to identify additional suspects and dismantle transnational crime syndicates operating within Thailand.

The successful arrest demonstrates Thailand’s commitment to utilizing advanced technology in combating international criminal activities while protecting both residents and visitors in the kingdom.

Russian Tourist Assault Leads to Drug Arrests in Pattaya

A 54-year-old Russian national with a bandaged head wound arrives to file a complaint at Pattaya Police Station's Khong Dong Tan Branch on June 9, 2025, after being knocked unconscious and robbed late on June 8.

PATTAYA — Police in Pattaya have arrested two Thai men in connection with the assault and robbery of a 54-year-old Russian tourist who was knocked unconscious and robbed in an overgrown vacant lot.

The victim, identified only as Mr. Gurov, filed a complaint with the Khong Dong Tan Branch of Pattaya Police Station after the incident occurred late on June 8. He was attacked at a vacant lot in Soi Parkland, Wat Boonkanchanaram 7, in Pattaya City’s Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province.

After regaining consciousness, Gurov sought assistance from friends and his wife before filing the police report shortly before 1 a.m. on June 9.

Pattaya Tourist Police and local officers immediately launched an investigation, reviewing CCTV footage that led them to identify suspects. At 11 p.m. on June 9, authorities arrested two men: 40-year-old Paisal and 38-year-old Kitti at an abandoned building at the entrance of Soi Chaiyapruek 2 in Pattaya.

During the arrest, police discovered the suspects were carrying illegal drugs, including 44 methamphetamine pills and two bags of crystal methamphetamine (ice). Both men were taken into custody along with the narcotics evidence for questioning at Pattaya Police Station.

Under interrogation, Paisal confessed to the assault. He claimed he had gone into nearby bushes to urinate, leaving his two-year-old daughter in his motorcycle taxi. Upon returning, he alleged he saw the foreign man inappropriately touching the child. Paisal said he shouted at the foreigner and then struck him on the head with a piece of wood before stealing a ring and a bag, though the bag contained no valuables. He fled the scene immediately after the attack.

Further investigation revealed that Paisal has an extensive criminal record with six previous arrests — four drug-related cases and two theft cases. He now faces charges for assault, drug possession, and theft. His accomplice Kitti has been charged with drug possession.

Trump Authorizes Additional 2,000 National Guard Members to Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Another 2,000 National Guard troops along with 700 Marines are headed to Los Angeles on orders Monday from President Donald Trump, escalating a military presence local officials and Gov. Gavin Newsom don’t want and the police chief says creates logistical challenges for safely handling protests.

An initial 2,000 Guard troops ordered by Trump started arriving Sunday, which saw the most violence during three days of protests driven by anger over Trump’s stepped-up enforcement of immigration laws that critics say are breaking apart migrant families.

Monday’s demonstrations were was far less raucous, with thousands peacefully attending a rally at City Hall and hundreds protesting outside a federal complex that includes a detention center where some immigrants are being held following workplace raids across the city.

Trump has described Los Angeles in dire terms that Mayor Karen Bass and Newsom say are nowhere close to the truth. They say he is putting public safety at risk by adding military personnel even though police say they don’t need the help.

Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell said in a statement he was confident in the police department’s ability to handle large-scale demonstrations and that the Marines’ arrival without coordinating with the police department presented a “significant logistical and operational challenge” for them.

Newsom called the deployments reckless and “disrespectful to our troops” in a post on the social platform X.

“This isn’t about public safety,” Newsom said. “It’s about stroking a dangerous President’s ego.”

The protests began Friday in downtown Los Angeles after federal immigration authorities arrested more than 40 people across the city. The smell of smoke hung in the air downtown Monday, one day after crowds blocked a major freeway and set self-driving cars on fire as police responded with tear gas, rubber bullets and flash-bang grenades.

U.S. officials said the Marine troops were deployed to protect federal property and personnel, including federal immigration agents. Trump’s Monday order put the National Guard members on active duty.

One U.S. official warned that the order was just signed and it could take a day or two to get troops moving. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss troop movements.

Despite their presence, there has been limited engagement so far between the Guard and protesters while local law enforcement implements crowd control.

