Truck flipped upside down after taking sharp turn

(30 October) A pick-up truck was found upside down in a sewage canal after the driver
allegedly skidded at sharp turn, leaving his friend in coma after choking on waste
water.

The
incident was reported to have taken place in Lamlukka district, Pathum Thani province. The driver
explained that as they were reaching the curve, he was confused with the street signs and had to
take a sharp turn.

The
truck then flipped over and went down to the sewage with the two victims trapped inside the vehicle.
The driver was mildly injured whereas the passenger found unconscious after drowning in the waste
water. He was later treated with CPR before transported to the
hospital.

Police then charged the driver for reckless driving and causing harm to
others.

They
also warned people commuting on this route to be careful after many accidents had
occurred.

Thailand Risks Sugar Smuggling

(30 October) Thailand’s cheap sugar is facing threat from sugar smuggle as it holds the cheapest retail price in the South East Asian region.

With retail price at THB 22.60 per Kg, Thailand has the cheapest sugar in ASEAN.Private sectors suggest the government to prevent nation′s sugar shortage.

According to Mr. Siriwut Siempakdee, Chairman of Public Relation Committee of Thai Sugar Miller Co.Ltd., his company has the lowest sugar price at THB 22.60 per Kg, and THB 23.60 for refine sugar.

However, comparing to our neighbor, Laos and Cambodia sell their sugar at THB 30 – 35 per Kg, Myanmar THB 30.1, Vietnam THB 25.50 – 28.50, Malaysia THB 25.87, Indonesia THB 40.35 and the Philippines THB 41.20.

Mr. Siriwut stated his concern over the possibility of sugar shortage within the country as there are more consumption demand from China, Japan, South Korea and Australia. Moreover, the demand is also subjected to increase once the region enters AEC (ASEAN Economic Community).

According to Mr. Siriwut, unless the government changes certain policies, Thailand would face domestic sugar shortage as sugar might be smuggled out of the country to feed those higher demands.

Police Seize Viagra Coffee

(29 October) A collaborated team of Metropolitan Police Bureau and Representative from Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seizure coffee claimed to have contained Viagra.

The team had conducted a search at a company in Kannayao district, Bangkok on Tuesday morning after the search warrant was issued by Minburi Provincial Court.

Several reports were made against a coffee brand ‘One Fan’ (Thailand) for mixing the illegal Sildenafil substance in their coffee.

Prior to the search, police claimed they had taken the sample of the coffee to be tested by the Department of Medical Science. The results then yielded that the coffee contains Sildenafil substance, which is commonly known as Viagra under its trade name.

Mr. Paitoon Saengseenil, a co-founder of the company, said that his company is only responsible for retailing the coffee, and has not been engaged in the manufacturing process of the coffee.

According to Mr. Paitoon, the company was under the governing of Saha Mang Khang Group.The man also denied knowing any clues about the containing of the illegal substance in the coffee.

Police then seized 66,264 packages of the coffee found at the scene worth no less than THB 3 million.

The items taken during the seizure will be tested again. However, if the test bares the same result, the manufacturing company will be facing charges for adding illegal ingredients into their food. The company may face up to two year in prison and no more than THB 20,000 fine.

Four-year-old boy killed in a road accident in Ratchaburi

(29 October) Ban Pong Police to investigate a collision between a truck and a modified
motorcycle, which killed a four-year-old boy in Ratchaburi province.

Reportedly, witnesses claimed
the motorcycle tried to cross the road, while the truck was heading towards them in a speed. They
truck then crashed into the altered motorbike, causing both of them to fall in a puddle on the road
side.

Mr.
Nimit Intrhom, 28, the father of the boy, and his brother, an eight-year-old boy, were severely
injured from the incident, and were later transported to Ban Pong
hospital.

The
report did not mention what happened to the truck driver.

No Tax Reduction for Brand-Name Goods: Officials

(29 October) Deputy Minister of Finance and the director of Customs Department, Ms. Benja
Louicharoen, finally confirmed that the tax for luxury goods will not be cut.

According to the Deputy Finance Minister,
the latest report on luxurious goods import this year worth a total of THB 100 billion. The product
with highest total is perfume with THB 15 billion, increased by THB 4
billion.

Meanwhile, Bags comes in second with THB 11 billion, THB 3 billion higher. Next are watches
with THB 2 billion increase from THB 8 billion.

Clothing sector also earned THB 6 billion in total with THB 1 billion higher.
Eyeglasses doubled from THB 1 billion to THB 2 billion this year, and the rest is miscellaneous
merchandises.

The
deputy finance minister then admitted that there will be no tax cut on these luxurious import goods
as domestic entrepreneurs would be harmfully affected. Moreover, there is also no guarantee that the
prices will be reduced.

It
is now up to the Fiscal Policy Office to come up with another approach to support Thailand as a
shopping paradise, regarding the purpose of the government policy, said Ms. Benja.