California pushes back against presence of federal troops

California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit over the use of National Guard troops following the first deployment, telling reporters in his announcement Monday that Trump had “trampled” the state’s sovereignty.

“We don’t take lightly to the president abusing his authority and unlawfully mobilizing California National Guard troops,” Bonta said. He sought a court order declaring Trump’s use of the Guard unlawful and asking for a restraining order to halt the deployment.

Trump said Monday that the city would have been “completely obliterated” if he had not deployed the Guard.

Bass criticized the deployment of National Guard troops and Marines as a “deliberate attempt” by the Trump administration to “create disorder and chaos in our city.”

She made a plea to the federal government: “Stop the raids.”

Early protests remained peaceful

On Monday, thousands flooded the streets around City Hall for a union rally ahead of a hearing for arrested labor leader David Huerta, who was freed a few hours later on a $50,000 bond. Huerta’s arrest on Friday while protesting immigration raids has become a rallying cry for people angry over the administration’s crackdown. He is the president of the Service Employees International Union California, which represents thousands of the state’s janitors, security officers and other workers.

Early protests had a calm and even joyful atmosphere at times, with people dancing to live music and buoyed by Huerta’s release.

Protesters linked hands outside the downtown federal detention center where Huerta was being held in front of a line of police officers. Religious leaders joined the protesters, working with organizers at times to de-escalate moments of tension.

There was a heavy law enforcement presence in the few square blocks including the federal detention facility, while most in the immense city of some 4 million people went about their normal business on peaceful streets.

Chanting against a line of National Guard troops with Homeland Security officers behind them surrounding the federal buildings ramped up in the afternoon as people yelled, “Free them all!” and “National Guard go away.”

As the crowd thinned in the evening, police began pushing protesters away from the area, firing crowd-control munitions as people chanted, “Peaceful protest.”

Other protests took shape Monday afternoon across LA County. Outside a Los Angeles clothing warehouse, relatives of detained workers demanded at a news conference that their loved ones be released.

The family of Jacob Vasquez, 35, who was detained Friday at the warehouse, where he worked, said they had yet to receive any information about him.

“Jacob is a family man and the sole breadwinner of his household,” Vasquez’s brother, Gabriel, told the crowd. He asked that his last name not be used, fearing being targeted by authorities.

Several dozen people were arrested in protests throughout the weekend. Authorities say one was detained Sunday for throwing a Molotov cocktail at police and another for ramming a motorcycle into a line of officers.

McDonnell said police officers were “overwhelmed” by the remaining protesters, who included regular agitators who show up at demonstrations to cause trouble. He said the protests followed a similar pattern for episodes of civil unrest, with things usually ramping up in the second and third days.

Guard deployment is a nearly unprecedented escalation

The deployment appeared to be the first time in decades that a state’s National Guard was activated without a request from its governor, a significant escalation against those who have sought to hinder the administration’s mass deportation efforts.

The last time the National Guard was activated without a governor’s permission was in 1965, when President Lyndon B. Johnson sent troops to protect a civil rights march in Alabama, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

In a directive Saturday, Trump invoked a legal provision allowing him to deploy federal service members when there is “a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States.”

Tough Talk Drags On in Cambodia-Thailand Border Standoff

Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — Cambodia’s defense ministry on Monday said that the country’s troops haven’t withdrawn from a patch of land whose ownership is hotly disputed by neighboring Thailand, but the declaration also echoed recent statements by both sides seeking a peaceful resolution to their competing border claims.

Cambodian and Thai authorities engaged in saber-rattling last week, after an armed confrontation at the border on May 28 left one Cambodian soldier dead. The incident, which each side blamed on the other, reportedly took place in a relatively small “no man’s land” constituting territory along their border that both countries claim is theirs.

A declaration by the Cambodian defense ministry on Monday had “No Withdrawal of Troops” as its first principle. It said that “Cambodian forces have not been withdrawn from any areas under Cambodian sovereignty where they have been stationed for an extended period.” The wording left unclear exactly which positions had been occupied for “an extended period.”

His statement also reaffirmed Cambodia’s territorial claims covering not only the spot near Morakot village in Cambodia’s northwestern province of Preah Vihear where the soldier was killed, but also three other pieces of disputed land.

Cambodian Defense Minister Tea Seiha himself on Sunday had painted a slightly different picture, stating that Cambodia and Thai military leaders had met and decided to adjust the military forces of both sides to return to appropriate areas in order to reduce tension and confront each other on the border.

His statement appeared to be in accord with what Thai Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced on Sunday, that both sides had withdrawn their forces to where they had been in 2024. That came after Thailand began shutting or limiting crossing hours at some of the numerous checkpoints along the countries’ common border.

The tough talk on both sides appeared aimed mostly at drumming up nationalist support among their own domestic audiences. In Thailand, the elected government of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has been attacked by right-wing nationalists who are longtime foes of her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Already last year, Paetongtarn’s government was attacked on nationalist grounds for proposing to resume talks with Cambodia on demarcation of maritime territory believed to hold profitable hydrocarbon resources.

There is a long history to disputes over border territory, leaving Thailand especially bitter.

In 1962, the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, awarded to Cambodia the disputed territory on which stands the historic Preah Vihear temple. The ruling, which became a major irritant in bilateral relations, was reaffirmed in 2013. There had been serious though sporadic clashes there in 2011.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet last week vowed to take the cases of the four currently disputed areas to the court to determine ownership, even if Thailand didn’t join in the appeal, in order “to end this problem and extinguish it once and for all so that there is no further confusion.”

Thailand Matches Cambodia Visa to 7 Days, Targets Scammer Operations

Traffic at Ban Hat Lek, Khlong Yai district, Trat province, on June 9, 2025, the second day after Thailand implemented new border checkpoint opening-closing hours. More than 20 cargo trucks including container trucks, cement trucks, and fruit trucks queued for over 200 meters waiting to cross the border into Cambodia.

BANGKOK — Thailand has responded to Cambodia by reducing visa duration for Cambodians to seven days, with plans to escalate measures including cutting electricity and internet to gambling and scammer operations. Thailand confirms readiness for June 14th JBC meeting as Foreign Ministry reports positive signals.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura responded to media questions during a June 9th press briefing regarding Cambodia’s immigration police reducing visa duration for Thais entering Cambodia from 60 days to seven days effective June 8. He confirmed Thailand has reciprocally reduced visa duration for Cambodians to stay in Thailand to  seven days, though it remains uncertain how long this measure will continue. Thailand awaits improved conditions and for both sides to resume discussions about entry duration.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura announces updates on the Thai-Cambodia border situation at the Foreign Ministry in Bangkok on June 9, 2025.

The measure comes despite reports on June 8th that Thai and Cambodian forces conducted joint surveys along the border ditches and collaborated on backfilling areas according to mutual agreements, with both sides repositioning troops to previously agreed locations during normal conditions in 2024.

Thailand views this as positive development and good signals reflecting Cambodia’s sincerity in reducing tensions along the Thai-Cambodia border. This results from negotiations at all levels by all parties leading toward peaceful long-term solutions with mutual respect and sincerity, particularly through existing bilateral mechanisms, creating favorable atmosphere for the upcoming Thailand-Cambodia Joint Border Committee (JBC) meeting on June 14.

Escalating Anti-Scammer Measures

However, border checkpoint control continues based on security assessments to maintain peace and order. The Center for Coordinating Prevention and Resolution of Threats Affecting Border Security with Neighboring Countries has announced plans to escalate measures preventing and suppressing technology crimes and human trafficking along the Thai-Cambodia border.

These include cutting electricity, suspending internet signals to gambling and scammer operations, and controlling goods and equipment that could be used for technology crimes and other transnational crimes. These measures will be presented to the National Security Council meeting.

Nikorndej confirmed Thailand’s readiness for the JBC meeting with sincere intentions, seeing cooperation and genuine commitment from both sides to improve bilateral relations. The Thai government affirms confidence that existing mechanisms between Thailand and Cambodia – including JBC, GBC, RBC, bilateral negotiations at all levels in both military and civilian sectors, and promoting good relations between peoples of both countries – will provide effective pathways for resolving conflicts.

“Thailand sincerely hopes that the upcoming meeting hosted by Cambodia on June 14th will help reduce tensions in the overall situation that remains fragile, to maintain peace and safety for people on both sides of the border,” he emphasized.
